I have had 2 massages before this experience (basic massages at other spas) and this was my least favorite. I booked stone massages for my friend and I to celebrate our birthdays. I chose this place because they had availability and had great reviews online. The two main reasons I did not like the experience is because we received the wrong massages. Instead of stone massages we received standard massages. Our masseuse was very apologetic when she realized the error while checking us out. I appreciate her confirming that because I otherwise would have thought that's just what stone massages are like. The second reason is because it was hard to relax. There are two massage rooms and the waiting room. We unfortunately could hear everything in the next room because the other masseuse talked very loudly to her patients. All this being said, the massage itself worked. I had some crazy tension in my neck/shoulders area and Brogan worked them right out! She was a professional with the massage and owning the mix-up with massage types. I really loved working with her and would still come back if she had an opening. read more

Since moving to Maine earlier this year, I've been looking to find a place where I can get a true deep tissue massage experience. While living in Boston, I had a wide range of massage options, including a woman who convinced me to let her walk on my back. It was awkward and it didn't do much for me. I've had a couple of massages since I arrived in Maine. The latest was at Massage on Maine. The owner, Abi, explained the various types of massage he provides and I told him what I was looking for. He mentioned he uses his feet. When I told him about my experience of the woman walking on by back, he assured me he doesn't do that. I had a fantastic Christmas massage with Abi, including deep tissue and hot stones and stretching. Clean, warm facility. Wonderful 90 minutes that left me giddy because it was so good. We have recommended Abi to my in-laws, and would recommend him to friends. Abi is a wonderful therapist. I have come to him for both general relaxation, which is an amazing experience, and for acute treatment, which has saved my life. When I threw my lower back out, Abi was able to recommend and execute treatment that 100% directly relieved my discomfort and set me on an accelerated path to recovery. Deep tissue, hot stones, cupping, shiatsu were are all employed. While Abi's services are A+ (contrary to some other reviewers, it is very clear Abi has had extensive training), he has a personality to boot. You know that feeling of looking forward to your massage and lying down on the table, anticipating the relaxation you will feel? Well, I was so disappointed with my massage yesterday. I kept thinking, how much longer will this last? That is not the feeling you want to have on the massage table! I guess Nan is the better therapist. Her husband is very nice man, but I'm assuming he is not trained like Nan. It didn't feel like he had any training at all. It felt to me like either he was still in Massage school- which is fine- but then that must be stated to the customer right away up front. Or, he had just graduated from Massage school- which is fine, but then do not charge me $95.00. Again, he is a nice person but does not know how to do massage. I asked specifically for help with my rotator cuff issue. He rubbed and rubbed the shoulder but did not find the nuances, did not find the smaller spaces where rotator cuff issues present themselves. I have had tons of massage over a period of 30 years, and at this point, I do know that the Teres Major and Teres Minor muscles are involved and those are around the shoulder blade area. He did not demonstrate any knowledge of any muscle groups. He just rubbed up and down my back and up and down my legs. He did not have any specific massage skills that I could tell. It was just very disappointing. The music was pleasant Native American flute music. The sound of the running water was pleasant. The smell of lavender on the face cradle was pleasant. But I will not be returning. read more

Abi provides this experience, from the moment you walk into his door until the time you leave. We stopped in from out of town and he provided the most thoughtful and intuitive massage I ever received. He was communicative and adjusted pressure according to my needs. My sweetie and I were coming up for a weekend away and decided to book a couples massage between arriving by train in Brunswick and staying the night in Bath. The problem was: the train was running horrendously late. I let Nan know and she was so accommodating and understanding about either needing to cancel or rescheduled the appointment. We made it to the appointment a bit late, but she was able to still get us in for a shortened session, which was so lovely. Now, here's where it gets good: we both got to experience ashiatsu for the first time, and let me tell you: you should get in there for this. Ashiatsu is a deep tissue barefoot massage and I felt like I've been missing out on this my entire life. It felt so good on some places that more traditional modalities don't always or can't always get into deeply, like the hips, glutes, quads, and hamstrings. My partner and I, received a couples massage on Sunday from Abi and Ashley. I felt a little guilty hogging the abi magic all to myself, since my partner has been dealing with sore shoulders from walking our Boston terrier. You know the masseuse is giving it their all when you hear the occasional grunt or heavy breathing. Ashley did a great job as well. It brings me no joy to rate Massage on Maine poorly - after all, I make it a point, whenever possible, to support local small businesses. In fact, I was looking forward to a massage and have plenty of experience getting massages - well over 150 of them across them internationally. Whatever I got today was NOT a Swedish massage. I'm not sure what I'd call it, but it seemed amateurish and unpleasant. If you do contact Massage on Maine for services, beware of the male massage therapist - the "service" I received today was not even close to being worth the $95 I paid. I had indicated that I needed my shoulders to be focused on, yet he spent very little time on my shoulders. All he did was rub up and down my torso, arms and legs, with no focus on anything, really. I hate to say it, but I'd rather pay $95 to NOT have a massage at Massage on Maine before I'd pay to get one there again. read more

I just had my first Ashiatsu treatment with Nan, and I have already scheduled my next one! If you've ever received a massage and thought, well that felt amazing but it didn't quite get to the issue, well may I recommend Ashiatsu. The body work was very deep, but not so deep as to feel uncomfortable or too intense. The experience was of incredible release and was deeply relaxing and nourishing, while also hitting all of my source issues of discomfort, tension, and imbalance in my body. Nan is wonderful, not just because she is so kind and warm and incredibly skilled at what she does, but, she possesses the ability to listen to what is needed.
