    Cacio e Pepe

I did appreciate the complementary prosecco to open lunch. When in Rome... We didn't choose to eat at this hotel restaurant. Desperation did. The Hanger was real. But the proseco lightened things up a bit and when I spotted a dish I'd been anxious to devour, cacio e pepe, it was on like Donkey Kong. Our kid had her umpteenth pizza and the wife went with the ol' clams and linguini move. She'd later report some disappointment. We were impressed with the bathrooms downstairs and I really appreciated their attention to al dente detail. Big crackles of black pepper and smooth cheese snuggled into my loins and I was finally there. Rome. I didn't want to leave, even if I'd hoped for a better choice for lunch.

With the exception of encountering a harder than usual mattress, our five night stay at Massimo D' Azeglio was really good. A slightly older hotel for some reason (though not terribly old), the hotel staff made up for it be providing prompt & polite customer service, and coming to our assistance when the the time required it (directions, etc). First off, the location. The hotel is located within a block of Termini Station, which is a major convenience. While there are transportation options from Leonardo da Vinci airport in Fiumicino, I was surprised at how close the hotel actually was to Termini Station. Literally a two minute walk away. The descriptions that I was given by airport transportation staff was that you would have to walk 1-2 kilometers from Termini to reach the hotel. Hardly the case. Further, the hotel is located on a major roadway known as Via Cavour, meaning that you can walk to a great many sites heading westbound into the center of the city. We were able to walk to such sites such as The Colisseum, Trevi Fountain, and Circus Maximus without any problem whatsoever. Second, the staff. The first thing that you may notice is that the bellman/security guard seems to be always outside greeting guests. Its cool to see the staff dressed professionally (uniforms), as if its a throwback to the old days of hotel hospitality. Not only that, but they were just so genuinely nice, be it the bartender, front desk staff, morning breakfast staff, and evening restaurant staff. Third, the room. My expectations of the room were that it would be on the smaller side of things, and I wasn't really all that disappointed. It was small to my standard, but that's just Europe. We were on one of the top floors, just above one of the flag poles. I didn't have much of a view (other than other hotel buildings),yet it was decent. The only place to put clothes in was the within the drawers within the desk. No dresser bureau, yet I think that its because of the size of the room. As aforementioned earlier, the bed's mattress was super firm, yet the hotel did its best to accommodate us by placing a softer mattress pad on top. It made a slight difference, so we didn't switch out of rooms. Fourth, the breakfast/restaurant experience. Breakfast was included within the rate, and had a pretty good assortment of choices, to include gluten free servings on a back table. From healthy choices to the non-healthy ones (doughnuts, bacon), breakfast here is an absolute must at Massimo D' Azeglio. The restaurant also was better than expected. While it offers a dinner buffet that may be twenty Euros, the three and four course meal choices were fantastic & palatable, along with the customer service (thank you, Sebastiano). Altogether, I would certainly stay here once again.

The menu posted outside the door mentioned a buffet available for lunch or dinner. We entered at approximately 7:15 p.m. the buffet items consisted of fish fillets, seafood salad, and chicken prepared. I had more vegetables in one sitting than at other restaurants in Rome. The desserts were amazing and included in the fixed price of 19 euro. A great value and staff so friendly.

After a disappointing encounter atop the Mediterraneo hotel (somehow that reads like I was having lunch with Superman), I decided that my first dinner away from my Globus tour would be someplace better. Finding a good restaurant in walking distance from any hotel in Room can be a difficult task given the saturation of gelaterias, cafes, and pizzerias. I had no cell service so lacked immediate access to Trip Advisor, making it impossible to differentiate the seedy from the sublime. I wandered within walking distance of my hotel for over an hour but nothing stirred me. I didn't want pizza; I wanted a full course meal, and oddly enough, my ultimate choice was next door to where I started, the Ristorante Massimo d'Azeglio, another hotel's restaurant. Alas, for those on the Globus tour, you may never know that a great restaurant sits only a few feet from your room. And for those of you with an attention span shorter than a ferret on a double expresso, you can stop reading here and move on--the Ristorante Massimo d'Azeglio is really good. Somewhat anti-climactic really. For everyone else, you may have read or been told that many restaurants in Rome charge you for water, ambience, bread, seating, service, and apparently being in Rome, penny pinching at every opportunity. In defense, I did encounter this early in my journey. This evening, I decided I wasn't going to stress myself about such things and ignore the coming bill. I didn't concern myself when the bread basket was presented or a glass of wine poured without asking. They even replaced the bread basket after I cleared it out. I ordered the chef's suggestion menu, tagliatelle with lemon sauce, beef carpaccio, and each plate prepared by the table. An uncut lemon halved, seeds plucked out, and then spiked with a fork before drizzled over the beef--it was as much theater as food. Even the dessert was a visible menu, with the tray wheeled to my side allowing me to select from the available cakes. I'm not saying the meal was perfect--there appears to be an aversion to offer a bill, and this was not the only time this happened on my trip. With Massimo, I had to wait twenty minutes, and ended up asking two different people before it was finally delivered. Here was where the experience fell into the bizarre. The menu I had ordered from promised the Chef Suggestion for 35 Euros. The final price adding in water, bread, and wine, (pause for drumroll) 35 euros. That's right, not a single dime added for the service and compliments. I suddenly felt bad for being on the defensive the two previous days in Rome. Although Massimo had no way of knowing, I was overcome by an overwhelming desire to leave a significant tip. After two lackluster first meals in Rome, Massimo was a much needed jolt to my expectations. Some restaurants don't phone it in, surfing the reputation of the country. Some places earn their praise. This is an old hotel with very hard beds. Internet doesn't work in every room. Don't stay here if you can help it.

By the time we were seated, dozens of people were waiting behind us. We sipped an Aperol spritz and lemonade while we waited, chatting with fellow diners who raved about the restaurant. On a sweltering day, our kids were starting to struggle in the heat when the owner came outside and gave them mini pizzas breads. It was a thoughtful gesture that immediately made us feel welcome. Once seated, we ordered burrata, cacio e pepe, amatriciana pasta, pork chops, and fried artichokes. Everything was excellent, but the amatriciana was the standout--rich, savory, and unforgettable. The cacio e pepe was silky, the burrata fresh and creamy, the pork chops juicy, and the fried artichokes perfectly crisp. There's a reason people line up for Da Enzo. The food is exceptional, the atmosphere lively, and the hospitality remarkable. Without question, this was our best meal in Rome and one of our most memorable restaurant experiences.

The tomatoes were fresh and juicy but the burrata was a bit thick (referring to the outer aspect). Also the bread was a bit tough. The amatriciana was good, but not worth a 2 hour wait in a line, 7.5/10. Pasta was perfectly al dente, but the sauce wasn't anything to die for. I think you can get a very similar possibly better pasta in Rome without the wait. My girlfriend got the gnocchi pasta, which she said was a 7/10. The gnocchi was great, but again the sauce wasn't anything special Tiramisu, 10/10. This was amazing. It was sweet without being overpowering. The ladyfingers weren't soggy, and had that strong espresso taste. I would come back here just for this dessert. Also if you don't like cramped spaces, probably not the best spot. I could hear the people next to me better than I could hear the person across me haha.

We chose this restaurant because of its outstanding trip advisor rating (4.8 stars with over 4,000…read morereviews), so we were expecting an amazing meal. Unfortunately, it ended up being one of the most disappointing meals of our trip to Rome. I want to start by saying the staff was wonderful--everyone was incredibly kind, welcoming, and attentive. We have absolutely no complaints about the service. The food, however, was very underwhelming. The Margherita pizza was undercooked, with dough that was still soft and not fully baked. The chicken dish tasted more like a simple stew and lacked flavor, and the lasagna was just average. Another red flag was that all of our food arrived within about five minutes of ordering, which made it seem like everything had been pre-made rather than freshly prepared. We rarely leave negative reviews, especially when the staff is so friendly, but we chose this restaurant specifically because of its exceptional reviews. I think it's only fair to share our honest experience so other travelers have realistic expectations. While the service was excellent, the food simply didn't live up to the reputation.

Being new to Rome, and having walked 20k steps on our first day, there are an abundance of options a for dining. We wanted something classically Rome nearby to our hotel. The Yelp review of this restaurant was sufficiently positive to entice us. Being American, we appreciate the earlier-than-customary dining options. We arrived at 6pm without a reservation. We were seated immediately. The restaurant is intimate and very well staffed. The wood fire oven is front-and-center and the fresh mozzarella is prominent in display. We ordered a bottle of wine ... all options are very fairly priced. This is nice. We started with a Greek salad to share. It was unlike any American Greek salad ... and a really delight. It is early June but the tomatoes and peppers were ripe and crisp and really fresh. My wife ordered the Marguerite pizza; I opted for the Gorgonzola pizza (the effusive review on Yelp was compelling). Both were solid. We appreciate the thin crust and the crisp edged. The center of both, however, was doughy and somewhat undercooked. Looking around ... the restaurant was over 50% full even at this early hour. Most were Americans. We saw a good number of diners with pasta dishes ... and none were left unfinished. Sadly, we don't have any comparisons to weigh (yet). So, I cannot affirm any "best of" citations, it this is certainly a solid trattoria/pizzeria. The staff are attentive and the food served hot and fresh.

Many of their pizzas are quite elaborate With all sorts of exotic ingredients. I went super simple. Gorgonzola. Mozzarella. That's it. Just enough Mozzarella to cut the Gorgonzola and make for a good melt. * * * If you have never had a gorgonzola pizza, you have never lived. Just sayin'. * * * P.S. My lovely wife got a Norwegian salmon pizza. The Norwegian salmon was stacked up high on her pizza As if she was in the World Series of Poker and she was a big winner. I have never seen so much salmon on one plate. After our meal, I made a discreet phone call to the Norwegian embassy in Rome asking them if they still had any salmon left. The woman at the embassy assured me the Norwegian salmon supply was fine. That surprises me given all the salmon that was on my wife's pizza.
