This place is so cute. It is very vintage and brings you back to your childhood, whether it is in the 60's or 90's. They have items that range in that many eras. This place is also huuuuge. You wouldn't think so from the outside. But it's actually 2 stories! It's located in the popular Market Square area. It's seriously one of the old school stores that has always been around. I hope they continue with good business to be keep open!! Must visit! They even have a "limited edition" candy area where you have a basket and just pick and choose what kinds you want. I love visiting here whenever we are downtown. It reminds me of an old general store with a little bit of everything. My favorite area is the candy section because it is filled with a lot of candy you can't find now a days. They have a unique collection of clothes, housewares, outdoors, shoes, toys, and specialty foods. There is something for everyone and many items make wonderful gifts. If you are lucky they will be popping fresh popcorn while you are there. It is only 50 cents and it is a nice little treat while you are browsing the store. The staff is super friendly and helpful. My kids love this place and we come here everytime we go to Knoxville to visit Grandma. It has an old-fashioned, general store atmosphere with decent prices. Of course the main attraction for my kids is the Candy section! They love to pick out a big variety of new and old timey sweets! Sold by the pound, it is easy to get carried away! My wife and I like to wander around and see what is on sale or find a unique gift for someone. We have also found several good deals on shoes or outdoor clothing on the lower level. They occasionally have an outside organization in the store which I think it great. The last time we visited they featured a pet adoption organization and a lady that was making lye soap (like granny used to do). I wish they would add a store in Nashville! read more

Noteworthy knife collection downstairs. You can definitely get outfitted here for outdoor adventures, a little on the pricey side though. Great staff, very helpful. Stopped in to use the bathroom. Pleasantly surprised at how clean it was, but not so clean that you go home and clean your own bathroom. Plenty of toilet paper, which is a must have during the Coronavirus pandemic. No bad smells, no church bathroom perfume vibes either. 10/10 would poop there again. read more

This is one of the best stores I have ever visited, and I have shopped all over the world. They hit all my favorite brands: Patagonia, Adventura, Life Is Good. Great prices and sales as well. GREAT FOR BROWSING! Mast General Stores are always fun shops because they have great character and they are great for their awesome candy collection, clothing items, shoes and tons of other items that you don't really need. I love the nostalgic feel of these stores. However, when it comes to University of Tennessee items, you will find that these items are grossly overpriced. These same items can easily be purchased from the local Walmart, Loves or Pilot Travel Center for less than half of the posted price at Mast. I would prefer to purchase souvenirs that are unique to the store or the state and aren't being mass produced. Great for browsing and remembering! read more

I bought my mom her Christmas gift there last night. I was looking in the women's section and asked a women staff person where a particular size was. She said they don't carry them and didn't offer to help look for my size. She made it very obvious that I was bothering her and she made no move to come out from behind the cash register. I found the size by myself and then informed that particular staff member of my good luck, she then preceded to give me a death stare. I like to buy local but definitely expect great customer service to go along with the higher price items there. I don't think I'll go back because even though it was it crowded no one asked if they could help me or even greet me. I did enjoy the gift wrapping by H.a.l.t. Which is a nonprofit group that teams young at risk teens with training basic obedience to homeless puppies . I gave the Mast General 2 stars because they had my mom's gift but not the southern customer service that I have come to expect. They seemed like their britches have gotten a little big for them. read more

I didn't know they had a Mast General Store outside of Boone, NC until I ran smack dab into this one. It was exactly what I expected and more. Lots of cool knickknacks, things for the kitchen, clothing, jams, mixes, and of course, the Candy Barrel! We made sure to stick up on wax juice bottles, gummies, and licorice. This is also a good place to find Blenheim ginger ale and Nehi sodas. read more

Old Timey like the front half of a Cracker Barrel, with a wide selection of general store-y stuff. I was looking for some flannel, and came home with a pair of pajama pants and a flannel shirt, both of which had holes before they made it to the washing machine. Ah well. I would have liked to have worn the pants a third time before getting a hole (in the CALF, not even the knee), and the shirt got a weird hole on the back of the shoulder that should really not have been there. But they were cheap and they're still comfortable. I wouldn't shop here again for clothing though. read more

I walked around in this store for about 45 minutes to look for gifts for my family. The selection is amazing. I would've liked if the people asked if I needed help before I asked them for it. I love this place. I wish we had one in Dallas where I live. I went into this store thinking I may or may not find anything at all to buy, and boy was I wrong. I wanted a little bit of everything. I bought candy that I grew up eating as a kid, and then some. They had all kinds of preserves and jars full of home baked or homemade tasting goodies. They had some pretty clothing and trinkets for the home. We never even made it downstairs, we ran out of time. (Boo) My intent is to go back and do some more shopping. I bought my son a book about science and experiments. This general store is sort of similar to a Cracker Barrel gift shop, except much better with thousands more items. It's surrounded by a nice area that includes shops, restaurants, and tourist type stops. It has a old southern charm to it and I appreciate that more than anything! You'll definitely find something you HAVE to have. read more
