Master Falafel - Front counter - Middle Eastern Near Me - Rochester, New York

I've patronized them several times over the last few years, and until today the food has always been good. A couple of years ago, they stopped opening for Saturday lunch (which was the only time I ever went there..), so I stopped going there. Earlier this year I heard that they were once again open for lunch on Saturdays, and I've been there twice since then. As I mentioned, the food has always been good; pitas generally come with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles (middle-eastern), and tzatziki sauce, along with your protein of choice. I've had the chicken shawarma, the gyro, the kofta and the falafel; all were good. Today, I noticed that there is also an "eggplant pita" on the menu. Eggplants are a fairly common element in middle-eastern cooking, often sliced and grilled or roasted, sometimes battered, but often not. Sounded like a good idea? No, it was not.. What I got, instead of eggplant slices was just COLD baba ghanoush! Put on top of lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and a ladleful of rather runny tzatziki sauce, and what you ended up with was one COLD, SOGGY and WET mess inside a pita. It was dreadful, PLUS it made an unholy mess dripping all over everything! How can they call this an "eggplant pita" when it's just a cold baba ghanoush salad with runny dressing stuffed into a pita which can't handle that amount of liquid? BEWARE OF ORDERING THIS PITA!!!!!! read more

EDIT..... I've been here twice.. Some updates. GET THAT HOUSE MADE BAKLAVA It's just right and not too sweet. I've really never been a fan because it was just WAYYYY to sweet. This is scrumptious and made at the restaurant no joke. Menu Board: They now gave a menu board above the check out/cashier which is great! That Shisk Tawook is worth getting again! It seems that this place just popped up over here on Monroe and I am glad they did! I saw it a few weeks back and walked in, asked for a take out menu. At that time they told me the menu will probably change so check the website. You can call in you order or GrubHub it or toddle on over and order. The inside is pretty sparse, cream colored walls, a big flat screen telling you about foods from the region and letting you know about some famous people who are of Syrian decent. They have some inside seating, the kitchen is open and they have a glass case full of what I believe to be homemade Baklava and Rice Pudding. (I'll have to try that next) than a small counter to give your order.. today it was the owner Khaled he has such an energy to him and you can just feel the fact he is thrilled to be serving up some really good food. We ordered a few things.. yes get some falafel any version on them. I got the original, it comes with a great dipping sauce and pickles yes I said pickles.. long, thinly cut ones. They are fried and warm and almost have a meaty taste to them and it's chick peas kids and herbs and spices. These were yummy! Get an order to try if you have never had them. I ordered one of the pitas, I liked what they are doing with this. The pita is thinner, things are rolled inside and I believe toasted/pressed. What I got had such flavor from the first to last bite. What I got was: Shish Tawook Pita, filled with Chicken, Garlic, Pepper Paste Sauce, Lettuce, Tomato's, Onions, Pickles and Pomegranate Molasses This was so flavorful and the pomegranate molasses gave it just a nice hit of soft sweetness and the pepper paste sauce gave it a slight punch. I WANT MORE! My husband got the : Gyros Pita: Lamb, Beef, tzatzki sauce, lettuce, tomato's, onions and pickles. He said it was very good and asked for more sauce to go. I tried his gyros and I liked it and like mine I liked the idea of the tomato's and etc being cut up rather than huge slices of vegetables that become a mess. But that's just me. We got an order of fries to share, they were tasty , salt and a few other spices nothing crazy and anyone would like them. I just wished they were hotter this is minor. I gave them a quick 30 seconds in the microwave when we got home. FYI we live close so.. Critique(s): 1) Have a menu that people can see prior to getting to the cash register People behind us left cause they saw no menu on either the flat screen or anyplace else and did not wanna wait... also having people look at a paper menu that you give them at the register impedes business that's a loss of customers. 2) Take Out Order Sign I saw one for Grub Hub orders.. but it was small It would have been better to have something to alert if you have an online order come to this side of the counter and pick up. Ok.. they just opened but these are just general things.. don't at me. All in all they have a nice thing going and I will be back. Like any place things take time to get things rolling. Tasty and very filling! I ordered the rice bowl with falafel- perfectly cooked rice, a big scoop of creamy hummus, 5 pieces of falafel. I would have liked a bit more of the veggies and thought the tahini was just ok, but overall this made for a solid dinner if you have a big appetite. Baba ghanoush was delish! A huge serving with two big pieces of pita. Enough for a group to share. read more

Super yummy falafel spot! Came in here with a bunch of friends for an early dinner and was not disappointed. I ordered a Gyro Pita, which is lamb, beef, and tzatziki. I also highly recommend the Cheese Stuff'd Falafel which is with stuffed with mozzarella or cheddar. I loved everything, and it was super fresh and filling. My only issue is how hard parking is in the area, but there's not much you can do about that. Overall a great experience and I hope to go back again in the future. read more

I really had high hopes on this place and it didn't exactly live up to the expectations. I ordered a falafel pita and a gyro pita. I was super excited on receiving it as it was quite heavy and I expected it to be filled with the protein, and some salads and tzatziki sauce. However, it was filled with the salads and very little protein - both falafel and gyro. Especially compared to the other middle eastern restaurants around in Rochester. That was a little disappointing. The taste was not bad. Could have had more seasoning. It banks too much on the sauce's flavor. I like that they toast the pita! read more

I'm a huge fan of ethnic food and love to try new things. Syrian cuisine adds a distinctive flavor to the Monroe neighborhood, and is plant-based friendly! The service is outstanding with a reasonable wait time and water that comes with your meal. The mural of Syria is beautiful and adds to the cultural experience. I would recommend the mozzarella stuffed falafel- The seasonings make it taste a thousand times better than cheese sticks. I also enjoyed Baklava for my birthday dessert! read more

A restaurant specializing in falafel is the gap I've been waiting for Rochester to fill. I was super excited to try out this place just from the name. Master Falafel has three different styles of vegan falafels to choose from! The idea of having differently flavored falafels just blew my mind. The falafels I ended up trying did not disappoint. My husband and I ordered the master falafel platter and a plate of spicy falafel to share. The spicy falafels were delicious! I would've liked them spicier or with a hot sauce or something but then again I'm a little spice crazy. The falafels were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The texture was perfect and the falafel was so easy to eat. I'll definitely be craving the spicy falafels again so I'll be back for sure. The baba Ganoush and hummus were both yummy. Dipping the flavorful spicy falafel in the creamy mild baba was a heavenly combo. The falafel order and plate together was filling enough for the two of us. I normally like my falafel packed with flavor (usually herbs) so I was hesitant about trying the plain falafel; my husband says they were yummy nonetheless. I can't wait to try the sesame falafel too the next time I'm here. Ordering at the counter was easy. The menu screen is huge. There are a few tables inside. The interior is brightly lit and clean. There was a very cool black and white mural on one wall; not sure if it's done yet. There was a screen with a bunch of fun falafel and Syrian trivia. It was so much fun that I didn't even keep track of how long the food took. I highly recommend trying Master Falafel, especially if you're veg or if you like falafel. These falafels were delicious! This place is appropriately named. Khaled and his team does a masterful job preparing the delicious food. I watched as out falafels were hand formed and cooked to perfection. We had the classic and cheese stuffed falafel which are served with tahini dipping sauce and pickled veggies. All very yummy. I must say that the kibbeh and gyro pita were also outstanding. Khaled shared his passion for the Syrian spices and it is clear he masters the spices as evident in the sumac sauce, best I have ever had. We will certainly be back as we want to taste more! Delicious and fast! Right when I walked in I was warmly greeted and oriented to the menu. I ordered the falafel pita and was recommended to add the side salad which I was told had lots of ingredients and he was not kidding! The side salad had tomatoes, peppers (banana, jalapeño, green bell), olive, quinoa, feta and more. A very attractive, robust and delicious side salad. The pita was one of the best falafel pitas I've had in Rochester thus far. All of the ingredients meshed well with each other, it was very balanced and tasted fresh. I will 100% be back! read more

Yum! We ordered for dinner at work and were really happy with the food! I had the falafel wrap and it was so good, especially with the garlic sauce. Wow! I had heard about Master Falafel recently, and had to try it out ASAP! I ordered a few items for lunch today, and went to pick them up. The online ordering process was seamless, and my order was ready the moment I requested it to be! The restaurant is very clean, and has a few tables to sit at if you choose to eat in. I ordered my meal for take-out. The worst part was the wait and anticipation while having to smell the delightful aromas wafting around in the car! The Falafel is perfect! Crispy on the outside, and moist and tender on the inside. Perfectly spiced, too. The included tahini sauce is the perfect compliment to the Falafel, and the pickles on the side offer a tangy contrast between bites. The Kibbeh is a classic example of this wheat fritter, stuffed with mildly spiced ground beef and onions. Great flavor, and moist, tender texture. The Tzatziki included with the Kibbeh is authentic, a simple, refreshing blend of yogurt, mint and cucumber. Finally, I ordered the Fatteh plate. Fatteh is a plate of crispy pita pieces, topped with a mix of chickpeas and tahini sauce. The whole thing is then topped with a few fresh veggies, and pickled cucumber and peppers. It would make a flavorful and relatively healthy meal all on its own! I will definitely be returning, and look forward to trying their other varieties of Falafel, as well as some of the other menu offerings! read more

I wandered in to Master Falafel when they were newly opened and I was waiting for a pizza. I grabbed a menu and promised I'd come back. I have been there multiple times since and they are my go-to for falafel. I haven't tried a lot of other items (I REALLY love their falafel), but anything I've eaten has been delicious. A special shout-out to their Nutella and Oreo Baklava -- yum! Khaled, the owner and falafel wizard, is a sweetheart who emigrated from Syria and thankfully ended up in Rochester. Exactly what you want. The falafel is fried to order, so it's not dried out and sitting under french fry lights like a lot of places, or pre-formed little frozen pucks like most places. Dude makes it fresh right there. That means the falafel is tasty, crispy, and still moist. It comes in a well-toasted pita (like Sinbad's) with a tasty mix of veg and tahini. I got the spicy, my beautiful wife got the regular, and we both left very satisfied. We both got pitas, not plates. Looking forward to coming back and trying more stuff. The location is on Monroe Ave and have small parking lot where you can park. The parking lot is limited to people who actually come for the specific plaza where Master Falafel is at. The restaurant is small but very welcome by the owner who made these delicious food. The master sampling I had with my friend was the best choice ever we made. The food itself are very moist and delicious!!! Her daughter loved it!!! We were relieved!!! My friend had baklava before and she suggested me to try. It was delicious and a bit different from what she had. It was not too sweet or not too bitter. Just perfect and I liked the fact it has some nutty in the baklava. It tastes great! Best falafel in Rochester! I love how you can watch them fry it right in front of you and it's so quick and fresh. I thought it was very affordable and well priced. Randomly Went for the first time this week- huge addition to Rochester middle eastern options. Despite all the other places, this one offers toasted, tightly rolled sandwiches in thin pita- really my favorite style! the falafels are amazing and "donut style" for extra crisp.
