For years I've wanted to restore my antique bookcases. They are over one hundred years old, and as…read morea writer I treasure a good place to keep my collection of good books. I was apprehensive with who might be able to do justice and not ruin them. I took a shot with GKH furniture repair and restoration. I'd seen the reviews, and I now can say the reviews weren't exaggerated. When I first called Greg last November he was honest about the time fragment it would take. I unfortunately called during the holidays, which was not good. I later called in March, amd he told me then, sort of leveling with me that this sort of work takes time, like 4-6 months. It wasn't a bad wait and I was patient. The saying goes, "all good things come to those who wait," and it's true if you want a master to handle your antiques. I've sanded, stained wood before, and it's no easy task. It's a time-consuming endeavor, and I also didn't trust myself restoring antique bookcases. In retrospect the price was reasonable for the result. I now have an admirable place to keep my Ulysses, and restored bookcases my ancestors would be proud of.

They were heavily used since my grandma had 11 children and for extra money, she'd serve threshing crews at this table. The chairs were in terrible condition from wear and tear and a Rottweiler that chose to cut his teeth on the chair rungs. Greg Havenot, owner and master furniture repair guru, worked MIRACLES on the six chairs! Rebuilding chair legs that were split in two and held together with screws. I regret NOT taking before and after pictures, because words cannot describe the difficulty in the repair process. But they are sound now and look fanTAStic! We also challenged Greg and his son Damien with an antique upholstered rocking chair I inherited from my paternal grandmother. Greg explained it was stuffed with horse hair! And the cushioning was nearly nonexistent. Now, it's back to its old (pun intended) self! We are able to sit and rock on. Do not hesitate to have this gifted pro renovate your furniture. From dust catcher back to its intended purpose! A dollar value for these much needed repairs was difficult for me to anticipate. But the quality of the workmanship exceeds my expectations. How does one assess priceless gifts from our ancestors? As an aside, Greg and Damien are wonderful people. We would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone.

I provided the wood to replace door panels, and wood for shelving as he said he would install. Upon delivery, it was discovered the shelving was stained with haphazard application, requiring the removal, sanding, staining and reinstalling brackets for shelves on my time and dime! Upon further inspection the joints were not glued properly, the stain was thin and uneven, and the application of varnish was so thin scratch marks are easily made. Not even cheap furniture scratches so easily! This should not happen with multiple layers of varnish to protect the furniture. When questioned, Dave assured me there had been multiple layers of varnish applied which was obviously not true. If you have antique furniture to be restored I would not recommend NcNary's! I was and still am tremendously disappointed in their workmanship and integrity of their business dealings!

Chairs are now solid and table top shows the beautiful wood grain that was hidden under a century old muddy finish and water marks. Without going into detail, he became angry when I had questions, and hung up on me. (I was not angry-ironically was preparing to tell him a friend had recommended him and schedule.) I called back and left a message that I found his behavior unprofessional and I was leaving a bad review. (I wasn't out to blindside him online-not trying to tank his business- but I wanted him to know this was REALLY not okay. I guess I hoped it wouldn't happen to someone else.) I should have known better. I received three texts personally insulting me, my contractor, etc. etc. from him. Clearly not a good fit and will not be working together so I almost didn't do a review. I can't review the work quality. But I thought a heads up may be appropriate in case this happens again. Sometimes it is hard to find a good fit. Hopefully it was just him having a bad day but...I think it is weird that I have to block someone with whom I had a pretty short phone call. (Technically two short calls. I had talked to him briefly the week before to get information then conferred with my husband before calling back to hire him.)

The house was built in 1954-55. Prior to our purchase of the house, it had received a new roof, new triple pane double hung windows, some electrical work and a bathroom remodel, due to old plumbing issues. That remodel left the 1954-55 era bathtub in place, with a couple of gnarly, rusting gashes in it's original finish. When I saw the sad looking tub in the newly refreshed bathroom, I was unhappy. We started researching refinishing companies, deciding on All America Fine Finishes. When Ken and his assistant worked their magic on our tub, it was PERFECT! The tub looked brand new! It GLEAMED! It has been over 4 years since the work was done and the tub still gleams. I thought that very thing when I was giving the tub its cleaning the other day, thinking then, I should write this review. AND, another thought to add...Ken is a caulking magician!! I would love to learn how to lay down a line of caulking as seamless and smooth as this man can do!! AWESOME!
