Called Master Plumber because we had a clogged sewer. They said they charge a $69.50 service fee for coming out and then additional charges for the labor. I estimate it took them 15 minutes to drive to my house. The plumber brought in his auger and used it to clear the pipes. We have to do this about every 3 years. The whole process took 1/2 hour. The bill was a shocking $375.00 I will never use this company again and will warn friends and family. read more

The situation: clogged main drain line for kitchen. The solution, snake drain from clean out about 30 feet, scrape walls of pipe to prevent future build up. Yes, it is true you need to pay for the service call up front others are saying. Ok. I left my partner in charge and specified that if it was over a certain amount, I would do on my own (as I did last year renting a snake at A-1 for $65) or see what these guys would charge. Roto-rooter was 2 days backed up and a few others. Pros: Arrived on time that day! Gave accurate info but tried to upsell my garbage disposal that was less than a year old. Got the drain line unclogged. Cons: They charged over $700 to snake a sewer drain line. Total time they were here, 2 hours. I called and I asked a receptionist as to why a plumber is charging over $350 an hour during normal working hours? She said the manager would call me back. Never did. To top it all off, in their bill they do not guarantee their work, so if it clogged again later, or if they didn't snake it correctly, they would not come fix it. Had been a customer for many years. Had good luck with them during $20,000+ major bathroom remodel several years ago and had good luck with replacement of outdoor faucets (although charge was high) a few years ago. Called to schedule routine service call/flushing of tankless water heater. They were unable to give me a quote/price for that routine service or even a price range. Tried hard to upsell their "Green Club" service ($125/year). Was told without that membership, coming to house for routine flush of tankless water heater would be $68.50 service call and then some unknown charge for the actual work. But they won't tell you how much that routine service will cost. Not a quote or even a range of what it might cost. Not willing to play those games or take the risk that, once technician is here, price for routine flushing will be $500, $1000 or some other high amount on top of $68 fee to just show up. Bad way to do business. Also influenced by multiple other negative reviews, will now find a new company for my routine plumbing needs. read more

COMPLETELY UNTRUSTWORTHY. My 81 yo Mothers central air went out. They ran bogus tests and told her she had to replace most of the unit. Price ... roughly $3,500. They told her she also needed freon (sp?) Which could cost another $800. They tried to sell her a membership that would "save her money" and told her if she had another company come out for a second opinion there would be a 30% increase in the prices quoted. I bought a new condensate pump on Amazon for $60 , installed it and she had air again. These guys are straight up crooks preying on unknowing and vulnerable people. read more

I called for a quote to replace a kitchen sink faucet and garbage disposal. I provided the new parts. They would not provide an estimate over the phone which should have been my first clue. The technician arrived on time and immediately gave me an estimate of $645 without even looking under the sink! They could have given me this estimate over the phone. I foolishly accepted it because I was in shock and it would have cost me their $68 service fee regardless of whether I had the work done or not. The work took about 45 minutes and required no other parts as far as I can tell other than a few 50 cent PVC washers. To be fair, the technician did a good job and the work was of high quality. The cost was outrageous though. I was charged the equivalent of over $600 per hour! Do not use this company. Find a plumber that will give you an estimate over the phone or at least give you an hourly rate. read more

Our basement started to have water appearing on the floor next to a wall with no apparent source so we contacted 3 different plumbers. Master Plumbing was the second to come in and look, and we booked them through their online booking tool. The plumber came and looked, didn't run water or touch anything, and decided we MAYBE needed a sump pump installed (for $3,000) or the drain pipe was MAYBE clogged. He then attempted to charge us $168 for a service & diagnosis. Even though he didn't give us a definitive answer or do anything at all. After we refused to pay, he mumbled something about it's not worth a couple dollars and adjusted the charge to $62.50. I was not happy about being charged for someone to do nothing, so I gave the office a call. I was told there is a $58 charge for someone to come look at our problem that is not mentioned anywhere on the website when you are booking. I was told the service manager was sick and not in that day so they took my name & number to call be back. It has been three weeks, and I haven't heard anything. tl;dr they wanted to charge us $168 for doing nothing, talked them down to $62. called the office to speak with manager who wasn't in that day, never received a call back. read more

Extremely unethical company! They came for an annual service on a fully functional heating / AC system, stated the furnace was unrepairable. They even had another employee come verify this, I'm sure a sales tactic. They then quoted $5800 for a new furnace. I suspect a scam, so called another smaller company for a second opinion. The second smaller company made an adjustment with a single screw, tested CO levels, tested the heat exchanger and several others things. He said everything is perfect and the furnace should last for many more years. We gladly paid for the one hour visit. Don't trust these people. read more

For replacing 3 faucets, their quote was $900 (approx. $300 each)! Of course I replaced all the three by myself later that day, but they charged me $65 for visiting my house. They responded on time, which I appreciate very much. Prohibitively expensive though. I will not recommend them. read more

My 75 year old mother who lives on social security, was badgered into signing a year contract while a guy was there "fixing" her furnace. He had to come back a week later since it was still not working. He told her that the heat exchanger was cracked and that he had to shut the furnace off. She would need a new furnace and central air unit too, cost would be $7,000. Thankfully, she called me and I told her to get a second opinion. Another company came out and took a birds nest out of a pipe, which was the problem. Furnace is working fine now. Master plumbing sent another tech out and he did not find a crack either. They have refunded the service contract cost. However, beware and always get a second opinion. I will not use this company ever. read more

Upon discovering a very wet basement thanks to a leaking water heater, Master Plumbing came to the rescue. They quickly diagnosed that our anode rod had gone bad, and explained that this rod prevents the water heater from corroding from the inside out thanks to the especially hard water we have around here. Within an hour, a new water heater had been delivered and a second set of hands had arrived to help lift the water heater out of our egress window. Why through the egress window? Because our ten year old water heater was totally rusted out and the plumber didn't want to get our carpet or the rest of our house dirty. Seriously, talk about a terrific attention to detail! Everything from their quick response, to care in explaining the issue to someone who knows absolutely nothing about plumbing, exceeded my expectations. Oh, and they take their payments via a tablet they carry with them, which is just one more wonderful convenience. read more

Worst service ever and I was just trying to get a quote. Left a message Sunday they called me Monday morning to set up appointment got an email at 2:40 PM saying he was on his way, I left work (8 min away) and waited at my house for an hour until my done came home from school, told my son to wait for him to show got home at 5 pm from work and my son said he never showed, front door wide open the whole time just to make sure he knew someone was home. Called the office and they said he showed up at 2:47 but no one was here and he tried to call me but they had the wrong number on file ( THEN HOW DID THEY CALL ME TO SET UP THE APPOINTMENT). Company by far has the worst service. Called them for a furnace install and it took weeks for them to get the furnace running correctly. They finally got the furnace working in the end. However, Now I have had to call weekly for forms to be sent so that I can process my warranty's and rebates. I am told by supervision that it will be sent within the week but its weeks later and I still do not have any of the forms I need. STOP! STOP! Do not use Master Plumbing to do anything to your home. There should be a law against companies who drastically over charge the consumer. Master plumbing did a heating inspection on my furnace, which in my opinion is a good way for them to find something wrong with the system even when there isn't anything wrong. They gave me an estimate of $527 to replace my furnace inducer blower. I turned them down. After that estimate, I decided to try to replace the blower myself. I am not an HVAC guy by no means, but I do know how to use a screwdriver and ratchet. The part cost $95 and it took me about 10 minutes to remove and replace. I would not recommend this company to anyone read more

If you only need your drain clear. From my experience, their price is at least 3 times higher than other plumber services that specialize in drain clearing. After seeing the estimate cost for clearing my kitchen sink, I declined the service and still had to pay over $60 for them to come out and took a look. Not recommended if you only need your drain clear. Never have other services with them so I can't comment on that, but just from this experience, I don't believe the price will be the cheapest. read more

The worst! -5 STARS is my actual review. They are super nice as they screw you to the wall and lie. Sean came to my house twice and had zero clue what was wrong with my sewer drain. I spent $500 to have him try to figure things out and then, when I called for the third time, he wanted to jack hammer my basement floor to "figure it out." The next people (Roto-Router) came out that same day and had everything fixed in less than an hour and for less than $200. Sean also looked at my furnace and "implored me" to call him out before using the heater. He told me my water treatment system was unsanitary and that my disposal was not installed correctly. I had all of those systems serviced by other professionals and they all confirmed Sean is full of shit. (Larry Mooney heating and Dick Swanson water softener system.) I am currently re-doin two bathrooms down to the studs and had Master Plumber lined up to do the plumbing work. I can only thank the Universe for Sean and for getting me out from under Master Plumber. I now have a real plumber, Chad Oltmann of 3C Plumbing, whose work costs half of what Master Plumber was going to charge and whose work is impeccable. I was going to dispute the charges from Master Plumber for the second visit by Sean but decided to go in this direction. DO NOT USE THESE PEOPLE!!!! read more

These guys helped me a lot. The power was out during a tornado-laden storm, and the water kept rising in the sump pump system. After baling water for two hours (while holding a frightened two year old in one arm!), the power was restored. But I needed a SOLUTION. I called this company, based on internet reviews. The dispatcher was friendly and efficient. She promised that she would attempt to catch a provider who was in this area. He confirmed by phone, and then arrived promptly. He explained the options and we agreed on installation of a new pump and battery back up. He was polite and competent. The price was not inexpensive, but I feel that it was probably fair for the peace of mind! (I RARELY write reviews, but I realize that this method helped me, so I am trying to keep the karma going!) read more

I called to ask about replacing a leaking water heater. The lady on the phone was very short and would only say you have to pay a fee for them to come look at it, and if we hired them the fee would be included in price. Sooo they get a blank check??? It's not nuclear science to replace a 12 year old one with a new one of the same size. She would not even provide a price of a unit the same size. I understand labor can be a variable in this case. Not very customer friendly. I told her no, and hung up. I called another long time Cedar Rapids plumber who gave me a range for labor also, but a firm quote for the water heater. Cleared it on Monday it was backed up again Wednesday and wouldn't come back out with out charging me the same price, they didn't fix it the first time. The guy was very nice but if they are going to charge so much they need to come out and re- look when it gets clogged two days later. read more

As usual, the Master Plumber guys (this time, Sean and Dakota) were prompt, professional, and oh so helpful! They installed a new tankless water heater AND a new sump pump with back up. I was worried about the old pump... Sean said it still worked and had a decent battery left, but he didn't trust the back up (it was old). I took his word for it, and my new peace of mind is PRICELESS! Everything is covered by warranty, and their yearly inspections are invaluable. Also, their financing is great! (18 months no interest) I love being able to have this company to call on! They've never let me down! read more

We only just moved into our home about 20 days ago and the furnace destroyed itself from the inside. I called Master Plumbing and Heating and they had someone at the house inside of 20 minutes. Rick masterfully and quickly discerned the problem and helped me get set up for financing and scheduled the service. They sent Kyle out when my home warranty needed a second opinion and he was also aces. Sadie was brilliant in their office and made it easy when there was a change or question to be addressed. On installation day Ty and Bob were on time, professional and installed things without needing much input from me. I felt safe enough leaving them alone in my home whilst I went to run errands. The new furnace is a delight and the whole experience, which could have been terribly stressful, was made all the more bearable thanks to the pros at Master Plumbing and Heating. Came out to check a water heater that stopped working after 3 years. Took a look at the model and pulled it up on his iPad and said it would cost around $800 to replace the water heater but chances are it's the element that needs replacing and that would cost close to $250 to replace. Takes a pretty special plumber to not even get within 2ft of the water heater to be able to tell you that. Oh not to mention it still cost $63 for him to pull up the model # of the water heater on his iPad and say how much it would cost to replace. #servicecharge Thanks for telling us who not to go with. read more

If there was 0 stars - that's what I would have rated. WORST SERVICE EVER!!! We called these guys on a Sunday & understood the costs of weekend rates, etc. But when they sent the guy to unclog a pipe, my husband ended up doing most of the work for him. He was there almost 3 hours. Said he couldn't open the clean out due to concrete, so my husband cut the pipe for easier access (took at 3 mins). Then the guy said it keeps going in the short pipe, so my husband cleaned it out (took about 15 seconds). Then the guy said his pipe wrench wouldn't fit around it, so my husband knocked the center of it out (took about 4 mins) The guy finally came to the conclusion that the pipe underground was broke & there was nothing he could do. Was charged $564.87 for him to snake it and discover he couldn't do anything - that's not including the $180.30 service call. They are supposed to refund some $200 of it back - we'll see. Use Magic Men or Roto-rooter - much more professional and know what they are doing! read more

Very thorough with booking, verifying and following up with appointments. I've used them for repairing my furnace (all it required was a thorough cleaning). Signed up for the yearly program (one plumbing inspection, one heating inspection, and one cooling inspection - for $99 they perform three inspections and waive the service call fee if you call them for something else. I've been satisfied with the service. The techs are prompt and polite. Seem to know their business pretty well. Am considering them for a bathroom refurbish and to correct some plumbing issues with the house. At this point in time, I'm very pleased. read more

I received a Quote by e-mail for installing grab bars in my master bathroom. The quote had no details so I requested details on parts and labor by return e-mail on December 14. I received no response and made two follow-up phone calls before Christmas asking for a response. I made a 3rd phone call between Christmas and New years and finally talked to the sales rep who made the original quote. He promised a quick turn around with a detailed quote which hasn't arrived as of Jan. 4th. I have decided to give the business to another service provider whose quote is 40% less.
