While indoor gym is available across the baseball fields, with in walking distance of the practice facility. They do not provide coaches with the required equipment to run a professional league considering the sign-up fee . Just for profit sign ups. No basket balls provided to coaches from the league? Wow is like showing up to soccer practice and coach not having any league soccer balls. First time at this organization and definitely will be the last! read more

The organization itself is legitimate and solid, but like other recreational basketball organizations, they depend on volunteers for coaching, and so the coaches are hit and miss. My son had some excellent basketball coaches with Master Sports and some not so good. But Master Sports is much cheaper than competitive (club) basketball, where there's still no guarantee of getting a good coach as I learned from experience. Also, Master Sports is less than half the price of most youth basketball clubs. With rec basketball like Master Sports, there are no tryouts, only assessments and then a draft in order to keep the teams as even as possible (every player makes a team). By way of comparison, with club basketball, there are tryouts, and so to get those better coaches, your child needs to already be skilled, and should be playing basketball year round so his or her skills don't regress during the off seasons. That's where Master Sports helps, even with a not so good coach, because other recreational basketball organizations don't run year round. read more

Our 3rd grade son enrolled in the youth basketball league with Master Sports. The teenage coaches appointed by the league were ill equipped to interact with impressionable young children. The harsh tone and critique of the kids was akin to 'hard coaching' seen at the High School or College level, but woefully inappropriate for elementary aged youth. When this conduct was brought up to the leadership at Masters Sports, and we simply asked for our league funds to be allocated to a future season with competent coaches, we were dismissed. We expected better after being loyal Master Sports customers for several seasons prior to this very unfortunate experience. We are disappointed to write this review and we deserved better. Master Sports seemed more concerned with the criticism of their young coaches than listening to our concerns as parents. Proceed with caution before trusting your child with this league. read more

Both my kids have played on leagues with Master Sports and have had good experiences. It was better organized than the soccer leagues my kids have done. Occasionally there would be minor coordination issues but nothing serious, and since some of the coaches are parents (which keeps costs down), issues were in part because volunteers don't have time for extensive coordination. One of the programs had a Master Sports coach and he was awesome, very knowledgeable, encouraging, and supportive. I would recommend. read more

Wow what an amazing summer camp! This is the first time we enrolled our son in a Master Sports summer camp and can I just say I am sad I didn't find out about this earlier! Everyone has been so professional and super organized. They have so many different options of different activities- my son participated in the basketball camp and it was above and beyond our expectations. Although it's a bit of a drive for us it is completely worth it. We can't wait to get him enrolled in another session. It does appear sessions fill up quickly so if your looking for a summer camp for your child to attend definitely give this one a try! read more

Master Sports has been great for me and my son. I first encountered them before the pandemic when my son joined one of their basketball leagues. My son really enjoyed the league. Ryan was great at answering my questions. Now that things have opened back up, I signed up for several summer camps, but had to change things around several times due to family obligations. Again, Ryan was great at helping me make sure that my son has a great summer. The leagues are fun and well-run, and my neighbors have said great things about the summer camps, so I am excited to get my son in those. read more

My son Addicus has played in the Rec basketball league for seven years. I can honestly say it was a game changer for him. This league gave him a huge sense of confidence and love for the game. All the coaches are dedicated parents that give their precious time to help these kids have a wonderful experience. I Love this league, we now have two kids( 8, and 9 year old) in the league and they are learning great skills, such as playing with others, and team work. This is a really great organization that runs sports leagues and camps, during both school breaks and the summer. We have had great luck with their leagues. Ryan is very friendly, and the emphasis in their leagues is on kids having fun and feeling good about their sports. The dodgeball and laser tag and game changer camps are also really great. We have occasionally had a problem with responsiveness and getting someone to write back. But over about six years of working with them overall our experiences have been great. My son prefers their camps to other organizations right now, and they're all One week long, which allows for a lot of flexibility. read more

We've been participants in Master Sports basketball leagues for about 4 years now. The reason we've stuck around for 4 years is that its a great environment for the kids to learn basketball. The rules are appropriate each grade level and the gyms chosen are clean. Most people must remember that when starting out at Master Sports, its a Rec league. Parents and volunteers spend time out of their week to coach the kids and do the best they can to make the experience worth while. Ryan and the team have been nothing but professional and courteous in running the basketball program. They also go out to local schools to help out with fun activities. In your response you left out the part where our coach verbally spoke to Ryan stating that 12pm would not work, and Ryan acknowledge to him he understand and change the time of the game. Beyond the miscommunication, it is how your company handled the situation afterwards that has so many parents upset. In Carmel Valley, Ryan Conroy manages to manage the highest maintenance and most competitive group of parents around. It's an incredible feat! Master Sports really places a heavy emphasis on maximizing the kids' enjoyment and development. The rules are carefully designed for the different age levels to give everyone a chance while gradually increasing the competitiveness. I've had the most incredible experience with Master Sports. My son has done camps, leagues, and clinics and every single time I feel like he has learned and grown so much. My son is not the easiest child to coach and every basketball coach has been so patient and so kind with him. I recently had several bad experiences with Master Sports. The short of it was inadequate administration. On TWO different occasions MS bungled my confirmed request for my son to be with specific friends in a pod. Sadly this left my son feeling dejected and singled out as being the only kid that was not able to be with his friends at camp. Something that is supposed to be fun has left my son sad and confused, not once but twice. A child should not have to experience this with any camp esp. when it could have easily been avoided by a more organized administration. read more

The City of Carlsbad contracts with Master Sports because managing youth rec programs became too difficult. Big mistake. Master Sports is a privately owned business that does not see families and children as their customers. Their priority is maintaining their appearance with the city since without that relationship they have no revenue, no real business. Customer service is not their forte. Over the past 2 years their response to constrictive criticism has been mostly defensive and argumentative. They have been knowingly dishonest to me as well which did motivate me to leave this review to warn others. I can't trust my kids with dishonest people that dig in their heals when confronted. It's not all bad but as a customer I'm taking my business elsewhere. read more

Our family absolutely loves Master Sports and we are fans of Coach Chris who teaches the little kids multi sport class in Carmel Valley (Ocean Air Rec). He is very good at speaking to our kids in a fun, friendly and knowledgeable way. My boy has taken his class 3 times now and he is 6 years old. Our 2 oldest boys joined the basketball leagues for several years, and while it's parent volunteer based, we always enjoyed their games. The cost to join these programs is average but not cheap. For less expensive sports programs, I'd recommend your local YMCA. read more

Good luck trying to find perfection. Master Sports does an excellent job providing camps, classes, leagues and services to the community. I previously worked for the City of San Diego Park and Recreation Department and know first hand what it takes to run the types of programs that Master Sports provides to the community. A thousand participants in multiple communities is no easy task. Yet, Master Sports handles registration, player evaluations, scheduling of games, coordinating of officials and scorekeepers, and has to appease the parents and coaches that expect everything to be perfect. Is Master Sports "perfect?" The answer is no. I doubt any program out there is "perfect" for 100% of the players, coaches and parents that participate. However, after being involved with Master Sports for classes, camps, birthday parties and multiple sport seasons, Master Sports runs an A+ program. All recreation sports programs rely on volunteer coaches. To state that if the City of San Diego Park and Recreation Department would do a better job teaching the players the skills of basketball is flat out wrong. There are 30 plus teams in the Carmel Valley area. There are 5-7 city staff members at most at any given recreation center. Even if you could get all of the City of San Diego staff to coach two teams each, you would still need volunteer coaches for half of the teams. This is the same problem I ran into 25 years ago running leagues for the Park and Rec Dept. My suggestion is volunteer to coach. By volunteering you help the community, your kid will think you are awesome and you actually might enjoy it. Or don't volunteer, have your kid quit the sport and then blame everyone else. It's totally up to you. Ryan at Master Sports does a heck of a job. And we look forward to participating in the programs that Master Sports offers to the community. read more

Great league for all ages and levels. Ryan does a great job coordinating the schedules, there are a lot of quality coaches that can help the kids grow. Basketball games are at Carmel Valley Rec center a great gym and location. Would not recommend this organization, they let competitive teams into thier leagues. They match up against novice teams, not even mixing them up to make the playing field even. The competitive players don't get better because they aren't challenged, yet they act ugly and talk trash. The novice player get turn off the sport. Referees are jerks and scorekeepers are lousy. (Basketball) I scored a basket and 2 of my teammates did too. The last one was not counted. Should of been 6-0 instead 4-0. A bit later it was 8-11 we scored should of been 10-11 but the scorekeeper didn't change the score. We ended up losing 13-15 because of the 4 points that the scorekeeper didn't count. My coach complained and everyone on my team complained to the referees many times to no avail. We got eliminated from the playoffs for "losing" read more

The soccer coach clearly has anger management issue and should not be teaching kids soccer. In the middle of the class, my son came back to me so I asked him what happened. He responded: I messed around so the coach asked me to talk with you. So, I went to the coach and the coach yelled in front of the whole class at me and said: he is disrespectful and did not want to play. So, unless he apologizes he is not going to play soccer again. Excuse me?! My son just tuned seven years old. Is it really necessary to ask him to come back to me in the middle of the class in front of all the kids? You could have asked him to take a break instead of asking him to leave and yelling at me. Not to mention there were only four children in your class. If you cannot manage just four children in your class without losing your temper, you should not be teaching children! read more

I've been a coach in Master Sports basketball program for 5 years and I've enjoyed each year and every season. Dan and Ryan run a good league and do their best to keep things fair and balanced. The referees are consistent and keep the kids safety and enjoyment at the forefront. There will always be instances where a coach or some parents bring a higher level of competitiveness than their kids. My experience has been that the leadership governing the league listens well and works with you to make the necessary adjustments. It's a volunteer league and I think a lot of parents find criticism in the job others do and lose perspective, rather than volunteer themselves and solve their own gripes. Fortunately, all of the parents of the kids I've had the privilege to coach understand our objectives and have been generous with their time and resources. Love this league! My 7 year old daughter and 9 year old son both play. At first I was worried that my daughter may not get as much game time but the coaches are very fair and the boys in her team make an effort to pass to the girls too! It's so great! I have coached in the mastersports league; I have sat on the Side line as a supporting parent; and had my children participate in their camps; needless to say, this league and the people that run it put children and youth development first! I have had my children participate in other leagues where sportsmanship is not stressed and coaches do not put kids development before their own egos. This is definitely not the case with Mastersports. Mastersports not only stresses character development, but they also provide support for coaches and encourage them to support their team and the individual players the best way possible. And finally, I have seen my children develop not only athletically, but also find lasting friendships through their leagues and camps. Mastersports runs an outstanding recreational basketball league in Carmel Valley . My 3 kids have all played multiple seasons for the past 6 years and we are never disappointed. Ryan runs the program in a very organized and professional manner. He communicates well with parents and coaches and is almost always present on game day to support the very positive atmosphere in the gym . Rules are in place to ensure that players get fair playing time , and a huge effort is made to create balanced teams. The organization does a really good job with setting up leagues for entry level, young players to learn the sports and have fun. They are really good people serving our community. As the kids get older, it becomes harder to maintain that emphasis on fun and learning. The coaches are all volunteers. The experience for the children will only be as good as the adults make it. When the adults leading the activities, and all the other parents involved, support the values of sportsmanship, learning, and having fun, we will make our communities stronger. There is plenty of time for the more competitive, time intensive, club sports. What we need is more of what Mastersports is trying to provide. I think that is going to be difficult for the organization to maintain a vision of a world where kids are just having fun playing sports, when so many of the customers want something different. Youth sports in our country is moving more and more into a big business of selling the idea of the elite athlete earning scholarships to college with too much emphasis on winning and specialization at too early of an age. read more

Our family has participated with multiple vendors in the San Diego area (Bay Club, City of San Diego, County of San Diego, Boys & Girls Club, YMCA) and Master Sports provides solid choices for classes, camps and sport leagues. I was impressed by not only the quality of instruction at the classes and camps, but how the staff went out of their way to learn the name of each and every participant. Our children have also played in the Master Sports basketball league (summer and winter). Master Sports provides a fun and healthy environment where kids can learn the game of basketball. The staff has been very receptive to parent feedback and have responded in a timely manner either by email or by phone.
