Watch out! You need to understand the M.Tech model. They price based on a predetermined pricing model. This can cause VERY steep charges for very LITTLE work. The pricing model does not allow for a competitive pricing structure. If you are currently working with someone on a time and materials basis, you will be much better off money-wise. Read about my example to see this explained in detail: Master Tech comes to replace a leak in a sweat-joint under the sink. The joint is on a water line that comes out of your floor, rise a few inches and then "T's" to feed the dishwasher and the faucet. Price quoted was $323. Here's the work and materials needed to do the job: 1- piece of 1/2" copper pipe LESS THAN 12 INCHES! 1- 1/2" T fitting. 1- 1/2" fitting to connect back to faucet line. 1- 1/2" in-line shut off valve for the faucet line 1- 1/2" to 3/4" combo-shut off valve and enlarger for dishwasher hook up. Sweating Materials- Enough to complete 6 "sweats" Total time under sink for tech: 27 minutes Do the math! The hardware alone can be bought for less then $25 at both Westlakes and Lowe's. After receiving another bid from a licensed plumber and talking with several others in the profession the overall price was 2 to almost 3 times what they would have considered normal pricing. Master Tech tried to explain the reasoning. Here's the explanation: Per MT, they quote a "job" price. They base that on data pumped into a CPU and they get a number. They fail to take into account how easy or complicated a job could be, and they make much more margin using this model due to the fact they can cover a long lasting job with many short time calls. If this project would have take 8 hours, they say it would have been the same price. That's where you need to watch it. An by-the-hour tech would, and did, take one look and said they'd be done in a half hour! Pay the local small guy's people! CORPORATE PLUMBING DOES NOT PAY!!!! BE CAREFUL!!! read more

Called about noisy water pipes and they sent someone same day (even though it wasn't an emergency). Took about an hour for Justin to figure out the problem and fix it. Pricing seemed fair -- probably could have gotten it done cheaper, but speed and convenience of just having it *done* and done right were worth it to me. read more

Had a new natural gas line installed so we could finally get rid of our electric stove. Be reminded that a gas line done wrong is not like a faucet done wrong. You know leak vs explosion. Bottom line is we could not have asked for a more professional team. These two guys thought through and talked through the pros and cons of every decision made. The line had to run 20 feet from garage to kitchen going through walls and cabinets. All done and you cannot tell they were there. We are happy. read more

We have used MasterTech for a number of plumbing and HVAC jobs over the past several years. I have become increasingly uncomfortable with the pricing structure for their work. Though the technicians are always very polite and helpful, they seem to be "up-selling," or recommending more work at a higher cost than what seems to be necessary. They do good work, but it is more costly than other plumbers might charge. We saw a rather egregious example of this problem recently. We recently called MasterTech to do an HVAC system inspection and make repairs. The technician checked a few things inside the house, then went outside to check the a/c compressor. He found the freon was low and told me there was a leak somewhere. It was at this point that the situation went south. I gave the technician several opportunities to tell me that he could track the leak and make repairs on the existing system. Instead, he insisted that we would be better off replacing the entire HVAC system at a cost of about $5700 because it would take such a long time to find the leak. I asked specifically if he could repair only the evaporator coil, which was the likely source of the leak, and again he stated that it would cost so much to repair it (he quoted more than $3000 for a new evaporator coil) that we might as well install a new HVAC system, including the furnace, which he had previously identified as not having any problems other than age. I told the technician that I wasn't going to commit to a new system and that I wanted to get a second opinion. I'm glad we did that. We called a second HVAC company to inspect the system and see about repairs. This second technician also identified the freon leak. He suggested tracking the location of the leak. It took him about 15 minutes to figure out that the leak was in the evaporator coil and that the evaporator coil could be replaced. He found no reason to replace anything else in the HVAC system. He replaced the evaporator coil at a cost of $1300. Calling this second company saved us about $4400. Be mindful about the up-selling if you use MasterTech. read more

Cost me $55 just to get someone to tell me some outrageous amount to fix my plumbing. I know everyone has to make a living, but I felt like I was being taken to the cleaners! Nice plumber who came to my house (very young), but the prices were rediculous. Guy never wanted to stay on topic. It was all a sales pitch. Will not use again. read more

This company will only quote a price for the work after coming to your location to see what work needs to be completed. This estimate costs $55.00. If you choose to have them complete the work at that time, the estimate charge is waived and you only pay for the work completed. The technician will quote a lump sum price. You will not get a breakdown of parts and labor. This company's business practices make shopping around for quotes to get the best deal very difficult and costly. read more

Called mastertech for "emergency" service on a Saturday morning. Our sewer line was backing up in our basement floor drain. After not hearing from them for 4 hours I called back. They said the job the tech was on when I called in had turned in to a larger job and they'd had to call in 2 more techs to that job. Asked them to have tech call when on the way to our house. Two hours later called back again and told them to forget it. Can't go any longer not being able to flush or run any water. Had someone else out in about an hour and they didn't charge extra for weekends as I think Mastertech does. Guess they don't want or need my business enough to call in a tech for our job. read more

Our A/C went out during a definite warm spell! Called Mastertech this morning, requesting a late afternoon appointment and was scheduled with CJ R at 3:30 pm. He arrived on time, provided great explanations of our problem as well as the available solutions. With permissions, he then got the work completed quickly and efficiently - had everything he needed with him on his truck. This is our second time requiring maintenance and our second time using Mastertech. I highly recommend Mastertech for any Plumbing or HVAC work. read more

Overall mediocre service, disappointing support and pricing. CJ originally diagnosed issue as a faulty blower motor assembly unit, which was the correct diagnosis. He estimated the work to cost $1100. For some reason they weren't able to break that down in even it's simplest form; parts vs. labor (Just FYI the part is $200 and the amount of time it took me, a novice, to replace was about 30 minutes...) Payed the original diagnostic fee for them to come out. Successfully replaced part on my own, but outside AC unit wouldn't kick on. Turns out red wire had been reconnected to wrong terminal. This is 100 percent my fault, in no way do I blame them for my mistake, but when I called in to speak to them, I asked CJ over the phone if there were anything I could do to try and fix the issue. He said we have "very different tool sets" and they would need to come out and take a look. How hard would it have been to say "Hey where did you connect the red wire?" Considering this was the only connection other than some bolt screws required to replace the unit, I don't think a Phillips head screw driver fits the definition of "very different tool sets". I agreed to pay the second diagnostic, they came out, switched the wire, and AC started up just fine. When they left CJ even mentioned this is probably something we could have fixed over the phone. Well why didn't we try that? I certainly expressed my displeasure at having to pay a full second diagnostic. $154 is a pretty steep fee for ultimately 30 minutes of work and two trips to Vandiver and Paris, not to mention the outrageous original bid of $1100. Probably won't be calling on them in the future - felt like dealing with Bank of America as opposed to a "local" business. read more

I cannot attest to the quality of their work because after the sticker shock I received from their estimate, I decided against having them do anything. Two hours of work with minimal parts was going to cost me $478. The job was to install a recirculating hot water pump that I'd purchased at Home Depot (Watts Model 500800). With Master Tech you have to pay them $55 just to get them to give you an estimate and then if you decide to let them do the work, they will apply that to the bill. If you decide against it, then you fork over $55 for nothing, which is what I did. The technician that visited my home was nice enough and I suspect his work would've been fine, but good gosh, when did plumbers start making nearly $250 an hour? read more

They did a good job repairing my pipe that was busted. But I feel they over charged. I live an hour away so I had a $129 service charge (I wanted to say no thank you but I was desperate and none of my local plumbers were available). The total ended up being almost $500 to replace one very small pipe!!! Afterwards I called around and most plumbers said it would have been less than $100 for labor and parts!!! They also recommended that I report them to the better business bureau. read more

Prompt and courteous, Yes. Reasonably-priced, NO. Next time I will choose a plumbing company that provides free estimates. I wish I had done that. Now that I'm calling, I am finding many who will. There are several quality services that don't charge $55 just to come and look. After they arrived, the MasterTech technician quoted me a price of $550 to install 6 shut-off valves and screw on a shower head and knobs (all of our rough-in was totally completed and we just needed the shut-off and shower kit installed...no sinks or drains or anything else needed). I'm guessing they were too busy to get to my job and so just decided to quote an outrageous price. What a racket. I guess the $55 call charge was a small price to pay to make them go away. I'll bet they make a large percentage of their money from the $55 estimate call. Sigh. Live and learn. Just make a few calls first and find the right plumbing service. That's what I did, after making a poor choice first when I called Mastertech. read more
