Siopao and mami. I on't know what it is about siopao and mami but they go so well together. Kind of like ramen and gyouza; alone, they make for good eats but they're best ordered together and eaten alongside each other. Masuki decided to dedicate itself to that particular pair up except with a little more variety.
When looking up Masuki, you might probably notice the way everyone seems to compare it to long time mami specialist, Ma Mon Luk and with good reason. I don't really remember who but it's said some of the people on staff were once part of Ma Mon Luk. Either way, I'm probably preconditioned to think of it as a spin off to Ma Mon Luk. Despite that though, Masuki still brings something of its own to the table. Firstly, variety. Masuki offers different variations of mami from asado to beef to beef chicken, to mami with wonton and mami with wonton asado chicken. Its basically variations of combinations of beef, chicken and asado. The broth is light and there's enough noodle and meat to make a good meal but there are two things that make me particularly happy about Masuki's mami. First off is the fact that they fill your soup spoon with green onion. Green onion is probably THE perfect garnish for me. It does wonders to brighten up any dish and give it a rather refreshing kick. So a whole heaping spoon of the stuff for my noodles? HEAVEN. Second is the fact that they give you a whole bowl of siopao sauce. Dont look at me like that. It tastes great in the soup. It adds a nice salty-sweetness without being too overpowering. Their siopao's pretty decent too though it isn't the saucy, chunky kind most people would expect from most siopao. This one is kind of flakey with thinner skin but filled to the edge with meat. In other words, more use for all that siopao sauce they gave you.
All in all, I'm still a little biased toward Le Ching. I prefer my mami with a bit more punch and more of that tasty beefy flavor. But that isn't to say Masuki is bad. The lightness of the broth is perfect with the siopao since neither flavor overpowers the other or fights for attention. It's filling and pretty good when you're looking for somewhere to satisfy your mami-siopao fix. read more
