Good place to get your matcha-flavored sweet fix. This is actually my second encounter with this chain; I first experienced it a few years ago when vacationing in Honolulu with my family. I must say, even though it has its own storefront with interior seating, this location is underwhelming compared to the Matcha Stand Maiko in Honolulu. You would think it's consistent across different locations if it's a chain, but the Maiko Special is less appealing here. The red bean had more of a jelly consistency than solid red beans in syrup texture. The matcha flavored soft serve also seemed less strong/flavorful? Don't get me wrong, it's still a great option if you love matcha and live in the area. I also like the revolving seasonal flavors they have, since it adds variety to an otherwise consistent menu. This wouldn't be my first dessert place of choice to return to, but it's pretty good for what it is. I tried the durian flavored soft serve during my visit here, and it's pretty accurate. Has the durian flavor without the strong smell, which is great. However, at the time of writing this review, I think it's already been displaced by the next seasonal flavor. If it ever returns, I'll probably pay Matcha Cafe Maiko a visit again. read more

Main thing to keep in mind about this review of Matcha Cafe Maiko: I'm not a matcha fan. So I can't speak to the quality of the matcha and/or how it compares to other places. Here's what I know: The ice cream here is good. They have several flavors: matcha, vanilla, matcha+vanilla, black sesame, hojicha or black sesame-hojicha. Ask for samples if you're unfamiliar. I was able to sample both before ordering. Black Sesame tastes kind of like peanut butter Hojicha tastes like mocha/coffee Hojicha was really good. I would highly recommend. None of the ice creams were too sweet and if you're not a fan of ice cream in a cone, just ask for the waffle cone on the side. Service is great. Given their expansive menu, the staff was very patient with us. There's many other dessert items too but I didn't get a chance to try them yet. Parking: Non-issue. There's plenty of parking. Ever since I visited Japan, I've been obsessed with matcha. There's no such thing as too much matcha, and this second location of Matcha Cafe Maiko proves that. It's very similar to the other location off Buford Hwy and like that one, is very limited in space and always packed. Fortunately, this location has figured out how to maximize its space, and even has a cute little play area for the kiddos where you take your shoes off and can play with plushes! I love the variety. If you aren't feeling matcha, you can get vanilla, hojicha (a different version of green tea), black sesame or a mix of two flavors. They offer soft serve, cones, lattes, frappes, floats, in addition to other desserts, such as mille crepe cakes, roll cakes, shaved ice, panna cotta, dango, and warabi mochi (with kinako powder). Since this location is new, you might have to be patient with the staff, as some of them are still learning and not completely familiar with all of the menu items. So far I have tried the Dango ($2.99 EA) and the Taiyaki (2 for $5.50). The Dango is superb here! I tried it at other cafes and thought I didn't like it until I tried it here. I always recommend my dango lovers to come to Cafe Maiko for their dango cravings. The Taiyaki is good but a bit oily, which is understandable since that's just how the snack is made. My bf ALWAYS gets the hot matcha (M -$3.50) with no sugar. For me, even the regular matcha drink is too bitter, but he loves it. If you're a true matcha drinker then you may appreciate the simplicity of the drink. You can get it with/without sugar and iced/hot. If you like your drink smoother I recommend the Matcha Latte w/ less ice (M-$4.50). If you want it even creamier add the cheese cap- It's so nice and creamy... compliments the matcha so well (M-$5.50). If you're new to matcha (welcome aboard!) I recommend getting the matcha latte float (specifically say "latte" makes a huge difference). It's a latte with ice cream on top. I usually keep my latte as matcha and the ice cream the weekly special (Ube, Taro, Yam, etc) but they also have vanilla and other flavors to keep the flavor profile simple (M ~$6.30). You can also switch the flavor of the latte but be sure to ask what you can substitute it for. Note: Right now due to Covid-19 they are not open for dine-in. They blocked off the front entrance and created it to become where you place an order. They have 2 benches near the front and hand sanitizer. Wait time is usually not that bad. Workers wear masks and gloves, which I 100% respect and applaud them for because they are the only cafe I've seen take such large safety precautions for their employees and customers. TLDR: Creamy smooth ice cream with premium quality matcha This is my second time coming to this location and it never fails to impress. I got their vanilla and matcha swirl parfait and it was lovely. The soft serve was creamy and smooth and there were a variety of toppings in it ranging from red bean to mochi to corn flakes on the bottom (which added a nice textural component) to soft pieces of cake to jelly on the bottom (you definitely get a really solid mix of toppings with this parfait that's sure to please anyone!). They also have a variety of really unique ice cream pint flavors available. I didn't end up getting any but I took note of the Lao Gan Ma ice cream flavor that I've been searching for for a while (first saw it on subtle Asian traits).
