The service was good. The food was more authentic than the other local restaurant. I notice the "beef" items for both Mexican restaurants use the same ground beef. You are better off ordering meals with chicken. The rice and beans were good. Well, there is no hot salsa for either restaurant. Only leaving a star bc that's the only option! Been coming here for over a year spending over $100 a pop and instantly making a statement about an order being wrong turned into poor service, and asking if I'd rather pay INSTEAD of them recooking the food correctly!! and charges that are more than EVER before! I mostly drink here after work-- a meal here and there, but tonight being I mentioned the difference in a meal one shot of tequila cost me 14.45! Do not recommend! Food--average at best. Service--ONLY good on convenience! Not to mention--an hour and half before close and the only party present--the Spanish drama on tv blares with no hospitality concerned with your needs--and you are expected to receive a chicken salad when the order was chicken fingers and ff!! OH, the KICKER?? mentioning a grilled fish plate, that's never came with shrimp before now does--and you mention it.. RESOLUTION--to be asked what's the difference in fish and shrimp???? We had a nightmare happen here and my family left-never to return. We ordered our food and sat eating chips and dip. When our plates were brought out my daughter jumped up and we all gasped. A maggot was literally crawling across the hot plate. My family left and I had to stand there guarding the plate until the waiter came out so I could show him why weee were leaving without paying. Later, we were stopped at Walmart by a family asking why we had departed and were grossed out when we told them. read more

Among the best restaurants in Talladega County. This is a good Mexican restaurant in general, and I would recommend the queso flameado.

Reading the other reviews, I can't help but feel that they must have an experience I have not been privy to. (Fortunately, mind you.) I have been eating here for YEARS and have always had pleasant experiences. The staff is friendly and prompt. Great margaritas!!! You can actually taste the tequila ;) The food is always super fresh and flavorful. I am not a fan of the guacamole due to heavy onion, but that is a personal preference and dose not reflect on the establishment. Try a chili relleno! read more

Pro tip to previous reviewer: don't eat at Mexican restaurants if you don't like Mexican food. This restaurant rivals all of the Mexican restaurants in Atlanta (and even some in Texas!). Salsa and warm chips are crispy and fresh, chile con carne is rich, smoky and well-seasoned, tamales are fresh and topped with a delicious pico de gallo, and chicken enchiladas are quality and filling-rice and beans are even a cut above! Eat here if you are on the road on I-20...worth the drive into this cute town. read more

I hope everyone reads this first before reading any other reviews of this restaurant. First, let me start by saying how poor the quality is. The cheese dip is watered down. The chicken comes from a can. And the barkeep was pouring boxed wine into a bottle. The salsa was clearly ketchup with bell peppers in it. After being stranded by the winter storm inTalledega... I thought I was destined to eat ramen noodles from the local convenience store. I am so glad I found this place... excellent margaritas on the rocks, chicken taco, bean burrito, and chips & salsa. I would give it -10 stars if I could. Tostado was soggy and fell apart when I picked it up, chalupa was 1/4" thick and was terrible. They over charged on alcohol. Save your money and go to McDonalds. Posting pictures as well. read more

Took my wife and sons to eat here on a Tuesday evening. I noticed the place was far from busy. Very dimly lit, the floors creak and feel spongy in places. The building is very old. My wife nearly fell when she sat down in the booth we were led to. The bench seat wasn't attached to the frame of the booth, and moved when she sat down. The salsa tasted like a jar that you'd buy at the grocery store. No fresh taste whatsoever. The chips weren't fresh either. The food took a while as well. That's not a big complaint, because we weren't in a hurry. I don't mind waiting on a good meal. But I have a huge problem with waiting longer than usual for a poor meal. My wife was served a burrito with rice and beans. The inside of her burrito was cold! She didn't want to send it back because of the long wait time to get another one. My "Spicy" burrito was just like hers, the only difference being 2 or 3 jalapeño slices inside. Far from spicy. My sons shared a chicken finger meal. Their fries were cold, and the chicken wasn't exactly appetizing either. I will NEVER give my business to this sorry excuse of a restaurant again. My first time in this neck of the woods, so I read the reviews of the local restaurants and decided on Matehuala. This was an excellent choice! I was greeted heartily, seated immediately, served an immediate cocktail and treated like a queen! Seriously, these folks have it going on! The chips came A.S.A.P. They were warm and served with authentic red (slightly unspicy) salsa. I've traveled through Mexico extensively, so I know of which I speak. I took my time going over their extensive menu and finally settled on the shrimp chimichanga. I was able to order it with no rice, but a side salad instead. The chimichanga was just as I was hoping.... filled to the brim with LARGE grilled shrimp, sauteed green peppers and onions. It was cooked perfectly! There were at least 9 large shrimp in my chimichanga and no rice or bean fillers. The salad was crisp and fresh. Even the tomato tasted good (even at this time of year). It was clear that they take pride in their service and their fare. I was delighted and ate everything on my plate! My server was amazing.... almost too attentive... he asked at least 5 times how I was doing. I'm sure he knew and just wanted affirmation. If you're ever in this cute little town.... I hope you spend some time at Matehuala. It's welcoming and the food is deliciously authentic!!! read more
