We came here for lunch. We ordered a couple beers ceviche and fish tacos. The waiter forgot our ceviche and by the time we realized we had our tacos and there was a huge portion and ceviche would have put us over the edge. The waiter was non existent or just didn't come over to us when we needed him. Was definitely frustrating as there was a period of like 10 min with no drink and I could see the waiter in the distance just standing around looking bored. I really wanted to like this place more but due to the service and also that the bill came to like 700 pesos for four beers and two sets of tacos I didn't feel it worth it. read more

Try to get here before 6 if you want to get a seat to see the sunset. It's the only place in town really built to view it. They offer a two for one happy hour from 5-7 and the cocktails are 90-120 pesos. They had the most amazing grilled fish I had in Tulum. I ordered a side of veggies and added fish to it. The veggies were amazing too, since I was veggie deprived after being in town a few days. They had this amazing local band playing. They only played for like 5 songs before packing up though because the power kept in going off. read more

Mateo's was within walking distance of our hotel, and was recommended by the concierge as one of the best places to catch the sunset. Unfortunately, we were a little too early for the sunset and it was HOT so we left without seeing it, but the view from the Sunset Lounge is beautiful! We ordered a few beers and a margarita, the fish tacos and the chicken kabob. My husband really enjoyed the kabob, but said the rice lacked flavor. My fish tacos were pretty good, but as a previous reviewer said, they weren't the best I've ever had.The salsa they gave us was very mild, so I asked for something spicier to go on my fish tacos. Our waiter brought a variety of salsas, my favorite being the Habanero. It was super, super SPICY, but so good!! All of the salsas were good, much better than they first one they gave us with chips so make sure to ask. My margarita was strong, but the ice melted pretty quickly so I didn't enjoy it. They were good about mosquito repellants, which was very nice. We went back the next evening for the live band, Los Brocolis, who played english Rock and Blues. They were great! My passionfruit margarita was way, way too sour and they ran out of Corona beer at the bar, which was hard to believe. Super popular during dinner, pretty dead during the day but we were told it was their slower season. Worth a try! read more

The atmosphere and ambience: spot on. Service: good. Food: sub par & slightly overpriced. In Tulum, cheap food is in town, not along the jungle and beach. This is an outdoor restaurant that makes you feel as if you're in Tarzan's tree house in the middle of a rainforest jungle. That part is awesome. It's all wood and has an upstairs lounge and bar within a huge tree. I'd go just for the experience. We all had some sort of fish tacos and mojitos. The mojitos were the worst mojitos we had in Tulum the entire time. Tulum is MOJITO TOWN. This place and their mojitos were very watered down, minimal and not very good mint, and the strawberry basil they said they muddled... yikes. The fish tacos were okay. I wouldn't go back to have them, but we definitely are them. You get about 4 small street sized tacos with no sauce inside, but they have four squeeze bottles that you can do yourself. Great food but way over priced. Me and my girlfriend had shrimp ceviche, chips and salsa for appetizer. Veggie burger with fries, and steak burrito for main entre. She enjoyed her fries but the veggie burger wasn't that good. My burrito was okay but didn't surprise me as much as I expected it to be. The one thing I didn't really like about the place is the server is very aggressive when asking for tips. I understand that they probably don't get paid very well however I don't think its a good idea to be very demanding for tips. I don't recommend this place for backpackers, bloggers, and college students. read more

Delicious! The Burritos is great and the Ceviche, yummy! Is a nice place and you don't have to wait too much to have your meal or drink. By the way, Margaritas is delicious too. Not expensive. If you want just a sandwich, you can find it there too. read more

American sports bar in Tulum, this is your place. Watched Cleveland win the NBA Championship to a packed crowed. Great selection of tequila and Mexican beers. Following the game was a top notch hip band trumpet, guitars, drums & a hot singer. read more

Terrible service! We were excited to check this place out but we ended up waiting over an hour for our food while others who came after us ate and left. They explained that they ended up giving our food to another table by mistake but even that explanation came too late. To top it off, I left my reading glasses there and went back the next day but I was unable to get them back because they didn't know who worked the shift the night but before. read more

Good food, but poor service, extremely loud music for a dinner place with band that is not very easy to listen to. The waiter dropped the dirty plates on the table without apologizing, which resulted into us leaving a tip of less than 10%. However, the same waiter got angry and requested us to leave higher tip. I know business are having a rough time during Covid, however it is never ok to rip off customers. Asked for happy hour 2x1 mojitos but with dark rum instead of white. Bartender said it was fine (mind you I spoke in Spanish and he understood me/vice versa so there was no language barrier) and when the bill came i was charged US prices for watered down drinks. Paid $7 for 8oz sparkling water as well. Overall mediocre food and drinks for outrageous prices. Location is ideal though. Avoid. Drunk and druggie tourists and tacky loud music! read more

Great taco spot! Best fish tacos in the world (like the sign claims), maybe not quite....but still delicious! I thoroughly enjoyed my shrimp tacos and michelada. If you are a true foodie, you will likely not want to stop here...big signs claiming "sports bar" usually sends me running....but don't be afraid, they are only trying to accommodate us silly gringos :) Excellent service, open kitchen where we watched our food being prepared and reasonable prices. read more

I can only review the chips/salsa/drinks as we did not eat here. Mateo's is a great, casual, outdoor bar. We were fortunate to find this gem during the World Cup in 2014. We watched with other Americans and the vibe was awesome. We also rented bikes here for a few days--much cheaper than other bike rentals. The chips and salsa were great and the cervezas were nice and cold. read more

We came here to watch an NBA playoffs game and had some tacos and beers as well. It is one of the only places that I know of in tulum where you can watch sports. The tacos were good, I preferred the grilled fish over the fried. Beer on draft which is also quite rare in tulum. All in all, it's a good place to catch a game and drink some cold draft beers. read more

We were only in Tulum for a couple of night, 2 nights downtown 2 nights by the sea. We drove past Mateo's one day exploring and saw the sign for 'best fish tacos on earth' we had to stop. The fish tacos may not have been the best on earth but they were damn tasty! The mango margarita was even better! We enjoyed it so much that we rode our bikes back up 30min on our last night for happy hour and dinner. Happy hour on the sunset deck was a little disappointing! They served drinks in plastic cups and they were definitely watered down. Besides that the food was great! Not as cheap as downtown, but really good flavored and portions. Had a great experience at Mateo's. Slightly expensive for basic food but all in all everything was delicious. On Tuesday there was live music from 8-845 which was a pleasant surprise as the singer was very enjoyable. The drinks however were too sweet and not strong st all which is why I give it four stars rather than five despite excellent service to the second floor of the restaurant. read more

Good but not great. They claim to have the best fish tacos, but as every place that claims this, they don't. They were ok. I had the grilled fish tacos, that's how you judge who has good tacos. Anyone can fry up fish and make a decent taco but grilled is a whole different ball game. It was almost too simple and the flavor wasn't there. We had the Mexican sampler as an appetizer, that was great. Comes with arrachera steak, fried fish, quesadillas, and grilled shrimp. I would give this place another try. read more

Restaurants and businesses will charge you an exchange rate THEY decide which will be higher than prevailing market rate - avoid the surprise! If I had to eat from only one place for the rest of my life, it's be Mateo's. The ambiance is pretty unassuming, it's laid back, there's lots of wood and pebbles. The food is absolutely outstanding. I had the best fish tacos and ceviche of my life here. I also had a deliciously creamy pina colada which topped off one of my best culinary experiences. The service is also great. Despite the language barrier, our waiter entertained us and joked with us and got our order perfectly. This is not some small plated, 5 star experimental food. This is I've-walked-all-day-and-want-to-stuff-my-face food. A++ read more
