Mathias Dahlgren closed his 2 star restaurant to open Rutabaga, his new vegetarian restaurant in the same space. He is clearly going for something more relaxed and more modern here. The space has several communal tables, bar seats as well as regular tables and service is friendly and relaxed. When visiting on a Saturday night perhaps a bit too relaxed as we felt that things were a bit too slow.
The menu consists of mid-sized dishes and the recommendation from the waiter is 6-8 dishes for 2. That will however turnout to be a bit too much as we are totally stuffed after 5 dishes but of course the size of the dishes differ. Food quality was the highlight here, the Gnudi with truffle was divine. The josper grilled carrots were also great as well as the roasted cauliflower. The mango with mozzarella and chili was also refreshing. The only disappointment was the fried aubergine which lacked balance as the soy sauce it was almost drenched in was way too salty. That said the food was altogether excellent and for those we believe vegetarian food does not fill you up I would really say think again.
Quality of drinks was also good, excellent cocktails and nice wine selection. What I did not like was the lack of information about the wines. The list just divides them into categories of light, full, funky etc with no information on the wine, producer, country, grape etc. i can understand wanting to give some guidance as to the type but I see it as natural to be able to at least produce a list when asked - not possible here and our waiter had limited knowledge about what they were serving so had to get the sommelier over. He was also a bit reluctant to give more precise information - he was more asking what style we wanted while I wanted to actually see the options. After some discussion he at least agreed to explain what they were serving and I could make my choice. They did have really good wines and ended up having a really nice white from Loire (La Roche Bézigon from JC Garnier) and the champagne by the glass was one of my favorites (Christophe Mignon's Pur Meunier)
We were to full for dessert but were given a nice little chocolate with the excellent filter coffee (roasted by local roasters Drop Coffee). Actually one of the best cups of coffee I had at a restaurant. At this point the service was also very attentive so coffee was refilled multiple times.
Perhaps they will fine tune the service and concept as they go along but still well worth a visit just for the food. The price level makes it difficult to consider it great value for money (cocktails from 195 SEK (approx €20), wines by the glass starting at 160 SEK and most dishes ranging from 170 SEK to just below 300 SEK) but still not that expensive for the quality level. read more
