Glad we found this very cool little spot. Matgatan has a cozy hipster vibe with incredibly nice staff. My wife had the Portobello mushroom burger, accompanied with toasted kale and an apple/carrot slaw. One of the most delicious veggie burger I've tasted. I had the falafel in a pita. Also delicious. The generous amount of tzatziki sauce made it impossible to eat neatly but I didn't care, it was so good. Plus I had extra napkins..lol Not touristy at all. Seemed like mostly locals. I happened upon this shop while wandering around gamla stan and to my delight it was fantastic. The waitress was extremely helpful, walking me through the menu (they also had English menus available). The design of the cafe is great, creating a cozy and comfortable environment that felt inviting. I sat upstairs on a little bench listening to the sounds of a record player float through the air enjoying the space. I ate an avocado salad that included a soft runny egg, peas and mushrooms covered in sesame seed which was delicious. I'd definitely recommend this place. read more

I promised myself that I'd take the time to write a review for Matgatan 22 if our entrees were as delicious as the "Herring with bread" we started with.... They were! The Bouillabaisse, fish soup with saffron was delightful with lots of salmon, mussels, shrimp, peppers, served with a thin baguette. We also enjoyed the salad with marinated salmon - no skimping on the salmon with a hard boiled egg, and potatoes served on mixed greens. Service was friendly and these dishes were satisfying for the two of us. Happy to recommend this restaurant in Gamla Stan. read more

This is my favorite restaurant in all of Sweden! We've been there a couple times over the last year and it is always amazing. This most recent trip I had the sesame crusted salmon and my wife had a salmon salad. Both were phenomenal. The deserts are also amazing. This place is very kid friendly, as the even have a kids area where they can play before the food comes. read more

During my 3 day trip to Sweden, this was by far my favorite restaurant. It was so good I actually went twice. Normally I don't do this when I travel, but I couldn't resist. Located in bustling Old Town Stockholm, this little cafe/restaurant boasts a lively yet laid back atmosphere. The service was fantastic and the waiters and waitresses enjoyable to converse with in English. The food was of the highest quality. I enjoyed both the pretzel and baked salmon. The pretzel was head and shoulders above any I have had in the US. I chose the red onion marmalade, Lindenberry pate, and pesto sides. All 3 were superb and made me want to savor the pretzel for hours. The baked salmon was perfectly cooked and the fish had an ideal level of fattiness that made it almost buttery. The beets, potatoes, and parsnips were also perfectly cooked and paired well. If you're ever in Stockholm, I HIGHLY recommend you check this place out. You will not be disappointed. read more

On a budget so chose the $ price filter and this place popped up. Read about the pretzel with the dips as an appetizer and went for it. Opted to wait to see if it serving was too big before I decided on whether to get an item from lunch menu. When I saw the pretzel and the size of dips I decided to just have that. There were 6-7 dips to choose 3 from and I chose cream cheese, pate with lingonberry (liver spread) and pesto roso with chilliflakes. By far more than enough and very tasty. 85kr pretzel + 25kr coffee + 24kr tip= 134kr total. Not bad for good service and people watching if you're lucky to catch an outside table. read more

My friend and I visiting from Chicago both ordered the pulled pork. I have to say, I'm astonished at the entire meal. I started with the side salad that comes with the sandwich. I don't think I've ever had fresher produce - especially the peppers and tomatoes. Moving onto the pulled pork sandwich itself, the pork was succulent with excellent sauce as well. It was hard to resist scarfing the whole thing down. Possibly the best part of this whole experience was the cost - 99:-, or roughly $12. For such a new place (apparently only 3 weeks old!), they've sure got some great stuff going for them. Also noteworthy is the owner works in the restaurant and goes to the market every morning before opening to ensure freshness of the ingredients - really makes a difference! read more

I was looking forward to some pulled pork for lunch, as advertised outside, but it was off the menu. The food tasted great but the portions were really small. Because of that I don't think it's really cheap here. We're going to get some more street food somewhere else. The waitress was really friendly. She proposed to split a dish for two small kids. My friends and I ate here twice it was so good. A casual, locally-sourced small restaurant in the oldest neighborhood in Stockholm, called Gamla Stan. You order at the counter and they bring it to your table, but the food is sophisticated and the wine list interesting. They accommodate vegan and gluten free without a problem. I had the portobello mushroom burger, which was very tasty and flavorful. My companions had the bouillabaisse, which was rich and creamy. You can sit outside with blankets provided in case you are chilly. There is a small playroom inside for the kiddies. read more

Staff was really friendly and I went here because it was top rated on yelp. I had the Christmas plate which I thought was just ok after I ate it. However, I felt even worse about it as I woke up not feeling good and felt violently ill. My trip to Stockholm only had 2 full days and one of those days was spent flat on my back on my bed, next to my bathroom, watching tv (thank god you Swedes like American cinema) as I could not stand upright. All the after effects did not subside for a few days, but at least I was to stand upright and force myself out into the city on my last full day. I cannot recommend this place to be sure. read more

Lovely little spot in the historic center of town! The beetroot salad with quinoa, cheese, nuts, and honey was amazing, light and flavorful. The pulled pork sandwich was much better than any our daughter has tried in the U.S.--not stringy at all and with cumin. The lentil soup was delightful and filling. The herring on bread was also excellent. On tap, they have a smooth Mellerud organic pale ale, and fuller Sleepy Bulldog pale ale that reminded me a little of Lychee despite the bitterness. They were able to accomodate us even though there were 9 of us for dinner and not 4 (the maximum that their website will take for reservations). The kids with us fit into the cushioned area in the large window, and the rest of us perched on stools, which was fine as we hadn't gotten together in quite a long time and had a lot of catching up to do. They also have a fun downstairs corner for the kids to hang out in. Very affordable--with alcohol for the adults and a tip for the cheerful waitress who attended to us, we still averaged out to just under $20 each. A side note, the concierge at our hotel had tried telling us that this was a touristy spot and wanted to send us to a very fashionable French restaurant instead. They turned out to be full, and then he tried to send us to the hotel bar. I'm so glad we didn't listen to him as he was quite wrong. He must have been confused about where were going. read more
