Shauna was wonderful. I reached out during a stressful landlord-tenant issue, and she was incredibly knowledgeable, kind, practical, and generous with her time. She quickly helped me understand the situation and think through the next steps. I especially appreciated her honesty and integrity. She cared about getting me to the right resource, not just taking on a matter. She was a joy to speak with and a true wealth of information. I'm very grateful for her guidance and would highly recommend her. read more

Matlin and Associates were fantastic at quickly solving my tenant issue and gave me some great information and advice as I navigate the rental market as an independent LL in San Francisco. I highly recommend them! read more

Matlin & Associates are amazing! They took my case, reassured me anything would be OK and it was - 100%! They knew straight away how to navigate and address the items which needed to be addressed; which had been a very long drawn out process up to that point, before I was introduced to them. For over 2 years I was going NO where which was extremely stressful, and was told we were at the end of the road with no other avenues to pursue and then, as noted, I was introduced to them. I could go on and on how responsive, reassuring and honest they were but to simplify it, they took care of business and I was awarded what was owed. Matlin & Associates are someone who you never wish you have to go to but in the times of need when you need someone in your corner that has your back Matlin & Associates are there. Thank you Matlin & Associates - I will be forever grateful !!! read more

When our father died my sister and I didn't know what to do about his properties which were fully occupied with tenants. I remembered my dad RAVING about a landlord lawyer he had finally found who knew what they were doing (after 30 years of owning property and never finding good counsel). I was able to find her information in his emails and that's how I came to inherit Shauna as not just a lawyer but as a friend. My first conversation with Shauna happened the day after our dad passed as she was boarding her flight and she followed up several times after that. She came over and met with me at my dad's house and recommended an amazing estate attorney. My sister and I ended up holding on to our dad's properties for 8 years and Shauna was there for us whenever we needed her as a friend and as a lawyer. She also helped us a LOT when it came time to sell. She is incredibly knowledgeable about San Francisco Landlord/Tenant laws and she goes above and beyond for all of her clients. Shauna was sent to my dad by his guardian angels and he, in turn, sent her to us. read more

Quick response to my enquiry and gave me some good information and advice. I will definitely return in future should I need to. Thank you

I recently contacted Ms. Matlin for a consultation and she was so kind to give me free advice! She responded very quickly and even did so over the weekend, while numerous other lawyers I contacted still have yet to respond. Don't waste your time with others. She gets straight to the point and really wants to help. She saved me many sleepless nights. Thank you Shauna! read more

My initial experience with the San Francisco eviction process was horrible (time consuming, frustrating, stressful and expensive) until I found Shauna Matlin. I was in the 5th month of an eviction case that should have taken less than 6 weeks. The attorney I hired had filed several requests for judgments, reconsiderations, and continuances that had little to no chance of winning and did not make any sense in my situation. It finally dawned on me that something was wrong and I needed to shop for a new attorney in San Francisco. I spoke to a few attorneys before selecting Shauna Matlin. During our first conversation on the phone she had no reservations reviewing information about my case from the San Francisco Court website to provide me a better assessment of what was happening and why I was not winning any judgments. Shauna explained to me in detail the current issues and what she could and could not do. It was clear by our conversation; she knew San Francisco eviction law, the requirements to get an eviction and had the savvy to work the system. Shauna took my case that had a number of issues and negotiated a settlement within 3 weeks that resulted in an eviction one week after the settlement. Shauna Matlin is amazing!!! I can not say enough about Shauna Matlin, I will definitely be using her for all my tenant related issues. Vanessa Lindsay read more

If I could rate six stars I would! I found Shauna after my old attorney made such a mess of my case that I had to pull the plug. Shauna is no-nonsense, extremely knowledgeable, and very responsive. She has the respect of her peers in both the landlord and tenant circles, something which is evident if you walk the halls of the courthouse with her. I always felt like her billing was fair and transparent. Bottom line: she took my difficult case, we went to trial, and we won. I hope I'll never need to hire her again, but I would in a heartbeat. read more

I recently spoke to Shauna about a very complicated eviction situation and found her extremely knowledgeable and helpful. She listened really well, took the time to look up my property details, explained my options, and then made sounds suggestions. What a stark difference from other attorneys who wouldn't even say if they could help until I dropped $200-300 for a phone chat! I would hire Shauna in a heartbeat! Highly recommended. read more

I had problems with renters in a single family home situation. All the websites out there had conflicting information so it was very hard for me to figure out what was the right thing to do and what the law was. I found Shauna and found her to be very knowledgeable and efficient. She answered all my questions both on the phone and over email concisely and immediately. My renter problems were solved as she described. Moreover, she wouldn't even charge me for her time spent over the phone and emails, and she sent me the right contract to use, and the right letters, etc. I would definitely pay for her advice and service as it well deserved it. read more

I reached out to Mrs Matlin as I felt desperate for some legal advice. She was very kind and through in answering all my questions and making me feel protected. When I offered to pay her for her advice she refused stating that the time spent was too little and she was happy to help. I really hope I don't need to hire an attorney in my life time but if I ever do Shauna will certainly be my choice. She has something most people have lost and that is compassion! 5 stars all the way with Shauna. I'm a realtor and called Shauna initially requesting for a consultation for my client. She asked if I knew his question and advised me on the spot. I could write long paragraphs about Shauna but to sum it up I can say that she is an angel. I was in a very time-sensitive and tough situation and after contacting more than 70 lawyers in SF, my 71st call was so worth it. While she was busy and not able to take my case, she moved mountains to empower me and get me going in resolving the situation. I am so grateful for her time, kindness, empathy, and above all, top-notch competence. She is a strategic people-connector and knows the law inside out. As a first time landlord, I recently found myself in an extraordinary tenant situation that played out over a series of several months. Having been referred to Matlin & Assoc and Shauna through my HOA co-owner, I was amazed how quickly she dove in to solve for the path ahead. She is a quick read, a straight shooter and very pragmatic. I consider myself fortunate; timely consult and clear guidance on a very tricky situation proved to both protect me and outline an efficient path for resolution (and new tenants!!). Shauna just completed my case against my Sub-Tenant who refused to pay rent and refused to vacate. I am happy to report, the Sub-Tenant is no longer in my flat. I highly recommend her services. I don't intend to go through this again but if I do, or know of anyone in similar circumstances, I will be advising them to retain Shauna. For every roadblock my Sub-Tenant tried to put up, Shauna was there to counter it with action that resulted in a Settlement being reached as quickly as possible. She gave accurate, reliable advice on the best way to achieve the desired result and also kept me aware of costs allowing me to budget effectively. read more

Matlin & Associates, Shauna in particular, is awesome. I have an upcoming potential landlord situation and she walked me through all the potential pitfalls. I'll keep this short: I spoke to several attorneys (and dialed many more who were unavailable or went straight to voicemail) today. I'm so glad I kept dialing and reached Shauna Matlin at Matlin and Associates. Shauna took my call and thoroughly advised me on my landlord/tenant matter. Moreover, Shauna helped me think through some of the pros and cons of the different directions I could take my matter and helped me separate my emotions from logic. In my industry I deal with professionals on a daily basis. Most pale in comparison to the experienced counsel, candor, and observations I received from Shauna. I highly recommend her counsel if you want to speak to someone who knows the law, can cut through the BS of a matter, and competently advise you on your issue. read more

I found Shauna through Yelp and am glad I did! She has a New York state of mind which I really appreciate. She is excellent at uncovering the facts and presenting the options in a no BS manner. As a landlord, I didn't necessarily like what she had to say about my (lack of) rights, but at least the options where laid out and a game plan could be formed. I wouldn't say that was true with the other attorneys I interviewed. I highly recommend Shauna! read more

I like to think myself someone who is a good judge of character. Shauna proved me wrong. I was certain I found the right lawyer for me. However, I ended up with someone that did not know the law and talked down to me when I would bring up information gleaned from speaking to other lawyers. In the end I fired her and found a proper lawyer that sorted out my tenant problems in 60 days for a fraction of her costs. The only thing I learned from Shauna is not to always trust my judge of character, but wait until the character of the individual comes to light. read more

I contacted Shauna specifically based on the other reviews about her. Like one of the other reviewers, I contacted various other lawyers who were basically useless. I finally found Shauna, who was incredible from the very beginning. She answered all of my questions and knew what to do right away. Shauna keeps her word, is honest and responds very quickly. Also, she is a straight shooter and is extremely knowledgeable. If I could give her more stars, I would. read more

I first met Shauna in the 1990s when we were young attorneys working in a very adversarial context outside the Bay Area. Over the years, I've relied on her expertise in this fast-changing and challenging area of landlord-tenant law. I have always recommended Shauna to friends because I trust her keen insights, no-nonsense approach and her vast knowledge of how things "really" work. Shauna is one of the smartest attorneys I know and - I can say from personal experience - one of the most strategic and savvy advocates I've ever met. read more

Shauna Matlin came highly recommended and I was so impressed with her knowledge and her ability to be an innovative problem-solver who was able to generate solutions in a timely manner. Shauna is highly organized, dedicated, and committed to professionalism. Shauna Matlin took the time to clearly explain all aspects of the eviction process and freely shared her vast knowledge of San Francisco eviction law. She knows how to get the job done quickly and efficiently! It has been my pleasure to be associated with Shauna Matlin. She is extremely knowledgeable, hardworking, and her attitude is outstanding. Shauna was a lifesaver in my Owner Move-In Eviction process. I, as others here on Yelp, called her based on Yelp reviews and after several calls with other attorneys first. She was no-nonsense and definitely knows the absurdly "pro-tenant" laws here in SF. First of all, who knew there was such a thing as an Owner Move-In Eviction process. I probably should have, but I didn't. All I wanted to do was to get back into my own condo after leaving for a few years to be with my sick sister. I was shocked to learn the extent of everything that was entailed in getting the tenant in my condo to leave when I moved back to SF. I found out quickly that a month to month lease really means nothing. The notice to vacate stated in the lease means nothing. And, the biggest ripoff of all is I had to pay the jerk to leave. Relocation fees?....Over $5,000......Are you kidding me?.....on a month to month lease?....my own condo? Absurd! Not to mention I never raised the tenant's rent (it's not a rent-controlled condo) so he was way below market and he totally trashed my place, which is a complete other story. Shame on me...that will never happen again. Anyway, the above paragraph sums it up and my gut-wrenching feelings on the subject. If not for Shauna, it's hard to tell what would have ended up happening because all I wanted to do was scream at the guy to stop being greedy and just get the F out.. Shauna just kept me focussed on getting the task at hand taken care of and she was no-holds-barred when it came to telling me the truth, whether it was that I was being petty (which I definitely was at times), whether I needed to be more assertive (me again), and what exactly needed to be done...no work-arounds, but point-by-point what was needed. I felt extremely confident and comfortable with her knowledge on the subject matter and will use her for any and all my landlord - tenant needs in the future. She does have a NY state of mind like someone else mentioned and if you can't handle that and want someone to coddle you or tell you untruths that make you feel better, then she's not the person for you. But if you want a great lawyer, on your side, who gets the job done, she's your gal. read more

Relaxed. Finally. After months of anxious anticipation, a score of calls to law offices, to the rent board and the police..I found Matlin and Associates! As a master tenant dealing with a problem subtenant, I was getting so much conflicting info and was getting harassed by the subtenant and the property manager. Every lawyer I spoke with had something different to say. Shauna listened to every detail of my story; she asked me questions until she understood the nuance of my situation. I felt immediately taken care of and thought to myself "This is the person I want on my side!!!! She's a badass!!!! Thank God!!!" She gave me clear, concise advice. It's was very upsetting to not know the how bad it could get, to feel out of control while someone is holding your property hostage, not paying rent, breaking windows and sending un-nerving and threatening texts regularly. She gave me the confidence and information I needed to make the right decisions, and get through an extremely trying time! I'm so appreciative of the feeling of calm that Matlin and Associates gave me in the middle of a crazy storm. Shauna was very generous with her time. (I find her to be very personable. I appreciate her matter-of-fact sensibility.) THANK YOU, THANK YOU MATLIN & ASSOCIATES read more

Shauna is phenomenal and the most responsive attorney out there. I have wasted my time contacting three other law offices that didn't even have the courtesy to return my phone call inquiries on their services and rates, much less discuss any details concerning a potential case with the firm. Matlin & Associates was referred to me by another law firm based in Silicon Valley because they didn't specialize in SF tenant laws. That was the best referral I have ever received. Shauna has been accessible and knowledgeable from my very first phone call nearly 6 months ago and continues to be now. The tenant has since vacated without any delays or complications because Shauna was crucially instrumental in this entire process. She is incredibly effective and knowledgeable about S.F. tenant/landlord rules and regulations. I will gladly pay for her professional services again if needed as well as give her referrals without hesitation. She is refreshingly reliable, honest, and an invaluable asset to have as a landlord attorney. I can't say enough about how great and helpful Shauna is. She is the best! I was in a very difficult situation with a lot of emotional baggage and family turmoil clouding my judgment about the legal issues. Shauna Matlin defended me in a frivolous tenant litigation suit and she was tremendous. She faught hard for me every step of the way, she is a bargain compared to other jerk attorneys who charge too much and do too little, and she got me a relatively favorable outcome with a limited amount of financial impact (thankfully). Shauna only defends landlords -- exclusively -- she doesn't play both sides of the field and talk out of both sides of her mouth, like most other lawyers do. She bent over backwards to make sure I won, she is a pleasure to work with, and she saved me money in fees too. Hire Matlin & Associates and you will not regret it. read more

shauna is amazing. i've never met her in person but that didn't get in the way of her ability to help me! i found myself in a bad situation with a nightmare tenant. i spoke with several (as in 8+) lawyers to see what my options were. shauna was knowledgeable, patient, and most importantly FRIENDLY when it came to answering my numerous questions. this was even before i had decided to go with her! many other lawyers wouldn't even let me explain my situation until they received a check from me. shauna quickly prepared all the necessary documents, helped me keep my costs low and answered the millions of questions i had. she was so approachable and helpful that i felt comfortable asking her for help and advice throughout the entire process. i can only imagine if i had gone with any of the other lawyers i spoke with - i would either be in debt after being billed for asking all the burning questions i had, or on my way to having a heart attack from all the stress of not being able to ask any questions! i'll come right out and say that i was a total stress case when dealing with my tenant situation. and on top of that, i was freaking out rather badly too. this is where shauna's awesomeness comes out. i would write (probably excessively long) emails to her explaining whatever worry was plaguing me at the time, and within a few hours, if not minutes, i would get a response from her. it didn't matter if it was 10 AM on a tuesday morning, or 7 PM on a saturday night on a holiday weekend - i would get an answer quickly which made the entire process so much bearable. she's cool as a cucumber, which helped me a lot to calm down. time is often of the essence when it comes to dealing with tenant situations, and her speediness made all the difference, not just in dealing with the tenant, but also for keeping my own sanity intact. i've never had to deal with lawyers before, but i get the sense that she went above and beyond to help me with my case. i hope to never, ever, ever find myself in the situation i was in when i retained shauna, but if i should be so unlucky to need a lawyer again, shauna is the only one i'll be contacting. read more

I just bought some property here in San Francisco and wanted some legal advice about SF renters laws and property management. I saw the reviews for Shauna and all looked positive so I called and was greeted by a very rude and rushed person. After about 30 seconds she told me they don't handle property management they were lawyers. I knew that and was calling for legal advice but they cut me off and hung up before I had a chance to explain why I called. Is it because I am a man? I really don't understand why I got treated so badly. Maybe bad day at Matlin & Associates. read more
