You have only two eyes...don't they deserve the best? Dr. Matsuzaki has made several pairs of glasses for me. I use to be pretty hard on my glasses (accidentally bending the frame every now and then) but Dr. M or one of his employees has happily reshaped them. I now have these flexi incredibly light glasses and the do not bend out of shape. I have not scratched them either. Of course when you spend a heap of money on a pair of glasses you don't stick them with no case in your pocket or your purse. I have sent many people here. I'm a fan. read more

I've been going to Dr Matsuzaki for quit some time and I feel he is excellent Optometrist. My only issue that I feel that he nickels and dimes you for the services that other optical services provide for free. For example I had my own frames and just wanted updated lenses. He charged me $15 for len measurements that only took 15 seconds. And once the lens are done he wants $30 for fitting the glasses since I didn't purchase them from him. The frames are brand new.... Mainly carries only high end frame and a very few cheaper frames. We ended up sending hundreds of dollars for the frames, even with a decent eye insurance coverage. They're so amazing. The doctor, the staff,... and the parking! Dr. Matsuzaki's office is located in a small plaza with light traffic, and therefore there's always plenty of ample parking. Well... I go only a couple times a year, but every time, there is no hassle! The sign from the street says that it's $3 for parking, but I've never had an issue with not paying. First off, Dr. Matsuzaki is gentle, kind, and highly knowledgeable about optometry. I had several questions about marketed eye-vitamins (Ocuvite), and he gave me his 2 cents of the matter and different options as well. Also, they have a different type of machine to do eye dilation tests. I'm not sure if this is widely used everywhere, since I only go to this office, but it's quick and doesn't require those strange drops that dilate your eyes and leave you looking freaky all day. Also, it's quick! I believe it's an extra charge for this dilation that wasn't covered by my particular insurance. I've only gotten contacts with Dr. Matsuzaki's office, so I'm not sure how much you'd be paying out of pocket for frames. Paige and Tori (Tory? Torri?) were very kind and went out of their way to help me with my particular situation, without being overly and fakely nice, like how some people could be. They're genuine without being over the top. Definitely recommend Dr. Matsuzaki to everyone! FYI-I have VSP insurance, and they take that at this office. They take other insurance too, but I can't attest to which ones. read more

This is a long overdue review, but better late than never! I'm kind of surprised there aren't more reviews here. Yay! I found my optometrist!!! I'm going into a career that my eyes need to be in optimal condition and I thought I deserve the best! I've been going to Costco, Lenscrafters all the years of my eye health....and those are ok (just because I've never experienced a private practice optometrist) But this time my friend referred me to Dr. Matsuzaki and I had a great experience! I needed a contact prescription ASAP. They were booked for like two weeks but then they were able to squeeze me in that same week I called. =) What I think I enjoyed the most was how thorough they are! So many machines/tests were used to ensure the diagnosis of my eye health. I got my retina scanned and found that I am at risk for Glaucoma *YIKES* =( but Dr. Matsuzaki told me ways to avoid/prevent it. He recommended several different products for me to start using...for example I need to STOP buying Target brand contact solution and use the real stuff. (I thought there wasn't that big of a difference between target brand vs. optifree but I guess there is!) He even told me to eat more Natto! So Japanese! (I don't even like Natto but he said that I can also buy NattoKinase which are the pills) Anyways, here are a bunch of other pluses: There is an ABUNDANT amount of frames to choose from. Staff is great and very friendly! Parking is no problem Dr. Matsuzaki isn't the type of doctor that wants you in and out...he really does take the time to get to know his patients. I had LOTS of questions (and probably stupid ones at that) and he took the time to answer them. He's pretty funny too! I actually don't even live close to pasadena but I'm now willing to drive to get my eyes checked here! Highly recommend! read more

Initial exam for a new patient is $201 which "includes a health check" (???). Plus the receptionist "highly recommended" an additional $45 procedure without knowing a thing about me or my eyes. 4 other places I called, also in Pasadena and at a 4.5-5 star rating, were between $99 - $105 for the initial exam. I was referred to Dr. Matsuzaki by a friend. I have never had such a thorough eye exam. There were many tests that were done that I have never received by other optometrists. Makes you feel as if you are in good hands. He is also very knowledgeable and takes him time explaining the tests he is running, what he is checking for, and the results of the tests. I was also given a print out sheet of my results so that I could take it home. The staff are all very knowledgeable and friendly. Very welcoming environment with wide selection of eye glasses frames. I had a good time here in terms of getting things treated. I must say though he cares and gives thorough recommendation on what is the best package for you. Sometimes the insurance covers sometimes the insurance doesn't. If it is your first pair definitely get everything he recommended. As for you backup pairs, I usually just get the most basics and should be enough. If people don't know he advises Genetech on new product lines...which is somewhat a big deal. read more

I went here to get fitted for contacts and after spending $340 cash (no insurance coverage) I walked away with nothing. Dr told me that my prescription was too hard to get to work with contacts and that I would have to buy two pair of glasses: one for indoors and one as sunglasses...oh or i could get transitions lenses, HA! No thanks! Very nice people, but go here for glasses, not complicated contact lens prescriptions. read more

Over the years, I've referred several friends, who are all happy. He gives great advise for dry eye syndrome, general eye health, preventative care, and very precise exams and prescriptions. We were referred to him by our doctor, who uses him as her optometrist. Dr. Matsuzaki is knowledgeable, friendly and low-key. He explained my contacts allow more oxygen to get to my eyes, compared to other contacts, which is healthier for them. He also fit me with contacts where I do not need my reading glasses as much as before. He also recommends supplements to help protect your eyes, such as high quality fish oils and fermented soybeans. His staff is very helpful and knowledgeable about their products and insurance billing. He does a very thorough examination. There is a one week follow-up to ensure the contacts fit well. He has numerous eye examination machines to ensure all areas are covered. I have never had a more thorough eye exam. He can take digital pictures of your eyes and compare examination results from the prior years to help identity unfavorable trends. And every year he seems to have a new machine that tells him even more about your eyes. Unlike many medical offices, the staff here and Dr. Matsuzaki himself never seem rushed. They take all the time they need to get the best results. And don't be surprised if the good doctor spends time giving you nutricional and other health advice along with the eye care. When my eye doctor retired, he turned his practice over to a younger doctor and visits started feeling like going through a revolving door -- spending as little time as possible with the largest number of patients. That's when I stumbled on the reviews for Dr. Matsuzaki and decided to make an appointment. I only wish I had gone sooner! Dr. Matsuzaki and his staff are incredibly nice and incredibly professional. Simply put, they're happy and they're friendly! Which is refreshing to find these days. It's also wonderful that you can make an appointment for 1 p.m. and see the doctor at 1 p.m. (instead of waiting until 1:15, 1:30, 1:45...). Plus, I was very impressed with Dr. Matsuzaki's depth of knowledge, variety of testing equipment, incredible thoroughness, and overall holistic approach to eye health including the importance of diet and exercise. I have a very tricky prescription as I am extremely nearsighted and when I surf, my lenses can often fog up. Dr. Matsuzaki took the time to find a pair that fit perfectly. I remember my girlfriends and I were randomly talking about our vision and optometrists, and I started talking about all the different machines they use on my eyes and they were all so clueless. The office is in a cute cottage-like setting (within blocks of the Paseo), the office staff are really nice, and Dr. M is always thorough and detailed in conducting his exams. He takes the time to hear any questions or concerns and recommends ways to maintain good eye health. The selection of frames available is also pretty extensive.
