Mattei's is famous for their eggplant parm and with good reason. Whether you get the meat or the meatless version you are getting a really delicious meal. They also have some pretty great meatballs and chicken dishes. It's great for a weeknight meal to be able to heat a tray up in the oven. They also have some great sandwiches for lunch. The meatball sub is my favorite, my husband loves their Italian. Their catering is a crowd pleaser. It's on the pricier side but is worth it for the great quality. A Derby local on the Connecticut subreddit recommended this place, and I'm here to affirm that the eggplant parm alone was worth every minute of the drive from Hartford. Perhaps I've not had sufficient worldly exposures, but I didn't even know that eggplant could be like this: sliced so thin, as others have said, to the point of being eggplant lasagna. Just divine. I neglected to ask what brand of bread they used, but whatever it was, it was an excellent match for its filling (a refreshing change from places that phone in the bread - you know what I'm talking about). The potato salad was on the same level of fine quality as everything else. One must assume that a beloved local place like this puts the same effort into the rest of its offerings, although I'll never be able to come here and *not* get eggplant parm. Therefore, I'll walk away on each visit with at least a few days' worth of food. And that is fine. read more

I've had sandwiches and salads from here a few times, they have the best chicken cutlet! So I decided to cater from here for my sons 18th birthday party. When i got there my order was ready and i love how you can rent warmers for the food. I order trays of chicken cutlet, meatballs, sausage and peppers, baked ziti, penne alle vodka and eggplant. Words cannot describe how good the Eggplant Parm is! It is hands down the best Eggplant Parm you will ever eat! And they don't skimp on it either. The grinder is overstuffed. It almost looks like too much until you bite into it. It's magical. lol. Seriously, it's crazy good. The chicken cutlets are also outstanding. They are perfectly crispy, thin and full of flavor. I'm not sure how many they put on a grinder but it's no joke. You definitely get your money's worth! There are plenty of prepared meals, soups and salads in the refrigerators to take home for easy meals. Everything is delicious. I don't think there are any bad options. Was a a party recently which was catered by Mattei's. Honestly the best catered food I ever had. I'm a real foodie and very picky too. We had sausage n peppers, Zitti, chicken cutlets and potatoes. I first had their eggplant parmigiana 2 months ago at a friends house and I could not stop thinking about it since then! I decided to have my family over New Year's Day 2020 for lunch so I got the food catered from here. The eggplant parmigiana is the best you will ever have anywhere! It is sliced so paper thin with a very light coating of breading. Everyone thought it was lasagna when they cut into it but then realized what it was. I could live on this for the rest of my life!!!! I also ordered a tray of meat balls and baked ziti with ricotta and mozzarella. Both were very good and their red sauce is also very good. I have lived in the valley almost my entire life and this is the first time I have tried their food but I promise you it won't be the last. My next dish to try is the eggplant rollatini. read more

I was upset that they never called me to say they wouldn't be able to fulfill my order. When I called to ask why I wasn't made aware that I wouldn't have any food for my party? I was told "Well get over it. I'm over here worrying about Covid and all you care about is food for your family" that is a legit quote from the owner and then he hung up on me. This is a little hidden gem in the valley. It's small and there's no tables or chairs for you to eat in so plan on take out only. They have subs and soups and also have a refrigerator case of things for you to take home when you don't feel like cooking dinner. I usually stop in and grab a to go container of eggplant parm from the case. It's usually about 2.5 pounds, feeds four people and it's $18.00. This place makes the best eggplant parm in CT. It is equally delicious as mine and I am well known for my eggplant parm. You can get it here with or without meat sauce which is great for vegetarians. The staff are friendly and treat you like family. They also do catering, sell Durante Pasta and some desserts. If you want a good Italian sub or want to pick up Italian food to go I suggest you try this place. read more

My absolute favorite eggplant was always Mattei's. Lightly fried, sliced thin, minimal seeds, and great taste. Recently sold and tried under the new owners. The taste was very similar, but it seems there's a bit of a growing pains as the eggplant was uncommonly thick (for Mattei's) and many more seeds.
