went with my family five ppl total. after we were seated we didnt even get water till about 40 min in. took about two hours to get our meal by which time ppl werent even hungry anymore. my moms tomatoe soup was so thick and tangy that she didnt eat more then a spoonfull, ive never seen her not eat her order. my french onion soup was chok full of garlic and chives and onions were not carmalized. it was the worst tasting french onion soup ive ever had which is disapointing since it was circled on the menue as if it was a special item. (my stomach didnt function properly for a full day after eating that soup.) my dad liked the burger but after a two hour wait lost his apitite. pizza seemed ok but nothing special in the least. the table next to us actually refused to pay when they left, they ordered pizza and a salad and were not happy. on the good note they have a good beer selection. (but so does every place in the area) I took a picture of the tap. the only note able aspect of this restaurant. Drafts were $5.25, "ski bar beer" was good. Although i had to walk down to the bar and order drinks myself since our waiter was piss poor. they do have a pool table upstairs but it was over run by 6-8 year old girls when I was there.... probably why they have crayons on the dining tables. but if your going to give me crayons and a two hour wait.... at least give me somthing to doodle on! read more

Crowded, noisy, chaotic, and a lot of fun. Had great band, a guy and girl with a guitar, that were playing songs and having people sing along. Kids were coming up with them. Food was fine, not gourmet, but after a day of skiing perfect. Had pizza, salad, beer, brownie sundae. Great for kids and adults. Our waitress was very nice, no issue when we cancelled an item from our order after it had been placed. Will be back each time we are at a Sunday River. read more

First time here last weekend. Outstanding wings and great beer! That's enough for me. We went during the "Reggae Fest" and the band was pretty good. The atmosphere here is really cool - a lot of Sunday River memorabilia all over the walls. It's the kind of "apres-ski" place you'd like to see at every ski resort. I'll update my review later after I try more of their food. All we had was a ceasar salad (very good) and wings. The physical atmosphere was really cool. Old ski memorabilia adorns the wooden walls. It reminds me of a lot of the bars I used to frequent when I lived out west, in Yellowstone National Park. Rustic, traditional Americana, simple decor. Beer mugs hang behind the bar for the frequent "mug clubbers." The place was packed! I had a margarita. It was one of the worst margaritas I've ever had. It was like sour mix had been poured into a glass of ice with a splash of the cheapest tequila ever. I was with someone who had a terrible (but strong) gin and tonic. We actually returned this drink and asked for a cranberry vodka, which was also less than stellar, sweet cranberry from the soda gun. I resorted to my old favorite, something that can't be ruined, rum and coke. As I sat there in the game room area (they have a pinball machine, big buck hunter, and golden tee) I looked around at the crowd. Maybe it was the night, but this didn't look like the norm for a bar such as this. Then I remembered, this looks like the west, but it's the east coast. Specifically just above Boston, on Thanksgiving weekend. I wanted people in flannels, dirty jeans and trucker hats. I wanted to see the old lady with a few teeth on a bar stool talking to everyone that dare get near her. I wanted the 20-something ski patrol and lift operators to be there after their shifts. I wanted the guy with his dog under his table (because I always brought my dog to the bar, which made the bar WAY more fun). Instead, this place was douche bagery central. Bros blocked the way to the bar and cut in front of me. Women in fancy dresses took the stool I was going to sit on, as I had it in my hand. And preteens, there to eat, as their parents drank, roamed about. Maybe this is your crowd, but it's not mine. So, two stars for the physical atmosphere, but one star for the clientele and the drinks. I will choose to spend my money elsewhere... Or drink at home, in my flannel, with my dog. read more

We go here pretty much every time we ski at Sunday River. We head in ther on Tuesday nights for the $5 pizza special. $5 with one topping and $1 per topping for additional toppings. The pizza is great and the topping choices wildly varied (ground Bison, Proscuitto, pineapple, buffalo chicken, and so many more...) Great beer choices on tap too including their own Ski Bar beer which is one of my favs. Try and sit upstairs though as downstars tends to be very noisy, especially if parents are letting thier kids run wild. The place also has a great "archive" of old ski gear all over the walls and ceilings. read more

Our server was very friendly and attentive and the ski beer was very tasty. However, I was unimpressed with my pizza but simultaneously found myself eating too much of it as I knew how much I was paying for it. Apparently my husband's burger was good but let's be honest, he was two beers in before he got it and this was after three hours of cross country skiing. Great wood fired pizzas, Gluten Free options, and very kid friendly. Good for mixed groups of beer and martini drinkers alike. Swiss ambiance is definitely in line with their skier clientele. The bar is separate from the dining area. Has a stage for live events. The menu had a variety of different selections. The woodfire pizza looked great. You can watch the chef prepare this. Many options to add onto your entrees though a little pricey. A bit touristy with their store selling clothing and other goods. Classic apre ski bar. Fantastic atmosphere. The decor is amazing -- filled with old skis and boots. The pizza is pretty good, but I think their buffalo wings are highly underrated. My wife is from Upstate NY and she swears this place has amazing wings. it's crispy on the outside! They serve all kinds of beers and drinks. Simply a great atmosphere! The vibe this place gives is great for all groups of people. Family's and adults! The staff is kind and friendly with a positive attitude. The live acoustic entertainment was just right!! For drinks we shared an avalanche bowl. Followed by another. These drinks were very tasty! I will say that they are a bit over priced at $17 bucks a whack!!!! Also, for some reason the two taste slightly different from each other for some reason, perhaps just a different bar tender?) We ordered the ribs as an appetizer along with the garlic knots. The ribs had a sweet homemade BBQ sauce that for me made the rib. The rib meat was okay, but not the best I've ever had by any means.(I found them to be a bit tough and not your traditional "fall off the bone") The knots were good, with a nice marinara sauce. I would order these again. For our main course we ordered the speciality/signature BBQ chicken pizza. No complaints here at all!!! It was delicious! Would definitely recommend. We also ordered the steak tips! Cooked Med-Well. And let me tell you, this was the steak to be eating. VERY tender, nice Large pieces! The mashed potatoes were bland but the quality in the steak tips more than made up for it! Awful customer service. The GM of the restaurant, taller bald kind of fat guy, refused to honor the merchandise discount offered by his own loyalty program the "mug club." He was happy to take my money at full price but wouldn't honor his own discount program. Not only did he lose a customer but he also lost $100 in merchandise purchases. Of course I was deterred away and began walking into the restaurant to seat myself since a woman scowling at you couldn't possibly be a hostess.....just to be sure, however, I said, "do we just seat ourselves?" "NO," she said, like a BRUTE...and began mumbling something, I have no idea what.....this in itself made me give this place a low rating. Then, she had some other person seat us. A must visit for the area. No - it's not gourmet food - but it's tasty, and they have a decent selection. We've been numerous times - love the ambiance - the inside of a barn with lots of old ski memorabilia and equipment. Live music has always been really good and creates a fun atmosphere - for everyone from the kids to the seniors. The pizza we've had has been pretty great - good wings - nachos are huge. Good beer selection and such a casual atmosphere. Service has always been good when we are there - including amidst HUGE crowds last weekend. We'll be back. read more

Hostess extremely unfriendly. Had 10 of the 12 people in our party ready to sit and start ordering drinks and food but hostess would not allow us to sit until entire party arrived despite numerous tables being open. Then proceeded to tell us to sit and let the rest of our party "fend for themselves." Not really in the whole ski community spirit. We decide to leave and hostess told us "they didn't need our business and they would be just fine." Instead went down the road to Sunday River Brewing company where we were immediately seated, friendly staff, great food and drinks. Matterhorn Ski Bar in Newry is a place I have always wanted to try but just haven't had the opportunity to as it is closed in the summer when I usually travel to the Sunday River Ski Resort. That all changed when I trekked up to the resort for some snowshoeing this weekend. After a day slope side, Simone and I wanted to find a place to enjoy good food and good music. I am happy to say Matterhorn had both. We arrived to a full parking lot at about 8pm on a Saturday night but walked inside only to be seated immediately at a table for two. The place was busy but had more then enough room for everyone with both upstairs and downstairs seating. We sat downstairs right beside the concert stage which was perfect for listening to the band later on. The whole restaurant is designed to look like a ski lodge and has so much cool local ski memorabilia that one could spend hours just checking it all out. Matterhorn is well known for its party atmosphere but also its brick oven pizza so of course that is what I was going to try, but first it was a cold beer with some fried green beans. The Green Beans were as they should be, crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. They were served with a great homemade Blue Cheese Ranch dip that was so chunky and delicious that I got more to go with the pizza. The Pizza that Simone and I decided to split was the Weisshorn which was topped with Bacon, Diced Buffalo Chicken, Blue Cheese and a three cheese bland. The Chicken was more tangy then hot and the bacon was diced and crispy, but the standout was the homemade thin crust. It was different then most thin crust pizza I have tried and was more reminiscent of a pastry crust rather then pizza. It was light and flaky but held up under the toppings. It was good in the fact that it didn't feel overly filling but still had a nice sturdy chew. We finished the entire 12 inch pie and still had room for more dessert and drinks ! Dessert was what you'd expect from a Bar, Brownie Sundaes, Cheesecakes, and Peanut Butter pies and cakes. We choose the Peanut Butter cake and although it was not the best dessert ever it was still a solid choice. Slabs of cake were separated by slabs of peanut butter frosting with chocolate drizzled across everything. We finished it off and then settled in with drinks in hand to listen to one of the better cover bands we have ever heard anywhere, Last Kid Picked. This was a great dinner and great night at the Matterhorn. I wish they were open in the summer but at least now I have an excuse to make the trip to Newry in the winter again. read more

Fair warning - this review is based off my experience during Sunday River Ski Fest weekend. Maybe it's not always this bad.... Great place to go if you like waiting over 40 minutes for a drink. They clearly didn't have enough bartenders. Drinks weren't anything to write home about either. A great spot if you're looking to spend quality time with basic Boston bros. I slightly dislike this place but because it's literally one of the only places around Sunday river besides Phoenix and Sunday River brewing co., and a townie bar way too far away to party and eat, it gets my a-OK approval. That and their pizza is amazing, their garlic knots are amazing, and they have buck hunter and cool decorations. Wait, I always end up coming here when I'm snowboarding at Sunday River. Pizza and alcohol are incredible! Servers can be rude or slow. Decoration is definitely what you expect being so close to the ski mountain.

On our visit on the day after Thanksgiving we had a party of five, three 9 year old girls and two adults. Ambience: Energetic atmosphere, live music, video screens, and lots of animated conversation all around. Rustic atmosphere with skiing artifacts decorating the walls ( and ceiling). Food was inconsistent. Recommend: Steak tips (medium rare), Mac n' Cheese (ala Kraft, perfect for kids that know that brand), Not Recommended: Onion soup (no broth - all onion and on sweet end of spectrum), Cheese Fondu appetizer (melted cheese was chunky not creamy - had to cut and spread the cheddar. This is the wrong cheese for a fondu). Look forward to returning and try their wood fired pizza. Staff: Very attentive, picked table with bench for squirmy girls. I did not want my carbohydrate intensive side dishes and they offered double veggies, I liked it! When the video on the TV next to our table turned to dark subject matter - they were able to change the channel to something less disturbing for our girls. read more

Can't comment much on atmosphere, since we did takeout here. When I picked up the pizza (ready right on time), there was a guitar player/singing doing his thing, and the place looked pretty hopping at 7pm on a Saturday. Pizzas are all 12 inch, so we ordered four and expected plenty left over; we were right. We ended up sampling a Pepperoni, a Prosciutto and Pineapple, a Hornlihutte (tomato, mozzarella, basil, roasted garlic), and a Zermatt (grilled chicken, spinach, feta, mozzarella, basil pesto). The Zermatt and the Prosciutto/Pineapple were the standouts. The Zermatt had excellent flavor with the spinach and pesto. The Hornlihutte could have been better; maybe more basil and less garlic? Good crust all around; crispy with the right amount of chewiness. Would definitely get pizza here again, and would like to try eating in sometime and trying some other items on the menu. Visited here after a day of skiing at Sunday river. Wanted to try the special margarita with top shelf tequila, but at least the waitress was nice enough to come back and tell us it would've been over $30!?!?!?! Yes, this is NOT A TYPO!!!!!!! So we passed on that one. Settled for a regular margarita with Hornitos. A bit on the weak side, but ok. Pizza was good, buffalo wings were good, side salad was good. Decor is awesome with all the retro ski gear! Made you go back and remember when you first learned how to ski. read more
