Going to Matthew Young, D.D.S. offices was a nightmare; the absolute worst dental experience of my life. They are unscrupulous and unethical; placing profit over dental health and care. I was a former patient of Raymond Hahn, D.D.S. who referred his patients to Dr. Young when he retired. On 4/22/25, I went in for a gum abscess and was originally seen by Dr. Abrolat, from whom I purchased an office dental plan to cover 2 cleanings, all x-rays, and a discount on all procedures. I spent 3 hours waiting, having x-rays, and was told by Dr. Abrolat that because of the diagnostic work, she was referring me to Dr. Young, her boss, at an additional cost. I protested and said that Dr. Young was the dentist Dr. Hahn referred me to and I had never heard of an in-office referral fee. She also originally told me that a scan would cost extra. I protested as she had previously told me all x-rays were included in the office plan I purchased. Dr. Young informed me that my back molar was cracked and gave me a treatment plan. He did not give me any options for treatment and said he needed to extract it, put in a bone graft, then 3 months later a temporary implant, followed later by a permanent implant. He wanted me to begin the process within 24 hours, on 4/24/25 for a discounted cost of $6,823! Anesthesia was an additional cost of $125 - $2,500! I was stunned. My tooth did not hurt, only the abscess, which he lanced. Fortunately, I did not succumb to his treatment plan and said I wanted to think about it. I asked for my x-rays and was told I would have to pay an extra $285 to access the scan they had done, despite my purchase of their office plan. I then got a 2d opinion from a dentist I trusted and had gone to when I had dental insurance; he confirmed my suspicions. My tooth was fine, there was no bone loss, it was solidly in place and no further work was needed. I will never return to Dr. Young who wanted to remove a perfectly fine tooth and charge me for 2 implants. read more

Tomorrow I see Dr. Young to receive my implant. it's a multi procedural process I found easy and efficient throughout. Since the upper tooth I needed replaced was in my smile line, Dr. Young provided me with a temporary tooth that totally matched my other teeth. this was necessary since it takes several months before the final implant process is completed. Dr. Young's skills and credentials rank at the highest level. I do not hesitate in saying when it comes to implants, Dr. Young is the best Dentist in this field. read more

I usually don't give anyone on yelp a one or two star review. After the experience I have had the last time I came to the office for an emergency dental visit because my front tooth chipped. I never in my life seen a dentist who doesn't look at the patient's mouth, but will just look at the X-ray. Dr. Young did not give me options just told me that I had to get the tooth extracted and the other front tooth extracted because it is cracked. I felt like I was pressured and seen as a number, not a person. I was a patient for six years and I never felt like that before. Coming out of COVID practices are trying to recover their losses. When I was in the office the person doing the mold for my teeth kept on messing it up and used the wrong sized tray for my upper and lower jaws. I told him that its too big yet he ignored me and made me sick to my stomach on the fourth try he finally did the smaller tray and apologized saying sorry I should've listened to you. I am a patient with dental anxiety where it is severe that I have panic attacks stepping into a dentist office. I was at my breaking point it took every ounce not to curse the dental assistant out for not listening to me. The level of respect and care as well as customer service, is not up to par like my dentist office I have now. Dr. Young saw dollar signs when he saw me and not wanting to do anything else besides extraction and dental implants, which is $$$$$. I ended up going elsewhere, where my anxiety is less now and I got to keep my teeth with crowns, which was less than what was quoted. read more

I logged on and was looking for a dental office with good reviews and a good location near me or near work, and Doctor Young fit the bill! Great location in a historic building with other dentists, cute office with lots of plants and water, and extremely friendly staff and dentists. Loved Dr. Nguyen. I like how you can also play your own Spotify music and they have headphones! I'm very glad and grateful they take my Delta Dental Insurance. I booked for a certain time and then got an email the next day saying that time was booked. No problem, they gave me other options and I selected one. He may be nice at first but it's really a cover for one of 2 things, 1 ineptitude or 2 a desire for you to come back to his office to repair the damage he inflicts. After switching dentists, my new dentist confirmed my suspicions that this dentist had ground down my enamel to the point where the roots of my teeth were exposed causing extreme sensitivity to any cold or hot temperatures and that i'll forever have to be ultra vigilant because i don't have enamel to protect my teeth, especially at my roots. In addition his staff are the absolute worst in diligence. They may be polite at first but once they are tasked with anything besides checking you in, they fail... repeatedly. My comment is directly to the billing. I paid full for my dental work. A few weeks later, I got a text message from the office saying that I need to pay some amount online. What? I was almost paying that amount online. But I made sure if the text was really from the dental office. The office said the balance was adjusted off and that I do not have to pay. My question is this: If I did not call the office, what would have happened? My dentist is great. But the office staff should be more trained. read more

DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE!!! I am writing this review to warn others about the terrible dentist who installed an implant in my front tooth. I had the implant done just before COVID, and everything seemed to be going well at first. However, a few years later, its developed an infection around the implant. I called Dr. Young and he told me to fly to his office in San Francisco from Texas so he could take a look. I spent a week in Cali and lost a week of work, but the dentist was able to fix the infection. However, the implant is still not right. The metal part of the implant is visible, which is very noticeable because it is a front tooth. The dentist did not tell me that this could happen, and I am very unhappy with the results. I would strongly advise anyone considering going to this dentist to look elsewhere. He is not a good dentist and he does not care about his patients. Terrible city and services!!! read more

They said they had a appointment available for 1pm tomorrow. I was very disappointed / upset that I was not able to make appointment. For the fact they wanted me them give my social security number to verify my insurance.. I told them that I was not comfortable of give them my SS# and usually they take my employee ID and they have my birthday and full name.. I never in my 20 year of going the new dentist that they are not able to find me and it was never issues. At Dr Young's clinic, I have had by far the best dental patient experience, if not the best healthcare experience in general. Every person at the clinic provides exceptional care and service. The front desk staff and office managers are highly competent and very easy to work with; they also have a great text message system for patients to make scheduling changes and ask valid medical questions. The clinic itself is very clean and organized, with advanced technology and equipment. For regular cleanings and fillings, I have worked with 3 of the staff dentists, all of whom are very knowledgeable, kind and go out of their way to be friendly and approachable. I have worked with Dr Young himself for removal of all 4 wisdom teeth; Dr Young is extremely knowledgeable and helpful, and has a very patient and calm demeanor. Unlike some dental offices that are more business-oriented, Dr Young's clinic is never pushy to sell services or products, but are very patient-centered and provide consultation truly based on their needs. My wisdom teeth were trending to push the neighboring molars, but Dr Young never pushed me to take them out, but instead let me wait for 5 years till they might truly impact the neighboring teeth to remove them. For two weeks after the surgery, Dr Young was available directly on text, and would respond promptly himself to my questions; he even proactively reached out to check on me, and also wrote a rush prescription on a Friday late afternoon. I have complete trust in Dr Young and his staff, and have been going to his clinic for 7 years now. Even after I moved away from SF to the east bay during the pandemic, I am still willing to sit through Bay Bridge traffic each way to visit his office. read more

UPDATE FEBRUARY 2020: Han who is new to the billing team contacted me and apologized for the experience. She waived the fee and said she is talking to the Dr about this practice since their last billing person left and she has been reviewing old accounts and sending them these types of invoices. I urged her to reconsider since I owed $40 and now they lost my business which was worth hundreds of dollars - doesn't seem to make sense financially. She said she'd work on it and discuss it with Dr. Young. I am hopeful they will make improvements but the damage has been done for me. The dentists and dental hygienists were all really great. I'm sorry for them but they do need to shore up their back office experience a lot - it's part of running a services business. UPDATE JANUARY 2020: I used to really like Young Dental. The staff were always really nice and the office is very relaxing and they give you headphones while they clean your teeth so you can't just listening to your teeth getting polished. HOWEVER I had a bad experience that has turned me off them completely. Last time I went in for a check up the dentist found a little crack in my filling. Sure no problem, fix it up. That little touch up cost me $138, they said. They already checked my insurance and I prepaid for it so I couldn't get out. OK, that's a lot but whatever. Then 5 MONTHS later they email and send me a mail saying that I owe them another $50. Like WTF? They said they already checked my insurance. They had 5 MONTHS to figure this out. So it was like almost $200 to add a little bit of filling to my existing filling? I felt hustled and also it just was unprofessional. I wrote them an email saying so and they haven't replied. I'll follow up with them again. But man. I used Opencare to book a better dentist (Dr Itani also in Union Square) and got a $125 gift card for doing so. MUCH better deal. MUCH better service. I went to Dr Young for years and saw the decrease in quality of service and attitude. He is all about the money now and has displayed highly unethical behavior. His technical ability is poor but markets his business like crazy. I sadly won't go back. For example, after I left the office he changed a bill after a contract was signed and paid, simply because I declined his up-sell, which was a total scam. His technician also gave me an X-ray without putting on the required safety cape. He did nothing about it. He won't return messages as has acted completely unprofessional. I am so happy I found Dr. Young. It seems it is not easy to find a GOOD dentist AND takes my insurance. I needed a root canal and a replacement crown immediately as I was in severe pain. I called their office and I was in the next day. I was pretty nervous about the procedure but Dr. Young and Nick took such good care of me. It was a breeze. Dr. Irene Cheng is absolutely fantastic. As a new patient, I went in for a teeth cleaning and then the following week for a cavity filling, and I can confidently say that this is the best experience at a dental office I have ever had. I have extreme dental anxiety and am someone who prefers not to be sedated. I specifically went to Dr. Cheng because her bio describes her as a very positive person who provides patient-centered care. After meeting her in person twice, she is exactly that. She even called the day after my cavity filling to make sure everything felt as it should (and it did). Dental anxiety comes in many forms, but for me it was most important to be recognized as a human and to be treated as such, instead of shuffled in and out of the office and not reading my forms ahead of time (sounds like common practice/human decency, but you'd be surprised). This was the first time I did not have a panic attack at the dentist in over ten years. I left the office stunned both times. I am not exaggerating - I have tried many dentists and methods, but am a stickler for health so I kept trying. So along with outside therapy, I can now successfully say that I have found a dentist who treats me with care without making me feel like an outcast and who I will definitely be coming back to regularly - without sedation. Well I was in need of a general cleaning before my schedule gets hectic working two jobs and they fit me in the next day I called. Talk about fast customer service. When they told me I was going to have an appointment with another dentist other than Dr. Young, I was a bit skeptic but I took a chance and glad that I did. The staff was very friendly the moment I walked in and the music they played is what caught my attention, chill electronic music playing with artists I love which I instantly knew this was my new found dental practice. I met Dr. Irene Cheng during my appointment and what a remarkable dentist I was paired with. She was very helpful and knowledgable of the findings from the x-rays and quite the perfect match for me. Her personality was AMAZING and she is quite a gem to have as my dentist. Her honesty in her dental treatments are admirable and she does EXTRAORDINARY work!!! I came into this appointment hoping to just get a general teeth cleaning but I left with two fillings and some aesthetic work done on a tooth, which I was surprised that with my insurance it did not cost a lot out of pocket. Paying for a wisdom teeth extraction and it's not cheap. I called 1 week ahead of time to let them know I was picking up an oral prescription the day before my procedure and ended up sitting there for an hour for nothing. They were scrambling to find the dentist who will be doing my procedure and they still aren't going to have it ready for me. Their default plan after wasting an hour of my time in their office is to call my pharmacy and have me go pick it up myself later. Very unprofessional and unprepared. They should have just sent the prescription from the beginning instead of making me go all the way to the office. Not very confident in the procedure if this is a reflection of what it's going to be like. read more

I can't say enough good things about Dr. Young and his staff. I had two wisdom teeth extracted today (at the ripe old age of almost 40). The procedure itself took about 15 minute once I was anesthetized. Dr. Young made it quick and easy, and his staff were warm and welcoming. They were happy to answer my questions about the procedure in detail. But where Dr. Young went above and beyond for me, as a first-time patient, was his insistence on having me come in at 11:00 PM the same night of my procedure because I couldn't stop the bleeding from one of the sockets. He fixed it with a couple of sutures and sent me home. He acted genuinely happy to be there (even though I probably got him out of bed) and he refused to take a single, solitary dime for this after hours impromptu appointment. read more

Dr. Young is a good dentist so I do not have a complaint about the quality of his dental work. However the appointment booking process with the administrative staff was not smooth and ultimately why I decided to not reschedule appointments at this practice. The final issue was when I was en route to my appointment which was to start in 20 mins. I had gotten a text confirmation about just 2 hours before the appointment was supposed to start reaffirming the day/time, but got a call 20 mins before that the dentist I was to meet with doesn't even work in the evenings, so this appointment never should have been scheduled. This was not the first time I've had some scheduling mishaps (they'd call me to ask why I was late to an appointment that I'd canceled the week earlier, etc). So unfortunately I can't recommend this dental practice due to the inconvenience of trying to book appointments to work in a busy schedule. read more

I initially came to Young Dental to deal with a necrotic tooth - I know, gross and poor me. However, what a wonderful experience I've had so far with this office and its staff. All of the front desk and dental assistants/staff are helpful, nice and easy to be around. They made me feel at ease whether it was prepping for procedures or dealing with billing questions and payments. My consultation appointment wasn't ideal - I waited and intermittently spoke to staff and to Dr. Young over the course of 2 hours for an appointment that I thought would be 45 minutes. Near the end of my appointment, Dr. Young looked over my previously acquired x-rays (from when I initially found out about my tooth while living in Washington DC) and compared them to a few new ones I'd just gotten in the office. We determined a treatment plan that was a little different than the plan I had made with my endodontist in DC, but it meant saving more of my tooth, so I was pleased about it. Since then, I have received a root canal over two appointments, and I will be going back tomorrow for my crown. Everything has gone well, and I have been very happy with my results thus far. Something I don't love about prescriptions from doctors/dentists is when they give too many of something, and I do believe I was prescribed too many Xanax by Dr. Young. I'm not a doctor, but 10 Xanax for 2 treatments that might require 1/2-to-1 Xanax each seemed like a lot. In addition to the Xanax I was prescribed 8 day's worth of amoxicillin at my consultation appointment, which were to be taken before and after my first procedure. Again, 8 days seemed unnecessary when probably 3 day's worth would have been plenty, but I do appreciate he was trying to avoid infection. I just personally don't like taking medications for long periods of time. It's unique that a general dentist can do root canals, extractions, implants, bone graphs, etc. - all of which I did not get, just a root canal, but I was made aware that he could do those things should he ever need to. There are additional procedures he can do as well that I won't list, but it's pretty extensive. Based off of my conversations with Dr. Young, I find him to be very intelligent and dedicated to his work. I appreciate his passion when speaking about things that are scary to me, which really helped me stay emotionally in check. I trust him. I will be scheduling future cleaning appointments at Young Dental and hope to continue having great experiences! read more

I was very nervous for my first dentist appointment in 2.5 years... and yesterday was the best experience I've ever had! Young Dental was easy to make a new patient appointment with (through Zoc Doc), and the reception was warm and efficient. The dentist - Dr. Irene Cheng - did the cleaning herself, and walked me through each x-ray and picture to explain in detail what she was seeing. She was warm, patient, and very pleasant to be around. She did not upsell me on any cosmetic work, and explained the rationale behind a couple of dental care tips. The front desk had a bill breakdown and insurance estimates for some minor follow-up work the instant I stepped out of the chair. Even though the office seemed busy, he patiently took the time to answer all of my questions, as if I was the only patient he had all day. I can't speak for any actual work/cleaning but that was because I realized after the required 'consult' that I was being sold on a lot of services that I didn't need (and were probably more focused on collecting money from both me and the insurance). For someone who gets their teeth cleaned regularly, has good dental hygiene, and is only 25 I found it hard to believe I all of a sudden in less than a year, I needed deep cleaning requiring anesthesia. I personally work in the medical field I know many doctors who do this and it was a huge red flag for me to go forward with anything. Following my intuition I took my x-rays and went to my prior dentist (in the east bay). Sure enough, he was pretty stunned that they had even tried to sell me on the 'findings' of the consult. I completely trust him as he went to the same dental school and knows my childhood orthodontist. I would come prepared and be sure you are knowledgeable about your prior dental findings and health state. It's sad that people like this only add to the reason health care costs so much and is exponentially rising. read more

This review is mainly about my most recent visit to get a lost filling replaced. I lost a filling from my wisdom tooth at 6.30pm on a Friday night. I made a call to the office figuring it was too late to see anyone. True enough, I got their voice mail; however, the recording gave me the "after hours emergency" phone number. I decided to call the emergency number because I didn't think I'd be able to survive the entire weekend with a gaping hole in my tooth. Within SECONDS of calling the emergency number, Dr. Young called me back! It turns out he was still in the office. I explained to him what had happened, and he offered to see me "NOW"! Unfortunately I had to head to the airport, so that wasn't going to work for me. Dr. Young then told me about some temporary filling material you can pick up at Walgreens (DenTemp - it's amazing!), and fill the cavity yourself. It's like silly putty that you shove into the filling hole and it then hardens so you can eat on it! Dr. Young also scheduled me for an 8am Monday appointment to get the filling fixed. THIS VISIT WAS FREE! I assume since he did the original filling, he figured it was his fault that it came out, and that he should fix it free of charge (who knows - I was only eating a snickerdoodle when it fell out). That's just good business. The repair appointment went pretty well. I seem to need about three times the normal amount of novocaine to get numbed up, so it was a bit painful. But it was fixed. The only downside to the office, and this has happened over several appointments, are the dental hygienists. They can be a bit rough - especially with the suction thing. And when I was getting my filling replaced, the hygienist ended up shooting water down my windpipe causing me to choke/cough violently. She just looked at me as if I was being dramatic. Uh, no...you just shot water down my lungs! When I told her what she had done, she just blankly stared at me. Umm...thanks. Anyway, for as much as going to the dentist can suck, Dr. Young makes it a pretty tolerable experience. UPDATE: 21 May 2009 I was in for a routine cleaning. They have a new (well, at least to me) hygienist who was very gentle! I think her name was Kelly. She was a nice change from some of the other hygienists who were a little rough. Kelly was fantastic. They also got a new x-ray machine -- the kind that circles around your head & gives one big image of your entire mouth. read more

This review is long overdue, but this is for Dr. Van. I came here for wisdom teeth extraction, and I had a great experience. My HSA and dental insurance at the time covered everything I needed. Dr. Van had great chairside manner, and made the experience of getting my wisdom teeth pulled out as pleasant as having your wisdom teeth pulled out could be. He genuinely seemed to care for his patients, and I was even able to get him on the phone when I had a question for him. He was patient and thorough in explaining the dental work he was doing. As a healthcare provider myself, I think Dr. Van is doing a great job of being friendly and approachable, as well as being informative. Having had many less than ideal experiences with dentists before, I felt like Dr. Van's service was above and beyond. read more

I normally dread going to the dentist. I've spent years avoiding dental appointments and yes, the overall health of my mouth. A few months ago my mouth finally decided to fight back with a horrible toothache and I soon found myself in desperate need of a dentist. After thumbing through pages of my insurance company's provider directory I contacted Dr. Young's office and in minutes was scheduled for a next day appointment. I will avoid the details but will tell you that my teeth required a little extra work and I became somewhat of an office regular. In all my visits I felt completely comfortable and didn't experience any of the usual dread/anxiety. I was so impressed with the caring and friendly atmosphere of the office. The new patient paperwork was minimal. The office is practically paperless and has forms readily available via the website. I can't comment on the wait time because I don't think I was ever in the waiting room long enough to crack the pages of a magazine before I was called back to the exam room. Every charge, patient responsibility and insurance requirement was described in full detail. Dr. Young explained each procedure to me before, during and after each visit and personally called to follow up. In short, I don't dread the dentist anymore. I truly enjoy going to Dr. Young's office. Not only is Dr. Young fantastic, I love his staff. When I walk in the door, I feel like I am visiting old friends. I'm greeted by name and everyone is pleasant, friendly and knowledgeable. I feel like more than a name on a list of patients.
