I have a kid with special needs so being touched is an issue. On top of that, he is having a delicate hair problem. Haircuts are a challenge to say the least. I found this shop on my Yelp app and I could not have been more pleased. Better - my son was thrilled. Matt cut his hair and he treated his issues with proper respect. He was amiable and got my son to talk and open up (very hard to do) to make him comfortable. He was able to give him a great cut and to hide the issue he was having with his hair. The cut was a reasonable $14 (warning: cash only) and it is "first come, first served.. We went on a very busy Thursday but the wait went fast. I'm giving this two stars rather than one because the haircuts really aren't bad, and the place is bright and attractive. My problem with Matt's is that the place is phenomenally popular with dead-eyed college kids. Every time I walk in there, no matter the day or time, the limited seating is packed with surly and unpleasant college creeps. That's not the management's fault, but the lack of attention to the waiting clientele is. While waiting in one of the seats, I noticed fifteen minutes had gone by with no barber chairs opening up or clients moving along. That's fine-ish, but each of these kids were getting the same haircut, and each looked like a simple buzzcut. I'm not up on the hidden intricacies of haircutting, but it seems to me that a haircut I could administer myself with thirty seconds and a pair of clippers shouldn't take that long. Whatever... that's okay, maybe the guys are serious about their work. Then I notice that they're just not moving very fast. One guy in particular, a big tattooed dude, is having a conversation with the guy in his chair. He stops cutting and holds out his arms like he's Larry David, ceasing to cut for a pretty long stretch while he goes about his point. There's a huge line over here, man, stop lollygagging. I decided to stop being mad about it and just got up and left. I went to the place across the street, which isn't ever crowded. ...Admittedly the haircuts are a bit worse but I can deal with that to salvage that time I would have otherwise spent shoulder-to-shoulder with douchey frat kids. read more

Matt's Barber Shop is the best barber shop I've ever been to. They have a small rotation of barbers who are all very well trained, experienced, and banter periodically. Tuesday are by appointment only (probably a few weeks to a month in advance if you want Matt specifically), every other day is walk-ins with a sign-in sheet where you put your name and any specific barber(s) you want. No matter who cuts my hair, the barber has always paid attention to my request, asked clarifying questions, and had an excellent attention to detail. I often get a fade on the sides/back from around an inch down to skin at the bottom, and it's almost always completely clean: no errant hairs and no uneven gradients. They've looked over the same area numerous times from different angles to ensure it's as perfect as they can realistically achieve. Most times you come in here, expect to wait between 45 minutes to an hour and a half to get in a chair. If you're unlucky or it's a Friday afternoon, maybe 2 hours. If you come in real early or get real lucky, you might even get your hair cut right away. Depending on how specifically you ask for your haircut, it can take between ~20 minutes to 45 minutes. I had the latter happen to me once, and since I wasn't in a rush I really appreciate the work he put in. It was a bit much but I couldn't fault him for really making sure it was good. At the end they'll do a straight razor neck shave and style your hair if you so desire. They typically use Suavecito water-based pomade. Prices are very reasonable for the quality of work, I think $15 or $16 for a regular men's haircut, but by the end you'll feel compelled to just hand them a $20 and be on your merry way. I moved to Springfield in August and asked a Facebook group where to get a good haircut for a fair price and was directed to Matt's. I waited two hours (which I expected because I didn't sign up until almost noon on a Saturday) but it was a gorgeous day, so I hung around outside and enjoyed a coffee, played games on my phone, and read a book. When it was my turn, the cut was great. The barber did a great job, even showing me a couple of ideas on his phone to make sure I'd be completely satisfied. At $16, it's a bargain for such good service. I'll echo all the recommendations that you get there EARLY. This next cut, I'm going to get there as close to 8am as I can. :) read more

Wait wasn't too long. Went on a Monday an hour and half before close. Walked in, only one person in front of me. Long haircut, these people really do take their time on your head. Great cut, great lineup, plus they shave your neck and put on aftershave. approx 35-40 min in the chair. 20-25 min wait time. Would recommend if you're not on a time crunch. read more

Pros: - Great haircuts. Stefan is awesome in my experience, but I think they all give great haircuts. Cons: - Long waits. Walk in days, even right when they open, expect about an hour to an hour and a half. If you make an appointment, which they only do on Tuesdays, try getting one with Stefan. He will take you usually on time. I made an appointment several times and I've always waited. Once I got there 20 mins early for a 4:30 appointment, waited 10 minutes while Eddie finished up, which was fine, then get up to see him for my appointment. Then I notice someone else getting up with me, someone who came in after me, and he goes in Eddie's chair. I say, "Hey... I think I have an appointment with you for 4:30" and he says he's running late. 10 minutes is running late. Taking someone else during my time would mean that I would probably be waiting another 45 minutes making my 4:30 appointment around 5:30. I base this on the many times I'd go in on a walk in day and I see they're taking about 45 minutes. There are other reviews on here saying the same thing and suggesting longer waits during appointment days and otherwise. They take forever to cut hair. Maybe the appointments should be every hour on Tuesdays instead of every half an hour. This place is extremely busy for the amount of people coming in and the amount of barbers they have. It's just as busy on weekdays as it is on Saturdays. If you come the moment they open, you usually see people outside waiting. I've started giving myself buzz cuts with my own electric razor when my hair gets too long, but I'd honestly rather get a haircut from this place because it's a great cut. They just don't have it together enough for me to waste all this time waiting even for appointments. It's too bad because I feel like I don't have any other options for a good haircut in Amherst. My suggestion: Open your own barbershop if you're able to and get people who cut hair well and make sure you can handle the demand because if you do, you will probably make a ton of money and do Matt a favor by helping him balance his demand and he will get better reviews while still making money. Also, hopefully he considers hiring someone new who's reliable as it seems like a lot of people come and go. I was told that several people just stopped showing up to work. Just another reason why they seem to be backed up and are unable to handle all the people coming in. read more

I previously gave Matt's 2 stars, but now I am giving it three stars. I have been back twice since I had a negative experience last year. The wait is rough and I still question how well all the hair cutting machines are cleaned before/after each use, as I frequently have another guys hair on me when I leave. My cuts have been ok, nothing to write home about but they haven't been terrible. I recommend John, he has given me the best haircut there. I'll likely be back next week because there are not many options in Amherst to get a decent haircut, and based on that experience I'll likely update this review. read more

Certainly the best barbershop in Amherst. Good ambiance, usually not too long of a wait, plenty of chatter, and really good old-school barbershop haircuts. Not where I'd go if I had a long hairstyle, but for the short 'do I have these days Matt's does a fine job. And for 13 bucks, I can't complain a bit. I've had cuts from three of the four or five barbers who work there, and they've all been equally good. Never actually had Matt himself cut my hair, but I've seen him work and he's good too. I usually go to Matt's and walk out with a good cut all the time, but last time I had the most horrible experience. I asked the barber to do medium on top ,tapered sides and back. He did entirely opposite of what I asked for.. In the end he left me with a round head since he had screwed it up beyond any help! Definitely my last visit to this place.!! read more

I think the haircuts are $14 now. I came away with a solid haircut. However, a newer guy (not Matt) nicked me (to put it mildly) with the straight razor. I actually didn't realize he'd cut me until after I left, which was a problem because I reached back to touch the part of my neck that was "sore" and my hand got rather bloody. I could have used a heads-up on that one. I didn't realize I was sporting an inch long laceration until I got home and my gf got upset. As I said, the haircut was solid. I'll probably return anyway and still ask for the straight razor again, because who doesn't like a little adventure? Nevertheless, a little heads-up "Sorry, nicked you a bit!" would be nice in the future. read more

I was at the chicago music festival lollapalooza on tour with a band I choose not to name. Matt Ketchum was paid to provide a free service to the artist in the artist village. So I signed up for an appointment to have my hair cut. I told him I am growing my hair out and not to cut the long hair but I don't want to look shaggy so I need him to trim up the bottom back and sides so all the hair comes down to the same length. I used my hands to indicate the line where I wanted him to cut below. He said sure I can do that. He started In the back and the sides where I couldn't see what he was doing then he comes out my 9 inch long bangs, I thought he was checking for length until he lopped of 4 inches right I front of my eyes!!! I was shocked and asked him "what are you doing?" He said I'm making all your hair the same length so it grows out evenly!!! I said go ahead you have already ruined my hair now! So he finished trimming my bangs then said he was done! I then felt the back of my hair which was still long and on my collar! I told him as I grabbed the hair in the back of my neck and said this is what I asked you to cut not the long hair but he cut all my long hair short and left the hair I asked him to cut. I then asked him to taper the bottom two inches of the hair in the back just to get it off my collar. I asked him if that makes sense he mocked me saying "if it makes sense to you it makes sense to me" This was the only directions he actually could follow. He then charged me $45.00 for a haircut that the festival paid him to provide for free to us artist performing!!! I don't care about paying the money but his blatant actions of doing exactly what I requested then mocking me and charging on top of destroying my look is absolutely uncalled for!!! If you have long hair avoid this guy at all cost!!!! Apparently he hates long hair and will convince you he can do the job well only to chop it all off and leave you looking shaggy!!! read more

I used to go here whenever I needed a cut at school, back when I had shorter hair. Now I wear my hair longer than before. I do NOT recommend coming here if you have longer hair and want to keep it that way. Both times I have asked for a trim I've walked away with 75% of my hair chopped off. Matt is fantastic. When he started up a couple of years ago I wandered into his more or less empty barber shop thinking I would get a cheap haircut and move on with life. That was not the case, he was funny, and the haircut was one of the best I've ever gotten. It was so good, I made my roommate go get his hair cut there. It's very inexpensive ($13 the last time I was there), but he will spend as long as he needs to to make your hair perfect. Not surprising now, it's hard to get in to see him, he's hired 3-4 more barbers just to keep up with the customers. Even then it can be a wait if you come at a peak time. But even the barbers he hires he holds to a very high standard. This is probably the best place in town to get a short haircut. He even does a straight razor shave on the back of your neck to add that extra smooth touch. It's so good, it makes me want to go get bi-weekly haircuts. Allas since I have now moved, he's a little too far away for that, but I still make the trek every once and a while. read more
