The "diagnosis" amounted to briefly checking and SMELLING the gas cap, yet we were charged $150 for that alone. Afterward, we were told we owed an additional $75 that had not been clearly discussed upfront. When we questioned the extra charge, we were told the balance could be sent to collections, which felt unnecessarily aggressive given the situation. The biggest issue was the lack of transparency around pricing and what services were actually being performed. If you do choose to work with them, I highly recommend getting a detailed quote in writing before agreeing to anything. Overall, this was a frustrating experience that left us feeling taken advantage of during an already stressful time. So disappointing. If you know cars, avoid Matt's Motor Works. I booked him for walnut blasting, confirmed days in advance, and only at the last minute did he tell me he was a mobile mechanic. Walnut blasting isn't something you do mobile --nor is it recommended for outdoor use near homes or neighbors due to the difficulty of containing the airborne dust and debris. He showed up unprepared, hoping I'd settle for a chemical intake cleaner instead. He burned 30+ minutes talking about car trivia, pulled a spark plug with the battery still connected and the engine hot (a rookie mistake that risks real damage), and then tried running an OBD2 scan with a dead reader. None of this addressed the service I asked for--only to buy time, which he then charged me $65 for, based on what he thought was right. Transparency wasn't there from start to finish. In the end, I rearranged my schedule, got no real work done, and paid for wasted time. From preparation to honesty to execution--everything fell short. Called for quote to replace my intake manifold which he said $350 in text so I made appointment & he attempted to install intake I had purchased online. Unfortunately we realized it was wrong part & had to order another after installed he raised his quote to $475 like it was my fault they sent me wrong part! I then tried contacting him numerous times before he said his schedule was booked for weeks before he could come back. I couldn't wait & decided to tackle job myself when I found missing bolts & rear heater core hose wasn't clamped at all which is why my driveway has large stain from coolant. Over the super cold winter, my Honda Hr-V had what I thought was electrical issues. Matt came out and diagnosed the car as just a bad battery. I found Matt on Yelp, and was a little skeptical at first, only because he had limited reviews and didn't seem very established. I called him and had him come out and look at my son's 2007 Toyota 4Runner, which needed some work before he could leave for Colorado to school in the fall. Matt came out and looked at the truck, and I could tell he knew his stuff. Long story short, we had Matt do a bunch of work on the truck (new front suspension, replaced power steering hoses, replaced transmission cooling lines, etc.), and he did excellent work!! He is honest (won't sell you something you don't need!), he not only doesn't mark up parts, he actually gave us his commercial discount on them! He was OK installing parts I bought somewhere else, and gave me excellent advice on problems he didn't actually fix!! Matt is a smart young man with a great sense of customer satisfaction and high service levels! Since we started working with him, he has partnered with another young guy in a shop in Wheeling, but he told me he will still be doing mobile service (which is what he did for us - he actually comes to you and repairs your car in your driveway or wherever!!!
