Don't go there unless you want poor customer service. Since last October, I took two cars to State Road. The first, a 2003 Cadillac Deville, I drove there for brake repair on Tuesday, October 3, 2023. I was told that they'd get to it in a couple of days. Meanwhile, I'm driving a rental for $100 a day. Thursday comes and, on my lunch break, I call to see if my car's been worked on. I'm told no, but that they'll check it out shortly. Another couple hours go by and I'm told that it needs over $2000 worth of work and that I have to sign a liability waiver. I said okay. The next day, I drop off the rental and get a ride to work from Devin, the shop owner's son. I'm told later that day that they refuse to work on my Cadillac as it's too much of a liability. The car gets towed away and I got $84 for it instead of the $150 that was initially quoted. I'm now driving a 2003 Nissan Maxima. When I first got it, I took it to State Road for an inspection. After checking it out, they gave me a thumbs up. Three weeks later, the "check engine" light came on. At first, I took it to another repair shop. They couldn't fix it, so I took it back to State Road. After a free diagnostic, I was charged $140 for a more thorough test. The problem was the engine idle was too high, something I already knew. I then paid $650 for a repair. Two days later, the light came back on again. I am told by their mechanic, Mark, that I need to keep bringing the car back for a check. All that's really been done is a code reset which any repair shop can do. It comes back on the next day. Last week, on December 19th, my car wouldn't start. I had it towed to State Road that evening. The next day, I called right when they opened to explain the problem. The service coordinator, Jim, said he'd put in a work order for it. Mid-day, I got a text reminding me about an appointment I set with them the following day. The text said it was for my Cadillac. I'm thinking, "wait. They've been working on my Nissan, so why does the text say "Cadillac"?" I then called State Road to ask what work's been done on my Nissan. They said nothing's been done, but they'll get back to me. I had to miss a day of work, and I'm in my apartment worried about how long it's going to take and how much it's going to cost. I got a call later from Mike who said it's the starter and that they had to order the part and they'll work on it tomorrow. He never gave me an estimate over the phone as to how much the repair would be. I explained to him that I had to work at 4:00 the next day. When the call ended, I said to myself, "I bet that I don't hear from them until 3:00 tomorrow." Sure enough, all day goes by, it's now 3:00, and I had to call them about my car. I spoke to Jim who said nothing's been done yet. At this point, I'm pretty frustrated. Jim gave the phone to Dominick, the shop's owner. He said to me, "Dave, we'll fix your f---ing car, but don't ever bring it here again. We don't want your business." Well, that's a no-brainer. It's like telling someone not to go into a building that's on fire because they might get burned. I wouldn't give that place any of my future business. After Dominick swore at me, that was the last straw. Prior to the starter problem, I'd already spent over $800 with them, so how is it that I'm not a priority? Now, after fixing my starter, I've spent over $1,000 there, and I'm still driving a car with a "check engine" light on. If you want a straightforward mechanic who keeps you up to date about when your car will be fixed and gives you an estimate beforehand, I would advise you to go elsewhere. Apparently, State Road likes to keep their customers in the dark and has no regard for the fact that they've already spent a significant amount with them. read more

After taking in my car i was told i would have it back the next day......that didn't happen. When i called 3 times and was told a would get call back they had told me that the car was not even touched yet.... Day 2- so now they have run a diag...this and this and this is broken i said OK fix it so they charge me labor that only a BMW dealership should and 4 days later i pay 650 dollars while on the second day of having my car back its broke down again...now I'm just pissed.! After taking a closer look at the receipt i find that all kinds of crap was done to my car that was not needed and unnecessary. STAY AWAY FROM THIS SHOP!!!! THEY ARE WORTHLESS!!!!!!!!!!!!! read more

At first, they seemed like a good place to have my car fixed. The owner, Dominic, and his father were friendly and treated me like family. We chatted while I waited, and they gave me a ride home a few times while my car was in for repair. Even his teenage son helped out by picking me up the last time, which was nice to see -- a true family owned business where everyone pitches in. However, that's where the good part ends, and frankly, although the friendly atmosphere was great, I don't go to mechanics for a friendly atmosphere -- I go to have my car correctly diagnosed, and fixed without hassles. I had self diagnosed my problem as a faulty thermostat valve. Firstly, the repairman suggested I get a transmission overhaul, because it wouldn't switch into overdrive -- as it turned out, that was BS, as I knew the problem was that the computer wasn't letting the car switch into overdrive because the engine wasn't getting up to optimal temperature (in the winter) because of the faulty thermostat. It was a very simple fix, and they fixed that, well enough, no complaints there. However, for this, the car was in the shop for more than 6 hours. The time quoted was 3. Then came another problem, which granted, wasn't their fault, but it speaks of incompetence: I had a hairline fracture in my radiator, which I did not know about. As soon as I drove the car away, there was coolant everywhere (before the repair, the car was not reaching operating temperature and the coolant never really boiled out of the fracture). Any respectable shop should, after a repair, run the car around the block to make sure it works properly, and if not that, at LEAST bring the car up to operating temperature just by idling it! Especially in the case of a new thermostat, where the complaint was that the engine was not getting hot enough! That's kind of sad. If they had done that, they would have noticed the other issue. But no, I drove away spraying coolant. I returned to the store the following day in order to have THAT fixed, which they quoted again, horribly incorrectly (time wise), I had to call out of work that evening because the car was not ready ('oversold' their slots to maximize profits? I don't know...). After that repair was done, I drove away again. Got home. Coolant leaks in multiple points. This time I took it to a different guy. The guy was actually surprised to see that the rubber hoses which come out of the radiator have been clamped down with the same old 15 year old rusty clamps they were originally clamped with! Yes, I'm talking about the push-on ones, not even the ones with the screw, but the ones that depend on elastic force! These are 25 cent pieces of standard equipment! They were clearly too old, but their 'mechanics' did not bother to just put two new clamps on the hoses. My new mechanic told me this was so cheap, and that it was just plain common courtesy to replace and use a new clamp after each time the hoses are taken off. So, because of that, the car went in a third time. AGAIN, they would have SEEN this if they brought the car up to operating temperature. Now I'm just sure they're overworking their mechanics for the sake of getting more clients in, and as soon as the repair is done, they drop the hood and start on the next over quoted job in queue. What should have happened is this: I go in for a thermostat repair, and am given a correct time for pickup. Once the replacement is done, they bring the car to operating temperature to see if the new thermostat is working correctly, and possibly take it for a short drive, upon which they surely will have seen the coolant fracture in the radiator. They call me on the phone, and state they have found a coolant fracture, and can quote me a repair bill for that. I agree to have it repaired, and to pick up the car the following day if necessary, as I understand it is a lengthy and unexpected repair. They keep the car overnight, and I pick it up the following day in working condition. I do not waste everybody's time to return to fix a tiny, shoddy, and easily avoidable mistake. Overall, did they fix the car? Yes. Was the price reasonable? Yes, it was in the ballpark. Was it top notch experience, and did they leave me confident in their abilities? Not really. I've since switched to the guys down the road "Auto Fix" on Rand and Dundee. I did some preventative maintenance type repairs, changed my oil with them a few times and absolutely no issues. They quote better than State Road, time wise, and do a good job inspecting their work when finished. read more

I'm sure their auto repair skills are just fine, but do not rent a Uhaul truck from them! Tried to say there was more gas in the truck then there was when I picked it up and said there was less gas then there was in the truck when I dropped it off. I put more gas in the truck then the contract recommended, I checked at the pump and when I dropped it off, I put the gas in that I used. They still tried to argue with me even after I went back and was looking at the gauge with an employee. Not sure why they are playing games like that. read more

Horrible place. They charged me about 3k to fix my car and they did not even fix it. They replaced parts that did NOT need to be replaced. After 3 weeks I had towed to dealer and the dealer figured it out in under 3 hours. I filed a claim with the BBB,Illinois Attorney General,and contacted the ASE Certification board. This place stold my money and didn't even offer any reimbursement for there errors. I would never go back and would never recommend them to anyone. 3000 is a lot of money to spend on something that could have been way less. 3 weeks they had the car, they just kept adding parts and increasing the bill. Everytime someone asks me about them I tell them what happened to me. This is not made up, this is really what they did to me. read more

I'm new in town and State Road was highly recommended by several people. I do most of my own vehicle repairs but I know when I'm occasionally in need of professional help. I've walked in the door twice and both times I was greeted like a regular. Once with my daughters car they helped diagnose a fairly simple issue for a fair price which I ultimately took of myself and the other I had them do a substantial repair on a second car I own at what I considered a very fair price. Both times I dropped the vehicle off and got a free ride home and pick up when the car was done along with some interesting conversation with the driver to boot.
