I cannot praise my experience here enough. My car brake warning lights flashed on when I was more than an hour from home. AAA towed my car here, so I'd never worked with MacLagan before. They were busy (always a sign of a good place) but gave me an accurate estimate on when they'd get to it. It turned out to be a malfunctioning sensor. He walked me through the options and possibilities, giving his recommendation. At a time when you're stressed out and far from home, it is wonderful to find an auto shop like this. Honest mechanic is not always an oxymoron! I found one when I really was in need. My old beater was leaking gas. I started finding a little puddle in the vicinity of my gas tank when I came out in the morning. Since I didn't have the bucks for a repair, I started just running on empty and putting $3 worth of gas at a time into the tank. I knew it was a bit dangerous, not to mention expensive! I was putting in my umpteenth $3 worth when I said, this is ridiculous. Right across the street from the gas station was a garage, so I thought, let me pull it in and at least get a diagnosis and find how how much it will be to fix. The garage was clean, the staff was friendly, and I talked to the owner whose name was Eric. He seemed like one of those salt-of-the-earth trustworthy kind of guys. He said he had bought the business some years ago and it was pretty much a family operation. He said to leave it and he would call when he had looked at it. I took the bus home and waited for the diagnosis. When I came back to look at the car, it was up on the lift. He showed me; one of the pipes leading to the gas tank was leaking. The pipes were all so rusty looking that they looked liked they would dissolve if you looked at them sideways. He said we could do this two ways, the right way or the cheap way. He said considering the condition of the car, the cheap way would be the way to go. He estimated about $150 and said he would call when they had it ready. It turned out around $200, but I was happy. I had a functioning car again. I had a good experience with this place. I felt lucky to find it just by serendipity! Everyone on the staff was a pleasure to work with, they did a good job at a fair price, they were kind on payment terms, hey what more can you ask? read more

Had to have my car towed due to a power steering problem and with not experience and few reviews of shops in the area I was in a cross my fingers and hope situation. I got very very lucky. MacLagan Auto Center picked the car up within 45 minutes and had it repaired in two days. Would have been sooner but a part was needed. Not only did they fix the problem but when I went to pick up the car I was given a list of other items that needed attention and a ranking of which should be done first, what was a priority, what to watch for etc. I will definitely be going back and recommend them to friends. read more

I love my car and I am picky about who works on it. I have found only great service from Maclagan's. I've been taking my car there for the past 4 yrs since I moved here from CA. I was referred to them by a friend. I have found the lead mechanic Brandon to be a master-mind of cars. And the owner has always been a man of his word. Being a woman, I don't like the all too often run-around at automotive repair shops. I brought my car here to have it checked out because my engine light came on. After they looked at my car the guy at the front desk told me he'd call my warranty company and order my part and he would give me a call the next morning to let me know when the part would be ready. I didn't here from him the next morning or the following day. So after two days I gave him a call back and he responded "I was going to do it, but then I got sidetracked". I didn't feel comfortable trusting someone with my car who didn't care enough to give a simple follow-up call. I ended up taking my car to somewhere else; MacLagan Auto just seemed very unproffessional to me. read more

We were visiting for our son's graduation from Navy boot camp when our van broke down and was towed to MacLagan Auto Center. This was was my second time visiting this shop and has a very very unpleasant experience. When I showed up and was at the front of the office no one was there to greet me and while I was standing waiting for a few minutes the mechanics at the shop could see me and plainly ignored me. I called the number for the place and the guy who answered the phone was very rude and unprofessional. He had no type of people training or customer service skills. I was hugely disappointed and felt insulted. I will never user their services again and do not recommend anyone else to do so either, specially when there's other shops around that can provide better service. I suggest you train your staff with better manners. read more

I recently started bringing my 2002 Highlander to to the MacLagan Auto Center after reading about local auto shop ratings. I had been a loyal customer at another shop in Gurnee. I had front brakes replaced last spring and a clanking sound started immediately after the repair. They tried to fix it but failed. Their reason was all brakes squeaked. MacLagan's diagnosed the problem and fixed it as they said they would in addition to replacing the timing belt, water pump and replacing the rear brakes. My truck runs great. The clank is gone and there are no squeaks. They delivered as promised. They have earned my business and I now have a new mechanic. Thanks to Tom for a great job. read more

Our AC quit in our Suburban last summer and MacLagans had it in and out in a couple of days working good as new. The owner and staff are very knowledgable and helpful. They always let us know if there is something going we didn't know about when we take it. We will be customers for life! read more
