Then he indicated our leach field may be saturated, even though there were none of the recognized systems of a failing system.

When I called Clay's, the reception told me that the team would be able to determine if I needed a pump when they came out. Anthony was friendly and patient and showed me how to clean the filter. He also pointed out some potential problems with my tank which I greatly appreciated. When I asked how full the tank was and if it needed pumping, he told me there was no way to know except by pumping. That was so strange, and I asked him to confirm several times. I did a quick search on my phone and it seemed like there were articles on how to measure the sludge depth (which is the critical thing to know). I showed him an article and he told me that he'd been doing this for 35 years and these methods don't work, they were just guessing. I gave him the ok and spent nearly a grand. After the pump he confirmed that the tank was likely pumped when we purchased the house a year and a half ago, meaning that the tank was not even half full. By this point, I had been able to fully read the article, and the method used to measure the sludge made sense, was easy, and declared to be reliable. I should have done the research first. I feel so taken advantage of. To determine if you need a pump you need to measure the sludge level. There are many good videos and guides online and it's very doable yourself, even for an incompetent like me. You need something to make a hole in the scum, a long stick and a long white cloth or tube sock.
