A happy family with our wonderful instructor, Kyle!

Kyle was our instructor, and he AND our experience was amazing! My daughter and my husband and I did a lesson together. I would request Kyle if you are looking for an unforgettable experience!!!

Staff was super friendly including our instructor. He coached us very well and pushed me and my partner to catch a wave every time! They take incredible photos of you and I really recommend trying them out if you're staying for a couple days!!

Maui wave riders is the best. Kyle is absolutely one of the most patient kind souls on this planet. Excellent instruction and equipment. My sons and I had a blast. If you're in Maui you HAVE to book lessons with MWR.

We enjoyed our group surfing lesson! There were 2 in our party but only 6 in the group, a good size and all of us were beginners. Location and parking were easy to find. The checkin process was simple and quick, I do recommend getting there 15min early to find your shoe and rash guard size (I sized down but had to try on a few to find the right fit). We attended the 845 class and definitely wouldn't want to be any later in the day because of the sun. Overall, everyone was very chill and friendly. We were both successful surfers and would do it again! Ps. They capture pictures while you're surfing as well, which we didn't know until getting there. We decided to do it since it was our first time and are so glad we have them!

Great time learning to surf. Instructor Waiola (spelling?) was great! Check-In was super easy, find a rash guard and booties was also easy. They provide a small locker for you to lock up small stuff. They stressed hydrating before we walked over to the van with all the boards. Nice cold filtered water to drink. Quick beach safety and surf lesson and into water. My wife and youngest son were not surfing and they provided them chairs for the beach. After was a "surf" shower, rinse rash guard and booties; they provide a basic surf certificate for fun. Great experience! Highly recommend and don't forget to tip your instructor

We had a semi private lesson booked at 8 am for the Lahaina location with Kyle and Kahala. We met the instructors at the beach. Our two sons, 18 & and 14, were to have their very first surf leasons! The instructor walked them through some techniques on land and prepared them for what to expect in the water. The amazing lady instructor, Kahala, guided the boys in the water on their boards. Her command of the water, and the boys was phenomenal! The boys were up on their boards and surfing small waves within the hour. Definitely money well spent with MWR! Would recommend 100%!

This was a highlight of our trip! Staff was very friendly and helpful for our group, myself (42) and three of our kids 18 YR, 16YR and 13YR. None of us had done anything like this before so we knew nothing. Our instructor Wai was absolutely fantastic (I'd highly recommend him), he did a great job teaching us the fundamentals and getting us all surfing. Great company with great employees that made it great from beginning to end!

"So glad I finally found you -- and so glad I didn't give up."…read more My last surf lesson in Maui was with Chyna, and it completely changed how I understood surfing. A little background about me: a middle-aged first time surfer, a basic swimmer and a big fan of basic snorkeling. Weekly workouts include gym weight lifting, kick boxing, yoga, and Lagree. And, I had a HUGE fear of wipeouts. Chyna and her friend Aina once ran a small water-sports business together, and they also volunteered teaching local kids to surf. They lost so much in the 2023 Lahaina fire, not to even mention that Aina is also a Maui firefighter. Thankfully, their families were safe. Knowing their story made Chyna's generosity, patience, and love for the ocean feel even more special. This was nothing like the two commercial surf lessons I had taken before: no photographer on shore, no rush to simply get me standing for a picture. In 2 hours, Chyna taught me how to respect and learn from the ocean: how to read the shoreline, reef and rocks, whitewater and green waves, wind, entry and exit points; how the board works; how to paddle, turn, control it, get through whitewater, and even use sound to judge an approaching wave. Most importantly, she corrected my popup technique and let ME decide whether to stand when each wave came. Once I stopped rushing and started learning the speed and timing of the wave, I was able to feel the freedom and pure energy from surfing. Even the whitewater that had scared me before stopped feeling intimidating: I didn't get knocked over ONCE! For the first time, I experienced what surfing can feel like when fear is no longer in control and I can actually listen to my body and the ocean. Chyna and Aina, I'm so grateful I found you. See you at the next wave!

From the initial communication and detailed information provided beforehand to the beautiful location and overall organization, everything was seamless and professional. Theo was an absolutely fantastic instructor. As a parent, I was nervous because my son had never surfed before, but Theo immediately put us at ease. He took the time to explain his approach, including why he wanted to start on smaller waves and ease my son into the experience rather than pushing too hard too fast. That thoughtful approach made all the difference. Theo was incredibly encouraging, motivating, and patient throughout the lesson. He paid close attention to my son's energy level and knew exactly when breaks were needed, which was especially important for a young child. He struck the perfect balance between building confidence and keeping the experience fun and positive. I was also extremely grateful for Theo's communication with us as parents. He kept us informed, answered our questions, and made us feel comfortable every step of the way. Overall, this was an outstanding experience, and I cannot recommend them enough!! If you're visiting and considering surf lessons, do it. In fact, I left wishing I had booked a lesson for myself as well! Thank you, Theo, for making my son's first surfing experience such a memorable and positive one.

We just wrapped up our third lesson with Bully today--my wife and I rode so many waves it was a blast, and Bully made sure my mother-in-law crushed it during her first time surfing as well. Unlike chaotic group lessons, Bully brings a 1:1 approach where I feel safe and empowered out on the water. I would not hesitate to say Bully's is the best surf school in the world, not just Maui. Bully is an incredible teacher who shares his passion for surfing and respect for the ocean. Bully and his team of coaches made us all feel confident and safe in the water. Our entire family caught waves, including not just the kids, but the out of shape older ones too! Bully and his entire team of coaches (shout-out to Theo, James, and Ashley) were positive throughout the entire lesson. The energy was infectious. It was easy to try when we knew every attempt would be met with joy. It was incredibly helpful that even with a group lesson, we each had our own surf coach; we could each learn at our own paces and our coaches were able to give us personalized instruction. The equipment was top-of-the-line and really helped novice surfers like ourselves. The boards were light and forgiving and much better than typical foam boards. We can't wait to come back to Maui to take more lessons with Bully and his team. We made memories today that will last a lifetime and learned lessons that will remain in our hearts and guide us through life's challenges. Just breathe.... Both of my kids can surf, but my wife and I have never attempted it until we met Nick and his lovely family. Communication was great, Nick is a *TRUE* local to Lana'i, and he took us to a spot that's a 45 min drive from Lana'i city to a remote beach on the north east end of the island. Nick had all of the equipment for us to try, and both my wife and I were able to get up with Nick's help. We really enjoyed our time with Nick and I would highly recommend this. They only reason I can't give this 5* is that it was a bit on the pricey side after seeing the cost of surf lessons on other islands, but we were anxious to surf and still had a great time!

That is where Nick came to the rescue! We hired him to take my husband and daughter surfing and it was the best thing we did our entire time on Lana'i. We rented a jeep for the day at the Four Seasons where we were staying, met Nick and Kawai in Lana'i City, then caravanned to the other side of the island to Lopa Beach. It's a trek on an unpaved road, but it is beautiful and gives you the opportunity to see the north side of Lana'i and its stunning views. Surfing: Lopa Beach was empty and we were the only ones there. Incredible! The waves were absolutely perfect for beginners and were consistent. So many waves to catch over and over again that landed on a soft, sandy beach. Nick and Kawai brought the right boards, rash guards, and booties and gave all the right instructions to get my husband and daughter up and surfing on practically every wave they tried to catch. It is clear that Nick is an expert on not just surfing, but specifically surfing on Lana'i. The added bonus was having Kawai there, as my daughter absolutely loves surfing with and getting some surf tips from female surfers. The history lesson: Beyond just surfing, Nick and Kawai are absolute gems to talk to about the history of Lana'i and all of Hawai'i. As natives of Hawai'i, they have an incredible amount of information on the history of everything that's ever happened there. It's wonderful to not just learn so much about the state we love to vacation in, but to find people so passionate about Hawai'i culture and its history. Please listen and learn from them, not just about surfing, but about all of Hawai'i. You will leave a better person and will find yourself feeling like you can truly hang out with Nick and Kawai in another life...that life where you move to Lana'i. ;) Do not hesitate -- book a lesson with them!

Came to Hawaii during the first week of April and the conditions were terrible! 2-3 ft barely in Waikiki and 2-3 ft in Lahaina, while everywhere else was a lake or blown out. Fortunately the lady and I found MSC who offered a great selection of rentals, storage, and outdoor shower! Lolo and a lovely woman (sorry I lost your name!) with an adorable pup set us up with a premium rental ($45) and a softie ($30). This came with rash guards, booties because of the coral, and a locker and a bin to leave our stuff. The shop is big and cozy with a bunch of items from snorkeling to SUP. Nice incense and Hawaiian/Tropical music playing around. Really set up the Aloha spirit and mood. Lolo gave us the lowdown and really explained everything about Lahaina Harbor (bunch of schools and long boards) and the Breakwall (consistent left and shortie friendly). Since I ride a 5'7" at home I wanted a board with maneuverability, but float - and given the sm0l waves I opted for a 6'10" 48L thruster. The lady was just learning so she got a 9'0" softie. Lahaina Harbor was perfect for the lady - especially with the sneak lessons she got from all the instructors. And Breakwall was a dream considering LA/OC has been terrible with the rain and storms (but thankful Cali has rain finally). Really enjoyed the long lefts and exploring the faces. And seeing my lady finally standing up on a board! Just be wary of the long paddle out! Came back to MSC and just had to place everything on the lawn outside. And the staff allowed us to leave our stuff in their bins while we explore. One of the best places we've visited so far and can't wait to come back when Lahaina is pumping.
