Ideally, it's probably better to know how to swim before you surf. It's also probably better to have a sense of balance before going anywhere near a surfboard. But if you're like me and have neither of these things-- DON'T LOSE HOPE!! Believe in urself girl, bc if I can surf and not die, YOU CAN TOO :') TBH I really owe it to our instructor Eddie for being so encouraging during the lesson & giving great feedback-- even though I was scared in the beginning, it ended up being waaAAAAAaaAAaaay less stressful than I expected. Within the first few waves, I was standing & cruising along just fine ^___^ Originally, our lesson was on 10 AM Saturday, but seeing the forecasted stormy weather, my friend and I called a few days ahead to ask if we could move it to Friday. Summer was incredibly understanding & rescheduled us without any extra fees. Arriving to the meetup location was no problem-- we saw their "Waves Hawaii" van in the parking lot immediately. Relatively easy to find parking in the same lot, but I can see it filling up quickly on weekends. First, we were fitted with leggings, shirts, and water shoes. Very comfortable & practical, since it does get chilly out in the ocean. Also, the area that Surf Yoga operates on isn't exactly a beach-- it's a rocky shore that has consistent (but gentle) waves that are great for surf novices like me. Since the ground consists of sharp volcanic rock, the water shoes are a must so you don't cut up your feet. We started off on dry land. Eddie gave a brief lesson on standing and appropriate falling techniques, and then we carried our boards out to surf! The next two hours was just our group practicing our surfing skills. Eddie helped everyone stabilize themselves on their boards & taught us tricks. Though we didn't learn exact timing for when to catch waves or how to paddle out ourselves, it was a really great intro to surfing in general. The surfer community seems very supportive & chill! As we practiced, other instructors/surfers even gave us tips & cheered us on (-: Afterwards, Johnny (the photographer) offered pictures of our surfing, which we gladly purchased. A bit pricy for a couple of college grads ($50 total for 40+ photos), but we couldn't resist commemorating our first time surfing! The photos turned out great! Surf Yoga Maui was by far the best part of my Maui trip. I was only planning on surfing for one day, but ended up coming back for multiple days. After booking, Summer was quick to respond with everything we needed to know about our lesson. She was personable, kind, and helpful in answering any questions we had. My 13 year old son and I had smiles on our face throughout the whole lesson. If you have ever parented 13 year old boys, you know there is no higher endorsement than making one smile for 2 hours. Eddie was very patient, positive and insightful as an instructor. I spent a couple seasons teaching skiing, and Eddie has that special blend of experience and the understanding of how to translate his knowledge of the movement of surfing into language that newbies to the sport can understand and put into action. Booking was easy. Apparently we signed up just 2 minutes before the system stopped taking reservations, but the follow-up communications were prompt and helpful in preparing ourselves. They were amazing from start to finish. Upon calling to set up our lessons, my girlfriend immediately befriended Summer, who throughout our trip responded to a myriad of random questions we had about everything from surfing, to 4th of July ideas and other excursions around the island. By the time we actually met her, it felt like we were already friends. We booked the private lessons with Eduardo. He was fantastic. He took time and went through all the mechanics with us beforehand (it was our first attempt at surfing) and made us feel comfortable before heading out. Both of us managed to get up rather quickly and instead of just being satisfied with that, he kept showing us new tricks and helped us refine our form. By the end of the lesson, we were both consistently riding the wave all the way in, and I even managed a few turns. When we got tired, and believe me, you'll get tired, Eduardo will even happily push or drag you along so that you can get a few extra waves in. Beyond the actual instruction, everyone at Surf Yoga Maui is really fun and interesting. You can tell they really love life and what they do. As an added bonus, Matias will come into the water during your lesson and take a whole mess of awesome pictures and will sell them to you at a good price. It's $25 a person. So in all we paid $50 for what must have been around 100 pictures. We spent the rest of our trip recommending them other couples we met on the island and now I'm singing their praises to the whole interwebs. We will be back. read more

Summer was very sweet on the phone and Eduardo was an incredible instructor. He had a teacher in training with him (Luke?) who was also very sweet and fantastic to learn from. I love how they have paired yoga with surfing - such a great idea. Eduardo was really good at teaching us specific lessons based on what we were doing, but kept it light and focused on having fun. I highly recommend Surf Yoga Maui! My friends and I visited Maui recently and decided to learn how to surf. What better place to learn than Maui, right?! I came across Surf Yoga Maui through great reviews on Yelp, so it's only fitting I also contribute to the great reviews :) When I contacted Surf Yoga Maui for surf lessons, I was in contact with Summer. She was amazingly accommodating for our group of 5. She was also very kind and courteous when answering my questions via email. (I love her!) We were scheduled for a lesson on 9/30, but rescheduled to 9/27 due to surf advisory. Thanks to their rescheduling, we had perfect waves to learn on! The day of our lesson, we were warmly welcomed by Tony and Eddie. They were so friendly I felt like we'd been friends forever lol. They were both so easy to talk to, very down to earth. They started off the lesson on land. Teaching us how to paddle and stand on our boards. They're great teachers! They didn't hesitate to correct our forms or answer any question. They made me feel comfortable on my board before heading out to the water. Now, none of us had surfed before, so we were a little nervous. But Tony and Eddie made us feel confident to tackle on the waves. Once we started giving the waves a try, Tony and Eddie gave each of us tips on how to improve our wave riding skills. Thanks to them, I was able to ride my first wave! My friends and I had 3 GoPros, so it got tricky trying to ride and film at the same time, but Eddie was amazing enough to help us film! They even had a GoPro mount on one of the boards!! I did not expect that. SO HELPFUL! We had such an amazing time!! There are many options for surf lessons on Maui but I feel that we found 'the one'. My partner and I were looking for both yoga & surfing on our visit so this combo package seemed like a great solution. We scheduled a yoga & surf combo with Summer (yoga) and Eduardo (surfing). 1hr ocean front vinyasa yoga practice with summer was followed by a 2 yr surf lesson with her husband, Eduardo. Both summer & Eduardo are both attentive and friendly whilst remaining highly professional. My partner had never surfed before (I had only done a little in the past) but we were both standing within a very short time. Taking a surf lesson can be quite intimidating but Eddie puts you at ease the moment you meet him. His experience and patience make him an incredible instructor for all levels. I saw more progression in one session with Eddie than in all of my previous lessons taken elsewhere. I'd highly recommend the 3-day progression package if you are trying to pick up surfing as a new hobby. I've gained confidence and skills that would've taken me years (if ever) to learn if I tried on my own. I had such a great experience that I came back 6 weeks later for more lessons! These guys completely exceeded my expectations. I've been surfing for 17 years and this was my wife's first time. Eduardo took me out on one of his surf safaris, which is a great way to get acquainted with Maui. Even if I spent hours on the internet and several more hours driving around, I don't think I would have found waves like we did. Not to mention the insights he was able to provide about the surf spot and to my actual surfing. Eduardo also took my wife out surfing for the first time. She was nervous ahead of time, but he made her feel completely at ease. Before long she was catching waves on her own and standing up consistently. She's gone from someone that was apprehensive about trying surfing to someone who is looking forward to going again. Great time! First time surfing (even though I live 3 miles from a beach in CA). The water is definitely warmer and easier to work with here in HI and our instructor Erin was amazing! She was very informative and made sure we had the process and stance down before going into the water. I couldn't believe it when I was standing and actually riding a wave! They provide rash guards, water shoes, and a board. The spot in the water was also with other beginner surfers, but there was still plenty of room. Only thing is the spot in the water was really rocky. You had to make sure to land on your feet or you'd get scraped or bruised up on the rocks so be careful! Erin informed us and reminded us throughout our lesson. I booked with Summer for our lesson and she was also very informative and kept in touch with me until we arrived. We originally booked with a group lesson, but it only ended up being my boyfriend and I which came out to be a sweet deal. Their photographer was also very nice and caught some awesome pics of us riding the waves -I just had to purchase for memories. read more

I made a last minute reservation and they were extremely responsive and very well organized I was able to set up a session with Eddie right away! My wife and I actually reside in Maui, but had never given stand-up paddleboarding (SUP'ing) a try before. Based on a recommendation of a friend who previous lived here, we signed up for the Surf Yoga Maui's combo SUP/Surfing lesson - and had an absolutely awesome time! From the start, Eduardo was incredibly understanding and patient. My wife is a little nervous around waves, but he made certain she felt completely comfortable - so much so, that by the end of the lesson she was surfing all sorts of waves and having a blast...I really couldn't believe it! While the surfing was an amazingly exciting rush, the paddleboarding was a little more mellow, but just stunning - clear waters, turtles swimming around us, and whales breaching in the distance. Talk about paradise on earth! Throughout the lesson Eduardo was great; providing us with helpful pointers, explaining the intricacies of the ocean and waves, and making sure we had an unforgettable time. He is truly a master of the water and an incredible teacher. Since our lesson with Surf Yoga Maui, we've been out on the water on our own many more times - but always fondly look back out our first lesson and everything we learned :) If you're visiting Maui, you have to try surfing and/or SUP'ing. We booked two days of yoga + surf combo to create a "mini progression" and had a fantastic experience with Summer and Eddie. It was definitely a highlight of our trip. The yoga class was done at a beautiful, secluded park right on the ocean with the sounds of waves and birds around us. Summer did a very good job tuning into our varying yoga abilities to customize the class around our needs and also prepping us for the surfing classes that followed. Fantastic! Kudos to Summer for totally hooking us up, being proactive about meeting times/places, and getting me psyched about the South Swell that came in during our stay in Maui. Eddie was a fantastic teacher! My wife has surfed once before, I grew up surfing on the East Coast but haven't paddled out in a while. Eddie was able to get my wife up & running quickly, literally pushing her at times into the break and guiding her on where to go/what to do. She was dropping into some big sets by the end of our session. He also gave me the VIP treatment, escorted me to the sweet spot in the lineup and made sure I had a good time. On top of that, you can easily see everyone respects Eddie and wants to surf with him, overall top notch & I highly recommend him! Finally, while we were out there, Matias took some pretty sweet photos of us, provided lots of enthusiasm & put together a CD of our pics. All in all, Summer + Eddie + Matias = a fantastic time surfing with a friendly crew who know the island well. Eddie is a really great instructor. I took the 3-day progression lesson, and I was able to go from not able to surf to surfing comfortably while looking back and around me on a 11-foot board by the end of the instruction. I think it helped that I snowboard, but I was still pretty happy about my progress. The pictures turned out great, too. They were $35 but well worth it read more

I can't say enough great things about Eduardo and Summer. They are a very unique couple that have sprinkled my vacation with such glitter and interest. Their encouragement and support was genuine and I will forever be grateful. I never thought I would have much fun surfing, I primarily was interested in yoga, but my boyfriend wanted to surf so I joined him in light of timing. Eduardo had us up on the boards in 10 minutes out there! Granted, I was falling off, but that's what learning is about! Eduardo is an excellent instructor who is patient, attentive, and determined to get you up on your board and having fun! The yoga classes perfectly compliment the surf lessons, keeping you from getting too sore, but, chances are you'll still be a little sore so you should really just splurge on the whole sha-bang and get the massage too! Great experience and would recommend Surf Yoga for all ages. We went at the beginning of October which was great cause there was apparently half the amount of students out on the water (so less people to worry about on the water) also me and my boyfriend were the only two per instructor which was a nice one-on-one experience. Our instructor was amazing and nice, we got up pretty much every time. The beach was great, not too big of waves for beginners and the rocks near the beach were not an issue at all. read more

I HIGHLY recommend Surf Yoga Maui to anyone looking to surf, SUP, or have a private yoga lesson! My husband and I booked a SUP/Surf lesson and had an amazing day! The SUP lesson was very fun, and Eduardo took his time to carefully describe how to stand / paddle, etc. We were lucky enough to see quite a few turtles and whales (it was whale season, mid-winter). When it came time to surf I was a bit nervous about being in the waves at first, but Eduardo put me at ease with his knowledge and understanding. I stood up on countless waves. We had so much fun the time just flew by! When it comes to yoga, Summer is an advanced practitioner with years of experience. She is able to work with people to develop a yoga session based on their individual needs. My boyfriend and I had an awesome lesson with Ed. He got us both to stand up right away, and we were able to quickly get better and better. This is such an ideal location with great waves for learning, and boards that are very forgiving! Paddling back out to catch more waves is also much easier than I remember. There's a guy who takes excellent photos sometimes and sells them for $25 a person (we were two people and paid $50), and they were well worth the price! He did a great job with my 6 year old and got him surfing right away!
