I've had a wonderful experience with Dr. Ruffy and his office staff. I met Dr. Ruffy a few months ago for problems related to equalizing my ears while scuba diving and flying in airplanes. He evaluated me and showed me the live video of what was going on inside my nasal cavities. He proposed 4 different treatment options; I could do any or all. He said many of his patients were scuba divers and pilots. That was reassuring. Gabby, his surgery scheduler has become a wonderful ally and advocate. I had my surgery yesterday. It went smoothly. Dr. Ruffy is excellent!!!! He treated my 92 yr old mother who has dementia with great care, and such respect, kindness and gentleness!!! He got the job done in a very short time to relief her ears of wax build up. She was so scared and he calmly spoke to her to relief her anxiety. I wanted to follow up on the grand ineptitude of this office. I had scheduled The Clarifix procedure and finally it looked like the procedure was going to happen. I had my final surgical consult 3 days before the procedure. I waited an hour for the doctor to see me and all he wanted to do was zip in and out. Hold on! I had requested local anesthesia (about a month before) He looked at me like I was insane. Ok, we'll do that. My assistant will go over pre surgery preparations. Dr. Mauro Ruffy, MD, is one of my wife's specialists. She was seen as a result of Vertigo a few years ago. She was diagnosed correctly and treated appropriately. Over a month ago, she developed a combination of symptoms not very quickly diagnosed: A combination of irregular blood pressure, thyroid stability, and sudden variations in body temperature. I got a nasal bone graft, nostril reinforcement, rhinoplasty, and septoplasty from Dr. Ruffy. I had no idea how my breathing was impacting my life until after the surgery. Breathing through your nose calms you down SO MUCH. I had no idea how miserable I was mouth breathing, because I was born this way (with a messed up nose.) I called to get my ears essentially cleaned due to wax build up. The person who answered got me in actually quickly due to a last minute cancellation. When I got there the receptionist was very nice and cordial. Finally when I saw Dr Ruffy he was great and got rid of the annoying wax build up. His whole staff are very accommodating. Poor office etiquette. I arrived for my scheduled appointment and after waiting for 45 minutes was told the Doctor was running " a little late". I asked to reschedule my appointment and was told " we will schedule you first thing in the morning" in a hope to avoid a similar issue. On the day of my next appointment I arrived on time and was escorted to a room for the normal pre visit evaluation. I sat in the exam room for over 30 min without an update. When Dr. Ruffy arrived he asked " How are you doing". I told him not well - I recounted my experiences in his office and that I would appreciate it if he demonstrated more respect for other people's time. Dr. Ruffy has been with me through some very crazy symptoms. I have two previous sinus surgeries by the time I saw him. I have had chronic pain since I was a child. He performed my third sinus surgery and my left side is perfect. He is still working diligently on my right side and recently performed an in office procedure which has really helped. I won't feel the full effects until late February but have been pleased this far. He's still trying to help me with my chronic issues even though he is not an expert in some of he suggested issues. He's referred me to Stanford and a rheumatologist. I'm hoping one day we'll figure it all out but I appreciate all his efforts. Dr.Mauro Ruffy, MD is the third doctor to try to give me relief from a deviated septum in my right nostril. Not only were his visits very helpful and informative, he explained everything he could do for me and how it would help my breathing. His staff is extraordinary. They always are smiling, helpful, and they go out of their way to make sure you are well taken care of. I had my surgery two weeks ago and I have had my first doctor appointment. Dr. Ruffy used a gel packing that was self dissolving. I have had wood splints with gauze, I have plastic splits with gauze, and now self dissolving gel with no splints. Self dissolving gel is the way to go. It is virtually pain free. There is nothing to pull out that has adhered to your nasal passages. I recently had a nose surgery to fix my deviated septum. Not only did Dr. Ruffy alleviate my breathing problems, he also made my nose look straighter than before. I had an open functional septorhinoplasty procedure performed by Dr Ruffy, at his recommendation, to correct a deviated septum. He lead me to believe that it would improve some sleeping difficulties that I have been dealing with, so I agreed to have it done. Now almost a year post-surgery my sleep has not improved, and it wasn't until after the surgery that he referred me to a pulmonologist and ordered a polysomnography study to further address the sleeping issues. However, the rhinoplasty portion also entailed cosmetic changes that he glossed over in my visits prior to the surgery, the results of which I do not find desirable. I agree with the other reviewers that he is an amiable doctor, and perhaps for the 5 star reviewers here surgery was the right solution. But if you are looking for a medical professional who won't propose surgery as a one-size-fits-all solution early in the treatment timeline, I would recommend at least consulting another doctor to save yourself some potential grief. read more

This doctor is really as good as it gets! Due to my 4 yr old having chronic ear infections, I was referred to Dr. Ruffy and boy did we win the lotto in all aspects of my experience with him! My daughter ended up having a frenuloplasty procedure as well as her adenoids removed. Although it is a fairly common and quick procedure, the worries of a mother never subside. Not only was the office staff friendly, but more importantly on top of everything. Personally, if I had to choose friendly versus professional, I'd opt for not so friendly if the office meant business, but I was pleasantly surprised that they all exceeded my expectations and accommodated both genres. Not once did I have to worry about follow up on my own because Priscilla was already a step ahead of me in making sure everything ran smoothly. From scheduling to blood work follow up, I have one word-AMAZING. Dr. Ruffy is a knowledgeable, kind doctor that is willing to take the extra step in explaining every aspect of the process so that you are comfortable with whatever course of action you decide to take. He is also honest and being a brutally honest type of person, respect and love that so much. He explained that the procedure may NOT correct everything about my concerns with my daughter, but it still would be more beneficial then simply not having the surgery at all. Even post surgery, I not only received a call from the outpatient surgery center, but his nurse from the local office. Just tried to make an appointment. Like the 1 star rating says "Methinks not." The office hours say they open at 8, but if you call you just wait endlessly on hold. When I pressed to leave a message (after 10 mins of waiting), they say they don't open until 9. Glad I didn't keep holding! The girl that called me back made me extremely uncomfortable/feel awkward and I had to repeat myself several times. Maybe its too early in the morning? Eventually she says the doctors first appointment (to give me a 2nd opinion) isn't for 45 days. Guess the doctors lucky if she's that busy but i'll never know. I've been a patient since about 2009 when I broke my nose in a mosh pit. He made sure it was going to heal straight and then discussed future issues with my deviated septum. I ignored it. I've been back a few times to get my ears cleaned. Then, it finally happened. I couldn't breathe well nor smell at all well. So the time came to get my septum repaired. And I did. It was easy all things considered. One week of discomfort and now I can breathe and smell much better. This doctor saved my life. For 9 months I suffered with a sinus infection. I want to three doctors, but it wasn't any good, as each one had a different opinion. OK, this is directed at office staff solely. I visited Dr. Ruffy 2 years ago and had a good experience - which is why I contacted him this morning, as I am dealing with a situation that needs prompt attention and was hoping he could see me in the next couple days. Things started well enough when the person I was speaking with told me he was not doing clinic hours today or tomorrow - I asked if he could see me later this week, restating I think this needs attention sooner than later. After checking my file she returns to tell me since I have not seen him in about 2 years, before they can do anything I need to come in for a consult visit. And, they have time to see me for that in May. Really? When I restated the situation, symptoms, etc. and said waiting until May really wasn't an option, she said "well, then you can go to urgent care." This she says to an existing patient seeking help. Hmmmm.....Not real impressed. read more

When I was diagnosed with sleep apnea my sleep doctor recommended me to see an ENT physician to follow up. I got stuck with Dr. Ruffy due to my HMO plan but long story short he inserted a long device into my nose which I had thought was routine but apparently was actually a surgery procedure! So my HMO did not approve and they billed me $500 out of pocket for it. I couldn't believe it. Dr. Ruffy should have explained to me that although he may not be up to speed with insurance details, that a procedure like that would POSSIBLY have insurance implications - I would have simply held off and researched it ahead of time with my insurance had I known. To top it off, he made his own conclusion that I did not have sleep apnea and disagreed with my previous sleep specialist physician stating in his opinion, that I did not have sleep apnea - just a smaller than average throat. I eventually got referred to the Stanford sleep clinic and their doctors agreed with my first doctor that I had sleep apnea all along. Their comment about Dr. Ruffy was telling enough for me, "he shouldn't have diagnosed you as to not have sleep apnea. If you snore, you have sleep apnea. It's a slam dunk. It's as simple as that quite frankly." A very telling statement. read more

I found him cordial and informative, and never in a hurry to get to the next number in line until all questions were fully answered and understood. I was referred to Dr. Ruffy from my primary care dr. I was having a rough time with allergies symptoms. On the first appointment he "scoped" me and low and behold I had pretty bad polyps' and a deviated septum. Dr. Ruffy had me go in for an MRI to confirm his findings and about 4 weeks later I had the polyps removed. The surgery went smooth and all my questions were answered before and after in a way that I could understand. I like that Dr. Ruffy has a good sense of humor, he is very down to earth and is super skilled surgeon. His nurse Dora is very sweet and knowledgeable and I felt very confident receiving information from her. I will be going back for my second surgery sometime this year and I have no worries since I know I have one of the best ENT surgeons in the Bay Area. read more
