I have been a customer with this Mavis since I moved to Carmel 16 years ago. The service is always honest and on time.

These people are crooks! My son went there for an inspection. Simple, right? They attempted to bill him $504.00. They claimed he needed a new battery and a brake fluid flush in order to pass the inspection. Huh?? Well, the battery was nearly new, so we certainly did not need a new battery, but my son is new at this and didn't get a hold of me in time, so before I was able to chime in, they put in a new battery for about $225. But get this---they charged him an additional $80.00 for labor to install the battery that they sold him!!! I have been around the block six or seven times, and I have NEVER heard of this. Outright rip-off. I told him to tell them to take out the battery and forget the whole thing. As you may have guessed, yep, they told him it would be another $80.00 in labor to remove it. Are you F*&^ing kidding me??? As for the brake fluid, well, we had just had that done, too, along with new pads and rotors. So . . . we were able to get our car out of there before they go to that. Bottom line: our mandatory $20 inspection sticker cost us $350. Nice. Bastards. NEVER USE THIS PLACE. IT'S A CLIP JOINT. I have written letters to the BBB, The New York State Consumer Protection Bureau, and the Bureau of Consumer and Facility Services and the Department of Motor Vehicles. I have also filed a dispute with my credit card company. I see that Mavis responded. So, here's my response to them: Let's see . . . you ruined a day with, and for, my son. You taught him that auto repair shops are not to be trusted nor respected. You took complete advantage of him, because you knew the car was not his, and he's only 18, so an easy mark, right? And, we're now out of pocket $230 for a battery we didn't need and $80 for labor that shouldn't have been charged. Not to mention that at $110 an hour you charged me for 45 minutes for a job that took ten minutes. Nice. You should be ashamed of yourselves. So, you ask what you can do to fix this? Write a letter of apology to my son, and refund the amount charged for labor. Then, issue an RMA and we will return the battery. That's what you can do to help. And, if you do all of that, I will edit my review so that it reflects your good business sense. read more

I booked a last minute oil change today and had my 1.5 year old with me. The staff was incredibly friendly, put cartoons on for my little one, and immediately handed me toys as I sat down. Had an appointment to have an inspection done on a Subaru Outback. The appointment making process was easy and the car was taken as soon as my wife arrived. I received a call over an hour later from one of the employees, stating that her car had failed the inspection. According to him, her tires were "low", with me being asked if I wanted to "address that" today. The tires were measured at 4/32" and 5/32" respectively by me that morning with even wear on each tire (two were newer) and the state requires 2/32" to pass inspection. He also stated that the front brakes were "low" as well, however when I pulled them apart to check after, the pads measured 5mm each. He asked me if I wanted to "address" those as well, for a neat ~$650. The next comment was about her suspension. He claimed that because the tires were "so worn", it must be bad. Therefore it would also fail the inspection and should be replaced. He offered to replace the front suspension, but did not give a price. On inspection at home after, the struts were intact with no sign of damage or leaking and no abnormal noises on articulation and the coils were intact without excessive rust. Lastly, and the only thing he said that was accurate, was that the left rear brake light was out - which had gone out on the way to the shop. As a side note, the vehicle was also at a Subaru dealership within the last week to have a code cleared after replacement of a steering angle sensor. It received a full inspection there as well, passing every field, though they weren't able to do the state inspection as they were located in CT. This experience was a disgrace to mechanics everywhere. Avoid it like the plague. read more

I really don't understand why some of my family members keep going here. They ALWAYS have a problem. I gave up on them YEARS ago. Today it was my son in law who got burned. He went for an inspection, they gave him the usual song and dance of finding things he "needs" (they ALWAYS will). He foolishly agreed, and in addition asked them to put new wiper blades on. They charged him $130 for the blades!! What are they smoking?? He told them to take them off and they refused, stating they had already charged his credit card for them! Now, he has joined my ranks (as now the rest of my family has) and will NEVER return to them for ANYTHING. He will not take this lying down though. He is disputing the credit card charge and calling corporate. STAY FAR AWAY FROM THEM!! read more

I want to know if the reviews posted are for Mavis as a whole or by the certain location. I go to the Carmel location and Cecil and Steve and even one of the mechanics Rob are great and they show me the issue or problem by bringing me into the bay to she for myself. Only once I asked to be shown. I am female and unlike what most businesses think .... Usual stereotypes etc I happen to have a lot of vehicle knowledge. Maybe it's why they don't f with me. Mavis has a new telephone reservation scam where they charge a $25 deposit to make an appointment by phone. They get your credit card, claim it didn't go through and then charge the card again, which shockingly also doesn't go through. They promise on the phone to take care of it before you show up to have the work done. After the work is done and you pay your bill in full at the store, the charges for the deposit suddenly go through. The store tells you they can't help you and you have to call customer service. Customer service tells you they'll look into it and nothing happens. This has been going for several days. Complete scam. Brianna and the store manager Dylan acknowledge the problem but refuse to help, citing that "the money has to come from corporate." Funny because I paid at the store with my credit card. Marjorie and Dawn in customer service at corporate promised a refund that didn't materialize. I am owed $50. My invoice number is 00724853. I have reported them to the BBB. I will dispute the charge with AMEX but it's a complete hassle. As for the work that was done, when I picked up my car, the tires had varying degrees of air in them. Two of the tires were 5-10lbs lower than the others. I literally put air in my tires in the Mavis parking lot because their people didn't do it right. And after spending $100 for an alignment, the car pulls to the left. I don't know if these are corporate stores or franchises but this company is bad. I would pay extra to have a better experience and avoid hassles like these. read more

I came in and they said it would fail because they "Found" the brakes pads disks calipers etc were all bad. I drove the car there they were fine. Wasted an afternoon waiting for a simple inspection. I made my appointment online a day in advance. It was confirmed the day of. I Had to pull my car and leave in order to be on time fork work, after wasting my whole afternoon sitting in their waiting room & wandering the premises. I was told the 'only inspector' got pulled onto a brake job- a job that was clearly more profitable than my mandated state inspection. Frustrated & no inspection. read more

I arrived 10 minutes early and I was initially told they can't take me. Then they explained it's not an appointment, it's only a reservation and I'd have to wait up to 3 hours. This may have been the most pathetic attempt at customer service. My car had a flat tire (front left) and I called Saturday to see if they could change the front 2 tires. The person informed me to drop it off later that day and pick it up Sunday. I dropped it off and let them know which tires I needed and I even asked if they could do the alignment. They gave me the price and all was good. I come back Sunday, pay them and then drive my car 8 mins home. Monday I'm driving to work, and I get a notice on my dashboard that says "Service Tire Pressure System". My front left tire could not be detected by my car and I also noticed the front tires were slightly over inflated. I call back later that and the man asks me to bring my car in later so they could look. I told him I would be there around 5pm and he said that is fine since they leave at 6pm. I get there around 5pm and they tell me to come back tomorrow. I agree and come back the next morning to let them know what is going on. I get there Tuesday morning and they said they'll take a look at it, so I left the car with them. I get a call from them later letting me know they're not sure but their sensor is showing the tires & PSI are fine. I arrive later that day and one of them bring their sensor tool and is explaining that the tires are fine, their tool is detecting the right PSI for each tires etc. He said it could be something with the computer in the car. I took my car to the dealership over an hour away to see if maybe they knew what it could be. It turns out, they had broken the sensor on my front left wheel when they changed the tire. When I dropped my car off it didn't have a check engine, tire pressure, low battery light on or anything. But now I need a new sensor and fix the TPMS. The worst of all, is that they didn't hold themselves accountable for their mistake and and instead blamed it on the car computer. On top of that the alignment was still off when the dealership received the car. They also try to force a 10/10 rating on you. Please do not waste your time with this store. read more

Fiancé dropped his car off at 12pm for a tire change an alignment. 1 oclock he gets a phone call saying he needs things replaced, he says no thank you just the initial issues he went there for. The guy said it would be done within the hour. 2:30 rolls around and no one's called so we go there. The man who said he was the manager the day before claims now not to be the manager and my finances car is next up. We see the car come off the alignment machine and then watched 3 OTHER CARS go on before ours. The "manager" doesn't apologize or take accountability for anything just makes excuses and basically keeps lying. Only 2/3 employees are actually working and seem like good hard working employees that should take their good work ethics elsewhere. About 5 other employees did not touch a car in the 2 hours we sat there watching the bays. It's now 4:30 almost and our car is still not done and they close at 5pm. Hopefully we get our car. Save yourself the trouble and go somewhere else. This place is awful. I scheduled an appointment online to get an inspection done on a Sunday. When I arrived I was told that they don't have an inspector there on Sundays so they couldn't do it. The man behind the front desk explained that there was an issue with their system that allowed me to book the appointment even though there would be no one there to do it. He showed me the computer screen to illustrate his point, where you could clearly see a list of all their appointments and the reasons for them. They were well aware that this is an issue yet no one even took 30 seconds to check. I understand if the place is busy but it was dead. This was not the end of the world so I asked about rescheduling. I was told they had time during the week but I work so I asked what the earliest time they could do was. The man said come in on Tuesday at 8 am and you'll be the first one in. On Tuesday I pull into the parking lot and see employees arriving. I walk through the door at 8 am sharp and there are somehow two other customers already inside. This shouldn't be a problem as I have an appointment right? WRONG. Appointments literally mean nothing to them. They deal with customers on a "first come first serve basis" which makes zero sense. What the hell is the point of making an appointment then? I begin waiting, after a half hour my car is still outside untouched, I was expecting to be out of there at this point so I ask how long it's gonna be and I'm told that I'm gonna be the next in. 30 minutes after that they finally move my car in and start the inspection. I'm standing outside watching it happen and the inspector looks at my car for 5 minutes then goes to another car works on that one for a few minutes and continues going back and forth between different cars instead of just finishing the one he started?!? After ANOTHER 30 minutes of this a different worker tells me my car isn't going to pass the inspection and explains why. I'm told I will still have to pay, which is no problem. At that point I just wanted to leave as I was late for work. So I go inside to pay and they tell me I can't pay yet because its not done. I was literally just told it wouldn't pass so what else is there to do? They said even though it was going to fail they still needed to finish scanning the car. Finally after two hours I got out of there. This place is mess and has no respect for anyone's time. Awful experience. I will never be going back again. UPDATE: Took my car to a different shop today passed inspection with no issues. Once again this place is a joke. read more

Service technician at the front has no concept of time for repairs. Had me wait around all day for a tire patch, telling me it won't take long. I was next car up. Hours later I walk back to the shop to check on my car, still hasn't been touched. Tells me it'll be hours from now until it's done. Absolute waste of my day and time. read more

Left my daughters car with them for an inspection they left the brake up with out telling us like idiots and my daughter drove home like that. I understand that this is common sense but they left the brake on without telling us and now could've damaged the brakes. I will continually leave bad reviews until I am acknowledged for this error: why would you leave the E brake on flat ground: you destroyed my daughter's car for an inspection. This location should be closed. I made an on-line reservation for a state inspection at 11AM on June 29, 2014. I received an on-line acknowledgement that the reservation was confirmed for the date and time. My wife took time out from her day to follow me to Mavis and return me home while the inspection took place. The Mavis cashier acknowledged that I had an 11AM reservation for an inspection but that there was nobody available to do the inspection. When I asked when I could next get the car inspected, he told me next Friday (7/5/24), six days later. When I returned home, I checked my e-mail and there was no notice from Mavis that the appointment was cancelled, although Mavis has sent me advertisements on a July 4th sale. I got new tires a few months ago from Mavis. Then Dec.1 my TP light came in. I got an appointment 12/3/22 but when I got there they had no appointment setup for me. They took my car in and said it would take an hour well it took longer and told me there was a nail in the tire and then did alignment on the tire. The other day now the light came on TPMS called Mavis and told me to come down but it would take a few hours. I decided not to go today since it will take too long. I am just frustrated that I have to keep coming back. I should not be having this problem with new tires. Probably go tomorrow morning or afternoon. Need to get this resolved. read more

I had an appointment for an inspection at 9 am. I waited over 2 hours and the car wasn't even in the garage yet. I was told it would be another 30 minutes so I left. 2 and a half hours isn't a reasonable amount of time to wait especially when you have an appointment. Hire more techs who can do inspections or don't take the appointments. I see from other reviews that my experience isn't unique. Do better for your customers, Mavis. read more

In November of 2019, I brought my car in because of a leak in the front right tire. They told me I needed all new tires and charged me for a "complimentary" steering fluid change. After being charged for the "complimentary" change and the new tires totaling $900, the guy that helped us called asking for the payment at 8PM because he wanted to make his commission that night. It's now January, and I'm having the SAME leak with my tire. We brought the car in at 10am, they call and say it's ready at 1pm. I go to pick it up and the mechanic said he found a nail in the wrong tire AND he did not even CHECK the tire I was asking about. It's now 4PM and they diagnosed my car with a $90 leak that could have been fixed before new tires were even in question. On the upside, they charged us half price and apologized. read more

Lots of white shirts (managers) around, but not enough blue shirts (mechanics). Prepare to wait four to five hours before your car even goes on a lift. Extremely understaffed location. And there's always at least two or three aggravated customers in the lobby staring into the shop wondering why work on their car hasn't started in four hours. This town desperately needs another tire shop. Even with mediocre service they would make a killing. They got me out of there in five hours to replace one tire and do an alignment. They knocked off about 10% due to the wait time, so at least they made the effort. read more

How do you let people make appointments and not remotely stay true to appointed time? Hard working people make appointments around their busy schedule, work times, childcare etc. These people have zero respect or care for their customers time. They snarkily told my husband when he asked when his car would be going in after an hour had passed since appointed time that they "weren't a quick lube sir and an appointment is just a guarantee it will get done at some point today" Have you ever heard of such a thing? If that is their policy they should let their customers know upon booking so they can plan their day accordingly. Sitting for 3 plus hours in an uncomfortable tiny waiting area to get ONE tire changed is just how someone wants to spend their Tuesday morning. Simply unacceptable. read more

Two front tires, part of a 4-tire purchase at Mavis (Carmel, NY), began to show premature wear following a recent repair and realignment also performed at Mavis. The tires had (approx) 9,000 miles on them at the time I approached Mavis about the issue. The tires had (approx) 1,200 miles on them since the repair/alignment. I mentioned to the store manager the wear pattern was attributable to misalignment not age nor abuse. I asked how he'd like to handle the issue of tire replacement. Given the thousands of dollars spent at this store plus the evidence of the alignment issue, I was expecting (at worst) a heavily discounted purchase (for 2 replacement tires). The mgr reduced the price by ~35% ($75 purchase price vs $116 retail). I paid for labor to mount/balance/etc. To compound matters I asked SEVERAL times for the work to be done by a certain time in order to coordinate a ride to pickup the car. It was not ready at the requested time and I did not receive a call, promised by Mavis, when the work was completed. I had to do all of the follow-up - POOR communication. Given the issue with the (previous) alignment, I assumed I'd be given a print out of today's alignment work. The technician advised me to request that ahead of time next time I come in! Whoa! I've been buying tires since 1973.... alignment reports have always been given to customers. I'm very disappointed...as I've usually received good service at this store. This experience borders on improper business practice. They REALLY MISSED THE MARK this time.... read more

Ok so what a scam. This place takes advantage of women. Wife went in for inspection was told needed new wipers and rear breaks. She was told 450 for the brakes and 30 for wipers. Called me, and I was wondering because I must have purchased the worst rainX wipers in September 2023 and installed them. [only lasted 4 months my ass]. Now the breaks were another joke they are fine. [On reported indicated removed front passenger tire . makes me laugh . So I told my wife to take the car out and forget about it. They now informed her she would pass the inspection with the brakes, but definitely needed wipers. So being held hostage with an expired inspection 3hrs. She paid the thirty dollars for the wipers and 21 for the inspection fee. She was dealing with Robert and Dylan. The car actually has sensors that will alert you when you need new brake pads. It appears this place likes to do up charges when you come in for a silly nys inspection. read more

DO NOT USE THIS STORE, if I knew how to give them less than 1 star I would! I was very clear about not wanting all the extra things the guy over there was trying to sell me. I was there for tires, air in those tires, and those tires to be put back on my car. However, extra work was performed that I clearly said no to having done. WORSE THAN THAT, I dropped my car off at 8:00 AM and the tires arrived two days prior, so I know they were there. The manager called me two times during the day to continue to push new shocks and other things on me. When I said no again and again he was very nasty and I didn't hear from him or the shop again. I had to call back to follow up right before closing and they said it was just finished. GUESS WHAT? The extra work I asked them not to perform, was all performed! AND the manager of course was gone for the day when I questioned the bill and extra work they performed. He clearly made sure he was not there when I came to pick up my car. And of course, in order to leave with my car I had to pay for the extra work they performed against my wishes. BEST PART... I called the regional manager and he said he would reimburse me for all the work they did against my wishes. He said the check would be in the mail within 10 business days, that was over two months ago and not a darn thing has shown up. I told him I would not even consider giving this location another chance, but was willing to check out the Mahopac location, so he offered me a credit at any of the other stores in the area. When I called to order a tire for my other vehicle and tried to use the code he gave me for $50 (I think), the store told me the code was invalid. I'm not surprised with the store managers actions, I'm not sure if he gets a commission or just gets a bonus if the stores numbers are good, but he has done that before. I am very surprised by the regional manager I spoke to who said he would make it right and flat out lied. I'm a disabled US Army Combat Veteran, a fact that is clearly stated on my license plates. I am not easily duped, but if they will do this to me, I can only imagine how he would've treated my wife, or someone else who is afraid of confrontation. I am not afraid of confrontation, DO NOT USE THIS LOCATION. If they'll do this to me, they'll do it to anyone. What goes around comes around. read more

We brought our car to mavis to have the brakes replaced..... there is a special tool to take the wheels off.... they broke the tool never telling us they did and said someone broke the tool so we can't get your wheels off.... we never used the tool They said to come pick up your car and bring it to the dealership..... we said if we bring you a new tool would you do the work they said they wouldn't work on our car... it's a BMW which they had one BMW on the rack with the wheels off... 2 days with no car. Thanks Mavis..... we have been coming to this location for years so now we will have to find another place to go.... so sad you just lost a customer.... read more

Charlie lied to me twice, once when I purchased a set of tires. He told me my tires were done which I knew was a lie, but I decided that a new set of tires would be nice so I let him slide. For the second time, I stopped in for an inspection. Not only he falsely claimed that two of my calipers were "shot," only to change it to, "one of them is completely shot," claiming parts would cost 600 apiece, trying to sell me a 1700 dollars service. Upon hearing him saying "I'm just trying to help you out," I decided I was done. I took to another mechanic and found out, not only neither of them was "shot" as Charlie claimed, my car was in the condition to pass the inspection. Dishonesty is a bad business. read more

Pleasantly surprised by this location for taking my husbands car in last minute and on a Sunday at that. Thankfully tires were readily available same day and with an awesome rebate. I rarely leave reviews, especially bad ones, but this is necessary. I have been coming to this Mavis for years. Mostly for state inspection, tires, oil change. When I called to make the reservation, I said, "last time I waited for way too long, if this will be the case, let me know and I will come in another time." I was assured it would be in the three hour window. I make the reservation, get a confirmation email. Then I get a phone call asking what time I want to come in. I said that I made it x time with x person. The fellow on the phone said he wasn't informed of the time. That should have been my first hint. Next day I arrive 15 minutes "early," but the one person checking people in takes a half hour to check the guy out before me. After being checked in and my reminding the person that they promise three hours, I leave. Two hours later I see my car where I left it so I go back. In the mean time three WOMEN came in. Two were bringing their cars BACK because something didn't work after their appointment and the third was waiting for her car that she brought in a half hour before me. Interestingly there were no men waiting for their cars and I was the only woman there during drop off with many men dropping off Cutting to the chase. Almost five hours later I got my car. And I had to basically demand (in a nice way) that I need it now! Oh I got a $20 discount and the offer of a cookie for my troubles Mavis needs to review this franchise.
