We only discovered Mawby thanks to a recommendation from Shady Lane and wow, am I glad we did! Out of all the wineries we visited, this one easily landed in our top two. If you enjoy bubbly wine, this is an absolute must. Whether you like it dry or sweet, they've got something that will hit the spot. One of the coolest touches is that they seat you with a complimentary tasting of their house wine, such a welcoming way to start the experience. This was an amazing find. We had been to two other wineries today but this was the best. We ordered a flight of wines each. She had the blush. Tropic. Grace and Sex. Our favorite was Grace but Sex was a good second choice. Our second flight was Ombré. Us. Wild. Redd Us and Redd were about a tie, both were very good. Wild, not so much. The best part of this tasting is that these were the best wines we tasted today. None of the other wineries compared. We found out that Grace was a gold medal wine. That was our favorite even before we found out it was awarded. We bought a bottle of Grace and a bottle of Sex as we left the winery. read more

Mawby Winery was so special! We got this recommendation from a couple of friends and had to check it out!! Hands down the best sparkling wine from the Midwest. I love their méthode champenoise sparking wines the best but their Cuves were also delicious! I loved the wine knowledge of all the staff and talking to them about sparkling wines locally and abroad. Everyone was so nice and friendly! If we didn't have our dog with us, my husband and I would have been inside doing tastings and talking with the staff more! This winery is dog friendly but you have to sit outdoors. Wine by the glass is allowed in those areas. Tastings are indoors only. The property is gorgeous! You won't go wrong sitting in either area! We first visited Mawby many years ago, maybe 15-20, and it never ever disappoints. Staff is friendly & helpful. It always feels like a party, with a capital P. The winery is casual, comfortable & has a beautiful vineyard view We've been wine club members for close to ten years & it's one of our favorite places on the beautiful Leelanau Peninsula. This is not a bad winery by any means but unfortunately was my least favorite of our trip. Take that with a grain of salt - I prefer sweet wines, although I do like sparkling wines. I had the "Sweet" wine tasting flight and my future SIL had the more dry flight. I liked the Detroit sparkling wine, which was my first taste in the flight, but the others were a bit dry for me. Mawby is known for "Sex," another of its wines, but I thought that one was just okay too. Do make a reservation if you want a table - We originally had one for 5:45 p.m. today but we were able to change it to 3:15 p.m. since we wanted to get there earlier in the day. I also thought wait service was friendly but a bit slow. We ordered some charcuterie type stuff, and the honey goat cheese was actually a hot honey goat cheese, which wasn't specified - It was delicious but I can't do too much spice. One of the first stops on our wine tour. Mawby had a lovely outdoor seating area. We were greeted as reservations were highly recommended. We did not have them, but were able to get a table outdoors but only for an hour. We were given a complementary taste of their house wine, one that you can only get there. Our hostess was great. Still simply the best. Loved every sip and every moment visiting. We had our pups with us and they were able to accommodate us by sitting at picnic tables near the vineyards. This meant we weren't able to do the traditional tasting since they can't carry them down from the tasting premises but since we had a group it was fine. We split a container of the delicious whitefish spread and crackers and enjoyed a couple of glasses of wine each. My little cousin, not yet a drinker, was able to enjoy some chips and a lemonade. Visited 07/22/2020 to their tasting room. Reservations, and masks are required. Reservations are super easy on their website. Our visit was on a Thursday afternoon. We sat on their patio overlooking the landscape, in the shade. The day was perfect. We started with a glass, then chose a flight each with the charcuterie plate. The charcuterie is prepackaged and a perfect snack for two people. Our server was so sweet and absolutely excellent. The owner stopped by to say hello and I was able to get his card, to hopefully convince our local watering hole to put a keg of sparkling on tap. While sitting at the table, we signed up for the Fizz club. No cost, no obligation and discount given for our food and flights. Your reservation gives you about 50 minutes at your table. It was plenty of time. We asked our server for a case of Green, bottle of Bright and bottle of Redd. Green is my favorite, hands down. I have always wanted to come to this vineyard and so happy we finally did, even with the shut down. There is staff in the parking lot to direct you after you check in and their precautions are on pointe. Excellent. Can't wait to go back again. read more

1 star for transparency at the host desk, 5 star for the bubbles! We walked in on a Friday afternoon and was told they wouldn't be able to seat us because we don't have a reservation and to come back in 45min or so and he would write my name down and try to get us in so he said to go next door and check out the big little winery. He gave us one free glass of wine coupon. I walked out and went next door and was greeted with a complimentary sample of mixtape. I went to order a glass of rose and showed my coupon. I then went to get change for a 20$ bill for tip and she said I owe 10$ and some change. She said the coupon was for the free sample in which I come to find out they give everyone free samples so that coupon was not even worth anything. Anyway I looked online just curious when the next opening for a reservation would be at MAWBY and it was showing availability every 15 minutes from that time on so I booked a 3:30 (15 minutes later) and we walked back in and one of the waitress sat us and the host looked flabbergasted and was probably horrified because he told us they were fully booked and the room was packed! It wasn't even half full and we got sat right away. If this is an understaffing issue then just say that and we would be understanding. The host then went on to come up to us and say how it might be a while for someone to come take care of us. I'm not sure what that host had against us but we were greeted right away and had great service and great bubbles. Just disappointed in how we were treated because we didn't initially have a reservation. I've been many time and will continue coming back (with an already made reservation)!! read more

This place is a magical, most visit spot on our Traverse trips, and we were thrilled that they had exactly one opening during the busy weekend we visited since they are operating by appointment now during the pandemic. While many wineries had switched to by the glass pours only, Mawby still offered a nice variety of tasting flights and some small accompanying light bites (we highly recommend the whitefish dip to accompany their crisp, sparkling wines). They'd also added some fun by-the-can sparkling cocktails, which we found summery and refreshing (they are light, sparkling spritzers and include refreshing flavors like passion fruit and are infused with tea). I'm a fan -- great light drinks for the boat. There's also a small winery next door so when you make your reservation, be sure to book an appointment there for afterwards. Theee free tastings when you visit Mawby? What's not to like. Service was great and the staff was very kind. April, pictured, was really fun and helpful. After our tasting, I ordered a bottle of freestyle for my group to enjoy and they brought it out on ice with glasses for us. So you know - they do exclusively sparkling wine, prosecco, and champagne! They offer cheese based spreads at 3/each which seemed alittle steep for the size, but they were tasty. The environment inside is a bit loud but they have so many patios that you should be outside anyway. We enjoyed some picnic tables seated next to some grape vines. So picturesque. read more

Be aware that L. Mawby specializes in sparkling wines, so if you don't like bubbles, don't bother. As soon as we arrived, we were promptly greeted and shuttled to a small tasting table. I appreciated not having to elbow other people at a bar to get attention. The place was packed, but it didn't feel that way. (Take notes, 45 North.) The gentleman pouring the wine was very chipper and had a lovely English accent, which only made the experience feel more elite. You get two complimentary tastes at L. Mawby. They start with their middle-of-the-road sparkling wine, then you can go sweeter or drier, depending on your taste. I don't recall which I tasted, but they were both good. I'm just not much of a sparkline wine fan, so I didn't buy any, but if you like that kind of thing, you're sure to enjoy their offerings. As you leave, be sure to stop by Big Little Wines, which shares the same parking lot. (I really liked their Mixtape white wine.) read more

I was talking with a friend of mine who thought customer service had slacked off during the run of Covid Theater. I started to think about it and tend to agree Not all places but some. Which brings me to Mawby. We decided to vacation " up north" for the first time in years. TC and the surrounding area seems to be coping pretty well. We went to a number of wineries and ran into no problems aside from LIMITED seating in the tasting rooms but the SAVY wineries used their lawns and beautiful weather to expand their access to guests not constrict it. The "funny" sign at the entrance set the tone. For all of Mawbys hippy "coolness" they certainly showed their authoritarian side by restricting access to anyone under 21 despite the place being virtually empty. I guess they can't sell the kids anything so the heck with that next gen buyer. Michigan Champagne sounds like the punch line of a joke so I'd try a bit harder to market your wares in a tough economic environment. Now here is my dilemma, the wine is good. And the price is right. I bought some to go. But don't throw customer service out the window. read more

Our simple change of mind set the 40-50 year old female Mawby employee off her Rocker. Sorry you have to serve people in a service industry, ma'am. She didn't offer a sample before we bought it so her coworker jumped in to secure the sale. Someone with social awareness! Wow! Neat. The grumpy worker then mentioned a $7 corking fee on any of the bottles. Ok I thought ... that's fine I'm sure there are lots of bs licenses and fees you have to pay as a winery so you're forced to charge people more per bottle or a corking fee to balance out those business/state costs. She stated that, "Mawby charges this fee" and acted dumbfounded and offended when my wife asked about that. Don't take your business frustrations out on customers. read more

We visited Mawby Sparkling Wine room, just around the corner, after our stop at The Big Little. We found more people here on the outdoor patio. There were heaters for the chillier days to come. I ordered the Dry-er flight consisting of Blanc, Tropic & Green wines. My husband ordered a glass of Redd and the whitefish pate. I was expecting more of a champagne-like experience with the wines, so I was a bit disappointed. The wines were okay, not great. Tom raved about the whitefish pate. He finished every drop and licked his fingers afterward. Our tasting fee included the glasses, which we packed in paper to take back with us. The wines had fun names, though they did not tell you much about the wine. Our group liked the Jazz and the Detroit. This was a very fun, laid back stop. I did not learn much about the wine or the process, but all of the employees were friendly and excited. There was also an area to sit down and relax with you wine. I love their wine - I hate their service and business model. Do we stop here almost every time we are in the area? Yes. Why? Because their bubbles are good and cheap and we take a few cases home to enjoy throughout the year. When you walk in, they'll "treat" you with a sample of their Sandpiper sparkling wine. Then, you'll get a menu to order off of (pay $x for a flight, $y for something else, or $z for a glass of something you haven't even tried). You may convince them to get a free taste of another offering...but (depending on who is serving you) may be turned down. How am I supposed to decide what glass of wine I want to have without even tasting it? - I really hate this business model. I'd even be ok with the "Pay $5 for 4 tastes" model - but I dislike that too. Just let me taste a few - even if you charge me, but then refund my tasting fee if I buy X dollars, X bottles, or whatever. I wish most of the MI wineries did it that way, but they don't....*shaking head* Onto the wine - it's actually really good. It's not Champagne or expensive sparkling - you won't get a deep Champagne or like buttered taste from "really good" sparkling wines. But Mawby is super drinkable and awesome for mimosas. At my last visit, the host told us that Mawby could call some of their wines "Champagne". To which, I told her that would be illegal (Champagne (from Champagne France) has super strict rules for who can even use the term over there - and it's illegal to call anything from anywhere else Champagne). The host indicated that Mawby doesn't call it Champagne out of respect. Agree to disagree. Anyways, if you let your host know that you are planning on buying a few cases, they'll let you sample pretty much anything.
