A simple job and a $3,000 watch is damaged. I needed a link removed from my new watch, and it was obviously beyond this store's abilities. I am far too trusting and thought, "jeweler little special watch tools, experience..." WRONG. I should have left when I saw that the store was filled with old junk trinkets for sale everywhere. To adjust this watch band required skills and abilities far beyond what this place offers. Each link has a small screw at either side... well when it was handed back to me after waiting a half hour, it all seemed find and correctly done. They only charged five dollars, so I was happy...oops that was the second red flag. Within a week two screws on two different links fell off, and I could have lost the watch, but fortunately I was at home. But those screws are tiny and gone. Now I have to bring a brand new watch in to have the band serviced, at a top of the line watch repair. It will be over $100. I have one screw they can cannibalize from the one removed link. The old couple that runs the joint are very nice, and if I had a typical less than $100.00 value watch, I would let them change the battery...maybe. I didn't really want to leave a review, but people need to be warned, I wish I had read more bad and truthful reviews, and then I wouldn't have innocently wandered in, ouch! Maybe they are fine to work with costume jewelry and inexpensive watches... but be very careful bringing anything of value here. read more

I was very impressed with the service I received at Max Nass. My mother has been going here for years and recommended I take my jewelry in based on what I was looking to have done. I originally went in to have a ring resized and a solitaire diamond necklace reset in a gold bezel setting. While I waited for the owner to return the day I went in to see about having the work done, his brother was manning the shop and stretched my ring for free. Off to a great start, now it fits! As for my necklace, it took less than a week for my requested work to be completed. For $125, my solitaire diamond was reset in a 14 kt gold bezel setting, my white gold chain was dipped in 14 kt gold to match and the chain was resized to my preferred length. Excellent work, very upfront about pricing, and quick service. I brought in a old (let's call it classic) Bulova women's watch that was in less than optimal condition. The crystal was missing, which was the reason why I came in. It was a custom shape, something different than a lot of the current Bulova line. No problem - they can do anything. $35. Done. The watch itself was dead, so I asked him to take a look and replace the battery. Also, no problem. Spoiler alert, turns out it is a winding watch. He called me back the next day to let me know and that some of the internal pieces needed to be fixed, and it would be an extra charge and additional week. No problem. Just over a week later, the watch was done, complete with a perfect custom crystal and some new internal pieces to ensure it would work without issue. The watch has sentimental value, so it was comforting to know that it was being handled with care. The old school tick tick tick tick is alive and well, and will be for the foreseeable future. I have a gold chain that just happens to need a clasp fixed, also with immense sentimental value, and I'll be bringing it here, as soon as the day comes where I walk out the door without forgetting it. read more

EDIT: Walked in two week ago to follow up and ask them to pay for the watch they BROKE. I gave them my phone number and they said someone would call me. Two weeks and no one has. Will see what happens when I walk in again today. Original: These guys broke my watch. I sent it in to get a battery replaced and thy handed me back a broken watch. They didn't even acknowledge that they broke it. Tried to hand it to me as if it was like that when they. Like I wouldn't notice! Ha! When I asked them about it they said it looked like it was "glued". Wtf? Then they blamed the manufacturer. That the band was on too tight? Why were they even playing with the band? All they needed to do was change the battery. Anyway, they agreed to buy a new band from the manufactured and replace it but then when I talked to the guy who worked on it he was trying to tell me that they would use one of their $12 bands they had in the store. I walked out and refused to pay for the battery and said I'd just handle the band myself. Could I trust them anyway? I just looked online and their replacement bands are $115! These guys hopefully will pay for the band when I go back in. We will see what kind of business they are running. I'll keep you posted. read more

Update - please read before bringing in any meaningful gemstone!! In my previous review, I wrote that I was so pleased to have gotten a call before they started working on an opal of mine that had a tiny tiny chip. I told them that it was fine, and the jeweler told me that they would make the prongs tight to keep it in place. Little did I know that this is definitely the wrong things to do. I went to another jeweler to check it out and ask what had happened. Apparently opal is extremely delicate, so if the prongs of the ring are too tight, it will put too much pressure on the ring which will eventually break under pressure. The jeweler clearly made the prongs WAY too tight, because today two of the four corners chipped. Another has been developing a bit of a ripple, which the other jeweler said means that it's also going to chip soon. What careless work. I had planned on bringing a diamond necklace and an opal necklace here today to get fixed, but I will most definitely be taking my business elsewhere. Will not be returning. read more

I highly doubt there is any jewelry repair store in NYC that is more friendly, helpful, AND affordable than Max Nass. This family-owned business is a diamond in the rough! It's a small, narrow store with your typical row of glass cases w old and vintage jewelry. But the great find is the jewelry repair guru there! My adventure started w a loose stone on a family heirloom ring. The gentleman there was super friendly, tightened it on the spot, but said I'd probably need to come back in 4-6 months because the prongs were weak (he said I'd need to completely replace the prongs). I greatly appreciated the candor, and was extra careful when wearing it. Sure enough, four months later, the stone came loose again. I knew exactly where I needed to go! I brought the ring in on a Friday - it was ready on Monday. Four brand new prongs for a mere $60!! To top it off, he fixed my watch battery ($8), and fixed a necklace (on the house) - both within 10 min while I waited. Super nice guy and he clearly knows his stuff! I will definitely be a regular for all jewelry repair needs. I had an intricate silver ring, off of which one tiny stone setting entirely broke off, due to getting caught several times. I walked in here by chance, and not only were they super nice, even though it was not easy work had to be sent to a facility with laser technology, not to burn the stone, but also suggested I get it resized half a size smaller so it fits more snugly, and with less movement hopefully gets caught less. The work was done sooner than expected, and they kindly left me a voicemail it's ready for pickup. Next day I went in and not only is it better than new, I even bought an antique chain for my necklace watch for a very good price, that the gentleman suggested, as opposed to getting a cut by length much less interesting and more expensive standard chain. I had a terrible experience. I brought a necklace (simple on a silver chain) to Max Nass on Monday to be repaired because one of the links had broken. They said it would be ready on Thursday. When I went to pick it up, it wasn't ready. I went back today (Friday), and it still wasn't ready, but they quickly fixed it in the back. It looked good, so I paid and left.
