Brick City Upholstery - Side View, antique settee after reupholstery by Brick City Upholstery, January 2025

Brick City Upholstery reattached the springs and installed the new upholstery fabric and trim we had chosen, completing the job in just two and a half days. First off, the smell!!!! It smells like an ASHTRAY, like someone who chained smoked lounged on it for the entire time it was gone because I am Not a smoker and it definitely did not smell like that when they picked it up. My entire garage reeks of SMOKE!!!!! I tried several times calling to speak to the Owner, Ally and twice I spoke with her employees that said she stepped out and they would have her call me, which she never did! The other times I did try calling I was unable to leave a message because both mailboxes were full and the last number I called a woman did answer, "who is this??", to which I said I was trying to reach the owner... she hung up on me. Since I am unable to reach the Owner to discuss when she was going to pick up the sectional from my house to have it deodorized, because she has blocked my sister from being able to call, then I can only assume she is unwilling to right this wrong. As a Woman, Veteran Owned Small Business, this is extremely, extremely disappointing, especially since both my sister and I are both Veterans as well. I give their customer service 1 star, because at least I was able to speak with 2 employees whom were both very pleasant, quality of work, I give 1 star only because at least they actually reupholstered the sectional, but the workmanship was subpar as they were supposed to add more stuffing to the cushions and you can see some are fuller than others and then it's the smell, as a non smoker, I'm sorry, I cannot get past the smell! I would NOT recommend this business to anyone. Take your business elsewhere and please do not trust Brick City Upholstery with your personal property. My sister will be posting her own separate review on her full experience from start to finish.

---The Problem---- I…read morehad bought this lovely Broyhill sectional at a furniture dealer in April. Well late last month, I noticed some of the seams starting to split. Being that it was a floor model, there was nothing Broyhill would do. Stressed out, I took to the internet searching for upholstery repair shops. Thing is I had to have someone make a house call since our sectional is really wide and we live on the third floor with narrow stairwells. Needless, to say no one in Hopkinsville would make a house call. ---Cue Macken's Upholstery---- I called Macken's hoping they would save my sectional. The lovely shop owner took about a hour out of his day to drive to Hopkinsville to service my sectional! Mind you he doesn't do house calls, the last one he did was 6 months ago. Watching him sew was so interesting, the man has been doing it for 50 years. You can't get any more skilled than that. I was so pleased with him coming out, I would have paid anything (ok, not anymore than the price of the sectional) for him to sew up those busted seams. It surprisingly wasn't much and the work was top notch! You can't even tell that it's been repaired. ---What I've learned------ I will never buy anything Broyhill again. I will also call Macken's when I need upholstery work done and recommend him to everyone!

Spray adhesive (3M Headliner and Fabric Adhesive/@Amazon) didn't solve the issue because the foam the headliner was attached to continued to crumble. So I did an online search and one of the companies I found was "Bigs Mobile Headliners." I liked the idea that they came to your location and did the work rather than me having to take my vehicle to some other location and leave it. I phoned Bigs and spoke to Jim Lucas and made an appointment for him to come to my house and do the repair/re-cover. Jim came out and none of the (dozens) of fabrics he had on hand were an exact match (one was close, but not exact). Using a fabric sample card, Jim found an exact match and ordered the material. Jim texted me a couple of times to keep me apprised of the progress on the arrival of the material (it was fast). Two days after the original appointment Jim phoned me and gave me a time he could arrive to do the repair. He arrived on time and completed the job in about two hours. The headliner now looks "factory new" (better). The fabric Jim used appears to be of better quality than the original. Jim does need access to A/C power to run his "glue gun" compressor. Interestingly, the price Jim quoted me was the lowest bid I got. It is unusual for "low bid" and "high quality work" to go hand-in-hand. But with Jim, it did. I was completely satisfied with the quality of the work Jim did and would highly recommend him. Oh, and Jim is very personable and cleaned up all of the fabric scraps in my driveway where he worked. When he left, you could even tell he'd been here.
