The face of the homeless is not necessarily that angry man you see in downtown Orlando all the time. Face of the homeless this evening were women, children, and even senior citizens. Some appeared to have just gone there from work, they were very neatly and nicely dressed. All of the women and children we were serving were very kind and courteous and very thankful. The staff that works there they were equally very gracious and thankful that we were there to help that night. We serve a meal of chicken, corn, fruit, and milk. for dessert they received some really fancy cupcakes, that were donated by one of the cupcake bakeries. This evening for me and for all that were with me was definitely a reality check. We'll do it again soon sometime.

People without cars are often the ones who need the most help, yet we got the least. Watching that happen right in front of us was really upsetting. I truly hope they do better and treat everyone equally next time.

I did a variety of things from sorting supplies, books, writing the name on items the teachers wanted, loading them items in the front & i ended the day with directing traffic for pick up. The Sharing Center is a community service non-profit organization located in Longwood FL. My wife…read moreand I have a friend we help frequently and found out about the Sharing Center through our local church. On my first visit here, I was blown away by the services they provide to the homeless community. Our friend used to be homeless for many years but his social worker helped him get into an apartment. Even though he is not homeless currently he still has access to all the sharing center has to offer. He basically receives free medical services, clothing, food, and they also have a restaurant here where he can eat for free, pretty dang amazing! The Sharing Center takes up an entire strip mall lot and is conveniently located off of 17/92 in between Florida and Orange Ave. There is ample parking, and the general public has access to the main store as well, but it's not free for us, lol! Regardless, most items are discounted to what you would see at most thrift stores. The main store contains everything you would see in a thrift store; clothes, shoes, linens, towels, kitchen utensils, cooking equipment, vacuum cleaners, books, magazines, records, CD's, toys, purses, bags, some musical instruments, electronics, and more. This store connects to another store that houses mostly furniture, paintings, wall art, lamps, some workout equipment, knick-knacks, collectables and more. Then there is another doorway that leads into a Boutique, with more thrift store type items, but Higher-end; fine dresses, silver plated silverware sets, jewelry, fancy shoes (like-new), premium sunglasses, and select Disney logo items. My wife and mom purchased several tops from this store. Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything here that I needed. There was a used Clarinet for sale. I asked the clerk if she could take it out of the case so I could assess it and when I did, I could tell it was in rough shape. They were asking $150 for the instrument and when I looked it up online, that's what it was selling for used, but it would have cost me more than $150 just to have this thing serviced by a proper technician, so definitely not worth the purchase. The staff here are all very friendly and the store is clean. There are dressing rooms available to verify the fit of clothing and there are restrooms available to customers. We are very thankful for the Sharing Center because they support the community in a passionate way and have helped our friend who has had a difficult and troubled life. We donate to the Sharing Center frequently to support their cause. The Sharing Center has an amazing selection of items for sale at a fair price. I highly recommend stopping in to support them by shopping here if you are in the area.

I can't say enough things about the Ronald McDonald House Charity…read more I've been volunteering since I was a little girl...it was something that was always important to my parents and it's stayed with me all my life....but I can honestly say that I have found my "Forever Home", if you will. They have very few people on staff and are heavily reliant on volunteers, and so incredibly appreciative of their volunteers. I've never felt like I made such a difference to a single organization as I do now. There are two houses in Orlando. One is near Florida Hospital and one by Arnold Palmer on Orange Avenue, where I volunteer. The Charity is set up to have families and parents of hospitalized children stay near their sick kiddos. They ask for a donation of $15 a night. That's all. $15!!! And if a family cannot afford it, they don't have to pay. It's amazing. The Arnold Palmer house has about 35 rooms, a computer room, gorgeous living rooms, a monster kitchen and more. Local restaurants and organizations come in nightly to cook dinner for everyone and once in a while they will have to cancel at the last minute...and then volunteers like me can fill in. :) So far, I've helped at Bed Day. Tempurpedic donated all the beds to the Houses in the US and I made breakfast for lots of firefighters and police officers while they changed the beds out. I also helped at the Ice Cream Social and Golf Tourney...and I work the desk a couple of times a month at the Arnold Palmer House. I am currently trying to organize an edible garden planting at the houses. If you have any ideas, send them my way. You don't have a lot of interaction with the kids...it's their parents and families you help. Many times it's a quick hello...but sometimes they just want to be taken away from hospital speak for awhile...talk about Gossip Girl or gas prices...they just need a smile and a hug and cup of coffee. Like I said, they are heavily reliant on volunteers so if you have an interest, please visit their site at www.rmhccf.org You can volunteer at special events or if you have a consistent time that you are able to give weekly or monthly you can volunteer at the houses. I recently volunteered under the "Share a meal" program, where people from the community can come in and cook (or bring in from a commercial kitchen) lunch or dinner. On my stop I baked cookies for the holidays and brought in cupcakes donated from Gigi's Cupcakes of Orlando. I was welcomed by the staff and the families who I met, everyone was very nice. The kitchen has every type of pot, pan and utensil you need to make a meal. I'll be signing up for a shift again in January.
