I've lived in Allen my entire life and this place was an absolute staple in this town! The best donuts around but the shop is now under new ownership and nothing is the same! The smokies were the ones you have to warm up and the breading was hard, not like the buttery melt in your mouth ones from the previous owner. The classic glaze doesn't taste the same AT ALL and the blueberry cake donut tasted chemically. This is not the same Max's. They should honestly change the name. read more

Their donuts are yummy and huge but I found them to be too sweet. The 1st time I visited their shop(around 9:30am on a Saturday), the line wrapped around the space. I was prepared and had no problem waiting. The donuts were warm and melted in my mouth! I friggin loved it. I've tried them a couple more times in the morning. One time, they were just about sold out because it was a holiday. The other time, I didn't get them fresh and that's when I realised that the chocolate glazed donuts were glazed all around. Max's... Oh, Max's. This place has the best donuts of any shop, local or far, that I've ever had. Light, fluffy, melt in your mouth. I think the original glazed are the best, but everything I've tried has been amazing. Anyone who has been in the Allen area for a while knows this is the place to go! Heads up, though! My new thing lately is to get my donuts at mom and pop shops! They tend to be much more fresh and fluffy, made with quality ingredients. I've been eyeing Max's Donut Shop for a while due to their great reviews. I went in on a weekday at 10:45am (they close at 11:30am) and they still had quite a few to choose from. They were out of old fashion and the twisties, but plenty of their original glazed, chocolate frosted, sprinkles, kolaches, etc. They're not your typical round donuts. It's stretched out.. a funny shape really. Pricing was great. About $7.50 for a dozen assorted donuts! We took the box of dozen home and opened it and saw the icing stuck to each other. I think the icing/glaze is watered down and the icing started dripping..? The icing on each donut wasn't even either. When you bite into the donut, you have bites where you're biting into a clump of sugar. Thumbs down. The donuts were fluffy but I've had fluffier. Today I ate my first Max's donut and I will return for my next dozen that will be just for me. Nothing against KK but that was the best donut I have ever eaten. The flavor, texture, and shape of the donut will leave you with a memory you'll never forget. Love this place, grew up with it!! Last visit though was disappointing, received donuts that were icing side together stuck in the bag. Idk if they hired someone new who didn't know that if you put two donuts, strawberry glazed, icing side together they would stick and consequently ruin one of the donuts. Their glaze is amazing & I think their chocolate donuts are pretty special seeing how most donut shops don't glaze then chocolate dip their chocolate donuts.. probably the best chocolate donuts I've had. Now onto why I have only given Max's Donut Shop 4 stars.. I personally prefer a light, airy donut that melts in your mouth. Their donuts are thick and heavy.. I have gone back several times just to make sure i didn't get a funky batch & it seems to just be the recipe they use. If you like that kind of donut then you can't go wrong here. These are the best tasting donuts around. The shop very much has a small town community feel to it since many locals are loyal. However, their customer service and operations are lacking. Get there early because the lines stretch out the door or wrap around the inside on Saturday's-- partly because their donuts are the bomb but also because the staff is inefficient. It's frustrating and disappointing to wait in line for 15-20 min only to find they're out of a staple item. We really like to go to Max's every once in a while because they're still the best donuts and worth the wait sometimes but... there are other donut shops near by that are not Krispy Kream, have good donuts, clean facilities, and better customer service. read more

So I don't normally leave reviews, but I felt obligated this one time. Max's has REALLY great donuts. However you can never get them! I am usually only in the area around mid day if I'm on that side of town, and I've even gotten in there an hour before close. They are always either out of dounts, or already closed. For as busy as I always see this place, how can you so consistently be out of the one thing you serve. Every other donut place I have ever seen always has donuts even if you go in right before they close, but not here. They only seem to want to make enough to where they will have non left, no matter what that means for the customer who go out of their way to try and give them business every day. I never leave reviews, but I just had to for this place. I didn't get them myself, however I had a friend go grab them and was pleasantly surprised! I hardly eat donuts and when I do I immediately go to Krispy Kreme for their consistency. Whenever I try other donut shops I am always disappointed. There was a time in my life when I almost gave up on donuts, the same ole generic glaze and lame kolaches. Then suddenly I saw a light at the end of the tunnel (Max's Donuts). The biggest and most delish chocolate glazed donuts in the world. The chocolate is glazed before they are coated in chocolate. I'm not a big fan of donuts but, Max's is #onpoint. I decided to check out Max's Donut Shop after reading a review from a Yelp friend, Dave W. I headed over around 10:30 on a Saturday morning. The parking lot was jumping and apparently everyone was there for a Max's donut! Inside, the line wrapped around the inner perimeter of the entire shop, and I placed myself at the end. I'm not joking, there were at least 20-25 people in front of me! The line moved pretty quickly, I ended up waiting maybe 8-10 minutes. I figured with that many people waiting for donuts, there's got to be something to it! I grabbed a milk from the fridge (and also noted the big blocks of cheese in there.. maybe it's also used for storage?) and was getting nervous the donuts I wanted would be gone by the time I got to order. I did see them add more donuts while waiting, so they are still making donuts at that time to keep customers happy. When it was my turn, I ordered two maple bars (my favorite) and a bowtie which was a twist with cinnamon and sugar. Prices seemed comparable to other donut shops. Once I got a good look at my donuts in the car, the maple bars seemed like giants! Way larger than a normal donut shop's maple bars. They also looked less uniform and more handmade, which I liked. The maple glaze was so creamy and had just the right maple flavor. The donut itself was flaky and slightly chewy, so so good! I did not care for the bowtie, but that's just my preference, I'm sure it's a perfectly fine donut. I will probably be back, but I'll try to find a time when it's less packed! Edit: Came back on a Monday morning and at 9:30 a.m., very few donuts left. With 2 and a half hours before closing, that's just not acceptable in my book.
