I think these are some of the best donuts in the North Texas area. Their selection, plus the quality puts them over the top for me! I cannot get over the size of their cinnamon rolls. Literally the size of a plate. I most like their Sausage Rolls. The quality is excellent, and the balance between bread and sausage is right! I also like the fact that they don't sweeten the bread excessively. That is a huge problem with many other places. Also the bread is a real textured bread, and not some funky rolled pastry around the sausage. I am a big lover of Apple Fritters, and these are some of the best I've ever had. Okay seriously!!!! BEST donuts I've ever had! I read the amazing reviews on this place and had to give it a try. I came in very early (5:15am) so my donuts were fresh and warm. They keep their donuts here basic for a reason. No they don't have donuts that look like the Cookie Monster but they also don't have sub par donuts that are overpriced. These donuts were a big, fluffy, and sweet :) The lady that helped me was very nice. The prices are unbeatable and I have never had a donut this good....until today. I had heard about this place from many friends so even though it is a bit out of the way, I swung by here on morning to see for myself. The interior feels like an old-timey small time shop where regulars hang out. I arrived at 6am and there was already a guy with his coffee, crushing a donut. There was only one person ahead of me in line, but by the time I was done, there was abour 5 more behind me. I must have beat the rush. They don't fancy it up here too much, but the basics are all you need. I got some chocolate and regular glazed donuts. The prices are so cheap and you can smell, see, and hear them cranking them out in the back. It was oh so soft and gooey and area decent size. Bar none the BEST doughnut shop in DFW and I am a HUGE doughnut fanatic. You name another doughnut place in DFW, I have most likely been there. Max's takes all the basics and PERFECTS them. The doughnut holes are warm, soft, pillowy and sweetened just right and are a hit every Sunday morning with my nieces. They are essentially doughnut clouds (as described by my brother in law lol). I think one of the things that stick out to me the most are the lines for Max's. I come in around 9 or 10 am on a Sunday and there's always 25 people at least in line. Finally reviewing this place. I grew up in Allen so this place has a huge space in my heart (aka stomach) - their donuts are your normal donuts (glazed, chocolate, sprinkles, apple fritter, blueberry cake, kolaches, etc), but what sets them apart is the soft/airy texture yet you know it's calorically loaded with how dense the donut is. Best donuts in town!! Something about it just sets it apart from the others. It's nothing fancy, just the classic simple donuts. I think it's the texture, soft and airy and not overly glazed and sweet. My favorite are the donut holes. It's soo addictive, I always have to hold myself back from swallowing a whole dozen of them. So..... I am torn. I have told hundreds of people about Max's, and they have never disappointed. The last time I was here, I didn't see any of the familiar faces, and it turns out they sold the place. Same recipes, same ingredients. Tried them, and they seemed the same. Fast forward a few months.... I decide to to treat mom, the family, people at RaceTrac...... so it's time for Max's. I get up an hour later than expected.... oh no. Now it'll be 6:30 by the time I get there. Aarrrgggghhhhh, I'll have to stand in the dreaded long line. I arrive, and to my surprise, just one guy in the place, leaving.... Huh??? Have I entered the twilight zone? Is it actually 4:30, not 6:30? No line...... score. I am feeling lucky. Place my order, put one Jalepeño sausage on the side. Heat it in the bag with a wet napkin for 16 seconds...... can't wait. I take it out.... the bread is hard.....I'm baffled. Notmally soft, steaming, smelling delicious. Oh well.... must have over-nuked it. No biggie. 1st bite......? Different texture and flavor to the bread, and holy cow is the sausage spicy. Get about half way done..... the texture has gotten worse, the sausage spicier, and there's an orangish yellow in the inside of the roll. I can't say for sure if the bread has changed..... but it was definitely not fresh. At least a day old. The grease soaked into the bread, alomg with the 'hardness". Oh well. At least there's those little bites of heaven. Get home, grab the glazed doughnut to put it on the plate to warm (9 seconds on the small glass plate), and WTF? This doughnut feels like it has some lead weights inside. Seems about 1/2 pound or more..????? More than double the weight of the old ones. I warm it up, and it is doughy, thick, and almost tastes undercooked. Gone is the flaky, delicious, spectacular consistency and flavor I'm accustomed to. I'm truly hoping it's a bad morning, but after reading some reviews.... I'm guessing this has become the norm. Guys.... change it back, or sell it back to the old owners. Please..Please..Please Now I know WHY there's no line. Compared to the Old Max's, this is less than 1 star. Compared to others in the area, maybe a 3 I always look on the bright side..... This shop is very popular for a good reason! Their donuts are big and the recipe for their dough elevates the taste above other local spots. I'm fairly certain I'd be able to pick out a Max's donut compared to all the other small donut shops. There's currently nowhere to sit inside but that's ok! Had to check out this 5 star mom and pop donut shop, and it is mouth-melting deliciousness. We arrived around 9:45a, and within 15 minutes, they had sold out of donuts that Saturday morning, leaving several disappointed customers (early bird totally gets the doughnut worm!). Luckily we had scored a big boxful of plump glazed doughnuts, doughnut holes and kolaches that only cost $10! The doughnuts here are yeasty perfection, but the glaze is very sweet, so hard to eat several in a row, but easy to take a break in between to really feast :). The kolaches here are wonderful - perfect ratio of sausage to roll, and the roll/bread is slightly sweet, soft and just terrific. My favorite kolache in the Plano/Allen area for sure! Max receives eager thumbs up from all my nieces and nephew! read more

When I came across Max's Donut Shop on Yelp, I was extremely skeptical to say the least. How can a small neighborhood donut place (not one of those pricier specialty shops) have well over 100 reviews and an almost perfect 5 star rating?? It made no sense. Well, it only didn't make sense at the time because I hadn't had one of their glorious donuts yet! I've tried a couple of different items from Max's, but the best thing they sell has got to be just their plain old glazed donuts and donut holes. I have no idea how they do it, but the donuts, especially when they're warm, have a slight crisp on the outside while being so pillowy soft on the inside. I'm not exaggerating when I say that they practically melt in your mouth. Their kolaches are also noteworthy as well; larger than most donut places and the breading is awesome. I saw a lot of people mentioning the gigantic cinnamon rolls they sell - while yes they are huge, I thought that it was just okay as it was lacking actual cinnamon flavor. Prices here are pretty freaking fantastic, especially when considering how much larger all of their items are compared to the average donut place. I ordered the Big Jalapeno and also decided to get a regular glazed donut for my dude. I took them both home and we sampled both items. The jalapeno kolache is pretty good, but gosh darn it... the glazed donut was amazing!!! It truly is different from other donut places. You can really taste the quality in this damn donut. It's so hard to describe why, but just know it is the best. Seriously the best donut I've had. And I'm not the only one. I tried getting a dozen of donuts the next day around 7:30 AM and there was literally a line around the door. Getting in line was going to make me late to work, so I decided to just go again the next morning. I read in another review the donuts don't taste the same...I can confirm that....They do not. They are not soft and fluffy like they used to be..They are now more dense and not near as moist as they once were. Bumping my rating downward as we can get this type of donut almost anywhere. We stopped by Max's on yesterday and picked up a dozen glazed and 1/2 dozen chocolate covered donuts. I noticed the staff has changed and maybe this is the reason for the change. They're so warm and moist and huge!!! Krispy Kreme has nothing on Max's donuts. I get these usually for work and they're always wondering where they're from and they can't enough of them. It's always a line in the morning, but they're so quick and efficient that it doesn't take long to get serviced. There's nothing fancy about the inside and it's owned by a Korean family, I believe, but that focus is definitely where it's suppose to be and that's the DONUTS! I've lived in Allen my entire life and this place was an absolute staple in this town! The best donuts around but the shop is now under new ownership and nothing is the same! The smokies were the ones you have to warm up and the breading was hard, not like the buttery melt in your mouth ones from the previous owner.
