My Philly steak was absolutely horrible. Probably one of the worst Philly steaks I have ever had. The meat had no flavor and almost reminded me of a crumbled sausage and it was basically on a hotdog like bun. Nasty! I do not recommend at all. I threw it away. Fries were good. My significant other and I were there on Saturday march 15th 2025 around 6 p.m. the lady at the register has the worstttt customer service ever! She seemed as if she didn't like our color either. This place looks pretty divey whenever I drive by, so I had to try it out. It appears to have been a Denny's in a prior life, and the interior and exterior are pretty worn. But it is clean, considering the neighborhood. Open 24 hours, the menu is wide-ranging. Lunch was pretty busy. Sandwiches come with fries and medium fountain drink. I ordered the Italian Beef and it came out nice and soggy with lots of shaved beef. The bread is an extremely important component, and it held up well to the juice. The sandwich was very tasty, and wins over Portillo's. I also ordered the chili out of curiosity. It tasted more like brown gravy with meat and beans added. Since I like gravy, it wasn't terrible, but I'm not going to get that again. I may enter such a concoction in a chili cookoff as a joke, though... This is a hot dog restaurant located not to far off of I-80. It is also just one block south of the local unemployment office. Like the paint job in this place. The architecture is pretty interesting with the slanted roof and all. There is a lot of food to choose from, but that is not the case if you are on a diet! Maxwell Street Grill has great (open 24/7 day) Chicago Italian Sausage sandwiches, hot dogs, burgers, Gyros at a reasonable price. They have everything from pork chops to chicken to go! This place also has made to order breakfast as well, but I have yet to try it. I bought the Italian sausage sandwich w/fries and also a burger. This place has more of a grill-style feel compared to Portillio's, but the food is just as authentic with a neighborhood Chicago-style flavor, Overall, great choice for those who do not want to travel downtown and want to be local. Fresh baked rolls for sandwiches, fresh and hot fries free with every sandwich, hot dogs with the right amount of snap when you bite them. The catfish nuggets and chicken wings are both very good. May be the best catfish I have ever had. Used to go to this place all the time when I lived in the area. It's divey. Very divey. I'd be lying if I said I would prefer to go there, were other places also open 24 hours. But hey, sometimes the craving for a breakfast omelette or philly steak sandwich spawns at 3 in the morning after a night out, and you could always count on Maxwell to be the only place with the lights on. They have a lot of variety and it's priced decently usually from $7-12. The food quality itself isn't overwhelming or underwhelming, it's just perfectly "whelming." I am temporarily staying in a motel that does not have a microwave or refrigerator so I have to go out and eat. Kitty corner from where I'm staying is restaurant called Maxwell Street Grill. I've passed by it many times on the bus but I've never stopped in. so Sunday I decided to go over there I ordered a hot dog and a cheeseburger. The hot dog was excellent I can't complain about it. But the cheeseburger was nothing like a Maxwell Street cheeseburger. First of all the Patty was too big it just look like I don't know it it just wasn't pleasant. I know it's open 24 hours and you can't expect food like if it was a place that normally closed around 10 or 11 or 12. The next morning I went over and just got some coffee and the coffee was weak I had one cream and two equals normally you still would taste coffee but it just didn't have any body to it. I have to stay in this motel for 10 more days until my apartment is renovated but I really don't think I'll be going over there.
