I've been craving a smash burger and I decided to stop on here for lunch. My first time but I've been driving by several times since I moved to Chicago. Ordered the cheese burger with everything and decided last minute on the Irish nachos since I heard people review them. The burger was a nice size and cooked well. It was delicious, I enjoyed it. The Irish nachos, not so much. It was a heap of sodium city omg I didn't really eat them. So the cheese is the ultra processed cheese on them so it was super salty. You got the salt from the fries, the fake cheese and the bacon. Way too much salt for me and that fake cheese was revolting for me :( Note to self, NEVER order that if I return. It's a cool, old school dinner type of spot. I was the youngest person in there so not sure if younger folks go there or not. The service was good. read more

I've been coming to Schoop's since the 1970's as a little kid with my Mom. I'm happy to see such a nostalgic place is still in existence. I came with my husband and 12 year old Twins, Their first time. All 3 love it. The fresh grilled burgers on the toasted buns are just as good as they've always been and they have really good shakes. The irish nachos (fries, cheddar cheese, bacon bits, scallions and ranch dressing) are delicious and the servings are huge. The servers and counter staff are very friendly. The restaurant has a vintage feel and it's cozy. Huge parking lot. I definitely recommend. read more

I use to live their food but last night I was very disappointed. They are very expensive and to receive food that shouldn't cost over $8. The bread was thicker than the burger. The bugers are not cooked fresh anymore I've been going there for years but the burgers are different. Not piping hot, no crispy edges bugers are thicker than before. I can tell the difference. Please go back to freshly cooked I'll pay the extra money . I come all the way in from the city just for a fresh burger. The food is always good, everything is made to order, that way it comes out hot and fresh. A mountain of fresh fries that you have to share or take home. ( too good to throw away). Service is always great and it's like sitting in an old fashioned malt shop. Too cute every time my husband and I are out shopping close by or he just wants a great homemade burger like his mom used to make with the slightly crispy edges, he travels all the way to Schoop's because he says no place else makes them the way he loves them. Well it was a busy day to meet my friend who lives in Galesburg, IL and unfortunately I could not do a checkin because my android phone is out of order and I had to order another one from my phone insurance. I did not know the place I was visiting had a Schoop's Hamburger resturant? Last I went to one was in the Orland Park Mall last year and the burgers are very good in a unique way. The Burger patties on the edges are crispy and hang out of the bun. They are also known for their Green River soda which is good too. It is literally dark green. It is NOT Mountain Dew color nor does it taste like Mountain Dew. Anyways I wanted to give my review for this place when coming to Calumet City. Unfortunately, I came for someone's relatives celebration on someone's birthday who passed away and wanted to pay respects to their grave in Holy Cross Cemetery. Do give Schoops Hamburgers a try. The fries where a "meh" ok. They needed a little more salt but where ok. Unfortunately, they closed the one location I discovered them at the Orland Park Mall sadly and I would now have to drive here. read more

I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich with a small French fry which cost $13.35. The bun was burnt, and the lettuce were old & wilted. When I returned the food, INSTEAD OF APOLOGIZING FIRST, I was told "well that's just how our lettuce look right now" and then when I said the bun shouldn't be burnt like this, the manager shrugged her shoulders (as if to say oh well). After I said, "there is no way that you should even attempt to justify this" the manger then said "I'm going to give you a refund" as if she was doing me a favor! After attempts to justify, & efforts to make me excited to receive a refund, the manager finally apologized; however, the damage had been done. I love their turkey burgers, but I will never order another grilled chicken sandwich from them again, and I'm sure I won't be back for a Turkey burger until next year. I knew that I should have gone home to cook, instead of eating out. I typically come with my daughter who loves their chicken sandwiches- fried or grilled, and as for me, THE BURGERS! Today, I tried the fish sandwich which consisted of 2 pieces of frozen cod on a toasted bun dressed with tomato, lettuce, and onions, along with a few packets of tartar sauce. Sides are separate, so instead of an order of fries or onion rings, which are ALWAYS DELICIOUS by the way, I went with the Irish Nachos - French fries topped with nacho cheese, chives, sour cream, and I added onions for good measure. A fantastic compliment to a decent sandwich, which I may not try again. I'm still going with a 5-star rating due to all he delicious burgers I've had since moving to Chicago 22 years ago. My usual Schoops is by my job, Monee Manhattan Road, I visit at least 3 times a month specifically for the chili. 2 months ago, I decided to visit the location by my house on Torrence Avenue, in Calumet City, and I was soooooo disappointed!! The difference between the locations was like night and day. The chili was terrible!! But, I allowed for the benefit of the doubt and assumed that due to the late hour, maybe I received the bottom of the pot. I chalked it up to a loss and dumped it. Yesterday, May 28th, my husband based on my gushing about the chili, visited the Calumet city location at 2:00 in the afternoon and purchased us both a large. Again, when I came in from work (with my mouth watering) I was soooo disappointed!! I know from the first experience that I can't even fix this up to be at the very least a decent meal. It tastes horrible! Where is the juice? Where is the cheese, onion, love? Why does it look like alpo? Ok, for years now I've occasionally taken my grandkids out for burgers at Schoops. The burgers are delicious, servings are generous and the service is adequate for a burger joint. If our server is attentive, making sure we have plenty of napkins and straws, etc to make dining pleasurable I always tip sufficiently. On my most recent visit to Schoops, on 4/20/19, me and my grands, 6 of us, after enjoying our burgers and shakes, when the bill came there was something new added to our total... the gratuity. Our bill was like $97, and gratuity was $17 and change. Now I was going to leave a generous tip for adequate service, but not nearly $20. This didn't sit right with me , even now, but we enjoyed our time together so I didn't make a fuss. But is this something new restaurants are doing ? or is this unacceptable ? It has me thinking of finding a new burger joint.., I mean they didn't even point it out until I asked if I could add servers tip to payment, cashier said it's already added.
