Tropical pork, plantains, black beans and rice

I can't believe this is the first time I've been here. When you first walk in, there is a large, welcoming bar area. My daughter and I went here on a Saturday night and there was plenty of open seating. They quickly bring you chips and two types of salsa and water. The red salsa was a unique recipe which set it apart from many generic red salsa that I encounter at other Mexican places. The green salsa was tasty also and not too spicy. I ordered the tropical pork. I told my daughter that it was a Mexican version of Chinese sweet and sour pork. It has many of the same ingredients. It was very flavorful and came with rice, beans, and plantains. It also came with a nice side salad of mixed greens and balsamic vinaigrette (?). My daughter ordered a combo plate with a veggue burrito and chicken flauta. I tasted both. Good, but didn't really shine. We were both surprised to see broccolli in her burrito. Also surprised that it didn't have rice or beans in it. Aren't they considered veggie? They have a huge menu of Mexican-inspired cocktails. Maybe next time. I like the feel of this place, the staff, the food and the prices. They also have a decent amount of parking. I will be back. I'd like to try some other items on the menu.

Great Mexican restaurant that's been around for ages. Finally made it in and ate a lovely meal. I had prawns in a wine sauce with garlic., rice, beans and tortillas. Had plenty of chips with two types of salsa. The tequila flowed and everyone had a great time. Go it doesn't disappoint. What I liked the most was the service . Outstanding!

Pozole! It brings a side of cilantro, Radishes, Lime, onion, and tostadas!

I loved there Pozole best Pozole in town! The service is wonderful and very attentive, always a smile on the servers faces, the place has a very Mexican feel it reminds me of actual Mexico! And the restaurant itself is very authentic.

We stopped to get a little bite, to keep us safe. When our bodies run low on fuel, a we are in a small space with someone, we can get irritable with each hour. I had never been here before. I lobe their deco!!! Totally cool!!! We each had a Margarita. Pretty good for $7 we also gotfree chips and salsa (nothing to write home about. We had the Calamari for $7. Tasted like fresh oil on the Calamari. There were some yummy vegies, too. Now we will be able to travel to onward without screaming at eachother.

The best grilled fish tacos in Marin. I subbed rice and beans for fried plantains. I love the spicy mayo and the margaritas too!

This was a nice way to spend a few hours. The space is neat. It's as small, somewhat dark ambiance with the windows blacked out. So, you do loose your sense of time a bit inside. That's actually nice as it feels like you went somewhere/somewhen else for a while. We had a Manhattan and a Kentucky Mule, and, additionally, we had three different shareable appetizers. First thought, we ordered and devoured a really exceptional cheese plate. I know cheese plates seem a little meh sometimes, but this was really good! I would absolutely order it again. In fact, I would definitely go there just to have the cheese plate again with a drink, a glass of wine. We also had the three tacos shareable. There were three tacos that were stunningly good. Lastly a dish with some little steak medallions and a shrimp. Each of these was about two bites and the flavor and texture was excellent. All three of the shareables and the drinks were exceptional. I have to call out that, with the cheese board, came a little loaf of bread. That bread was really good all on its own. I would definitely want to eat it. I can still taste it. It was really good, but my wife, she's gluten intolerant. They offered, because she couldn't eat the bread, they offered to also bring her out some gluten-free crackers, so she got to enjoy the cheese board just the same without the bread. They gave her the crackers, and do you know, they just gave her those extra. They didn't ask for something more. They didn't do anything. They just took care of her. I really appreciate that. I have to also give a shout out to the Jessica. I don't know how she did it, but she was taking care of the whole room of tables I think. Nice. We ordred all three shareables at the same time and she thoughtfully said, 'do you mind if I course these out for you?' We said yes and she did. I don't think anybody felt like they didn't have everything they needed, so a shout out to you, Jessica, really well done. We're grateful for the service and the high quality dining experience that you gave us on a moment's notice. I hope we can visit again soon. And, especially we want to check out The Boardroom soon. NOTE: This is in a kind of older looking strip mall. Don't be concerned about that at all! It threw us off a little at first and we did wonder when we pulled in though if we were in the right place. Happily, we were!

They're fine, but just not true Mexican food.. I'm really glad that I did and I was not disappointed. The weight staff was on top of everything took our drink orders right away offered appetizers. We ordered the guacamole and I got to tell you the guacamole was to die for it did not taste processed or anything. I probably could've eaten the whole bowl because it was that good and the serving was huge! My husband ordered the chicken enchiladas with a green sauce, which she did offer two other options for sauce and he opted for the green sauce cause he thought it wouldn't be that spicy, but it was a tad bit spicy for him. It comes with a rice and beans your choice of whether you want black beans or pinto beans and of course he chose black beans because he loves black beans. The rice is not your typical side of rice that you normally get at a Mexican restaurant it has so much flavor in it and it was very light and fluffy. I ordered the Carne Asada tacos with pinto beans. And again it was very tasty. I could not finish my second taco just because I was filling up on all the guacamole and a beer before hand so I ended up taking my food home. The flavors in my tacos were so good and it was not dry steak. It was so moist and tender. You could probably cut it with a fork! The flavors were just perfectly matched and not too spicy. We will definitely go back there again and try a few more things off the menu. They are open fairly late so that's a plus. It's definitely a must try place so hope to see you there soon! Before I go, let's talk about the decor. It is so nicely decorated in there. It makes you wanna stay a little bit longer just because it makes it so nice and comfy. They redid the place much to a heritage. Definitely gonna go back!

There will be more to follow as were are on a path to try an raise awareness and hopefully fix the poor service and training of staff we experience too often We HATE being rushed, that feeling you get when the server takes away a plate the second you eat the last bite, even when others in you party still have food left or taking a glass even when there is a drop left. Today at happy hour we sat at the bar and the barman took our free chips and salsa with half the tray of chips still left. Then before we finished our second drink he brought the check with a typical "no rush" comment. We did not say we were finished, he did not ask if we wanted anything else. There a strange sort of passive aggressive treatment to the customer. Growing up in the UK and being a waiter in my youth we were trained to never rush the customer, don't clear plates until the last person finishes so there is not the feeling of rushing them. Too often there's a feeling of treating the customer without true care and then expecting an exorbitant 20% tip We've been to Mamitas many times before, usually the chips are left and if you run out of salsa a replacement is brought out. The staff would not drop off a check unless we had asked for it I prefer eating at home to anything else but sometimes you want to go out. You just want decent, affordable food and staff that are professional, well trained and don't become the focal point of your evening. We always sit at the bar as the waiters are way too over eager, sadly now the bar staff are doing the same. . Maybe it's time to retrain the managers? Either way we're tired of paying $50-$100 with plates cleared and a 'don't let the door hit you on the way out' feeling within a half hour. Life is getting too expensive for that.

Unfortunately, the table service throughout the evening was unexpectedly slow. We ordered an appetizer that never arrived, and no one checked back with us regarding its status. At the end of our meal, we waited for someone to pick up our bill and payment at our table, as usual. But eventually we had to go to the cash register ourselves to settle the bill. What made the experience more surprising was that the restaurant did not appear particularly busy, especially for a Friday evening. About 20 percent of the steak was cooked well done and grey. The rest was pretty much cooked medium rare - almost raw. How is this even possible? Is the grill not even temperature? Worst off the steak was low quality. Very thin and with fat and connective tissue. Very hard to cut. When I order a filet mignon I expect buttery smooth texture. Not texture that you get from cheap cuts of steak. Also, no seasoning applied. Very bland flavor. I know they can do better cause they have in the past. Maybe this is the result of trying to save money and maximize profit by reducing quality? Too bad cause they still have positives. But if the food quality stays this low it is not worth it. We decided to start with guacamole and chips, share a ceviche, and have a Quesadilla con Carne Asada. The guacamole was fresh and well-made, the ceviche was exceptionally delicious, and the quesadilla was very well prepared and tasty. Our server was very friendly and helpful with our questions, and we even shared a few good laughs. The service was excellent. El Rey has been a local spot in Novato for many years, family-owned and known for serving traditional Mexican dishes in a welcoming setting. It has built a reputation in the community as a reliable place for a hearty meal, and many locals have been coming here for decades. The restaurant is a standalone building in a shopping center and offers a large seating area. They also have an outdoor seating area, which I imagine would be especially nice on a warm evening. As a first-time visitor, I left impressed. The food, service, and relaxed atmosphere made for a very enjoyable stop on our drive. We would definitely come back again the next time we're in Novato.
