My family and I have ordered from Carmen's for a couple years now in the absence of San Jose Taqueria not being upon. The food has always been fantastic. We finally decided to come and sit down. We were not disappointed in the food. I had my super burrito with steak and as always, it was delicious. My wife had two tacos À la carte. With the same results as my burrito. Her Michelada was good, not great but she still loved it. The restaurant is decorated well, and lived the tv's going to watch sports. The one thing I was let down was the amount of chips and salsa given out as we sat down. There were three of us and we received two small bowls of green and red salsa. When I say small, they were the size of the bowl you order fries and they give you ketchup. Now, for the price you pay for Mexican food now a day, I am expecting a little more salsa and chips. I will be coming back, as the food is great, and the people are so nice. Just don't be so frugal on the chips and salsa. read more

Wonderfully delicious and authentic!!! Ate here all three days my family stayed in town. And EVERYONE loved it! Tried four different items ( menudo, asada burrito, fish tacos. Asada nachos) and the asada burrito was everyone's favorite. Every ingredient on the burrito stood out and came together perfectly! Even the chips and salsas were amazing! The menudo broth however was lacking flavor and required adding all condiments to bring it to life but given the quality of all other items I will overlook this. I was going to order burritos to take home before we left but forget in the rush of packing and checking out sadly. Highly recommended!! Can't wait to come back next year for more!!! read more

The restaurant got me at their greeting and awesome chips and salsa! Had their macho burrito with carne asada...so wonderful. The meat was so favorable, moist, tender and a large portion in a delicious burrito topped with salsa sauce. Since it was 90 degrees at dinner time, we decided to dine indoors. The ceiling fans were just enough to keep us from sweating. The indoor atmosphere was festive with loud Mexican music. There was a constant stream of dine-in and takeout customers. Our server and wait staff were busy but attentive and cleared our plates as we finished them. The puréed red salsa is quite spicy, as was the sauce on my lettuce wraps of grilled fish (not much fish; they were $5.25 each). My companion ordered the steak fajitas, which she greatly enjoyed. So I have always thought Carmens food was good, but this is more about the service.. We have had so many orders be wrong, and have forgiven them.. All my life of eating Mexican food, for each burrito, plate of tacos.. we got a green and a red sauce, chips and limes for each..I mean a burrito is now upwards of 17.00. Yesterday I ordered 3 burritos, 63.00 and whatever cents..I ordered to pickup..I specifically asked for sauce red and a green for each burrito.. its just a little tiny cup..when my guy picked it up they only wanted to give 2 of each, but we had 3 burritos and each person wanted sauce. But he had to argue with them to get the 3rd set of sauce for the 3rd burrito..the time before my 9.75 of red sauce was green. The time before we ordered a Chile relleno with meat, paid for the meat, but no meat.. I feel like thats just so wrong. Always some mistake..also so greedy..if I order 3 burritos I should get my sauces without arguments. I even tipped them more than 10% and it was togo.. A lot of the Mexican restaurants in Marin are average and very similar. I'd say this place was a notch above the typical Mexican place. I tried 3 different flavors of tacos ala carte (pastor, carnitas and picadillo). They were good sized street tacos with a mild to medium salsa. My favorite was the carnitas but they were all solid choices. My dining partner ordered a combo plate. He enjoyed it. Both he and I agreed that we would come back. It's decent. read more

Nice find in downtown Novato. Came in on a rainy Sunday afternoon so sat inside. Plenty of seating inside and outside on the front patio. Seems very popular. Ordered two regular burritos and one to go. Burritos were prepared as ordered and were huge! Prices are very fair. Complimentary chips and dip were fresh and delicious. Chips were still warm when served! Our server was excellent. Everything was over and above my expectations. To go burrito also had chips and salsa included! I will return for sure. read more

What part of a "quesadilla" has no cheese?. It was not edible. It was for a child with an adult appetite. We were disappointed and surprised. The service was good and the place seemed clean. The owner who was kind of rude stopped us from leaving our tip on the table and gave us our tab that counted our 1 year old as an adult and hit us with automatic gratuity which is fine, we left a bigger tip than what she charged. I love going to restaurants where the people running the place know exactly what they're doing. Carmen's is one of those places. Their tortilla chips alone are one of the best tortilla chips I can remember having, and their salsa really sets the stage for what's to come. I ordered two breakfast deluxe burritos and a menudo on a Sunday for pick up. I ordered via phone and it was ready within 15 minutes. The menudo comes with either your choice of corn or flour tortillas. They also include a bag of chips and salsa with your togo orders. When I came in to pick up, I saw many tables with chips and salsa so I think it is just a standard they have that they give our chips and salsa for the tables when you order. There were about 2 people serving customers and managing the front register. It did not take very long to grab our order. Though there was some confusion on our order number when the guy on the phone told us one number, but when we picked up they said the number didn't exist. We were able to tell them what we ordered and the lady told us we were off by 1 number. Therefore, the guy on the phone gave us the wrong pick up number considering we both heard our order number. Which makes me think may they should consider taking the customers name/number instead to be accurate. The breakfast deluxe burrito ($12.95) was MASSIVE. According to the menu, the breakfast deluxe burrito consists of rice, beans, cheese, eggs, bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, bacon, guacamole, sour cheese and salsa on top. Most of the items I was able to taste/see in the burrito except for the mushrooms. I have not had mushrooms in a burrito like this before but if it was there, I did not notice it probably because mushroom is a subtle taste. Even with or without the mushrooms, it was pretty good and the bacon was still crispy after a 10 minute car ride. I saved half the burrito for breakfast the next day or else if you ate the whole thing, you would not be able to eat for the rest of the day. The chips and salsa that were included was a nice added touch. Pretty standard chip wise and the salsa was pretty good too. The menudo ($14.45) was a little disappointing. I've had menudo in LA and I was hoping I would find something that was similar ones I had down in SoCal. This menudo was a tad disappointing. The person I shared it with agreed that the menudo tasted watered down and the flavors were not very predominate.The menudo had some tripe pieces and a large pig's feet or cow's feet. I was a bit thrown off by this because I was used to menudo being solely tripe inside. I know menudo is cooked in different ways depending on different restaurants/family recipes, but it felt like some flavors were missing. I would recommend getting the burritos though since the are fairly large and a good bang for your buck. But I would pass on the menudo. read more

I had to update my review at our fav Mexican place in town. We always have yummy food here and yesterday was no different. My hubby accidentally ordered the largest burrito, a mistake between Mas and macho, which anyone could make. He ordered the carne asada burrito. It is excellent. I got an excellent combo, a Cabo-style fish taco, and shredded chicken mole enchilada and a pork tamale. I love good Mexican food so much, it's a challenge to decide sometimes, but this was a wonderful combo as I was super hungry. The house margaritas are excellent as well.
