Asada super burrito and asada nachos
    Nico A.

Wonderfully delicious and authentic!!! Ate here all three days my family stayed in town. And EVERYONE loved it! Tried four different items ( menudo, asada burrito, fish tacos. Asada nachos) and the asada burrito was everyone's favorite. Every ingredient on the burrito stood out and came together perfectly! Even the chips and salsas were amazing! The menudo broth however was lacking flavor and required adding all condiments to bring it to life but given the quality of all other items I will overlook this. I was going to order burritos to take home before we left but forget in the rush of packing and checking out sadly. Highly recommended!! Can't wait to come back next year for more!!!

6/8/26 Carmen's in Novato was awesome! Quesabirría especially was amazing. Same with carnitas wet burrito super flavorful the salsa had a nice kick to it as as well as the pickled onions. Staff was friendly will definitely be back!!!!

The restaurant got me at their greeting and awesome chips and salsa! Had their macho burrito with carne asada...so wonderful. The meat was so favorable, moist, tender and a large portion in a delicious burrito topped with salsa sauce. Also had a grilled fish taco which was just the right size for me after chowing down on their delicious chips . Super friendly service. This will be our go to when in Novato!

Since it was 90 degrees at dinner time, we decided to dine indoors. The ceiling fans were just enough to keep us from sweating. The indoor atmosphere was festive with loud Mexican music. There was a constant stream of dine-in and takeout customers. Our server and wait staff were busy but attentive and cleared our plates as we finished them. The puréed red salsa is quite spicy, as was the sauce on my lettuce wraps of grilled fish (not much fish; they were $5.25 each). My companion ordered the steak fajitas, which she greatly enjoyed. I thought they were just average in flavor and with a chewy and slightly grainy texture.

Very good food. Drinks are better than food. Need to improve their steak fajitas. But salsas are really good. Folks here are friendly and very attentive.

    3 tacos (carnitas,al pastor,picadillo)

A lot of the Mexican restaurants in Marin are average and very similar. I'd say this place was a notch above the typical Mexican place. I tried 3 different flavors of tacos ala carte (pastor, carnitas and picadillo). They were good sized street tacos with a mild to medium salsa. My favorite was the carnitas but they were all solid choices. My dining partner ordered a combo plate. He enjoyed it. Both he and I agreed that we would come back. It's decent.

Alan is an excellent waiter. Addressed gluten-free issues and helped us pick the right combo. Consistent and excellent food. Eat there or to go.

I have been going to this restaurant for many years now. It is within walking distance of my home. I can say that the service and the quality of the food has not wavered. The staff is wonderful. Will check on you often. If anything is not right or to your liking, they will fix it without questions. If you have an allergy or food preference, they will accommodate your request. As for the food, what can I say other than YUM! I always leave an empty plate. If you are looking for a wonderful restaurant with great food, this is your place.

Chicken Quesadilla with absolutely no cheese. What? Just extra spicy chicken. It was tossed.

We ordered take out food for five of us and one child. The food was mostly just fine. The chicken quesadilla that we ordered for was filled with really spicy chicken and no cheese. What part of a "quesadilla" has no cheese?. It was not edible. It was for a child with an adult appetite. We were disappointed and surprised. For five dinners we received one tiny cup of pico de gallo, after I specifically asked for pico de gallo for everyone. Oh well.

My family and I gave this place a try and the food was okay, we had ordered a couple molcajetes and the food was warm and the stone was cold, so the cheese didn't melt. The service was good and the place seemed clean. The owner who was kind of rude stopped us from leaving our tip on the table and gave us our tab that counted our 1 year old as an adult and hit us with automatic gratuity which is fine, we left a bigger tip than what she charged. Food just wasn't worth the price.

food was great! Ambiance was nice, not too loud and has seating outside. Service was prompt & friendly. Would definitely come back again.

We chose to try a new place, and El Rey caught our attention. We arrived around 7:30, and the restaurant wasn't busy since it was a Sunday evening. Looking at the menu, I was drawn to their ceviche. We decided to start with guacamole and chips, share a ceviche, and have a Quesadilla con Carne Asada. The guacamole was fresh and well-made, the ceviche was exceptionally delicious, and the quesadilla was very well prepared and tasty. Our server was very friendly and helpful with our questions, and we even shared a few good laughs. The service was excellent. El Rey has been a local spot in Novato for many years, family-owned and known for serving traditional Mexican dishes in a welcoming setting. It has built a reputation in the community as a reliable place for a hearty meal, and many locals have been coming here for decades. The restaurant is a standalone building in a shopping center and offers a large seating area. They also have an outdoor seating area, which I imagine would be especially nice on a warm evening. As a first-time visitor, I left impressed. The food, service, and relaxed atmosphere made for a very enjoyable stop on our drive. We would definitely come back again the next time we're in Novato.

My wife called around to find that El Rey was open - and had menudo. What we didn't realize was that there was a full-on buffet-style brunch going on every Sunday from 9-2. First, the aromas were intoxicating. Second, there was a HUGE buffet line with Pozole, Menudo, rice & beans, chilaquiles, sausage or eggs with chorizo, veggies, potatoes, huevos ranchero, birria, quesabirria tacos, EVEN American brunch favorites like scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, and pancakes (but why eat those when there is AMAZING Mexican buffet to choose from?). Coffee/soda also included, and desserts including fruits and custards. I figured for sure it was upwards of $30 a head for the buffet, but the bill comes and it's like $68 for the three of us! What a value! BTW, everything I had was delish. Fresh. Hot. Tasty. And the fact that 90% of the people dining at the restaurant were Latinx tells you all you need to know. Highly recommend this brunch, Novato!

UPDATED REVIEW:…read more What a disappointment! My family placed a lunch order for take out for Mother's Day that did not meet expectations. We knew they would be very busy today so we made sure to place the order early at 11:00. My mom only wanted a cheese enchilada but unfortunately it was about 1/3 of the size of the usual cheese enchiladas that my dad ordered. We did not order a child size enchilada! I called to voice my concerns and the lady that answered the phone was the same frazzled person I had called my order in to. She was clearly very busy and overwhelmed with the volume of Mothers Day orders they were not prepared for. She apologized and did not show any concern to make the order right. I ended up sharing my chicken quesedilla with mom, but have noted that after this experience we wont be going back to Tommy's Salsa anytime soon. We had a reservation for Father's Day and waited about 10 minutes for a table to open, as it was the busiest I have seen. The table was nice, big enough for the five of us, and the ambiance is always great here as well. We were quickly greeted by our server, Eli, who provided chips and salsas to whet our appetites, and we soon narrowed our focus to the food and drink menus. We ultimately decided on some El Jefe Tacos, a shrimp and crab enchilada, a three-item combo with two chile rellenos and a cheese enchilada with green sauce, a carne asada taco, and the volcanic Molcajete (served in a warm stone bowl with grilled steak, chicken, and prawns. Covered with a red chile, roasted tomato sauce). For libations, we went with a mojito and a new drink - for us at least - the pineapple mezcal mule! The food came in a timely manner, and the molcajete was still bubbling! Hence, the volcano nickname! The mojito was very minty and refreshing, and the pineapple mezcal mule was an acquired taste for some of the group - I enjoyed the smoky earthiness of the mezcal, but it's not your run-of-the-mill tequila, so if you are new to mezcal, be aware of the difference. The food last time was a bit spicy, but this time it was not an issue. Still spicy, but not to the point of being overpowering. Even the salsas were not as extreme. Good for some of us! All the food was delicious, and the three-item combo was great to look at as well. As we say, "the eyes eat first," and indeed my eyes were little piggies that meal! Overall, the service was great, the food great, and the entertainment a perfect background for what would have been just a noisy bunch of chatter. Overall a great Father's Day lunch.

My daughter and I went here on a Saturday night and there was plenty of open seating. They quickly bring you chips and two types of salsa and water. The red salsa was a unique recipe which set it apart from many generic red salsa that I encounter at other Mexican places. The green salsa was tasty also and not too spicy. I ordered the tropical pork. I told my daughter that it was a Mexican version of Chinese sweet and sour pork. It has many of the same ingredients. It was very flavorful and came with rice, beans, and plantains. It also came with a nice side salad of mixed greens and balsamic vinaigrette (?). My daughter ordered a combo plate with a veggue burrito and chicken flauta. I tasted both. Good, but didn't really shine. We were both surprised to see broccolli in her burrito. Also surprised that it didn't have rice or beans in it. Aren't they considered veggie? They have a huge menu of Mexican-inspired cocktails. Maybe next time. I like the feel of this place, the staff, the food and the prices. They also have a decent amount of parking. I will be back. I'd like to try some other items on the menu.

The dishes here were nice enough in presentation. The place itself is very large and the menu quite extensive. I ordered the Taco Salad with grilled chicken and though there was nothing wrong with it, I'm someone who requires spice with my Mexican food choices. Green and red salsas were delivered to my table and - wow - I've never tasted salsas that had zero spiciness. Now I have. These added exactly nothing to the taste profile making it clear that were I desirous of any spiciness it would have to come from Tapatio or Tabasco.
