I'm an industrial electrician at a power plant and had my Red Wing Boots resoled here. Took forever to get them back and then the soles started flopping off while I was at work after 3 days. I returned to get them fixed again and was told they had no guarantee. They told me I used them too roughly and should walk on softer surfaces. They had the gall to tell me to pay $80 for another sole. Never Coming Back. Go to Miracle Instant Shoe Repair on Culver Blvd., they have a guarantee because "you're walking on their reputation". BEWARE! Don't go here for any type of shoe work. I brought in a couple pairs of shoes. One specifically was a pair of sandals and asked to get new patent leather on the heel due to scuffs and torn leather. I came in three days later to the same ripped shoe that now had my torn bits of patent leather glued down. It looked horrible and after courteously asking if she could discount the shoe because this was NOT what I asked for, and she raised her voice at me. After that, she asked me if I Chinese insinuating that Chinese always like bargaining/not paying full price. I couldn't believe my ears. I have never experienced such terrible service anywhere! I dropped off a single shoe that needed to have the heel replaced on Saturday morning and was told it would be ready Monday am. I didn't need it right away so was fine with it but when I arrived on Monday afternoon the shoe was no where to be found. The man there said he didn't work for the store and that he worked only for the shoe shine. He also didn't have a phone number for me to contact anyone. I found a business card and decided to give one of the numbers a call. A man answered and this is where it all went down hill. He said he didn't care and that it was my problem and I could call his employee since she accepted the shoe and promised it to me at that time. He proceeded to call her crazy. He was crazy, seriously. I told him that I didn't want to call her and would appreciate if he would reach out. He then told me he didn't have time for me and hung up on me. Wow. What used to be one of the real treasures of Ocean Park has unaccountably plummeted to being a largely useless and offensive eyesore. Maya Shoe Repair was once a charming little storefront adjacent to a nondescript, but handy, panaderia in Sunset Park. The little old guy who ran the place knew about shoes and boots, did good work for a fair price, was well-liked, and exuded an easy, comfortable Mexicanismo. It was always pleasant to go in and drop off whatever zapatos needed repair, polishing or sprucing-up. The place was a veritable warehouse of shoes, sandals and boots awaiting either fixing or retrieval by their owners. Dusty, faded old posters and other ephemera hung on the walls with racks sun-bleached laces, newspaper clippings and photos from magazines long out-of-print. Oh, and unaccountably one or two kids' bikes would be laying around or parked out front. There was real personality in this tiny shop. The kind you can only get by sticking around for a long time. Maya was reliable y simpatico. And then.... The little old guy isn't there any longer. I don't know where he went; retired maybe, though that seems unlikely for someone who's manner was so relaxed and who's approach to work always seemed utterly devoid of stress. The guy who manages the front desk is, at best, capricious, off-putting in a hard-to-define way, and appears to be uninterested in anything having to do with shoes. He makes up prices out of sudden whimsy (really, $60 to polish two pair of shoes? Hell, no!) and demands payment in advance. Even the interior of the shop, once quaint, has now for reasons not quite definable gone tawdry and vaguely sinister. This was a WORST FIRST.... I dropped off my shoes on Saturday June 10, 2017 and the Owner told me to comer pick them up on Monday, June 12, 2017 after 12pm... I arrived at 12:10pm and the Owner told me to return after 2pm.... I arrived at 2:50pm and not only was the Owner not there, but my shoes were STILL not ready... to make it worse they only take Cash so I had to waste money by using an ATM at a neighboring business. How many ways can I describe terrible and lacking professionalism to say the least. I have never written a bad review as I believe in giving the opportunity to correct/resolve any situation. The way this works is you drop your shoes off and they give you a ticket without any estimated charges. With that being said I had an ugly argument to say the least with a so called grown man. The older gentlemen charged $14.00 to repair heels which was fair and the rude one charged me $!5.00 to clean a spot. To add insult to injury when I questioned the manager as to why he charged $15.00 to clean a spot her response was "maybe he's mad at you." Really!!! I could not believe that she responded that way. The positive from all of this is I only spent $15.00 to learn that i should follow my first mind. This guy cherry picks hence his pricing is based on his feelings and he appears to be all in his feelings. If the manager can state that the pricing was possibly based on the fact that he's upset as if that's good business then need I say more?....Moving right along to an establishment that values customers. read more

Went to get my brand new Bates shined. This guy tells me he has something special in mind for the boots, since they are brand new. I returned a week later and the boots were not even touched. I watched this CLOWN use shoe spray and a heat dryer on the boots, but I keep my mouth shut since I do not shine shoes for a living, I figure he knows what he is doing. After going to my post and working for about two hours the boots start cracking and peeling. I was not too happy about that. Then I return to show this CLOWN the boots and he gives me this smart ass smirk and tells me there is nothing he can do for me. I left this place before I did something that I would regret. This place ruined a beautiful pair of heels of mine by cutting into them and affixing a cheap quality heel. While there I witnessed the rip-off artist try to charge a guy $25 to glue a flip flop. The worst. This is a one-woman operation and she keeps erratic hours. I stopped in a couple of times and she was not there. The space is now shared with someone who polishes shoes/belts, etc. for LAPD. I got some rubber taps put on a pair of women's shoes for $7. The taps immediately started to make noise which evidently was because the adhesive didn't hold and the taps kept moving. If I could give this business zero stars, I would. The lady that "assisted" me when I went to pick up my shoes was rude. I left two pair of shoes for repair on a saturday evening and paid when I left the shoes, paid $28, no big deal, reasonable amount. I prepaid for my shoes and the ticket I was given was marked with $28. I never have been to this place before so I don't know their process. Again, prepaid the $28, no big deal. When I went to get the shoes the lady said I have to pay. I said, I paid when I left the shoes. She instantly accused me of lying. Never trying to figure out who helped me when I left my shoes or nothing. I asked her to call the manager or the guy I described to her. She picked up the phone and never dialed but said he didn't answer. I explained I don't know about your process, but I paid. She said rudely, I'm.not giving you your shoes. I'm like what!?!? She was very rude and had no customer service skills. She eventually did call someone and was talking Spanish but she was talking about me and calling me crazy. I guess she assumed I didn't know Spanish. After I said something in Spanish to her, she tried to make me realize she would get in trouble if she gave me the shoes. I said so it's on to make the customer double pay? She said it was my responsibility to make sure he wrote that I prepaid on his paperwork. I'm like, that's not my job. She said yes it is. I said I have a paper that said $28 with zero balance. Very rude. First time here and will never go back. I ended up paying half of the $28. I would not recommend this place. I dropped my boots off for a resole and told them to call me with the price. Heard nothing. 2 weeks later I went back and found that they had resoled my boots with thick vibram soles AND wanted $60 for the job (almost the price of these boots). They alternately stated that they "left a message on my phone" and/or that my "phone was not working". I refused to take them saying that they never got my permission to fix them at that price and they let me have them for $30, but not before some heated words and a trip to the ATM for cash. Where do I start? I should have walked away the minute I stepped foot into this place. It looked more like a cheap bazaar than a shoe repair, with rolls of carpet on 1 of the side walls and all sorts of junk in the back of the store. Anyway, I took a pair of toddler satin shoes in to be dyed dark brown. The only person there was not able to give me a price but said they could dye them, and told me to call back after 5pm to get a price (I left the shoes there). We picked a color off of a chart. I forgot to call that evening, so I called in the morning....I was told that the shoes were taken to the Santa Monica location & had already been dyed! Still no price. I was told to go in again the next day to approve the color. When I went in at 3pm, the shoes were gone again....apparently back to Santa Monica to be touched up. Annoyed that I wasted a trip, I called the guy in SM (Alfredo, 1 of the owners) & was told the price would be $9 and that I could check on the color/pick them up over the weekend. He indicated he would dye them again if need be. I went to pick them up on Tuesday, being too busy before then, and gave my ticket stub to the older gentlemen that was there....not the same guy I started with, although that guy was there too, on the phone & recognized me as this was the 3rd time I had been in. The older guy couldn't find the shoes. I spotted them (as they were the only tiny pair in the store) & identified them for him. The tag on the shoes was not my tag - different number, different name, different phone #, wrong price ($18). Obviously the tag had been switched by mistake when the shoes got dyed in SM. At this time, I was holding my daughter's brown flower girl dress in my hands so obviously these little brown shoes MUST be mine...but I guess this little old man didn't trust me so he called SM to report the problem (meanwhile the other guy who knew the shoes were the ones I brought in, said nothing)...after less than a minute on the phone, he passed the phone to me. Maria from the SM store (Alfredo's wife I later learn) proceeds to tell me that I have the wrong ticket....that somehow it's my mistake that I don't have the RIGHT stub....that the price was not $9 & never was. She goes on to tell me that she called me over the weekend & that I hadn't returned her call - since I hadn't received any messages from this crazy woman I told her she must have called the number on the current ticket which was not my number. DUH! She refused to believe that she could've switched tags & even tried to blame the guy in the store, even though I had seen him put the correct tag on my shoes when I dropped them off in the first place. She also told me that she had to dye the shoes 3 times to get the brown "right" - even though I was never able to approve the color as I was told I would. In fact, the shoes were too light & before this fiasco I was going to ask them to dye them darker, but after hanging up with her I paid for the shoes & left....never to go back there again! I have gone here for 16 years since I moved in the neighborhood and have been satisfied but things have changed. The following experience happened to me about 4 months ago. Tried to forget but other people should know. The father is a nice gentleman but it seems his son is now taking over. Fine with that except for how the son treats his customers. I finally bought a pair of cordovan leather shoes (about $600) because they last forever and keep a great shine. Needed new heals. The son insisted that I pay up front and pointed to a sign he posted saying so. I said I did not think this was right (I wanted to see the work done before I would pay. After all I was entrusting him with an expensive pair of shoes). He got surly with me. I commented that with this treatment I wouldn't come back. He said that was fine but I would probably be like his ex wife, "says she won't come back to me but she always does" suggesting that I would do the same. To be fair, they do good work and I want to support neighborhood shops but I won't patronize a place that is insulting to their customers. You decide. read more
