    Spreads and pickled vegetables

My friend suggested this place for brunch and I'm so glad she did. Easily a new fav. The location is a bit hidden but once you enter it's absolutely lovely. The atmosphere gave exclusive. We sat at the bar and the sever was very friendly and walked us through the menu. We did the $75pp brunch option which included so many items. It was so much food in front of us and I loved it! My friend and I can eat but we had to take some stuff home bc we were just too full after awhile. You get your money's worth and it's a different brunch experience. Definitely recommend!

Maydan had been on our list of places to try for a while. It can be tough to get a reservation. We were able to add ourselves on the OpenTable waitlist and receive alerts if a table opened up. Luckily we were able to get a table outside at 6PM on a Friday night for four people. The tawle tasting menu is about $100 per person and it was a great way to try the menu. We were able to pick from a list of spreads, vegetables and meats and at the end we were also able to choose two desserts based on our party size. You start with Mouneh - pickled vegetables, Honey Soaked Dates, and the most delicious Halloumi. You then select 3 spreads - Muhammara, Walnut Casik, and Beet Borani with warm pita bread. For entree we ordered Chicken Shish Taouk, Ribeye, and cauliflower. They had a nice cocktail list so we tried a few cocktails. The espresso martini includes gelato, and there was a green cocktail that was very refreshing. The service was really good. Please be aware that they do add a fee on the bill and guests may not notice this and may tip an additional amount which we did, but the service was outstanding. We were able to walk inside and see the open fire grill where they make the pitas on and go to the bathroom. We really enjoyed sitting in the alley on a nice evening.

The best meal and service I've had in so long. We had the tawle menu and it was so much food for us. Everything was delicious. The shrimp, the chicken, even the salad was incredible. Do not fill up on the breads and dip!! Our server was awesome. We sat outside. A little hot in the summer - but not awful.

The experience at Maydan is so unique whether you sit inside or out. Sitting inside, you get to experience the hearth fire, and all the sites and smells. Sitting outside you are in the alleyway, but the decorations are so unique and beautiful, making you feel like you are immersed in the culture. We sat outside, and it was such a beautiful evening. Our server was wonderful. she first introduced herself with a really delicious cup of mint tea, which was a wonderful welcome. She also had some wonderful recommendations, and all ended up being delicious. I especially loved the field salad and the muhammara. What I think this restaurant does especially well is find unique flavors and really expand on them. The salad dressing is still on the top of my mind. It was both light and flavorful, while also and citrusy and just overall really delicious. The spreads were also so creamy and presented so beautifully. The bread itself was also nice and thin and was a great accompaniment for the spreads. I also ordered the kefir shrimp, and that was also just cooked perfectly. The flavors were so in your face with just a yummy, limy, fresh, flavorful taste. It was very good.

I came here for my 30th birthday celebration and all I can say is WOW- what a way to ring in a new decade. I left feeling full, grateful, and with a new love for middle eastern cuisine. The service was impeccable- the waitress and sommelier were both extremely friendly and knowledgeable. Nadia, our waitress, offered suggestions about what dishes would pair well together for the tawle experience and shared her favorites. The sommelier went over the extensive wine list and helped us pick a nice red that paired well with our chosen dishes- it was called Yacoubian Hobbs from Armenia. The ambiance was comfortable and welcoming- you could dress up or down, pretty much anything goes! The walls are lined with colorful patterns and draped tapestries to create a high end living room vibe. Now for the fun part- THE FOOD! The first dishes brought out were the mouneh (pickled veggies), the honey soaked dates, and the three spreads (we selected the hummus with lamb on top for an additional $15, havuc, and beet borani). I'll add that they continuously bring out fresh, warm pita throughout the whole meal. The lamb hummus was savory and well-balanced, but very rich. The havuc had a beautiful lightness from the carrots and I loved the textural element of the crispy onions on top. The beet borani also added a welcomed freshness throughout the meal and was vibrant, light, and had wonderful yogurt flavors. The underrated dish were the pickled veggies because INSANE. I used these in bites during the entire meal and they all had a unique flavor as if they were each pickled in a special way- my favorites were the white radish and scallions. The honey dates were a sweet palette cleanser and cut through the savory elements of the meal. We continued on with the next round consisting of the field lettuce salad, the three condiments (we chose the toum, chermoula, and harissa), halloumi, omani shrimp, and chickpeas. The field lettuce salad had a zesty vinaigrette and I appreciated the acidity addition of the sliced oranges and the crunchy, salted pistachios. The toum was a garlicky aioli that I felt was best paired with the chickpeas- although all the dips were delicious with all the dishes and the pita. The harissa was a lighter version than I am used to, spicy, and paired well with the veggies and ribeye. The chermoula was my favorite and paired best with the ribeye- it reminded me of a flavorful and herbaceous chimichurri. The halloumi had a sweet honey and was grilled perfectly, paired with nice crunchy nuts. The chickpeas had a lovely consistency and were well seasoned- I think it was sumac, but whatever it was, I couldn't get enough. The shrimp were ONE OF MY FAVORITE dishes from the whole meal. They were juicy, seasoned perfectly, charred, and just chefs kiss. I enjoyed them with the chermoula and squeeze of lime. The main dishes and veggies came during our final (besides dessert) round. We ordered the sayadieh as part of the table experience and also added a ribeye to the order. We had ordered the charred carrots, but they accidentally brought us the wildflower honey zucchini instead, so we were lucky enough to be able to try both. The branzino (sayadieh) absolutely blew my mind. It was citrusy, spicy, seasoned with bright spices, and incredibly moist. I would honestly skip the ribeye- it was cooked to a nice medium rare and had a nice flavor, but I don't think it compared to the rest of the meal. The charred carrots were spicy, cooked soft- also one of the standouts. The zucchini was served beautifully and I enjoyed the sauce, but could also skip next time. We ended the meal with the bitter orange sorbet and the chocolate mousse. The sorbet was a nice palette cleanser as it had zest in the mix and was very light after the heavy meal. The chocolate mousse was very rich and had a new balance of chocolate and peanut flavors. They brought over complimentary glasses of champagne to celebrate my birthday as well :) I cannot wait to come back to try more of the menu and I am so happy to have had a diverse taste of the Middle East. I'll also add that we had a HUGE bag of leftovers that lasted several meals and they packaged it up like true professionals. A food lover completely satisfied and eager to get back :)

    Complimentary whole wheat pita

A popular spot near Adams Morgan. The restaurant features Middle Eastern grilled food. In fact, there were several fire grills in the center of the first floor of the restaurant (it has two floors), and you can see the staff constantly grilling the meats, fish, vegetables and pita. This, together with the dark vibe, made me feel as if I were eating with ppl. from B.C. in a cave. Very interesting. I like that. For food, I got the Carrot Havuc, Omani Shrimp and Halloumi. But first I was served with some freshly made whole wheat pita. They were soft, chewy and earthy. The Carrot Havuc was basically a carrot+garlic puree. Very silky, refreshingly sweet, and a bit sour. The sourness may come from the garlic and lemon. Paired well with the pita and meats. The Omani shrimp came with 5 pieces, each shrimp was ~1oz so it was not very filling. The shrimp were meaty, fresh, juicy, though I wish it could be less salty, even if I already asked for less salt. The shrimp was said to be marinated with dried lime and tamarind but I could only taste the flavor of dried lime. The Halloumi cheese was brushed wild flower honey and topped with Egyptian dukkah, then baked until the outside was golden brown. It was salty and sweet, and the (tons of) sesame seeds added some fragrance to it. However, the peanut was too roughly chopped so that they fell off from the cheese when I slice it, and thus difficult to eat with the cheese. Service was not worth the 20% mandatory tip. For example, when I asked about the sourness of the Carrot Havuc, he did not know why and said he would "taste it and let me know where the sourness came from". Unfortunately, he did not tell me until I asked again when doing the check (I doubt if he tasted it in the first place). Neither did he ask me about the other dishes. Overall, the dishes were great but not impressive, and was mostly heavily flavored. The service could be improved.

When you walk in the doors it feels like a Middle East eatery in the heart of Marrakech. They cook most dishes over an open flame so the ambiance is robust and the smells are great. Service was attentive and prompt. We ordered the tawle which is a tasting menu. I would recommend this over and over and over again. It was one of the best meals I had in DC in a long time. The branzino was to die for

Came here with my hubby and two kids to celebrate my bday. I guess it wouldn't be ones first choice to dine in with small kids, in fact we were the only table with small kids, but it was a great experience! We had reservations for mayday but got sit in the Medina, right across. The ambiance was pretty cool, loved the beautiful fabrics draped on the ceiling and walls, it felt like we were dining in a Moroccan tent. The service was great, our server was friendly, prompt and had great suggestions. We did the tawle experience, and were overwhelmed by the amount of food! We ended up with so many leftovers. Everything was really good, the dishes that stood out were: ribeye, muhamara spread and Omani shrimp. The mint tea was perfect for the chilly night and to settle the stomach after so much food! I was excited for the desserts but they weren't my favorite. We tried a chocolate pudding and coconut pudding, I wish the dessert options were more extensive. Overall it was a very good experience! Street parking can be hard to find, so arrive a few minutes earlier!

Some dishes were better than others but not sure if it was worth the value. The service was decent but nothing exceptional. Make sure to make reservations ahead of time. I don't recommend the outdoor seating since I feel like it's a less than wonderful experience. I enjoyed the halloumi and the shrimp dish. The chicken tawouk was bland and the muhammara lacked any spice. Honestly disappointed overall.

First time coming here. A little tricky but when you find this hidden gem you will not be disappointed. Sat at the bar but there's no bad seat in this spot. This place has the vibe of a secret, with a top tier service. When you enter you will have a warm welcome. Now to the food, you will leave full and with leftovers. Everything was chef's kiss and full of flavor. Hands down one of the best places I've eaten at.

Maydan is a very cozy spot that provides a unique dining experience. It's dark and broody--perfect for date night. We opted for the tawleh experience which includes dessert and swapped the kebab and salad for the current specials (Brussel salad & scallops) and ordered the lamb for our entree portion. Overall, the food was good -- nothing particularly amazing. My personal favorite was the Mouneh aka the pickled plate. The pickling was bright and deliciously sour. This is absolutely something I would buy by the JAR. Everything else was good, but at the price point, I did anticipate more finesse. For example, the lamb (+20pp) was past the point of tender where it needed no chewing. While this may be a bonus for some, I believe there's a fine line between tender and overcooked and this teetered over the edge just a bit. Service was great and all the staff were friendly and accommodating. Special shoutout to Sam for the help and great service!

Beyond incredible start to finish. It's gorgeous and watching the cooking on the health is beyond cool. Incredible spreads - the hummus and Muhammara were the best we've had - such incredible flavor. Amazing shrimp and chicken shiah, and what they do with sweet potato's and vegetables is an art. Their couscous with raisin and more was fantastic. Special thanks to our server Joshua whose kindness, knowledge and advice made the meal amazing.

Came for another birthday and we had a great time! Our server was amazing and had a great conversation with us too. Maydan is so pretty inside and I will say you should check out Medina right across the alleyway. Also so beautiful, we started there for a drink and then came to Maydan. All our drinks were so good! I had the date night and how cute is the date in the shape of a heart. The food was amazing! Again we did the tawle, the family style menu where everything comes out. The pickled vegetable platter was really amazing and unique. We loved it. The meats were so good, the sides were amazing. Literally didn't have a bad bite, everything was perfect!

How is outdoor dining on the patio in the winter? Is it warm and how well do I need to bundle up?

    Is there belly dancing here?

I haven't seen it yet, but the atmosphere is immaculate

    Is it Toddler friendly?

No, not really the vibe. But I'm sure it is totally possible. But generally a very grown establishment.

If you make a reservation, do you have to do the $75 per person pre fixed menu or can you do the la carte menu? I am confused by their description. It says the pre fixed menu is offered for reservations but is it mandatory?

I believe it is mandatory for dinner.

    Is the meat halal?

We were told that the lamb is halal, but the beef is not.

    Do they have hookah?

Can someone explain the 28 days out process? If it's booked through July are the August dates released ON the 28th of July? Thanks!

No that's not the process. Everyday at midnight another day is open for reservations. But you have to act fast.

How am I supposed to get a reservation here? I've stayed up till midnight twice in a row, refreshing the page constantly and as soon as the clock strikes 12, it says there are no reservations for the day. Any tips?

Walk in and put yourself on a wait list. Two of us were told we were #7 on the wait list on a Friday night and we were called less than an hour later to be seated before 10:00.

Is the lighting dim or bright at night? Does it vary depending on the seat? Ambience?

I'd call it neither especially dim nor especially bright. Just right. Same with the sound level. I have a slight hearing problem but didn't find it difficult to converse. Excellent ambience, at least to me.

Is it better to sit upstairs or downstairs?

It depends on what you're looking for. Upstairs is more intimate and relaxed while downstairs is right next to all the action by the cooking fire, prep area and bar. Plus you have more foot traffic downstairs with servers and people milling around… Read more

What are the best dinner options for dinner for two?

Is there anything on happy hour?

That made the experience feel even more special in hindsight. We walked in on a Monday night without reservations (clearly a theme for us!), not knowing they were needed. Thankfully, they were able to seat us in the bar area, which turned out to be a perfect spot for a relaxed dinner and a glass of wine. We ordered a mix to share: hummus, spanakopita, kofte kebab, and adana kebab. Everything was delicious, but the spanakopita really stood out. It was a bit unexpected--not layered like the traditional version, but more of a rolled presentation. Even so, the flavors were wonderful and elevated in a way that made it memorable. The only slight disappointment for me was the wine selection. The red wines leaned more dry than I typically prefer--I tend to go for something more fruit-forward--but it didn't take away from the overall experience. Dessert was the one miss. We were really hoping for baklava, which wasn't on the menu. Instead, we ordered the walnut delight. While it had all the right flavors, it didn't quite deliver the wow factor we were hoping for. That said, the food, atmosphere, and overall experience were still impressive. The service was attentive throughout our meal, and every dish arrived beautifully plated with great attention to detail. We started with the Beyti Sujuk Rolls and the Beetroot Hadiqa. The rolls were one of my favorite appetizers. They were crispy, flavorful, and paired perfectly with the yogurt and tomato sauce. The Beetroot Hadiqa was equally impressive, with beets, apples, walnuts...it was a refreshing combination of sweet, savory, and creamy flavors. For our entrees, we ordered the Riyash of Lamb and the Freekeh Short Rib. The lamb chops were cooked beautifully and served over couscous with broccolini, while the pistachio crust added a nice texture. The Freekeh Short Rib was incredibly tender and the rich beef jus paired perfectly with the mushrooms. It was hearty, comforting, and one of the best short rib dishes I've had. The cocktails were just as memorable. I ordered the Asfar So Good, while my partner had the Ashita Affair. Both were beautifully presented with a silky foam on top and were as delicious as they looked. The Asfar So Good was light, refreshing, and well-balanced with subtle floral and citrus notes, while the Ashita Affair had a smooth, creamy texture with pistachio and rose flavors that made it feel almost like a dessert cocktail without being overly sweet. This is definitely on the pricier side, but the quality of the ingredients, presentation, atmosphere, and service justify the cost. Every plate felt thoughtfully prepared, and the overall experience was memorable from start to finish. If you're looking for elevated Middle Eastern cuisine, creative cocktails, and one of the most beautiful dining rooms in Baltimore, Ammoora is absolutely worth the splurge.

The Muhamara came with pita and was such a great dip. The chicken rolls were equally as good with their own sumac labneh dip we enjoyed. For entrees, we shared the Braised Lamb Shank and Makloubeh. We wanted to try their dessert and ending up getting the Ashta Bil Asal and Ruz Bil Karaz. We started with the sweet potato soup despite the fact that the reviews for the lentil soup here are the highest. Yes! If it's featured: get it! The turmeric and coconut milk make this soup delightful. The herbs made it so fresh and there was just the right amount of sweetness and gentle heat. Parsley really adds to this recipe and I'm not usually a fan of this herb. The pitas are soft, thin and light. Love them. We needed to order more. I've never had such paper-thin pitas. Yum! I love love love the hummus, here. It is nothing short of divine. The flavors are fabulous and deeply complex. You can really taste the tahini. The olive oil is mild and delicious. I exclaimed, "the hummus was the best ever." And then 5 minutes later, I read a review by Yelper James H. where he says it's the best ever and, "... this hummus at Cedars of Lebanon might have ruined all other hummus for me forever." While I've had similar swooning feelings over the hummus at Lebanese Taverna in Tyson's Corner, this hummus is at least a top contender if not the metro DC area's hummus winner. The cucumber mint yogurt salad is nice, cold and refreshing. You can really taste the mint. I would order this yogurt salad with every meal. The falafel pizza is unusual and fresh. Straight away-- you can taste the tahini, parsley and couscous. The dough is grainy and natural. And there are radishes on this falafel pizza: not overpowering. For the $9 or so pricepoint, this dish is a true labor of love. To prep all of these vegetables, even with food processors, must take time. How novel of a dish! Put the yogurt salad on this pizza. You will thank me. And I only did it because I was watching someone else slather it on. There were at least 12 desserts on the menu. Meow. If we weren't so full of pita, hummus, tahini and fresh veggies, we certainly would love to taste a few of these. As well as the Turkish coffee, with an authentic ceramic and metal carafé presentation.

Pretty easy, breezy no-frills restaurant…read more We stopped by Cedars of Lebanon, because it was one of the few places that had outdoor seating and was not full. The restaurant has a small outdoor dining area with three four-seater tables, which was find for our two dogs. The experience overall was pretty low key, which necessarily is not a bad thing. Although there is waiter/waitress service, you will have to order your food at the cashier's counter. Actually, maybe that's only a thing if you are dining outside. The menu has a nice mix of Middle Eastern dishes. I went with a beef (or maybe it was lamb) kabob plate. The portions were fine and my meal was pretty good. It was not out of this world amazing, but it got the job done. I thought that the prices were pretty good for the area and the amount of food received. Although the food was fine, I do not think that I would go out of my way (e.g., driving more than 30 minutes) to dine here. Just be aware that the restaurant does not serve alcoholic beverages.
