A fun time! My friends and I came to Mayes Oyster House because it was the first stop on the St. Patrick's "Lepracon" bar crawl. I think it was the perfect start to our day. Despite the line being a bit long to enter, we got in quickly and without issue. The bouncer was super nice. He held onto some canned drinks that we had brought with us so that we didn't have to throw them away (which in this economy, I definitely appreciate)! We reminded him about the drinks on our way out and he happily grabbed them for us. This spot has great vibes. Despite it being crowded, everyone inside was being respectful, dancing, and having a great time. Once you get to the opposite side of the building, the space opens up to a larger dance floor with seating around the sides. The music was great. They were playing 2010s dance music and it was definitely a hit. The line at the bar moved very quickly and the bartenders were friendly. The Lepracon special here was $5 tequila shots and we were pleasantly surprised with a heavy pour. I will definitely be back! read more

Went to Mayes Oyster House for Halloweekend (which may have been my mistake) but it was soooo packed. They had an extremely long line (1+ hour wait) and once we got in, there were way too many people to the point where I was getting shoved and could not even stand because of all of the pushing. Standing room only. They took our money & had us come in even after I had asked about seating! We couldn't get food, there was nowhere to eat it if we had. And the audio was not working at all well into the first quarter when we left. I asked for a refund. Of course I didn't get one. I am beyond disgusted with my experience at Mayes Oyster House. This place didn't just give bad service, they engaged in what appears to be unauthorized financial misconduct. I was charged a tip on my card that I did NOT authorize, did NOT write, and did NOT sign for. That is not a misunderstanding. That is not a "mix-up." That is an unauthorized charge, and under California law, that falls into serious territory including violations of the California Unfair Competition Law and potentially the California False Advertising Law, as well as federal protections under the Fair Credit Billing Act. Let's be clear: adding or altering a tip after a customer leaves without consent is not "business as usual", it can be considered fraud. What makes this even worse is that I am far from the only person this has happened to. There are MULTIPLE reviews from different customers reporting the exact same issue, tips being inflated or added after the fact. At that point, this is no longer an isolated incident. This looks like a pattern of behavior. So now the question becomes: Is management unaware, or are they allowing it to continue? Because either way, it reflects a complete failure to protect customers from being financially exploited. I will be disputing this charge with my bank and documenting everything. I strongly encourage anyone who has experienced the same thing here to do the same, and to consider filing complaints with consumer protection agencies. To anyone thinking about going here: check your receipts, check your bank statements, and honestly, just don't go. No night out is worth wondering if your card is going to be tampered with afterward. Went to Mayes Oyster House this weekend and honestly won't be coming back. My friends and I were there for a bar crawl, and it was one of our first stops. My friend ordered a drink but didn't realize they don't take Apple Pay, so I offered to pay. Totally fine, not every place in SF does. But the bartender already seemed annoyed for no reason, so I just gave her my card and let her close it out. I figured I'd try ordering from the other bartender instead, and the order itself was fine. But when she gave me the check, she literally tossed it onto the table. I work in the service industry, and I would never treat a guest like that. Super unprofessional and just bad energy overall. Definitely won't be spending my money here again or at least until they hire staff who actually want to be there. read more

My friends and I went to Mayes Oyster House for their Super Bowl watch party and it was a terrible experience. The event was advertised as free entry before 3:30 on Eventbrite, but when we arrived they told us it was not free and made us pay anyway. This seems to be a recurring issue. We know they do use Eventbrite because other people bought their tables through the exact same site and were let in without a problem. It honestly felt like a tactic to get people there and then charge them at the door. The audio for the game did not work for about 40 minutes after kickoff, so we missed the entire first quarter with no sound. For a Super Bowl party, that is unacceptable. We also ordered a bucket of beer and were told it would be 50 dollars, but we were charged 65 instead. Between that and the rude, unprofessional staff, everything felt overpriced and shady. I signed up for a niner watch party with event bright to get in for free. So they decide to open at 4 for a 5 o'clock game and then started charging people 40$. Knowing that your not going to go anywhere else at that time. They let it go way over to capacity where you can't even walk. I tried to order a bacardi and coke and they gave me a well rum and charged me 20$ for a mouth wash size cup. Thats shady business in my books. Had a friend visit from out of town a couple months ago. Got us tickets for the comedy show, I love supporting small businesses and upcoming performers and the arts. So this seemed like a no brainer and something low key to enjoy. I WAS WRONG. Two of the comedians were EXTREMELY raciest, and I am not easily offended. I'm a little disappointed in myself that I didn't remember to leave a review sooner, so that I could say what the comedian said verbatim. I know it was something along the lines of black ppl getting killed by the cops. A couple more unfunny, inappropriate and hurtful comments before I spoke up and asked. "Are you serious right now? No one's laughing. " We ended up leaving and as we did the host made a joke about, we must be leaving because of the racism. DUH. It has been a while and I completely forgot about the exchange. until I am now looking for events to go to for PRIDE. I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS ESTABLISHMENT for any people of color or my community of LGBTQ+. Or anyone with a moral compass for that matter. Drinks mid, bathroom horrendously filthy and the comedy was not even close to being funny. Very close off Polk, easier to park on the cross streets but there is a parking lot across the street. Full service bar, plenty of areas to sit inside and there is an outside area for food vendors, if you're having an event. Nice space and stage area, friendly staff! Seems like they let everyone in so it gets extremely crowded. There is drinkers all over the floor people step on your shoes/feet. Broken glass. No tables and chairs to sit at some have drinks all over them. There is no place to move. The bathrooms are nice and clean but in the hallway they don't like people there so the bouncers yell at you if your stopped there. There is two bars one in the front and one in the back super crowded. This place is seriously and piece of trash. At the end of the night so many girls said their phone was stolen. I looked down at my purse and it was open and my phone was GONE. It's super crowded people invade your privacy and hardly can move. Tacos??I asked... what about the full seafood menu on your web sight ?? His reply was.. we have no CONTROL over the web sight!!! I said you need to find out who does it as your web sight gives a full menu and description !! We walked out and went down the street to find some dinner and then came back for the show that our friend was appearing in just after 7... The place features a full menu on their web sight, so people don't be fooled and stay way from the fraud of a place... NO FOOD except for $0.10 tacos.. That is FALSE advertising and down right fraud.. Before was sat down, I ordered my partner a rum and coke and a plain coke for myself plain coke as I don't drink liquor anymore.. the bill was just under $20.00.. we left right after the show and will NEVER Go back there again !!! I love raw oysters. You can't beat happy hours for a dollar each on fresh, raw oysters. However, their dollar raw oysters tasted a bit funky and not fresh. It was clearly lacking in quality. I guess you get what you pay for. I have only gone to another place for happy hour raw oysters and it wasn't too shabby. Mayes' oysters were though. This place has a bar and booth area, but the booth area was closed off during the not-so busy hours. How do you win customers' dining experience that way? Well, I guess it cancels out the nights that this place becomes lively - especially when they have nights that can be rowdy and have music blasting out loud till the late wee hours! I was craving oysters so I found this place on yelp. They have happy hour every weekday from 5-7 and weekends 3-7pm. With $1 oysters! Yay! The menu said they were from bodega bay. I got a dozen. They were all different sizes and a little gritty but salty and sea-y so I enjoyed them. My bf had a beer on tap ($1 off during HH) and the buffalo hot wings. A small order comes with 6 wings and carrot and celery sticks. And we also got a large order of fries to share. The fries were too crispy I think. Like there was barely any potato flavor or meat inside. Their HH menu actually has a large selection. Also the service was good - the lady at the bar was pretty nice and attentive. But the place wasn't very busy. Only 3-4 other people inside. I hope this old school place is busier on the weekends and stays in business. Decent place for oysters. read more

On Saturday I was walking by Mayes Oyster House (MOH) and an employee was throwing beer from across the sidewalk, from close by the door where he stood onto another individual who was sitting in the parklet. The other individual was obviously inebriated. Two young black men stopped to protest the employee's behavior, thinking that the employee was simply trying to rouse the guy. The MOH employee immediately began justifying his actions by explaining that the guy urinated in the bar somewhere. The two young men continue to implore him not to throw beer but water instead. The MOH employee continued to throw beer and I decided to stop and speak up in support of the young men's position. It seemed that the MOH employee realized that his behavior was calling unwanted attention, so he stopped throwing the beer and started back inside. Then out of nowhere he turns to me as I am walking away and says, "You're probably gay, aren't you? Faggot!", which of course has nothing to do with the situation at all (and I noticed that he, who was white, didn't have the courage to slur the black men when they were there but picked me out to denigrate instead as soon they had walked away). I made a choice comment about his internalized homophobia and walked away. People like this MOH employee have no business working in a public-contact position, especially in San Francisco, and it is disturbing to me that MOH could employ in a customer contact position someone so prejudiced and with so little self-control. read more

I wasn't planning on writing a review because I have not ordered drinks or food at this place, so I can't speak for the quality of those things. I did want to add to the millions of reviews regarding stolen items. I had everything stolen out of my zipped-closed purse. My card was used several times that evening and the next day. Another friend in my group also had phone and wallet stolen. The fact that this is extremely common at this bar SHOULD be a concern of the bar. You should want your patrons to feel safe in your restaurant, and make efforts to try to stop the thievery if this is happening so much. I see bouncers standing all over, how can none of them notice people reaching into purses? My last comment to add is to answer your phone and clear your voicemail box. Does the review still count if my only memories of this bar was when I was already 3 drinks in? The "baby" in our group finally turned 21. I had no choice but to get my couch potato butt in to a skirt and some boots and head up to the city. We started off at Playland couple doors down, but decided to see if any other bars were getting lively. It was already midnight so the line outside Mayes wasn't too bad. Cover charge that evening was $10 a person, reasonable I guess, but I still prefer free bars... They had a great DJ playing that night and the music was like a siren luring me in. Luckily it wasn't too crowded and my group actually had a comfortable amount of room to dance. I was pleasantly surprised that the bar wasn't packed either. My friends and I were immediately served as we walked up. I hazily recall ordering a shot of Fireball and a beer which totaled $13. Is that good? Bad? I don't even know, but I'm not going to complain about getting a quick drink. I definitely look forward to coming back when I'm sober so I can go to town on some oysters! read more
