We had some damage done to our faux leather furniture by a young dog in her "chewing phase". (Boy am I glad that's over!) After Yelping around, I contacted Maynor to fix a dining room chair and a sofa sectional. Maynor does excellent, beautiful work at a fair price. He does his magic in his garage in a residential neighborhood, communicates mostly via cell phone, and is quite flexible on times for consultations, drop offs and pick ups. And he's a nice guy, with a good sense of humor. I will say that if you want to avoid the unfortunate experience of another unhappy yelper, take it upon yourself to write things down that you feel are important. Maybe ask him to initial it. Maynor is not big into paperwork, and he may not remember the original quote or other details of the agreement. I don't believe there's anything shady in his motivations. I think he's just more workman/artist than bookkeeper. read more

I posted a positive review to Google two years ago when Maynor upholstered my very difficult dining chair seats. He was referred by a friend who just had him upholster her two leather sofas. My neighbor saw his work at my home and had him upholster her antique chair and was very pleased with the result. Maynor is a very pleasant, courteous person who did a great job on all three of these recent projects, promptly and for a reasonable price. I'm concerned some of the other recent reviews are so negative, as I don't think this is reflective of his larger body of work. read more

This guy's a hack!! I really wanted to like this guy, but in the end it was one of the worst experiences I've ever had with a business. He's a very nice guy, and in the beginning I was thinking "old world craftsmanship" but I think that was just a big deception. But he's a salesman who will tell you whatever he needs to BS you. I needed to have a leather car seat recovered,so I brought it to him, and he said he would call me with a price. So I wait and I wait, and I call him a few times but nothing. So, after 3 weeks, he finally calls me back and gives me a price which seems good for what we had talked about. Oh, he says he'll start on it the following week. I ask" when's it going to be done"? He says the following Friday. He also says that he's going to replace everything but the headrest. I say fine go ahead. So, on that Friday, 5 weeks from when I'd brought it to him, I call him, and he says it's not ready. Call me Monday, he replies. I get upset, tell him it's not what he told me. 2 hours later he calls me and tells me it's done. So now I go to pick it up, and in his dimly lit garage it looks good. not perfect but good. My daughter want her car back, so I pay him $375, and leave. I get home in the sunlight, and see that the color doesn't match, he didn't replace the back panel, and I as look closer, guess what, there's not an ounce of leather on this thing. It's all Vinyl. Plus the stitching's not straight, the panels don't line up So I call him up, and tell him that he didn't replace the back, and he replies "It was in perfect condition" That's not the point, you said you'd replace it. And the color doesn't match, he replies " Oh, it'll blend in he says". Now I'm getting mad. So I say but it's not leather, and the replies "Oh vinyl is stronger than leather" Now I'm insulted. So I tell him I want my money back, and he says ok. So I drove over there, and now he's got somebody else to back him up. I ask for my money back, and he gives me $275. I say I gave you $375, and he says no, it was $275. Can you see the steam coming out of my ears now? On one hand he says that I only paid him $275, and at the same time he tells me he wants money for his time and material. The worst part of this whole experience is not only that he lied repeatedly to me, but he did it with a sense of calm that made me believe that he's done it many times before. Very beautiful job on my chair. Looks great. They did it in a week too, but then they didn't call me soon enough so I could pick it up before they went out of town. A bit frustrating on the calls and being there business side, but make up for it in the quality craftsman department. Anything can happen at an upholdstery shop--so it is wonderful that this place knows how and does it very well. Don't judge Maynor by his not phoning etc, he really knows his stuff and gets the best out of his workers. I paid cash since his card reader wouldn't work. No problem for me. But I would feel better paying cash anyway there. Plan on it. I just handed him an envelope-fine by me. But let me tell you for quality work like this--you do have to pay. If you would rather buy new--do it. It is only for your quality pieces that you can't bear to part with. Nowadays people rarely know the difference, but these guys know and know how. Highly recommend them. The shop is in a seedy strip mall and I wouldn't go there in the dark, but really it is ok in the day. Great Service and great repair. I called Maynor's for an upholstery repair since the back of my sofa's wood was cracked at one side. This is the main wood the supports the sofa at the top back which runs across the sofa. Maynor's gave me a good price for the repair and also picked up the sofa on a Saturday morning and returned it on Tuesday. I was very happy with Maynor's both the quality and his personal service. I bought a couch that gave little support for my back. Maynor came right out and was very knowledable and helpful. He redid the cushions and returned them in a timely manner. When I tried them out they felt too firm which was what I had told him I wanted. He said he would redo them no problem and no extra charge for picking them up again. He is not only excellent at his craft; but he is very professional and honest and helpful. I highly recommend him. I called Maynor and he text me a price to redo my couch and chair pillows. When he delivered them he said the price was going to be more than what he had told me. Instead of $450 he wanted $850. I refused and gave him what I thought would cover the delivery charge. He did not repair my 4 arm rest covers that just needed a little sewing. He took them and said he had another delivery in the area and he would drop them off next week. When next week came and went there was no delivery of my arm rest covers. When I called him about it he did not know who I was or what I was talking about He was in LA and he said he would call me when he returned which never happened. I still have not heard from him and do not have my arm rest covers. I used Maynor 10 years ago and I do not know what has changed for him to now treat his customers in this shoddy way. I've been wanting to re-upholster my couch for quite some time, but never got around to it until now. Yelp has always been on the money so when I saw the reviews I didn't hesitate. Maynor was quick to respond. In the end there was a discrepancy in the price so be sure you get it in writing exactly what needs to be done and how much the job will cost - for that I had to lose one star. I had mentioned I wanted the cushions replaced as part of the job and when he emailed to tell me it was ready I asked if the cushions were replaced and he would never answer the question.Unfortunately, someone else delivered the couch so I couldn't ask him directly. In the end the cushions were not replaced, but wrapped so I was a bit disappointed. The job was done well and it turned out really nice. I think if everything was put in writing I would have had a better experience. Still would recommend. read more

Maynor's is phenomenal !!! They reupholstered an old worn out 1920's antique sofa and chair that was literally falling apart , and transformed it into a museum piece. They rebuilt the entire sofa and chair which is adorned with tufting,woodcarving, and upholstery studs, the workmanship is impeccable and it was very labor intensive. We had an old, sturdy large 3-piece sectional sofa that we loved, but the fabric was totally worn and torn. We couldn't find anything similar that was new, so we decided to re-upholster it. We got two estimates of around $2000 for labor, plus fabric. Then a friend suggested calling Maynor Barnica. He is a very experienced guy who has been practicing this craft since he was a child in Central America. He charged us around $1000 for labor, and referred us to Sal Berressi fabrics in SF, a fantastic store with great prices (see Heather, the owner -- she is great). We then decided to get new cushions for two rocking chairs, too. Maynor did a great job for a great price, and he is a very nice person who goes out of his way to accomodate customers. It is best to use email and follow-up phone calls to make sure that the details of your order are very clear. He did everything we asked and did it very well.
