As an avid quilter who drove over C 200 miles on a quilt shop hop recently, it was nice to find the Cotton Patch Quilt Shop. It is filled with tons of beautiful quilting fabrics to choose from, as well as quilting books. My Tesla car did not fully self drive directly to the shop, it got me stuck in the back of a parking lot next door, from which I had to carefully back out from the long driveway with assistance from a passerby. However, I arrived in one piece to the Cotton Patch. The quilt shop had anything you might need for quilting, either as an early quilter or an experienced quilter. They offer quilting classes that you can sign up to take. They have a fine selection of BERNINA sewing machines and embroidery machines in a separate room inside the shop. I needed some recommendations about finishing a Hawaiian t-shirt quilt that I finished the blocks, and an experienced quilter that happened to be there, gave me some wonderful ideas written on a piece of scratch paper as to how I should do the sashing around my blocks in the quilt. She also helped me to pick out two complementary colors that would work well with all the colors of my 25 finished quilt blocks. I purchased 5.5 yards of cotton quilt fabrics and went home happily, with an idea as to how to put all of my blocks together in a finished quilt. I signed up for their store newsletter, and I look forward to getting tips and tricks from the quilt shop personnel who write it up monthly. The staff mentioned that they also participate in a quilt hop as well later in the year, and I look forward to hearing more about it. Had no idea The Cotton Patch existed. Found out about them through Stanley middle school where my son had to buy some fabric for home ec to sew a pillowcase. We walked in, and was floored by all the fabrics choices. They had other things as well such as books and certain kits or something. They also have tread and all sewing needs stuff, including those fancy digital sewing machines. Those that worked here were really nice. We showed them the sheet that listed what we needed and someone asked my son his favorite color and led him to an area with blue patterned fabric. He chose a couple and a navy thread. Someone helped cut the amount of fabric, and then we checked out. Wow I was surprised how expensive fabric is!! Not even a yard of each of the 2 fabrics, and it was already close to $30!! I suppose the educational value and supporting local and handmade stuff is worth it though, given one can buy a pillow case with pillow for far cheaper. Highly recommend for those that know how to sew and enjoy such crafts. I don't have the talent or creativity, but I appreciate all the different types of fabrics and such here! read more

Do not sign up for a class. They cancelled class just 5 days before class was to start. Yes, I got a refund BUT I bought $50 in required supplies(special ruler & pattern) and all the fabric pattern called for. I was cutting out the pieces to be ready to learn a new technique; curved piecing with the $30 ruler. They require students to cancel 14 days ahead of class. They claimed class was under enrolled . So they didn't know low enrollment until 5 days ahead of class? I smell a rat and I have been going to this store since it opened. read more

I adore this cute little but mighty shop! Around for over 30yrs, I found the patch by simply looking for a parking spot. I had only known of Joann fabric at the ti.e and my head exploded when I saw the very first bolt! Ive always been treated with educated kindness, knowledgeable people and an amazing array of fabric and sewing finds. The Cotton Patch is an adorable, small, cozy little fabric shop with a large selection of fabric, buttons, and thread--despite the store's size--that was very helpful when I was doing some last minute Xmas shopping. The truth is I don't get to visit this shop but o will soon because of the great support they provided when I phoned for help locating a particular type of ribbon and cord. The sales associate who answered listened to my request carefully, searched to see if they had it or something similar in shop, and then made a recommendation for another shop (I was unfamiliar with it), even providing me their number. read more

Honestly they never seem to be open- no quilter that works 9to5 can go to the shop! They need better or even extended hours- missing out on huge sales being closed so much -sad I literally got off work early and went at 3p (close at 4) I had three of the five people -(4 cutters 1mgr) working there pass me up- helped others there that arrived after I was ready - like I wasn't good enough to shop there. The Cotton Patch is open for business. 4 customers at a time with 30 min to shop. You can make an appointment ahead of time by calling the store or go in person and see if there is a wait. It was my first time there and the store is adorable with a very nice variety of fabrics. On display were quilts and embroidery from classes. The workers were so friendly and helpful. I'm working on my first quilt and got a private tutorial :) I really appreciated that both Beth and another staff member (whose name I didn't catch) gave recommendations and advice but weren't pushy - they explained different options and what they preferred and why. I love coming to the Cotton Patch! They have wonderful fabric. I bought my Bernina sewing machine from them Pre- Covid and Jocelyn was very helpful. They are conscientious about Covid precautions in allowing a limited number in the store and I don't mind waiting on their nice porch. They will Come get you when it's your turn. I have called the store like 45 minute before they close to see if I can come in and they are very responsive. On a side note I was so Much more appreciative of the Cotton Patch after I went to JoAnn's to get some thread; it was so busy there with people waiting to get fabric cut. read more

Sorry two years later to amend my review but really disappointed with the way I had direct easy questions that required 2 minutes & a walk to a wall of products to point to the product itself. (Had to ask 3 times to point to an appliqué needle (that was out of stock & why I couldn't find it on my own despite looking twice & getting the other employee to help meinstead of waving to a wall of products (from 10 feet away) to look for an out of stock item. If you can't keep track of customers & don't have the attention span to answer a very simple questions w/out being distracted & skipping to the next person who is walking in the door behind you, a number system so the customer can have 2 minutes of complete customer service & not get waved off to fend for yourself. This place may not look like much on the outside, but on the inside, what a hidden gem of a store for those of us who prefer cotton! They not only have a great selection of good quality cotton fabrics which are in vogue with the times, trendy, whimsical and cute, they also have fabric that is very basic, classic and timeless. This is the kind of place that one goes to looking for fabric for a certain project but comes out of there with so many ideas and imaginations for even more projects, wistfully saying to oneself "there are so many things I want to make!" This place really stokes the creative juices. The staff here is very friendly and helpful and I can tell this will become one of my go to places for cotton fabric and sewing supplies. I stopped in today to get some sewing thread for my mother, who's just getting back into sewing after a few decades away. She lives in Lafayette, I live in San Rafael. I set her up with one of my machines and I forgot to bring thread! I've driven by this place for years and thought I could grab a few spools of neutral thread and some tailor's chalk so my mother wouldn't have to wait to get started on her project. We had to wait in line due to COVID, but the ladies working made sure to keep updated on how long the wait would be, and one of the ladies even told my partner and me a joke. Time flew. Once inside, I was really impressed my how much they've been able to pack into this little place. A showroom full of gorgeous Berninas. All of the best notions and tools. A jaw-dropping selection of fabrics from the best quilting cotton brands. Too many batiks to choose from, many sweetly displayed in a plethora of baskets filled to the brim and color coded in half yard rolls (of course there was yardage too). Even my boyfriend was impressed. I'm mostly a garment sewer, and I have five machines already, so I really have no business here. But I don't see how any lover of textiles would not want to check this place out. The quilters I saw seemed to be in their happy place. If I ever get into quilting, this would be the brick and mortar I would frequent. I would even drive from Marin if my mother didn't live in Lafayette -- it's that good. read more

I am thrilled to have finally found an official bernina dealer. my bernina is in need of some lovin' so i will definitely be coming back to drop off my machine for a tune-up. the shop is small, but they have many bolts crammed in there as well as a great selection of solids and printed flannels. i was able to find a print in the amy butler, kaffe fassett, anna maria horner section that i had never seen before, which made my day. they have a decent amount of notions and of course bernina machines....my favorite. the ladies were pleasant and helpful. as far as all the bay area quilt shops i've visited so far, this one has been the most personable and friendly. overall, it was a good shopping experience. read more

Wouldn't recommend for vintage Bernina repairs - I brought an older Bernina in for service in November, got a few phone calls from the repair tech saying that it was frozen up, she was calling bernina for advice but wasn't hopeful. In January she called letting me know the machine was not repairable and that I could probably sell it for parts. I did just that but asked the woman who purchased it to let me know if she was able to repair it. She was not a sewing machine tech but played with machines for fun on the weekends. She repaired it in a week and let me know the fix was simple, and that the Cotton Patch had been dishonest/inept. Won't be taking any older berninas there anytime soon. read more

This place is amazing - chock full of fantastic fabrics in every color and pattern you can imagine. They have a very large selection of batiks and japanese prints. Just about everything I saw was $10.99/yard. They also sell half yard and quarter yard pieces and discount ends of the bolt. The staff are incredibly knowledgable and friendly but will also just let you wander around in a daze. They also have a zillon colors of thread and sell Bernina sewing machines. It was a little hard to find - coming from Mt. Diablo Blvd., its about halfway up the street on the left. read more

I am so excited and happy. I met Carol lee at Asilomar and she told me about her tech's. I brought my Bernina 830E to the Cotton Patch Lafayette to replace a broken clip, get the new spring for the BSR and also get the new thread cutter to perfect the needle threader. Because it was so far away from Santa Cruz, I was able to talk to the tech and make an appointment to get the work done. Not only was the work done perfectly, but they honored the warrantee parts of the machine and charged me a more then fair price for labor. I also got to walk around at the Cotton Patch and see some really neat stuff and talk to the cracker-jack staff. It is not hard to see why this store has been open for 35 years. I'm not a quilter, but I have a Bernina sewing machine, for which it can be hard to find a repairperson. Chris at the Cotton Patch is a Bernina technician par excellence. A few months ago, a friend & I had our machines tuned up by Chris. We found him to be quite competent, friendly, & communicative. Last week, my foot pedal disintegrated, & once more Chris came through. He sold me a used pedal at an excellent price--& because I had come from San Francisco, he took care of me right away so that I wouldn't have to return. They are not a discount retailer, but will have wonderful fabric options you won't find everywhere else. Great great option for those in Lamorinda who'd prefer to stay local and skip the freeway! I was stunned to find a fabric store just like in the olden days when they began, 39 years ago. Lots of fabric of all kinds, relatively expensive....I never would have paid $7+ for a spool of ordinary thread except the place is very cramped and I couldn't see the prices on everything. They were having a show of quilts off-premises that day, so I was really a nuisance and put off by the fact that no one knew what yarn-dyed fabric was or if they had any. Also put off by the fact that the bolt was marked with 2 prices, $2 apart, and of course i was charged the higher price. It's the best quilting/fabric store in Northern CA, always has a beautiful variety of fabrics, including all the books and tools you'll ever need, and wonderful salespeople to assist you. My sewing maching stopped stitching properly, so I took it to the Cotton Patch to be adjusted and tuned. After 3 weeks, they said that the belt cover was cracked, and there were internal cracks. They said it couldn't be repaired, but they would give me $100. for it. Took it to another shop. They said the Cotton Patch had altered the parts in my machine, so it would not sew. Found out it's valuable. The 2nd shop readjusted the parts, adjusted the tension, and did a full service tune up. They said there were no cracks. The machine works fine. I wouldn't recommend anyone taking their machine to the Cotton Patch for repairs. read more

My husband and I visited The Cotton Patch on Friday 10-8-10. I was very excited because my dentist recommended this store as one of the best fabric stores to buy unique fabrics. When we walked into the quaint little store we were met by a grimacing woman who immediately asked us what we were looking for. We explained we just wanted to look around a little and if we had questions we would let her know. This woman proceeded to follow us around the store and ask us repeatedly what we were looking for. After about 5 minutes of this we were so uncomfortable we just left the store without looking at much of anything. Oh, and did I mention we are people of color? This was a very traumatic experience for us both. Never have we ever had such an overtly discriminatory experience. I grew up going to this place and I'll always have some fondness for it. There is some great fabric here and it is well organized but the Cotton Patch tends to focus on telling clients what they need (ie: using kits or fabric all from one designer). I agree that this may be alright for beginners and that it is definately good for business (creating mindsets where creativity is dependant on having certain supplies as opposed to finding creative solutions for problems DEFINATELY keeps their business going) but I'd rather spend my time and money elsewhere. I'm surprised by the favorable reviews! While its true, the fabrics are lovely and the staff are helpful and sweet, this place is EXPENSIVE. The average fabric seems to be $13 a yard, with simple twill at almost $20 a yard. I tried buying a spool of invisible thread and the one spool was $9! They offer several classes that are more reasonably priced, but the majority of them are held in the middle of the day on weekdays. I'm not sure who this store is for. Wealthy people who do not work? Super disappointed as I want very much to support my local businesses but I'll be sticking with Stone Mt. in Berkeley and other Berkeley/Oakland shops. read more
