I had surgery at the Mayo Clinic Hospital, for a condition that has caused me issues for over a decade. After months of consulting and scheduling, it was time for my surgery. From a patient perspective, everything was very smooth. Check in was quick and organized, and they pointed me right where to go. I got taken back for prep within about fifteen minutes. Prep itself took about two hours before it was show time. During that time I did intake with the nursing staff, met with the anesthesiologist and a pharmacist, and eventually talked to the surgical team directly. When it was time to go, my bed was wheeled to the operating room, where the staff had a very upbeat attitude that quickly put me at ease. Anesthesia is sort of like time travel, you just wake up finished as if you'd just closed your eyes. When I was coming around, they got me situated in recover after my seven hour surgery. When I was ready they wheeled me to my room where I spent one night. Every single person I interacted with was so wonderful and kind; Truly I have no regrets with choosing this team to handle my care. I've seen other hospitals where the attitude of the staff can project onto the patients, and I saw none of that here. Never once did I feel like a bother, and never once did I not get the care I needed. And I'm healing up nicely! read more

I was very disappointed with the Mayo Clinic! After being referred by two different doctors in the Twin Cities for a very rare disease, I was accepted as a patient with Dr. Joseph Butterfield. Dr. Butterfield's reviews rank him at a 2.6. All of my Twin Cities doctors are at least 4.8. These ratings I have found pretty accurately reflect competency and patient interactions. Dr. Butterfield was rude, dismissive, unresponsive to questions, and actually stopped communicating when I asked questions. I went to Patient Experience at the Mayo Clinic and requested a different doctor but was denied and there was no follow up. I did find much more competent doctors in the Twin Cities who have been able to treat my rare disease. read more

Mayo Clinic is great. Everything you could possibly need in the way of tests is right there. No making appointments weeks apart to see other doctors (like I have to at home) Doctors, Physician Assistants, Nurses & staff are all wonderful. I feel I get the BEST care here. read more

The ER has been problematic for my family because it allows inexperienced, arrogant, sloppy residents to see patients without supervision. Most times we've chosen to go to the Mayo ER at St. Mary's because it's closest, we've had to go elsewhere to get what they screwed up fixed, because the poor work they did or the steps they skipped were harmful to us. The attending physicians seem to "supervise" from outside the exam room, going along with whatever the resident says. That's a major weakness in the Mayo ER and the hospital as a whole. Yet it's nearly impossible to correct erroneous records made to avoid having to redo what they screwed up. read more

If I could leave this place 0 stars I would. Mayo makes billions in $ by screwing over there patients. The doctors kept asking me if I wanted to run a test. I kept saying no. A year later I went in for a follow up again they kept pushing it. They never told me how much it would cost or that insurance wouldn't cover it. I finally caved and did the test. The results came back inconclusive and now im out $1,200 for a test I didn't want in the first place. They just push and push so the hospital can keep making more money which is funny because they are supposed to be nonprofit but can afford a multi billion $ expansion. Not hard to see how they can afford that. read more

Patient received genetically, metabolically and enzymatically contraindicated medications (straight from the 'allergy' list) that cannot be processed by the body under any circumstances during a "routine" bronchoscopy, despite protestations that they were strictly contraindicated, and was put into respiratory arrest on the operating table, requiring the use of an emergency cuffed wire spiral endotracheal tube to save patient's life. Then they lied about it in the chart to cover their backsides, calling respiratory arrest "apnea" and rescue intubation "being masked for a few minutes". You don't get intubated for apnea. You get intubated in an emergency. Mayo cares more about their "success metrics" than they do their actual patients. The three Doctors Mayo must be rolling in their graves to see what has become of their legacy. Do yourself a favor: go the anti-Mayo, which is what Cleveland Clinic has become. They're fixing Mayo's mistakes. read more

My son was assaulted March 8th and came to the ED in extreme pain and bleeding . He was checked over given a tetanus shot and some pain killers and let go. You could see by looking at him he had something definitely wrong with his jaw. I am in the medical field and if someone comes in assaulted , bleeding, tooth hanging out we never send them home with out doing a C T or at least an x ray. He easily could have died in his sleep from a brain bleed . He later went to an emergency orthodontist in Minnesota where they took an x Ray and told him he needed to go to a trauma hospital which is then where his friend drove him to. They did a CT and found 5 fractures and 2 compound fractures . Regions trauma hospital. He had surgery that night and the Dr said he's lucky he did not wait any longer. So your doctor told him with his tooth hanging out and jaw deformed to go home and see a dentist Monday???? Also bleeding . Seriously not ok. I suffer from a rare illness called a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak. I've been to 4 other hospitals for treatment and after 4 years of unrelenting pain, I decided to seek help at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. While I continue to undergo imaging, I find the Mayo Clinic to be one of the very best hospitals. Most medical facilities will provide you with one physician per specialty. However, Mayo will collaborate with an entire team of the same specialty, as well as other needed physicians to diagnose and treat. This, among their continual research and learning, is what sets them apart. I feel confident knowing I have so many experienced doctors working on my case. We may not have a "Dr. Gregory House" but this is the next best thing. Staff is excellent and the facility is spotless. read more

Mayo Rochester is a hot mess. I would suspect any good reviews in here are fake. Mayo eventually will fold like a house of cards. DO NOT GO TO THE MAYO. READ YELP AND BBB REVIEWS!! I had a "seed" placement biopsy at the Radiology Depart, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. This was to place a marker where my surgery was to take place, for an excisional biopsy (which turned out negative for malignancy and no pre-cancer). My St Paul surgeon said the radial scar was small and needed no further evaluation, but Mayo said I needed surgery. A woman escorted me from the wait area to the procedure room and said "there will be student witnesses" in the procedure. I adamantly told her NO I DO NOT WANT STUDENT WITNESSES in there. It adds extreme stress to have unnecessary people "watching". She disregarded my wishes and two females were allowed to stay. The procedure was done incorrectly and had to be done from the beginning. The doctor used the wrong sized biopsy needle. This was excruciating and more traumatic by these two witnesses watching me unclothed in a vulnerable situation. This created a PTSD for me. Radiology did not acknowledge my privacy violation. In fact they sent me a letter about my anger outbursts during the procedure. I was HYSTERICAL and livid FROM THE BLATANT DISREGARD TO MY RIGHT TO PRIVACY, and then compounded by the doctor admitting she used the WRONG needle. I had to have a 2nd painful shot of a novacaine medicine inserted deeply into my breast and 17 additional x-rays taken of my breast - which was BLEEDING profusely. I was sobbing and a 2nd doctor came in to take over. I begged her "please don't leave me!" She finished the botched procedure. I feel a PTSD and deeply violated from this debacle. The depart that took my complaint said they these "witnesses" were there to aid in the procedure. This is COMPLETELY UNTRUE. They did not aid in the procedure in ANY capacity. I am terrified the excessive X-rays could cause breast cancer but the Radiology Depart dismissed me. I have serious doubts that this small radial scar needed to be surgically removed bcuz it was the inept Radiology Depart that promoted it. read more

I had put in 3 personal referral in the last year. I have been dealing with some major health care issues that after 6 plus years no one could put their finger on the problem. So, I have had some acquaintances who have go e up to the hospital and had good luck. So I wanted to give it a try. Two my requests were denied due to they didn't have a space for me. That was 2023.3rd admission was 6 weeks ago. Still no word. That's ok, my body decided to finally tell me why I was so excruciatingly tired and brain fog. After what I've read from others I'm sure they wouldn't have done any better then docs did for me in sfsd. I had a heart attack. So, if you can get in there. More power too you. Vascular IR Dr (Dr N) has not completely read thru a chart of a new pt and scheduled a procedure on a patient when it is not clinically needed. Pt is manipulating yet another Dr. If this Dr would stop and think -how has this pt maintained weight and had normal labs for the last 9 months she would realize the patient can eat. Doesn't take a rocket scientist. Also, pt has been diagnosed with fictitious disorder by psychiatrist and contaminated her lines with fecal matter. Patient got what she WANTED NOT NEEDED. I am not impressed with the Mayo Clinic in Rochester the surgeon was rude and I had to take my wife back for surgery on her arm. We took her to Duluth and the surgeon had to take the rest of the rib out and put three balloons in her arm to reinforce the vein and cut some scar tissue off her muscle because of the rib rubbing against it. read more

Dr. Peter Gay in the sleep medicine center is top notch. My dad has a rare illness that was stumping all the other doctors he had seen. Dr. Gay recognized this in him and treated the symptoms that he could, then sent my dad to an amazing neurologist. Dr. James Bower in neurology is also top notch. I have nothing bad to say about the Mayo Clinic but in my eyes these were the two shining stars that helped my dad when he needed it the most. I was see a few days ago by a cardiologist and gastroenterologist. I LOVE BOTH AND STAFF! EVERY PERSON I came in contact with was kind, caring, and you can tell they care and love their jobs. Not once was I rushed. Everything was clearly explained. Test were ordered and done quickly, no long waits. I can't say enough. Coming there from Missouri probably saved my life. I interviewed with Mayo in early 2024. Let me tell you they are world class but the passiveness is between the lines. I can in as formal as anyone would dress shoes, button up I tie etc. the white gentleman at the front desk after getting checked in through Covid which were very nice, the gentleman at the front desk ignored me before I had to ask for a third time excuse me as he was stacking some papers. He still didn't look my way. He then turns slowly and sighs and still doesn't look at me and asks "what you want?" I'm like I'm looking for this department and he's like okay? What's the name? I told them the name, he's like hang out here and I'll call someone. He called and his attitude changed he's like, "oh are you here for an interview?" I'm like yeah he's like "oh they're coming to get you I hope you do great!" I'm like thank you but I was already not impressed. I interview and let me tell you they are as white as the whiteboards around that office. This one guy who was acting tough lied through his teeth about a clinical simulation. I specified clearly what 3 details were and he even asked after the scenario if I was sure. I was literally my best and if I graded myself it would have been a 70% mind you. I'm a new grad, I caught their attention somehow and they showed interest until they saw me. As a Latino I felt it again. Anywhere and everywhere, no matter what I do and my reputation of a clean civil citizen, no matter the travel to half way across the country to get an opportunity with a hospital they'll still shut me down. The worst part was the call I got about their decision. The director told me that they met me and they drew concerns about how I didn't do certain details. When I clearly emphasized I did. They were acting snobby and jerk like as if they were nurses. Of course that's the simulation right? But were they perking their ears? I was calm to the touch. And I don't think they liked that. They want to see humble individuals where they freak out where people feel like okay they know nothing we can teach them OUR way. I was so sad about the call I didn't even fight it. I knew that was a lie. They couldn't just say I wasn't fit for it due to my lack of experience? But the specific details that I made clear really shows me how racist and corrupt they are. EVERYONE IS WHITE. Imagine my brown self walking amongst them? That's crazy! Screw mayo they showed me exactly what they're made of they only have protocols made by doctors to follow they don't have real talent they're just like the previous hospital I was at. They don't care have equipment is supposed to be set up, they don't care about the effects of drugs they cause on patients, they're cookie cutters. Can't think for themselves. They can't tell you how the heart works, they cells, the hemodynamic imbalance the, medications countering diagnosis affects. Thank You Mayo for opening my eyes to reality. Unless you know someone you're in, unless I'm white im in. I dismissed the rumors heading to Minnesota but I should have listened instead of being myself. Excellent care. Medical treatment is far beyond anything you get outside the Mayo system. Top quality Doctors and Nurses. In a lot of cases they give you a team to work with. My son has seen multiple specialists for ongoing intermittent chest pain so we were referred to the cardiology department. We knew there was nothing wrong with his heart yet, we were recommended the cardiology department. We were told they would recommend other departments if they couldn't figure it out and that didn't happen. He told my son to put on topical cream to help his chest pain. We drove 5 hours to get that advice. Horrible! read more

Dr. and staffs are very kind. Everything seems very much organized. They work so quickly and try not to waste of time for people. I think it is very good hospitality and caring point as a hospital . Hospital is excellent ! But cafeteria was disappointing. They sell older food. I bought sushi pack ( raw fish) .They put the sticker " Sell by 10/25" but under this sticker there was another sticker " Sell by 10/24" . Raw fish is important to be fresh. So, people in cafeteria need to know about it. Depends on the old fish, someone may have stomach ache. read more

Everything about this place is 5 star, except the overall administration which is NOT physician run, but Accountant - Business Software run. The original Mayo Brothers grew a kind of Giant Redwood of a medical mission, and there is life yet to that glorious being, BUT there is a disease in the heart of this tree - physicians are dis-empowered. Computerized Business Administration with no heart, no imagination, and NO notion of what Medicine was and is to physicians who are the like of those original Mayo Brothers. Very impressive care and service all the way around. The Mayo Clinic of all areas were awesome no matter what building I went to for a test. There is a team of doctors and RNs that talk to you, not just one. If you have a serious neurological problem such as epilepsy, the Mayo Clinic will give you answers. I now know things about my condition that past neurologists didn't diagnose. I am not finished with testing, but if you can be lucky enough to go to the Mayo the team of knowledge, care, and technology is impressive. read more

Took my father to the ER after a fall that caused a really nasty head laceration. Went in around 5 am on a Sunday and was taken back immediately. From beginning to end the experience was very pleasant. The nurses came right in and started IV's and an EKG, and saw a doctor within 10 min of arriving. They ordered a head CT that they got the results of that in less than 10 minutes of him going in. Not being from around here, and used to our hospital at home, I was extremely impressed. They killed our father - He died while in recovery from an infection he contracted while under the knife, one of those infections you can only get in a hospital. We had an autopsy done which proves this. Now they are demanding we pay his outstanding medical bill or they'll send it to collections! We threatened legal action and they don't care in the least. They didn't lift one finger to try to save his life in their "care" in an unclean and unsanitary facility that runs rampant with deadly infections only found in hospitals. I hope any reading this takes it to heart and thinks twice before leaving their loved one at a place named after a condiment, whose staff are uncompassionate, uncaring, ill-trained, and engage routinely in malpractice! read more

If you have cancer PLEASE go to MD Anderson NOT Mayo Clinic! I've been to Mayo and MD Anderson and the difference is night and day! MD Anderson will save your life. In addition, Mayo won't assist with insurance and in fact, they actually BLOCK you from submitting proper paperwork to your insurance. Unbelievable FACT: Mayo stated they received a precertification for a test but then later my insurance denied the claim stating no precert was done! I called Mayo to ask for proof / a reference number or something and they said "oops" they said, "I can see that a note was started about a precert but the information didn't SAVE properly in our system so we don't cannot find the authorization number".....THEN I called and got FURTHER instruction from my insurance company to do a RETRO-cert so that Mayo could get paid but MAYO wont submit a retro cert! WHY? Because "its not my department", .....Nobody in any department will help you! I even called the complaints dept (844-544-0036) to tell them that i am frustrated that every dept states "its not my job, its not our policy, and they refuse to call you back to close the loop because...." that's not how we do things" and guess what! The complaints dept said, "Oh, insurance complaints ....thats not our department....I'll forward your complaint and ..."no....we won't call you back to let you know what is happening with this, either". ....really? read more

No thank you. You'd think a patient would get the world class care the Mayo Clinic is famous for. While the building is gorgeous and very clean, that's the best thing I can say about it. Doctors would show up in my room with others (presumably residents) and not tell me who the other people were. The nurses were "fake nice" and when I experienced some issues related to surgery in general rather than my illness, the doctor actually said "Well at least we don't have to .. Mayo clinic has two hospitals: Rochester Methodist and St Mary's. St Mary's is their original famous hospital created by the Catholic nuns revered and deeply loved still today. Our family has had surgeries at both institutions but we are partial to St Mary's, yes older but filled across the board with the very finest nurses we have ever experienced -- over Mass General Brigham Williams Memorial Sloan Kettering New York Hospital Scripts Hospital Medical College of Va, Johns Hopkins. The building like all other Mayo buildings is spotless odor free The most beautiful feature is the startlingly magnificent full detailed cathedral / chapel placed at the very heart of the building . It provides unsurpassed comfort solace and peace. Their emergency room is the largest and best with a helicopter port on the roof. In 2005 while walking the dogs in early March on light new snow atop solid ice, my husband fell backwards and sustained a horrifying level 3 fracture between his leg and foot. I drove him, midnight to U of Mn ER. 6 hours later in a temp cast he came home, but being a Friday no Appts could be found in the Twin Cities with an orthopedist to set the fracture. My Mayo foot surgeon told me to drive him down to St Mary's ER w records. From entering the door till fully hooked up prepped in bed it took JUST 2 hours! He was placed in traction a full week waiting for the massive swelling to go down so they cd do surgery! He was not allowed to place any pressure at all on that leg for 3 months. after recovery he played squash once again ! read more

My sister was quite ill and went to the mayo clinic. They told her it was all in her head and to go home to Michigan and find a psychiatrist. She died about a year and a half later from It. If they had diagnosed it and began treatment she may have survived. She definitely would've lived longer. Before her passing, she testified before The US Congress about the illness as it was beginning to be understood. Mayo clinic refused to acknowledge that the heavy metals in breast implants could kill you without treatment. She was a wonderful physician and it was a great loss to her family and to the community when she passed away because of mayo clinic's refusal to do testing or even acknowledge her illness. Disappointed..........made an appointment-I had to wait two and half months for my appointment. The person who made my appointment said I could call weekly and see if they had cancellations to come in sooner. The first time I called the woman I spoke to was not very nice about me checking for a cancellation. I tried to ask her about hotels near by and her response was that were many near the hospital. I drove up the night before my appointment since I was three and half hours away. I had been told by many people how great they were about scheduling numerous appointments while you were there. Day 1 I had three and was done mid afternoon. Day 2 no appointments. Day 3 two very early in the morning. The tests that I really needed they did not have space to schedule me. The nurse scheduled appointments on multiple different days( days apart from each other) even after I explained I have to drive three and half hours for each of those appointments. Finally they res chilled them all the same day so I didn't have to make multiple trips up there or pay for hotel rooms for days and days of non appointments. read more

they gave the best treatment i've ever experienced. i was there for 3 days the nurses were the very best always asking how they could help or what they could get me . i had a team of 5 doctors examine me and prescribe my care. even when the floor i was on was full they made me feel like i was the only patient. even the food was good. there is no doubt why they are #1 in the usa. i have to give a special thanks to rebecca and kristen on floor 2 they really went above and beyond for me ,even took care of my wife who was with me. read more

Apparently, they are not interested in taking on something that does not get them world headlines. What a huge disappointment. My Mom went to the ER with severe pain and nausea, it took 4.5 hours to be seen. My Mom was 80 years old and it was clear to us that they were seeing younger patients who came in well after we checked in and their conditions were fair, hers was not. She was so cold and was not even offered a blanket, I snuck in the back to get her one. She finally sees an ER doctor who talked her into going home, even though we couldn't control her pain at home. It took them forever to diagnose her with ureter cancer stage 3 several weeks later. She was later hospitalized, they didn't control her pain. I had to get on them to help her continually, it was painful to watch her beg for help, it took 4 hours to get pain meds. This is unacceptable with someone with cancer! Then they kept trying to kick her out of the hospital. I have been reflecting on this, they only wanted success stories at The Mayo and I now wonder and truly think they purposely try to weed out Medicare patients and people who bring their success numbers down. I won't recommend them to anyone! My Mom passed away weeks later, I helped her with hospice at home, I miss her dearly. read more
