Burlap sacks. We were on the hunt for burlap sacks. No, we weren't about to kidnap someone...we wanted to make curtains. I know, I know. It sounds so bizarre, but believe me, this was one of my husband's more brilliant ideas. We've been conflicted about what to do with the home office. It was in desperate need of curtains, but we couldn't decide on a fabric/pattern/style. Suddenly, out of the blue, he shouts out "burlap coffee bags! Roman shade!" and we both started squealing like little girls at a Justin Bieber concert. Yes, this is what the lack of alcohol combined with homeownership has done to me. Fear, my children...fear. Obviously, we turned to the internet to find old coffee burlap sacks (generally $5 - $10 per bag), but we really wanted to see them in person before buying, when my husband remembered that there was the Mayorga roasting facility in the industrial complex off of Southlawn. We head over here on a Saturday, and the nice lady that was working the counter, offered us some free coffee, and when we mentioned burlap sacks, she took us into the factory side, and let us pick out as many as we wanted - free of charge! WOOHOO! We sorted through the bags, found about 8 of them (we'll probably only need 4, but I like backups), and bought a bag of actual roasted coffee (we felt silly not giving her *any* money). After living in the Pacific Northwest, which is the land of hard-core fine coffees, I have been happy to find a few local roasters who are bringing fair trade coffee and cafe craftsmanship to the developing suburban DC culinary wasteland. I found Mayorga roastery by driving past but apparently there really is no secret to this little Rockville gem because I wasn't the only customer. The roastery sells to the public Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. The coffee is fresh and excellent and the roaster was knowledgeable, laid back, and friendly while I interrogated him on all the different beans. I limited myself to three bags of beans that I have not seen in the grocery store. They sell the "regular" bags you are used to seeing in the store as well as 2-lb bags. I kept telling myself, "They are just right here in Rockville, I can return," which is how I kept myself limited to three bags. The roaster told me that they they are moving not too far this spring and will have a viewing area for customers to observe the coffee roasting, which should be fun. There are several roasts of beans available that can be hard to find. Who knew the Galapagos grows coffee? Not my brother from Seattle. Hah! Also, the coffee bean industry in general is shockingly brutal to the farmers, so I feel compelled to support roasters who make the effort to obtain fair trade, organic beans. If you care about the farmers who struggle to make quality coffee and if you want delicious, really fresh roasted beans, then you will be happy you stopped for a visit. This is not the place for you if you love Dunkin Donuts coffee or if you are looking for cheap coffee. read more

I just tried their medium roast pour over from El Salvador that they offered for free today and it is one of the best cups of coffee I've ever had. Staff here is super friendly and I love their mission and their products! They offer classes as well so that you can master your coffee at home! Definitely pay this place a visit if you love coffee- you won't regret it. read more

We even went through a tour of the roastery. But today when we went, Fatima was the most rude and unwelcoming person I've ever met in the customer service world. Great place if you are lactose intolerant. Apparently, the owners kid is allergic to milk products. Bring your own creamer if you use it. There will only be soy milk, or coconut milk on the premises. For a customer based business not so accomodating. Coffee prices way too high. You're better off going on Amazon.com. read more

I pulled into the parking lot to grab some coffee but was too late; they'd already closed. I was really bummed, and as I turned to walk back to my car, a guy named Elvis greeted me at the door and welcomed me and my husband inside. Not only did he prepare us two cups of fresh coffee, but he was so knowledgeable about everything: he gave us the history of the company, a rundown of their beans, and some very good advice for how to make coffee at home. What an awesome place with fantastic coffee. I happened to be in the area to get some work done on my car and found this close by on google, popped in and Elvis was the roaster/barista on duty. Dude dropped serious coffee knowledge! Showed me a quick tour of the giant roasting/bagging floor (so cool) and picked out a great bag that I took home, not to mention made a great pour over. Will definitely look to pick up some more at Whole Foods or Giant, wherever I can find them in DC. read more

This a wonderfully set-up coffee warehouse/roaster/shop all in one. A large variety of beans, including unroasted beans, are offered for sale by the bag, in addition to by the cup in all brew methods. The staff are knowledgeable, transparent, very helpful, and obviously proud and excited about their business and customers. I bought Colombia Santa Maria by the bag, and had a cup of Peru Amazonas. Both are light roast and do carry the typical light roast profiles in that way. I'm excited to go back to try another coffee when I finish the bag I bought, maybe something more on the medium side. We passed this place so many times but we never knew you could actually try their coffee. Like many, we just thought it was a coffee processing factory and that's it. Just few minutes ago we walked in and ordered a cappuccino and a cold coffee. Eduardo was so friendly and helpful taking our order. He let my wife sample the cold coffee, with choice of soy or almond milk. It was so delicious. He asked her to add some sugar to a small cup so he could make a syrup which would dissolve better in the cold coffee. After a few tries, we got it to the right taste for her. The made to order coffee is delicious, and the huge window into the roasting and packing operation is fascinating. I have roasted my own coffee on a few occasions, purchased coffee for several coffee clubs I have started (20-25 lbs/month at the high point). This place has some of the better coffee I have tasted and surprisingly it is reasonably priced. I really like the Columbian and believe some of their darker roasts get a little too bitter....and I don't mind dark roasts. If you haven't tried their coffee, give it a try. read more

I visit Mayorga last Sunday for the very first time. I was looking for a good cup of coffee. The Coffee place was pack of people but the Jill the Barista was so kind with everyone even when they was asking for drinks and bag of coffee, she managed the rush pretty good, efficient and smiley. I order a Cortado Breve (Jill suggestion and she explain the meaning too) after I want to brought a bag of coffee for my home, she walk to shelf with me and start asking a lot of question. Mayorga Organics is a hidden gem! The building is very large and can obscure the customer entrance, but the inside consists of a comfortable seating/cafe area with a nice view of the factory. Stopped in this morning for a couple of cortados. The young man at the counter was very knowledgeable about the company and the product and makes a mean cup of coffee. No exaggeration- easily the best espresso beverage I've had in Montgomery county. Really, really delicious stuff.
