Watch out when ordering a kid's meal! Even when pointing to the kid's meal on the menu as I ordered my child's meal, I was still charged the adult price. When I questioned this when I was checking out, the manager apologized for his mistake in misunderstanding what I was ordering but then STILL charged me the adult price! I think they make it up as they go. It was a difference of $10 between both of my kids because they were charged for an adult meal. Garlicky for Gringos Had a bad run with Mexican food lately... This place definitely caters to diners unfamiliar with real Mexican cuisine. The salsa was stewed tomatoes blended with WAY too much garlic- that's it! No onion, cilantro, or jalepeño. Did two chips worth and tapped out. Some of the worst salsa I can remember; tastes like something you'd get in an MRE. The fajitas Tejanas were "OK", shrimp were nicely cooked (not overdone) but the steak, chicken, and veg were bland and greasy. Guac was pasty and getting dark. The refried beans - yep, too garlicky. The accompanying torts (I asked for corn) were good; traditional in that they were heated on a plancha rather than being nuked. Half a fresh jalapeño sliced and tossed into a small dish was $1.25- ridiculous! Their stellar offering was the margarita- super tasty as it was not cloyingly sweet. We are from California, have had delicious Mexican food there and in Mexico. The food at this restuarant rates tops on our list. The chips were fresh and crispy. We could have used more hot sauce in the salsa it was mild. My husband had chicken mole and I ordered the special dinner plate. Both were absolutely delicious. My husband is a great chef himself and very picky and he loved it. The deep fried ice cream a perfect end to a very flavorful, fresh tasting meal. The staff very cordial and attentive to our needs. Best dinner yet so far on our trip East. I would definitely eat there regularly if I were a local. read more

Driving through the state, we decided to stop for some Mexican food. We ordered tacos and we got flavorless meat in tortillas. Cilantro and onions were nonexistent and even when we asked for them, we got pico de gallo. I have been to Mazatlan and this is not the quality of food you would find there. It's a beautiful place but the waitresses was not inviting, she made me feel like I didn't belong in the restaurant I was sitting for 15 minutes before another family came in. She was so into them that she taken there orders first they food came out before she ask me my I take your order so I gave her my order after shortly after waiting a little bit longer is when I told her I would like to take it to go. I was headed back home after a day in Cary and decided to stop somewhere for a bite. I check yelp and was hoping to find something around that had at least 3 stars. I saw this place had 4.5 and decided i'd check it out to make sure it wasn't a fluke. Boy was I pleasantly surprised. The place is connected to a small hotel and reminded me of something you would find in Mexico. It wasn't fancy, but it was pleasantly and appropriately kitschy. The food was delicious, I think the salsa wasn't as good/fresh as you would find in mexico but it had a nice heat and reminded me of a few places i've eaten in Texas. The queso was delicious, creamy, and it actually thickened up as it got colder so it had to be mostly cheese. I figured i'd keep it simple so I ordered a chimichanga. I kinda wish that I had been more adventurous and ordered one of the specials. Don't get me wrong, it was great, but I figured if a chimichanga was that good, then the specials had to be amazing. I asked for black beans instead of refried and they gladly make the substitution. The shreded beef had so much flavor and was still very juicy. I'm not an expert on beans, but I am fairly certain they were made in house and didn't come from a can. They weren't mushy at all and had an amazing flavor. The service was decent, my server was attentive and the owner stopped by a few times to take plates away and get me a refill. If you're passing through Henderson, this is the place to fill up your hungry spot. read more

It's in a very odd location - located in the front of a fairly old Days Inn tucked between a huge Toyota dealership and a Cracker Barrel. When we entered the restaurant, it was noteworthy that the place was packed. The menu was a bit daunting (as all Mexican restaurant menus tend to be at first glance). I went with the Mazatlan house specials page, though - and ordered the Rio Burrito. It was FREAKIN' AWESOME. Yummy beef tips, chicken, shrimp, green and red bell peppers, and onions, doused with a healthy portion of spicy green chili sauce and served with a side of rice and "salad" (lettuce topped with sour cream and guacamole). Once I ordered only churros y cerveza and they apparently thought I was joking. Delicious, fast and impressive service. We found the restaurant on Yelp and saw the mixed reviews but decided to give it a try. We are foodies and have spent time in Mexico and Central America as well as eaten a lot of authentic Mexican food in Austin, Texas. We ordered the fajitas with chicken and beef and it came in about 5 minutes from when we ordered. We also got a side of the house made green chile sauce for an extra dollar - totally worth it. Service was wonderful, food was delicious, and the ambience was totally average but our bill came out to $16 so no complaints here! Would certainly come back if we were in the area. read more

My first and last experience with this restaurant was so disappointing. I was picking up a to go order of ACP chicken. While waiting for food I noticed several signs about checking your order before you leave not responsible for anything missing once you leave. When my food came out, I decided to check over my order and boy oh boy I couldn't believe my eyes!!!!! When speaking with the employee and expressing my disappointment in this to go order she could have cared less. I asked where was the cheese that should've been on top of the dish, she stated that extra cheese was a $1.47. I walked out at point because I felt my temperature rising. And this will sound petty, but they brought chips and salsa like any Mexican restaurant, but charged for them when we checked out. Based on Yelp reviews, we stopped here on the way back from Virginia from visiting family. BIG mistake. The food here is truly horrible. We live in the city and can choose from all kinds of Mexican: Tex-Mex, Cal-Mex, New Mexican, and authentic Mexican. This was none of that. Everything had a weird "off" flavor, as if they added dish water to it. The salsa tasted like old jarred stuff, not fresh made. I could go on and on, but bottom line is we told the waitress we could not eat the food and would be leaving. We waited until she reported this to the manager, who didn't seem surprised in the least, and he gave us an "ok" wave, we left a tip, and we were on our way. Avoid this place. read more

Visited Mazatlan after a friend told me they had great food. Part of me was thinking...how good can Mexican food be in Henderson of all places but I will admit I was wrong. Not only did Mazatlan have great food but the service was excellent as well. I ordered the chimichanga with rice and a side of refried beans (beans didn't come with the meal). Since moving to Henderson seven weeks ago, Mazatlan has become our favorite Mexican food restaurant. Having grown up in New Mexico and spending 24 years in West Texas, I have to have my Mexican food. Tonight I had the combination #7, a chile relleno, beef enchilada, rice and beans. So far, this is my favorite on the menu. The enchilada sauce was delicious. The relleno has ground beef and cheese which is how I like them. I have liked everything I have eaten at Mazatlan. I try to try different things each week. The margaritas are huge! The regular is plenty big and the large would serve four. I don't know why so many restaurants in Henderson don't provide a totaled tab at the table. Mazatlan provides the ticket with what was ordered, but no prices. The cashier adds the prices and gives you a total. It makes figuring the tip difficult. read more

This is your go to Mexican restaurant in the area. The owner is very nice and remembers 90% of his customers and has conversations with them. Even though the food is great, I would not recommend getting take out from here. First, the cheese dip is amazing but when getting it to go, it comes in a tiny container for the same price as you would pay if you sat down and ate. They also charge a .25 fee for EVERY item you get to go. I assume to handle the costs of the to go packaging. But really!? If you order 3 tacos and a side of beans you get charged .25 4 times just for that. Tip:Don't Oder separately, just get a combination lunch/dinner. I have also caught one of the waitresses on numerous accounts throwing in random charges both on take out and eat in. While it's normally $1, I had an incident where a meal that was supposed to be $15 plus tax ended up being over $25. I confronted her about it asking her what she rang up because that wasn't right and she got an attitude and said "I'll fix it". It knocked down to $18 when she redid it. So watch them when they are ringing stuff up. That wasn't the first and won't be the last time she's done it to me personally. read more

Local place that has been mentioned by friends. Decor is old & worn out. Carpets stained, seats cracked, tables peeled Formica on the edges. Menu is big, prices are cheap, but so is food quality. Ordered mushroom & spinach enchiladas. They came as 2 mushroom & 2 spinach, separate. It was clear the food was precooked, probably canned. How hard can it be to put mushrooms & spinach in a pan and sauté it together. Waitress very nice, took it back. Vegetarian taco salad was not even 1/2 filling the shell. Guacamole not present. Few veggies on the bottom? Under the lettuce. Asked for refill on water. Waitress took the glass I had been drinking from to the back fountain to fill. A clear health code violation. We were seated in a room where a party was going on. Probably 20 adults & children. Noisy. There were plenty of seats that would have given them their space and us a quiet environment. read more

Mazatlan restaurant has excellent, authentic Mexican food. I had the LARGE juicy, chicken tamales which were all white meat, fresh, not frozen -delicious! My husband had large, shredded beef enchiladas, he said his were the best he has had in years. We have lived in Austin/Houston for many years and know homemade, fresh food made with fresh spices when we taste it. Salad was also very fresh. The hostess and waitstaff were happy and professional, proud of their food. The manager, Saul Tavares was wonderful and made sure we were delighted with our meal; he was also kind and patient with me as I practiced my rusty Spanish! I read the reviews and was expecting much better. First of all, it's a little creepy that the attached hotel has been condemned. Secondly, the two ladies who were working that night -- the hostess and waitress -- were both very unfriendly and borderline hostile. I ordered the carnitas and they were so tough they were barely edible with a very strong, gamey flavor. I sent them back and ordered two tacos. They reminded me of what my elementary school cafeteria served. I would have been better off going to Taco Bell. read more
