I grew up eating at Skippers when I was a kid. I was good friends with skipper and his wife for many years. Every time I'm in town have always stopped to eat there. Over the years seems the food quality and some of the service has dropped off. No longer is the vinegar sauce in the tables , barbecue trays have changed to plates, serving sizes are smaller, stew is not as good as it used to be. The restaurant is aging , and needs to be renovated. I know it is still in the family but I wish they would have kept the traditions that Mr and Mrs Forsyth started the business with. We traveled here after a long day in Virginia sight seeing. We were about 3 hours from home and hungry. The food did not disappoint. The hush puppies as soon as we sat down were hot and melted in your mouth. My kids and I ordered the friend pickles and the portion was HUGE! The pickles themselves were a little salty, but still really good . The Mac and cheese is to die for. Even though we live in the Shenandoah Valley 3 hours away from here I'll be back. As you can see in one of my photos the restaurant sitting area leaves a lot to the imagination. I'm not going to lie when I first walked in I judged the place by the way the tables and chairs looked. This place should be on every NC barbecue lover's destination list. I am a political consultant who has crisscrossed the state for years and tried it all and this place is the best in the local area. On top of the food, the ambiance is that classic, small town, southern barbecue spot that we all dream of. It's not the best traditional, eastern style barbecue I've ever had, but a very solid version that is slightly different and enjoyable in its own right. Try the pulled barbecue plate with a side of the "yellow" (mustard-based) sauce instead of the chopped for something a bit different. You have to dress it yourself. Their hush puppies can be great, but some days are thinner than others. Use butter liberally with them. For sides, the bbq beans are quite unique -- sweet with bits of hamburger in it. The potato gems (tater tots) are a classic as is the slaw. I'm always a fried okra fan and this place is no exception. The fry them perfectly. I also enjoy the collards, but they come creamed (or stewed down) so make sure that's your style. All in all, if you want to have a full understanding of the breadth of North Carolina barbecue then this place is a must stop. This dining was "ok". Your ordinary local eatery... floor seating with wide open seating space. They have daily specials. We went for lunch for a "filler". I got a small side salad and grill cheese. Hubby got a shrimp sandwich and tater tots. . It was "ok". We didn't get any of the daily special... It was lunch time. It wasn't packed out, but there were about 5 tables of "locals" (you could tell). Seems everyone knows everyone who came in to eat. . Our waitress was very sweet, accommodating and nice. Very attentive. My hubby liked his sandwich. His tater tots were 'lupe' warm. My grill cheese was the same ...'lupe' warm/borderline cold. I still ate it... ha! I was hungry. The salad, was just as it was... a small side salad. I had about 8 crackers (captain wafers) with it and it was good to me. Nothing spectacular to make me want to RUSH back this week. Located about a mile off of I-85, and just up the road from rival Nunnery-Freeman, this Henderson icon serves up so fine Eastern NC style chopped pork barbecue, and some pretty fair county cooking, as well. Kind of worn looking on the outside, the interior is bright, clean, and fairly good-sized seating areas - booths on the walls, tables in the middle. I ordered the Barbecue and Stew combo with Slaw and Boiled Potatoes, goes for $7.25. The pork is moderately chopped, moist, tender, and with a slightly red hue to it, from the tomato in their sauce, not strictly Eastern, but good - there is little smokiness to the meat. It comes out of the kitchen well sauced, but it is not overdone. The sauce is a nice, vinegar based version, and overall the barbecue is very, very good. There is additional sauce on the table, as well as a commercial hot sauce. The slaw is moist, with some sweet pickle, goes ok with the barbecue, but not a stand alone slaw for my tastes. The Brunswick Stew is not my style either - it is sweet and almost the consistency of a puree, and I'd not order again. The small, new boiled potatoes, almost certainly canned, were simply prepared with butter, salt and pepper, and were excellent. They still had the round shape - not cooked to mush. The hush puppies are small, thin, and delicious - good flavor, not sweet. The Fried Chicken was very good, thinly coated, and fried perfectly. The 1/4 plate with 2 sides was $5.95. The Fried Okra, the typical previous frozen restaurant variety, was nonetheless, very good. The Mac & Cheese was like Kraft's, ok but nothing special. They also serve daily special plates, a variety of fried seafood, and sandwiches. The hot dog is the typical Southern chili dog - red wiener, good thick chili, nice bun, and fresh onions - I like their dog. The service is friendly (the waitress leaves a card on your table identifying her by name), and the kitchen is quick. Overall, a very good barbecue joint - worth its reputation. read more

The food rates 4 stars. Pick up is available. No one in the pick up area were wearing masks and there is not room to socially distance in the customer area. If that concerns you, you have to wait outside for the person inside to leave. One unmasked person went in ahead of me while I was waiting outside. Could've used a little more salt, but texture was nice. Pork was whole hog, with a sweeter, more western sauce. There was a lot of sauce and the texture was pretty mushy. The sauce way overflavored the pork. No smoke. It's hard to find really smoky BBQ anymore at an NC BBQ joint and this place had none. Slaw was ok, too much sweet pickle for me. Bbq was whole hog and just vinegary enough probably for most, though I prefer a little more "bite" in mine. Actually picked up a hint of sugar in it. My guess is there's more in the sauce than vinegar and peppers, the classic eastern NC style. Iced tea was good and they have crushed ice - always a plus. Good sized portions at moderate prices. There are three B's in the GREAT state of North Carolina ~ (1) Bible; (2) Basketball; and (3) BBQ. Skipper's is my choice for the latter. Now, I must admit I grew up on Skipper Forsyth's. I lived just over a mile from this joint from 1974-1995. There can be NO question, I was immersed into their offerings for years. You like your Stew HOT? As in ... spicy hot and pippin' stove hot? Then the brunswick stew is to die for. Depending on the time of day... the stew can be really really thick .... or it can be a little soupy. (An old trick to make something go a little further is putting some water in it.) Everyone has the taste they prefer in texture. I like mine kind of in-between. Just thinking about the BBQ makes my mouth moisten and pucker with the anticipation of a high-octane vinegar based pork that can not be replicated. Not to be confused with chopped or pulled ... this seems to be more of a shredded variety. Don't ask me how they do it .... but the texture is extremely soft. Soft enough that a baby with no teeth could devour a plate. The BBQ experience is accented by an viciously sweet tea. I'm talking something so unbelievable, its as far from the East is to the West. Imagine for a moment experiencing a lip-puckering delicious bite of BBQ that has your mouth watering and tongue ablaze being quenched next by a tea so sweet it almost makes any metal filling in your mouth want to jump out! That may sound too extreme for some .... but its perfect for me! (you don't actually have any pain .... just simply trying to explain how delicious both are here.) The only thing I'm in different on is Skipper's Hush Puppies. You can taste the sugar in them. I don't need a sugary sweet HP when I've got the tea. The HP's are rather large. I prefer them smaller. But ... if you dip 'em in the stew.... it kind of nullifies the negative impact. The 'tater tots are good. But, sometimes a little greasy. Still ... I enjoy my hometown joint something bad. I usually finish off my plate with a slice of Chocolate Meringue Pie. Mmmm, Mmmmm! Outstanding! Now, I'm a slaw hater. But ... my wife loves theirs. I also couldn't speak to their collards or greens or black eyed peas. I just get the same thing every time. And I'm in a happy state of bliss when I leave. At 37 years of age, and now living 30 minutes away, it is a treat I have to obtain only a few times a year. Through my travels in life, I've come to realize everyone makes BBQ differently. It's more than just an Eastern style NC vs. Western NC thing. There are differences even in my hometown. Raleigh BBQ joints can't capture the unique style and flavor of this local establishment that has existed for probably a good 60+ years. This is one of those reviews where I wished I could break out service and food. The food is great for the area. Really bad for you but really good. The service on the other thing is mediocre at best. If you arrive for take out you'll probably stand at the counter for several minutes while staff walks by and ignores you. Of course, if you were like me you tried to call ahead. They only answer about 25% of the time. Arrive and you'll hear the phone ringing. They clearly aren't paid well not do they care. I actually tip 15% on take out but that is not that normal. They are often perplexed. I have actually witnessed a staff fight. Probably explains the poor service. On the food, the BBQ is minced. I highly recommend the beets, cabbage and baked beans. They often run short of sides. The food is cheap. I would prefer they raise the prices a bit, pay the staff more, and work on the attitudes. read more

There is a nice painting of Skipper Forsyth himself on the wall by the front door. I ordered the BBQ & Brunswick stew combo at a very good price. The pork BBQ was a bit bland and dry like it had been overcooked. The hushpuppies were small and thin like a #2 pencil. The baked beans were good and the green beans may have come from a can. I was really looking forward to some vinegar based BBQ, and after staying at some hotel near by, the night before and from the recommendation of the receptionist i found this great place and looked like I was the first person there in the morning.
