I very underwhelming experience for me. I used to go to the same location in Harrisonburg quite frequently. And just like that one I always leave wanting more. I switched it up this time and got a salad. It was okay but very flavorless. Quite underwhelming for the price but they do give you one hell of a portion size. COVID protocols are in place: a hand sanitizing is station at the entrance, staff wears masks, stickers are on the floor for social distancing, every other table taped off and a mask sign at the entrance. Got the Rachel sandwich with Mac-n-cheese, tomato & cucumber salad, famous tea and chocolate chip cookies. Asked for toasted, marbled rye. The first order was barely toasted and Karen offered to remake the sandwiches for us. The second came with the same barely toasted bread and this time without the pickle. Karen realized the mistake and offered to remake the sandwich again. We declined. She apologized and refilled our drinks, brought us a to-go box and gave us personal attention. Ordinarily, I would give a rating of two for a a two-time problem order. But Karen was so 'pancake-flipping' good to us and our sandwiches were gorgeous and piled high, I wanted to reflect my full experience more accurately. The Rachel is basically a smoked turkey Reuben and a favorite of ours wherever we go. This sandwich was 'pregnant' - it had a bulge in the middle of turkey piled high, with Swiss cheese, Thousand Island dressing and sauerkraut on marbled rye. It was served cut down the middle and the cross section showed the smoke discolored edges of the turkey and layers of delicious, wet fillings. My tomato & cucumber salad was chopped to a manageable size. Not messy to eat. It was a little heavy in the red onion - but I enjoy onion. The dressing mellowed the sharpness of the onion to almost 'pickle stage.' I could have eaten a double order! The Mac-n-cheese arrived warm, creamy and satisfying. It could have used a little pepper. (Condiments like salt and pepper are no longer on the table.) The cookie came Saran wrapped. It was crispy, soft and chewy, all at the same time. The chocolate chips were 'melty' and it was a superior cookie all-around! McAllisters is famous for their tea, sweet & unsweet and even better with a big hunk of lemon. Tea was fresh brewed and pretty in the clear cups. There was no cloudiness at all. We got refills to go (actually fresh, new cups.) It was a nice dinner for us and we plan to ask for Karen the next time we come in. read more

This place's standards were low even before COVID, but I was desperate for a Baked Potato and decided to try my luck. Whatever I was expecting, it wasn't this. The potatoes are burnt, the Edges of the Angus are charcoal, and the smell is like burnt rubber meets roadkill. You don't have to be Gordon Ramsey to know that it's the owner's and the Kitchen Expediter's job to check the quality of an item before it goes to the customer. Clearly either McAlisters' chef is devoid of a sense of smell or taste, or simply doesn't care and isn't worried about their job. The manager could care less as well. She treated the situation as if it was our fault for not being able to go there during a pandemic, or simply not being able to drive. I asked for another, non-burnt Potato to be made, but apparently they don't have a contact with Doordash, so if you aren't able to drive or go outside because of the Pandemic, don't take a gamble on this place and be stuck with burnt food. You won't have a chance to get your food remade properly. It's already barely worth the added fees they make you pay anyways. If you are looking for an even halfway decent Baked Potato, don't bother coming here. If you are looking for a club sandwich that is passable at best, but overpriced, then maybe try your luck. There is no quality control across this entire restaurant, and I clearly shouldn't have trusted them after being let down in the past. So long as the people don't care if their food sucks, this place will keep shoveling it out without caring either. read more

Earlier in the week my son said the service and food was great, but on Sat 8/31 it was not good at all! They were possibly short staffed, but still, forgetting 3 different items was not acceptable. McAlister's was a quick sandwich stop for us. It's conveniently located right off of I-64, has ample parking if towing anything, and outdoor seating. The club sandwich was fine, nothing outstanding for a deli chain. It came with a side item, but unfortunately, a cup of soup was an upcharge of an additional $3.29. That didn't seem reasonable for a cup so I opted for the mac and cheese (which was also okay). With so many other options in Waynesboro, it wouldn't be my first choice. There was an issue, but how quickly and how well they corrected the situation left me in a great mood and for few days I just think about how well they handled things and not even about what was wrong. Tasty food and good service but we stopped eating there years ago due to our MSG (monosodium glutamate) sensitivity and concerns for our health. All deli meat production is prone to using MSG as a flavor enhancer and meat tenderizer. Research is out that deli meats contribute to Alzheimer's and my father was fed a lot of it. In the early 70's my mother, who was admittedly not a great cook, began using a brand called Accent which came out then as a flavor enhancer. She put it in most all she fixed especially steaks which my daddy loved. Accent has MSG as the main ingredient Daddy developed early onset Alzheimer's back in the mid-'70's before Alzheimer's was hardly known ...now is is a major disease that many families and loved ones suffer from. We did not know but trusted the grocer, the FDA and the food industry to protect us from new additives. My father passed from complications of Alzheimer's in 1983. Fast forward to 2014 when my husband developed Afib (irregular heart beat). After carefully watching his diet we noticed a pattern when we ate out and at family holiday dinners that used MSG...it made both of us ill. With me gut issues but for him he had to have emergency cardio versions. I've watched the presentation and both scientific and antidotal evidence over MSG since we noticed a connection to his Afib bouts. We mostly eat at home and ask any place we eat at if they use it or Accent in their cooking...and we do our very best to avoid it. The government and food industry seem unconcerned however in full disclosure this chain and many other very popular fast food restaurants admit it's use and most are very open and helpful. It is approved for use by the FDA. But for me it proves one of my favorite quotes from Wendell Berry... "People are fed by the food industry, which pays no attention to health, and are treated by the health industry, which pays no attention to food." Do your own research for everything that you ingest in thought and substance but realize our age of instant information has become a big billboard for a lot of ads and conflicting agenda's. Wisdom and truth are harder and harder to find... This is my opinion from my research and my personal and family experience with MSG. I certainly do believe some people are more sensitive to MSG than others. But I think it is important to know that quality (Non-GMO and grown with no or low pesticides), whole, real, local, seasonal, fresh food matters. It matters if we want our food to be the safest and healthiest for us. Fast food will keep us alive but not as healthy. If and when the public gets more educated and when they ask and demand for healthier food things will change. read more

Wanted a quick meal after running some errands in the evening. McAlister's is conveniently located off the interstate. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. Markings on the floor to help with social distancing. Staff was all following covid precautions. They seemed to do quite a bit of takeout business. I ordered a club sandwich which very ok. The bread was obviously toasted, but fell apart while eating. It had ham and turkey, but the turkey was non-existent on half the sandwich. Not a big mustard fan, but it gave the sandwich good flavor. This is preCOVID. I would never admonish people against or try to attack a restaurant during these times. My mother in law loves this place so my wife goes with her and their family is far from being amazing cooks. Also, I don't think this is a location problem. I think the whole chain is at fault. I've been strung along a few times and while they have good tea and a passable Rachel sandwich, this place takes slapped together food to the extreme. Salads are boring. Sandwiches are tasteless and dry. It feels like you're ordering food atv an IKEA. Everything is microwaved, warmed up from frozen or just completely mishandled. And they have pretty good ingredients. They just can't put it together. A chicken caesar wrap where the tortilla is cold, gummy and dry at the same time. I had to shake the parm out of the wrap to allow my saliva to make a bite moist enough to swallow. It's obvious everything comes in a microwaved bag. We have had sandwiches from here 5 or 6 times but always take-out. Last week, I took the family for lunch and we ate in the restaurant. The food was as good as usual... And I think a decent value. The problem, and the reason we are not returning, is how disgustingly filthy the place is (see photos). I contacted the company through their website to let them know and never heard from them. The booth table was dirty, the floor was sticky, the walls of the booth were spattered with dried food, the bathrooms were dirty too. But the absolute worst thing was this: When my husband went to the men's room, he came back and said that there was no soap in the dispenser. After that we saw 2 cooks, on 2 separate occasions, go in and use the men's room. Both came out and went into the kitchen. Nobody took a soap canister into the bathroom. These guys went back in the kitchen without washing their hands. Disgusting! Did they wash them in the kitchen? Who knows. Nobody seemed concerned enough to replace the soap. Thank goodness we had already gotten our food before these 2 cooks used the bathroom. We really like the food here but will not be going back. We like it, but not enough to risk getting ecoli. I have been to several other McAlister's and this one seems to be lacking something. It's very clean and the front of the house staff is very nice and attentive, but the cooks looked like a gangly crew and very unamused with being there. The food was alright, but everything seemed to be missing a couple of the ingredients listed on the menu. WiFi was advertised in the window, but was not working when we were there. The seating outside is nice bonus and this is probably the only place in Waynesboro that you can score a healthy meal. I will probably keep going unless a better choice pops up. read more

The past few times we've gone to McAlister's for dinner we've been very disappointed with the service and the food. The cashiers have acted like it's a chore to wait on us and weren't very pleasant. Our food has come out piece meal (partial orders), cold, no silverware, wrong order, dry bread, etc. We've requested items such as crackers or butter and have never received them. Went there 2 Sundays ago and had one of the best sandwiches ever. Roast beef with mild horseradish, cheddar, and caramelized onions. Makes my mouth water thinking about it. We decided to go back last Friday. Tried the Po boy Cajun shrimp. Either somebody else was working the kitchen, or the Po boy is a reminder it can't be as good as it looks. No sauce, shrimp had no spices, I ordered with no cole slaw. So for $8.99 I got a 6" sandwich with a lettuce leaf two mushy tomato slices and about 12 popcorn sized shrimp sautéed (more likely microwaved). I still like this place lots of sandwiches, will just take time to see which are good and which to avoid. read more
