Stopped here for lunch quick and I ended up with two lunches!! If you also want two lunches order the chicken salad sandwich, because it is HUGE. I could barely finish 1 half... The sandwich was good, it wasn't great but I enjoyed it. The sourdough bread it A LOT, so I would recommend a different kind of bread for it to be a little less, well, "bready". Which also may not drown out the flavor of the chicken salad so much! I enjoyed the special dressing that came with it, definitely would recommend. A great location! Everything you know and love about the Take it Away on the corner, but with plenty of seating and parking through the Dairy Market. It was always hard to get to Take it Away if you did not live in student areas, but now it is an easier drive. The service was fantastic, they even prepared our food when we accidentally ordered to the wrong location at no extra charge. Would highly recommend stopping here. read more

The staff member at the front counter spent several minutes complaining to their colleague (in front of us) before helping us and there were several items out of stock. The sandwiches we got were still made with the same quality ingredients as the one on the corner, but both had some of the toppings either a little wrong or something was left off. The same staff member was also audibly agitated at another coworker and we could hear them talk bad about the other coworker. Maybe the staff had a bad day, I'm not sure, but there are better options at the dairy market with far better service. read more

My first time at the Dairy Market and after some delicious ice cream I wanted a sandwich to take back to the hotel for later. I took a while consulting with my sidekick and the Take It Away staff were friendly, patient and very helpful. I ordered the Italian, and it was FAB-ulous! The Italian bread was crunchy and chewy in all the right places. The fillings were fresh and generous and the tastes all melded together beautifully. It would have been big enough for two meals except I couldn't stop myself halfway through. I live on a neighbor island in Hawaii and if I could I would finance Take It Away to relocate here. Wow, the service here was mean. As I picked up my order, I asked for extra cutlery. She held up a fork and knife. It was loud and I figured she was asking me to take them, so I did. She yelled "you didn't need to snatch it from my hand like that" and stalked away, rolling her eyes and complaining to her colleagues. Maybe it was a miscommunication, but I'd never snatch anything from anyone and didn't deserve to be yelled at like that. The sandwich tasted like nothing. This place isn't worth it. Beware mayo haters! Take it Away prominently advertises its signature house dressing in multiple places, including on its menu and sign this way: "our House Dressing, a blend of herbs, spices and whole grain mustard..." Sounds great, right? I thought so. I opened my sandwich to find a thick slathering of mayo on everything, and nothing remotely resembling whole grain mustard anywhere to be seen. When I took it back to the stall, I was told that, yes, it's mostly mayo but that *is* the house dressing. "It's what we're known for." Well I was from out of town, so I don't know what you're known for. I hate mayonnaise with a passion and I kinda have to go by what the menu and signage say: The house dressing consists of grain mustard with some spices added. If your house dressing is mostly mayo, you might wanna LIST MAYO AS AN INGREDIENT. They refused to remake it and I threw my $11 sandwich in the trash. The hot hollie is a reliable meat-forward sandwich - soft sub bread with generous servings of roast beef and turkey and cheddar. You won't go hungry choosing this but note that you'll have to add any veg - even lettuce - if you want anything other than bun, meat, and cheese. And the bacon is likely from a box. The veggie was a bit more disappointing- the bread in particular was dry and couldn't hold it all together. For any sandwich make sure yours has roasted tomato, pickled peppers and extra pickles. read more

This is a review for the Grady Ave/ Dairy Market location of " Take it Away Sandwich Shop". First let's get this out of the way that this is a long standing business here in town and this is a new location that is principally easier for the general public (READ, Not UVA students or employees) to patronize. That said as a lifelong resident of this city I have curiously never been to this place! Chalk that up to it's anchor was on a small difficult street with difficult parking alternatives. I think that's fair: I like to support local businesses but if it's inconvenient to do so and it's prospering then we can live w/out one another. The location is lovely and it's my first time in the building since the renovation. At this point many of us have set foot into re-imagined spaces throughout the world that once were industrial and now have a new lease as retail and living spaces. Having seen the "innards" and conditions of this old dairy distributor/bottler +ice factory before this re-spin it's awfully nice to see it polished and worn and full of people enjoying themselves. I ordered two sandwiches via their website which was fine and I was able to utilize Apple pay which is great but did not find an option to tip, and I looked and did not find it which is aggravating as hell. I live ten minutes away, I drove. Expect to pay to park. Be kind, expect some chaos in the lot. The staff were working hard fulfilling orders and the young lady at the register could not have been nicer, truly. The big broad smile and her calling my name aloud was a nice touch as I walked up. Back at home (take-out) we, my wife and I found the sandwiches odd heading towards weird. The french bread sliced horizontally and with every characteristic of "white-bread", meaning soft and w/candy-floss consistency and little flavor. She had turkey pastrami which apparently had all the hallmarks of honey roasted turkey and of no other spiced-cured meat product. I had their Italian Sub which is the benchmark by which I gauge everyone who purports to be a sandwich shop. "I have to choose to have cheese"?? I guess in this alternative reality yes because it doesn't come with. Also only salami? Just salami. Yes I can tinker with it but this is the thing you offer under a template by which there are standards and I have to make no decisions. OK... then just sweet peppers and roasted red peppers. Was there even onions? It's odd. Or consider this, maybe the sandwiches would not have been all that odd if not for their "signature sauce". I am glad that their sauce has been a big factor in their success but it's not for me. Both meals were covered in it. "Slathered"?? There may have been things like the onions hiding in that sauce and if so they were swimming in it. It's basically Miracle Whip and God knows maybe I'm wayyy off on that comparison but I haven't tasted that in thirty years and there's damn good reason for it. Is it better than another local, primarily gas-station based sandwich shop "The Market". A = "Nope". Is it better than "Wawa"? Nope. No it is not. Is it better than the Potbelly on West Main Street? No but the last Time I checked in there the service was god-awful, so I might pick Take It Away here but I would probably just stay home and heat up a small cookie sheet of frozen popcorn shrimp before bothering to go to either. read more

Slow service (this location gets swamped with Elevate orders), but that's pretty standard for the Dairy Market. As far as the food goes, it's hit or miss. My girlfriend's roast beef on sourdough was delicious and what you'd expect for the price. My Italian, though, was extremely disappointing. For starters, this is one of their signature sandwiches - it's the most expensive thing on the menu. The ingredients were good, but little care was put into actually assembling the sandwich. It fell apart as soon as I unwrapped it. After putting the sandwich back together, I was shocked to realize that the French bread was only 1-2 inches wide at it's thickest point. This is an $11 signature sandwich. At the very least, I'd expect it to be roughly the same size as the "make your own" sandwiches, but my girlfriend's was much larger. It's a shame because the ingredients were quite good, but expect to be disappointed with both the size and assembly of the signature options. You're better off paying $8 and making your own - it'll be bigger and have a better chance of staying together. read more

We stopped at the Dairy Market to check it out and ended up having a late lunch. I ordered The Chancellor (turkey, ham, havarti, and pickles on pumpernickel), and it was one of the best sandwiches I've had in a long time! The bread and meat were very fresh and it was the perfect size. I feel like it's hard to find a regular sandwich that's not a sub, so it was nice to find Take It Away. The Dairy Market is also a great location...lots of parking and lots of food and drink choices. read more
