This is not a professional moving company! They are not supposed to break One item! We had over Ten items that were destroyed. Our move was local from our home to an apartment within Westchester. The move was extremely disorganized with move boxes that said Kitchen left in the bedroom, etc. When we unpacked we found many broken items. Most of them were our fine crystal, LLadro porcelain that we collected over the years from trips and the worst yet ... my husbands most cherished possession an item that his father built by hand and was to be an heirloom. When we contacted McAvey, we were told to itemize every broken item and declare its value. We used reputable sites to find replacement items at market cost and sent that along with photos. This was not honored!! Instead, we have been told that "Some of the damage did pre-exist or was due to ageing ...". Nothing we gave them had pre-existing damage or was given to them destroyed due to aging. The other items presented were listed as either going to be repaired or no value. Fine crystal and LLadro can not be repaired. It has to be replaced. They need to do the right thing! We have given McAvey every opportunity to make this right and they have not done so. read more

Broken glasses, dented furniture, and furniture that looked like it was reassembled by someone with a blindfold. We had a super positive experience with McAvey Movers. We needed to move from our house where we lived for the past 33 years. We had no idea how to begin. From the start, we knew we were in experienced, confident hands. We were given excellent advice and McAvey was right at every turn. On the day of the move, 3 awesome crew members (Bill, Fred, and Jason) showed up. They were so nice, respectful, and so hard working. McAvey moved us from our home in Chappaqua to an apartment in Manhattan, holding our things in storage for the summer. I chose McAvey because they seem to have a good reputation in Westchester and I wanted this move done professionally. In fact I decided against another company whose owner seemed terrific and would have been on the job personally because he hadn't been in business long enough to have established a reputation. I packed 95% of our things myself, carefully wrapping and packing each item - and everything arrived in tact, without damages. Foolishly I left the most valuable things for McAvey to move, thinking that they should be "professionally packed". Ha! What a mistake. They showed up for the packing/move - a group of inexperienced, rough guys who were rushing us and roughly handling our things. The one 'in charge' did the packing. Unfortunately I was so busy with doing last minute things myself I didn't supervise him - nor did it even occur to me that I would need to look over his shoulder. We were supposed to be moved in two days. On Day 2 when it became apparent that they would not finish in time, the owner came to the house for the first time and accused me of having more things than when the estimate had been done a week earlier! Did he think I went out and bought new furniture? In fact I had given away and disposed of a lot in the interim. He wanted to charge us more for not completing it in 2 days and we had a very big argument but they were already in possession of some of our things so we stuck with it, really had no choice. Our things were delivered to our apartment by a much more professional crew, however we were horrified at the condition of our belongings. Our mattress hadn't been properly wrapped and it was dirty. The wardrobes holding our clothes were crushed and our clothing laid in heaps on the bottom of the wardrobes. Several pieces of antique furniture were damaged, and our prized possession, an antique bronze clock was broken. These items had been loosely wrapped in paper. The clock was 'packed' in paper and then put in a carton. No bubble wrap, no peanuts, nothing to protect it. The list goes on... but I think I have made my point. I had a flood in my apt and was forced to put all my furniture in storage until they replaced my floors. I received a quote from the owner, Eugene, to move & store my furniture for a month. He advised that he would personally disassemble my furniture, as I had concerns with disassembling my large complicated furniture after 13 yrs. My insurance company was paying for the storage, so Eugene sent the quote and confirmation via email. Eugene advised that he would come to my apartment at noon on the day set for moving. I requested that he let me know if the schedule changes, as I was having workers come to my apartment at 3pm after the move. Eugene never arrived nor did he return my calls. I called the company and Brian sent movers at almost 3pm - 3 hours after the noon appointment and advised me that Eugene will not be coming. Eugene's employee stated that he could not disassemble my leather/wood sofa. Long story short, I had to call another moving company, cancel my appointment with the workers coming to fix my floors at 3pm and reschedule my reservations at the hotel. Because it was Thursday, I couldn't get another appointment with the workers replacing my floors until the following week. Fortunately, the new movers were able to pick up my furniture on Monday. This moving company set me back six days and didn't even bother to apologize nor return my calls. The most unprofessional moving company I've ever had to deal with. Response to your two year later message (8/29/17): These are all blatant lies. Your movers were three hours late without any notification. I had to call the office several times that day. Also, I was NEVER advised Eugene had a "sudden death in the family." In fact, the movers told me they didn't know where he was and seemed surprised to hear Eugene was supposed to arrive. That's when I called the office to find out what was going on. Brian advised he would need to call Eugene & get back to me. I never heard back from Eugene and was advised I can choose to go ahead with the move or wait for Eugene. I chose to go ahead with the move, but the mover in charge refused more than once to move my furniture because he said did not know how to disassemble my wooden leather sofa. I told him that's why Eugene said he would personally dissemble the delicate sofa. He further refused saying he did not want to touch it if Eugene was supposed to personally handle. I didn't refuse any moving service whatsoever; as I was in desperate need to move. Nor did I agree to wait for Eugene to move me a week later, as my deadline to move was that day! To state such blatant false statements to minimize your 1 star review is appalling and tasteless. Your company not only caused me additional expenses, but left me with a highly stressful situation. You were very unapologetic, unsympathetic & unprofessional. It also took you two years to respond to this review, which shows your lack of interest and concern for your customers. read more

Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere for a reputable moving company where the owner might actually keep his word instead of these guys. We had a move that was to be done in a timely fashion, which was communicated clearly from the start. McAvey assured me that moving us out of NY on 12/21/17 and having our goods delivered to Florida on 12/28/17 was something they could do - we arranged to get into our rental home early as opposed to January 1, since McAvey said they could accommodate the delivery date. Needless to say - before they even finished packing us up at our NY home we overheard a phone call with one of their guys stating that the goods would not be delivered before January 5th!! The phone calls and scrambling started that day to try and figure out what happened, and what I was going to do with my wife and daughter for a week plus now that this was happening - we were going to have to live in a hotel for a week plus! This is the part where Brian, the owner, and I finally connected live and he agreed that he would have to offer some kind of refund at which point I told him he could pay for the hotel stay and meals for three people until we get our stuff delivered to our destination - which he agreed to do. I would just have to send him copies of charges. We sent them the bills and then it was catch me if you can on his part - never once did he return a phone call, or an email - he has the nice gal from his office on some correspondence until she dropped out as well. He had zero intentions of making good on his word during this stressful time. This game of chase went on for MONTHS until I finally got hold of the Stevens Worldwide office in Michigan and laid it all out for them. In the end, we got repaid 5 months after the move, by the corporate office and not McAvey - stay away at all costs and save yourself some stress, these guys are not worth your time or money. Nothing worse than a man who can't keep his word. Total lack of communication, and not keeping his word...moving is stressful enough. Go elsewhere - if i could give it ZERO stars that would be the truth - but there is a minimum required to post. read more

My family and I have used McAvey Moving twice, and they are fantastic. Their estimate (and final price) was lower than most movers. They arrived on time. The day I moved, it was pouring rain - so they wrapped all of my furniture to ensure that it would not be damaged. They disassembled my furniture at the old location, and reassembled it at the new location. They were very hardworking guys, and I would definitely recommend them. It was the best of companies, now it is the worst. McAvey moved a whole house for me in May of 2013 and it was a great experience (see my review from 6/4/2013). Then they moved me the same whole house again in May of 2015. The 2015 move was a disaster in every way. The first move was done by experienced movers, the 2nd by college kids with virtually no experience and less concern than experience. The one guy who was consistent between the 2 moves said everyone had left because the changed the way they paid their workers. Everything was packed and labeled but on the pickup the workers were slow and disorganized. On the delivery, we found many boxes randomly placed everywhere. Kitchen boxes in bedrooms, linens in the basement....you get the idea. It was clear that the goal was...get the truck unpacked and get out. The unprofessionalism and rush to finish led to more than just misplaced boxes. In the first move I had no damage, in the 2nd move, I had $3900 dollars of damage according to their insurance adjuster! Fortunately I purchased insurance but it took 6 months to get them to come up with a settlement quote and suffice it to say, I am still waiting for the company to pay the claim...and I have been very persistent throughout. The company still has the same owner, but quality wise, its nowhere near the same company it was. Stay as far away as you possibly can...unless you want damaged furniture and endless frustration. read more

Our move was perfect and smooth thanks to these guys. I am in my 9th month of pregnancy, so I was pretty useless when it came time for us to pack and move. I called McAvey and they were very accommodating; within a few days of initially calling, we had our moving date scheduled. They even worked with us to see what we could move ourselves to get the price of the movers down. On moving day, they were on time and very efficient. They were done in under 4 hours! McAvey is great at making promises. We recently moved and trusted the slick salesman, Eugene McAvey, who promised they could handle our needs including a sleep number bed, a Peloton treadmill and a custom made wooden swing made for our daughter. What actually happened is Eugene neglected to tell his crew about our needs. They proceeded to break the swing trying to disassemble it instead of loading it assembled per our instructions. It is now fragile and in need of a rebuild. The nightmare continued on the other end where we had a potential delay in closing that we alerted Brian McAvey about as soon as we heard. His response was the equivalent of " tough luck". There was no customer sensitivity. It was "you will get your belongings there when we can fit it in". After paying a premium for this company we were stunned. The closing was fine but they already removed us from the schedule. The goods were eventually delivered on 2 separate days. Our bed was on the first truck and this was when the told us they didn't know how to reassemble the sleep number bed. We went 4 weeks without our bed until Sleep Number could sent a technician. Lastly the Peloton Tread was damaged in the move. We have had two service visits but it is not yet working. McAvey has yet to follow up to see if the issues have been resolved. Do yourself a favor and don't bother inquiring about their services. We have moved more than 15 times and this was deplorable. They frankly don't care if their customers are satisfied and they over state their skills at a premium price. We would actually give Zero stars for this experience. read more

To Whom it May Concern; McAvey moved us 5 weeks ago from Sleepy Hollow, NY to CT. An hour and 15 minutes away. We were downsizing from a large home. My husband is an invalid and I have numerous Arthritic joints. And severe back problems. My request was simple. Please keep the contents of the rooms together, one room at a time. And, Please keep the boxes small so I can lift and unpack them. This was the worst most traumatic move that I have ever experienced. I had moved 10 times in 13 years with IBM and never experienced such a terrible move. They load the boxes with paper so the weight is desirable for their company not older adults. They also benefit from over packing because they will charge you more for the weight once everything has been packed. We are still looking for missing items. Some items are very expensive. There were two pieces of expensive furniture that had huge pieces of wood broken off of the armoires. The salesman visited the first day when we were investigating other movers. I took his offer because it was less expensive than the other more well known moving companies.He was a smooth talker ( i didn't realize that until it was too late) and pretty much lied about the services. We were charged $2K over the estimated move. I had even ask about hidden charges. I would never recommend them!!! Ann Errico read more

60 days after complaint UPDATE: INCOMPETENT, UNETHICAL, THIEVING CLOWNS who don't care about your during or after the move. it's been 60 days since I first contacted Mc Avey Moving to alert them about the significant damages they did to our fine furniture. ZERO CONTACT from the claims adjuster unless we call her. We were told today the insurance contact isn't real insurance but a valuation service for McAvey. MC Avey lies and tells you that you are insured while in reality the customer is not. A clownish move by a bunch of bumbling idiots and on top of that the insurance that they sell you is worthless as its from a company cant be bothered to contact the customer to start the process of processing the claim. Why am I not surprised? This is what Mc Avey is all about. Good old Don Tracey was babbling about how well they wrap the furniture in corrugated cardboard. I have numerous photos showing horrific damages and some fine furniture wrapped only in a single sheet of brown paper. This is not a professional moving company. These are day laborers picked up off a street corner. Don was clearly misrepresenting their skill set and I think the Attorney General of The State of New York will be having a field day investigating these fraudsters. read more

Well, if you ever saw the optimum commercials on tv about the half ass, dumb witted, moving company, these guys put them to shame. When I first met with the company estimator and as we went through my house, he told me about the top quality movers they hire and assured me that they REALLY knew what they were doing and took great pride in there work. "we don't hire just anyone," I was told. WRONG. First, they showed up with a rental truck. I was told that their trucks were all in for repairs. I get that but, if your an outstanding company, you keep your equipment in good running order. That's your bread and butter! I am not going to go into detail as to how many pieces of furniture they broke, shattered, scratched, & gouged. During the whole move, we were a total wreck as to how they handled our items. I saw one guy ALONE walking down the front concrete stairs, DRAGGING my expensive mattress. It now has torn material down the one whole side. Stupid, lazy stuff. They dented walls inside the house I just sold, dented door jambs, & scratched wood floors. Weeks before the move, they were suppose to come to the house and go over some kind of plan. No one ever showed. When I called, no one called back. The only thing they did was to take some money off the final bill. I'm sure once I replace the broken items and have the antique furniture repaired, that reduced amount from the bill isn't close. I will say however, there was ONE shinning star. The estimators son. Nicest guy. He took care of everything he boxed, wrapped, and had his hands on. Sad part was, I thought he was going to make the trip to unload as well but, did not. My intention was to give him a nice tip. Did not happen. For that, I apologize. I know that if you sugar coat your business with a lot of BS, it will eventually fail. And people like me are going to let the public know before it's to late for THEM ! read more

Just moved from NY to NJ with McAvey Moving Co. This was quite a large move, with two trucks, two days of loading, overnight storage for a few days, and lots of heavy furniture, in the rain, no less. The strongest part of this company is sales. Unfortunately, everything else was not good. They promised to be very careful with my 1908 Steinway piano -- but dropped the lid, necessitating repairs. They also damaged a custom built dining room hutch, and improperly wrapped damaged the set of dining room chairs. Finally, they lost at least two cardboard moving boxes, one containing tools, the other century old civil war books and piano music. While anyone can make a mistake, McAvey has been very poor in repairing and replacing the items. It took forever to get a check and repairman for the damaged items. I am still waiting for reimbursement for the lost boxes. Extremely disappointed, and would recommend that unless you want damaged and lost goods and poor service, you should avoid this company read more
